Exactly. He defends them throughout the entire series (except for the Jack the Ripper arc), and not even as a "the-enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend" type of character, but as an actual ally. That's what gets me. He's just so helpful, no matter how much he gets rejected~. "Our fate may be too big to resist, but at least I have your back."
