    I got a japanese r30 a few years ago with a bundle of ~130 discs for $50 (I really miss those days of cheap minidisc paraphernalia). It's certainly a solid unit, I swear it could be a blunt murder weapon. It sounds great and has one of the faster mechs, detecting and seeking on discs very quickly.

      That was a good deal! Even in the last year since I started collecting, prices are up at least 50%. Wish I had bought more so I could sell them now 😀

    just found my old mz-r30 i bought when i was a soldiet in Bosnia/ex-yugoslavia back in the 90`s
    It has not been used at all for 20+ years.
    I was curious and plugged it in, battery is dead, but otherwise it works perfectly.
    What a quality product :-D

      Great to hear. Replacement batteries are less than £20 on eBay, but I haven't tried them. Enjoy!

    This was the device I owned back in the day. I worked a summer job to afford an MDS-JE700 stereo deck and an R30 walkman. It took me through my years at the university, working flawlessly - until it took a bath in Coca-Cola which killed it, probably through some acid corrosion on the extremely integrated circuit board. I ultimately replaced it with a Creative MP3 player. But no matter how good the MP3 file was, it couldn't match the R30's sound quality. This goes to show that a decent output amp is really worth something.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh no! A terrible sticky end to a lovely player. MP3 was more convenient, but not as good.

    • @svenschwingel8632
      @svenschwingel8632 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CBitsTech it depends on the MP3 codec really. When the LAME mp3 encoder reached maturity in ~2002, it was able to achieve transparent audio quality at variable bitrate setting with 224-256 kbps average. But: mp3 wasn't a gapless format (which sucked for live albums unless you had a player that could do some trickery) and its fixed blocksize meant that the codec sometimes chose a too low bit allocation for transient signals within a given data block.
      But by 2002, ATRAC had also evolved into ATRAC4, offering 1GB HiMD with lossless audio, standard compression and LP2/4. MD was ultimately not driven out by mp3 per se, but the harddisk iPod and the ability to flawlessly extract audio and burn it on the PC.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And the ability to download (legally and illegally).

    • @svenschwingel8632
      @svenschwingel8632 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CBitsTech that too. Although I am a person that prefers to actually own the physical medium like the CD or LP 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer digital media that I actually own (not rent from Google or Apple), but it's harder to get than physical media. The rental model does give more opportunity to try new music though.
      PS. Sorry for the late reply, been very busy for weeks.

    My MZ-R30 has an adaptor for 2 AA batteries. Not sure why the PSU was 6v. Perhaps this is needed for charging, or perhaps they just used the same charger as other devices and dropped the voltage internally. The machine does NOT have MDLP, only SP and Mono. Unfortunately, the buttons on the front and beside the display no longer work. I think the display is much better than most of the later ones.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a shame yours isn't working. I agree, the display is very good.
      Yes, the 6V charger is for charging the 3.7V battery.
      SP only is a shame, but Line Out is very handy sometimes.

    • @roysainsbury4556
      @roysainsbury4556 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I forget to mention that the built-in clock is only for time-stamping recordings. It does not have a clock display. Mono mode is useful for doubling recording time for things like audio books where stereo isn't needed. These days i use an R501 which has MDLP, but a disappointing display.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agreed, some smaller players don't have very good displays. I like my MZ-N707 for the display.
      I bought some discs (video goes live Friday week) and some had mono music on them to double the playtime. Mono is really noticeable, but for books it would be ok.
      I can't see the point in time stamping recordings, not for music.

    • @roysainsbury4556
      @roysainsbury4556 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As for time-stamping recordings, it has a mic input as well as line, so you might want to time-stamp a live recording. In think the H-MD recorder time-stamps recordings as well. I'm deaf in 1 ear, so mono is better as I don't miss the sound from the deaf size!

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ah, yes, for voice recordings, office meetings etc, time-stamps make a lot of sense.
      I often listen to podcasts (on my phone) with one earbud; and mono would be handy for that otherwise one person seems too quiet.

    On the point of bbc, i think they did use them mostly for recording with journalists i assume. My dad brought me an MZ R30 home from the bbc in which he works today actually 😂. Its in pretty good condition too. Early birthday gift i guess.

      @@CBitsTech I did in fact acquire mine, and for $50 usd I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but it was pretty internally trashed. The classic lazy battery issue, with severe damage to the power supply of the board, including some traces eaten right out of the PCB by the hydroxide. I can't see why the laser, carriage, erase-head, outer case or perhaps some other internal mechanisms can't be used in another unit though. If you need any parts for one of your machines. I'd be happy to send some over.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hgrunt100 That's very kind of you, although I doubt I'll ever be good enough to swap out those components.
      Sounds like you've been really unlucky with that one. Usually, if there's battery corrosion that's bad it discolours the outside on the unit too, so I usually avoid those.

    • @hgrunt100
      @hgrunt100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CBitsTech That's understandable, but should you ever want to take a crack at it, just let me know.
      And yeah, that was the surprise was how nice the exterior was. No indicators of that leakage at all, or perhaps the seller had cleaned the outside up very carefully to disguise what would have been more obvious. Shame really, since I actually appreciate the design of this Recorder more than most of the early 2000s styles

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hgrunt100 Will do, thanks.
      If the unit you bought was sold as not working then there's nothing you can do really. I like the look of these units too, they look 'functional' with all the buttons on display, unlike some of the later players with minimal buttons. Too heavy for portable use though, IMO.

  • @tomrhardwick
    @tomrhardwick 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yup, I have the MZ-R35 which is presumably the next version along. It looks almost exactly like the R30 and they both take the Sony battery case EBP-MZR4, and that holds two AA cells and screws into that centre threads between the gold contacts. It's grey plastic and doesn't match at all well, but is a backup when the big 1350 mAh Li-ion fails. I use my MD alongside a portable WiFi speaker and I really love it. I could send photos of you like.

    I found one in the electronic dumpster at work, is it worth keeping? Got to get hold of a adapter to see if it even starts up! Where to find minidiscs for it if it turns out to work properly? Unfortunately I haven't found the battery for it...

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry for the delay in replying. Yes, it's worth keeping. You can buy 3rd party adapters that will work from Amazon and other shops. I have shot a video about third party adapters but haven't had a chance to edit it and upload it yet. Subscribe and click the notification bell icon, the adapter video will be one of the next few I upload. Regarding the battery, I think it's unlikely you'll need a 3.6v LIP-12(H) compatible one. There are some on Amazon and Ebay for around £20 to £25 but I have only used my original. Don't throw away recorder/player, sell it on ebay untested of you don't want it. Thanks.

    I just bought an R50 without any bids for 42€ !!!!! IT IS THIS OLD AND METAL TOOOOOO ?! I could not tell which year it was because I was betting on selling it again if I dont find good music and cheaper MiniDiscs at all to get some of my music and new music to listen too. There is even the battery adapter included. Hope it works. Got my first MiniDisc with Synthwave, my favourite pre recorded genre when spotify dont count.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good price if it's working.
      Is it the large size one? I think there's a large R50, and a smaller more portable one.
      I like a little synthwave sometimes, but prefer mostly old-school pop.
      You can get used Minidiscs as a bundle for around €1.50 each (on eBay.co.uk anyway). If you don't like the music, you can add your own.

    Just unearthed one of these going through my late father-in-laws old bits of tech equipment. He was a folk dance caller and back in the day he favoured making minidisc compilations with all the dance tunes on them that he needed. I guess they were better for not skipping when people got enthusiastic dancing on bouncy wooden village hall floors. I have yet to find the battery for this and test it but it looks mint and has the battery pack you clip on the side. My 11 year old has started using his DHC-MD373 hooked up to some old Goodmans speakers and loves the big sound she is getting playing CDs on it. There's a hifi separate Sony MD player to dig out too plus no doubt somewhere lots of discs with folk music on them. I never got into the format myself at the time it was popular but I can see the attraction of it. I might sell some of his equipment and keep others. Is ebay the best place to sell?

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an interesting find. Sorry for your loss though.
      I prefer eBay as the place to buy and sell because of the buyer and seller protections. Facebook might work too, but I'm not a fan.

    • @CBitsTech
      @CBitsTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I didn't even notice it. It didn't seem to function as a cut-off switch, so I did a bit of Googling and found this on an Amazon listing (item no longer available) "its just a mechanical indicator so when they have charged switch over to red dot and then when dead switch back so if you have multiple batteries you know the state of use."
      Does it play anything (even with the screen off)? If not, your battery could be completely dead (although mine does work) and I suspect it could be your charger. Do you have a multimeter to check the voltage at the tip? You need 6V centre positive. This is the aftermarket one I use for mine. Make sure you get the 2250mA one. www.amazon.co.uk/PIFCO-ELA1136-2250-Adaptor-Black/dp/B078H4FHFP
      Good luck!
