Words can't describe how elegant and passionate this is.... when he picks up the tenor after the EWI....simply the benchmark for modern saxophone playing. Indeed - RIP Brecker. You know, I have never liked the heavy chorus on Stern's guitar. Just makes it muddy. And he RIPS, so why not let it shine through the mix better?
This was the first performance of Michael i saw after he died (when i was around 16 yo but already a big Fan of him). Since then this is my absolute favorite moment in music. Nothing fills me more with happiness and sadness at the same time.
My admiration to this performance could not be higher! But RIP not only to Mickael Brecker, but also to Hiram Bullock, who played the guitar-solo on the studio-recording of this song.
I met Mike Brecker a number of times and hung out with him all night one night in Detroit. I cried my ass off when I found out he died and I attended his NYC memorial. Mike Stern said he'd let me sit in. Steve Gadd heard me play and said I sounded great.
Every single Mike's solo on "Trains" is amazingly emotional, the melody he put in it is absolutely incredible and making my eyes wet everytime. It's merely impossible to conceive, but it is. He was a true genious of harmony. The best leaves first, always. So unfair. RIP Mike.
Oh what a group of fabulous musicians. There are very few masters of the sax; Grover Washington, David Sanborn, Paul Desmond, but there is only one Michael Becker. May he rest in peace and play for the Angel’s. Thank you for posting this concert to great music.
This tune is Magic for me. It was magic in the eighties and is magic today. It lifts the spirits, always. This tune is what the inmense majority of pop rock music and smooth jazz alike would like have been, and when they acknowledged that way to be too hard, decided to take other easier, pathetic, ego oriented and money oriented paths, sadly. R.I.P Michael.
il grande, immenso MICHAEL BRECKER prima di lasciarci tocca il cielo con una formazione non perfettamente STEPS ma con grandi comprimari e se si potesse riavere sui palchi questi sommi artisti.....che godimento,
Thank you for sharing this post!!!! I couldn't help but cry!! This brought so much joy to me thank you!!! Thank Michael for your passion!! Thank the whole band!! Everyone playing deserves appreciation and acknowledgment! My heart has been feed! 🔥💛
Steps Ahead...so many top shelf line-ups with Mike Mainieri being the dominant constant. SO good. Love Brecker's playing and really dig how he can make a EWI sing.
Mystery to me what exactly that "Akai EWI-ish" wind controller that Prof. Breaker is playing. Pure butter, and that's using a wind controller! MICHAEL BRECKER, Thanks SO Much Man. p.s. I play a Guardala on my tenor, because MB did.
Steve Gadd and his incredible 12-minute, imperceptible crescendo. Nobody can measure the arc of an arrangement and develop it like Gadd can. To notice the subtle changes he makes to develop the form you have to listen so closely, but their effect is there, whether you realize it or not. Just incredible. It's an art he brings to so much of the music he plays. Of course, he doesn't do it alone here; as the band builds, it's amazing to realize they are STILL building and not done yet!
@@Minotauro_di_Chieti OK. Have you heard of a thing called "hyperbole"? There are indeed other drummers who have a good sense of an arrangement's form and can develop it. But, even speaking more literally, there is no denying that Gadd is a master at it, and his vocabulary of subtle changes just always works.
Frodohotep I agree, what Gadd is doing here is, as always, putting all his talent in the tune and forgetting about himself. I knew the version with Erskine, who is a very dynamic drummer (meaning he can play from ppp to fff) and Gadd brings it to another level. Cobham could do something like that, he has the fineness, and the power. Not much people have this palette. DeJohnette can be very delicate and also extremely powerful. Anyway, this is why they hire Gadd.
Absolutely anything by the Steps Ahead blows my mind, and its a gateway to the soul. Good to see the late, great Michael Brecker in fantastic shape. Thanks for uploading this video!

Ο.30- 0.45'' citation from Pat Metheny's 80/81.. This song is great, actually...between 80/81.. and Weather Report- the interlude is.. Cristopher Cross, and the solos pure latin fusion ..Brecker's parts are pure heaven..
The EWI (mouth synthesizer/sax-o-synth) + 'Tranian tenor saxophone.. I can see Spirits as they jubilantly flounce out to dance; for Michael IS in the House.

One of the greatest jazz groups of all time. All legends.
Steve Gadd laying down a sweet pocket groove, is as fun to watch/hear as any of his solos!!!!!!!
Michael Brecker, immenso ! Ci manchi e manchi a tutto il jazz. RIP grandissimo
Micheal Brecker means every note he plays you can feel it, immediately impact! An extension of Trane in my eyes. Stern- unstoppable!
This is how a great solo sounds when death is on your heels. If it was not for Michael Brecker playing Trains, I would not be in jazz.

Even today musicians can’t replicate this kind of emotions in music. Steps Ahead and Weather Report is still the best fusion bands you can listen to.

That is not the prototype EWI. It came out much earlier - 1983 or 84
