    What do you think about the new Puri Bag Pro?

    • @redneckgimpreview
      @redneckgimpreview ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's an interesting concept, but I would still run the water through my Grayl to make sure I get all of the possible contaminants. I'll use a milbank bag and pre-filter the water that way to remove the debris first.

      It would be great if I could test the bag, take a sample of water to the lab to put under the scope and also culture a drop to see if anything grows.

      Question, sir. For biological contamination the Puri Bag seems to fine. However, how does it handle any chemical contaminants? Also, ph based issues, like excessive alkalinity or acidity? Plus any smaller Biologics and elemental compounds like viruses or lead contamination. It may sound a bit much, but you’d be surprised how many ponds and even lakes that have fertiliser contamination or more common viral issues much smaller than any bacteria or pond scum there. And in certain other environments such as deserts, alkaline water can be deadly. Thank you for your reply, in advance. -CuriousMind

      the chemicals are reduced from the carbon filter. The chemicals were talking about is chlorine so the same in tap water, there's nothing to worry about.

    Just found this. Think I'll add this to my preps. I was a Wilderness Guard for the Forest Service in the late 70's and contracted what I believe was Giardia. Very sick for days off the trail at over 7'000 feet. A system like this would have prevented that and looks to be easy to pack.

    The 5 minute workout, I wonder if it would work attached to a pack while walking, maybe double the agitation time to 10 minutes. Being crazy bored for 5 minutes would be the only downside, but it’s a small sacrifice for that much potential clean water. I’ve definitely pumped water through a filter much longer than 5 minutes before.
    I like that it packs down to be pretty small & light for the amount of water you’ll have access to.

    I'm the Chief Plant Operator of one the largest water agencies in Southern California, and novice hiker. The 99.99%, 99.9%, and 99% removal refers to a logarithmic removal of viruses, Giardia, and Cryptosporidium. The fact that the system coagulates, flocculates, disinfects, and filters pretty much guarantees that it will achieve said logarithm. If you smell chlorine in the bag, after the 30 minutes, or you test the chlorine residual from the unfiltered water, that water is safe to drink. Of course, it will not filter disinfection by-products, PFAS, pharmaceuticals, VOC's, etc.

    i have to wonder about the chemical pack you pour in - whats the long term effects of drinking that?

    • @impactguide
      @impactguide หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm guessing, not too bad... probably on the level of eating a lot of pickled foods or salty for a very long period. It is probably likely less harmfull than say drinking a couple beers a day, for an extended period. My reasoning is that the chemical causing the coagulation/flockulation is often aluminium sulfate or iron (III) chloride, and both are very, very common chemicals used to treat water all across the world. In essence these chemicals are salts; in some aspects bit like table salt but in other aspects quite different. In low concentrations they are harmless, just as salt in low concentrations is no problem for the human body. Chlorine dioxide or bleach in low concentrations is also safe: in many large cities the tap water has a slight chlorine taste; you will find a similar taste with these packs. The goals of these chemicals is different: the coagulant removes particles from the water and clumps them together. It doesn't really kill a lot of stuff though; the chlorine or bleach does (after some time, say 30m).
      However, the best argument is this: without water, you will die in 3-4 days. With chemically treated water you will surely live longer than that. If you ever come into a true survival situation (a zombie apocalypse of course being the most likely and coolest, but a war being the more horrible one), your long term life expectency will immediately stop becomming a concern. Every day you will fight to survive (hence the name), and every day will suck.
      For camping meh, you could use it, but if you're just having fun anyway, and want to avoid any chemicals, you can just boil the water :). I hope you liked this answer; explore the science behind if you want, it's pretty cool stuff.

    My only problem with this is that it's made by Procter and Gamble which is a company that is known for certain problems in safety. I worry that the chemical packet might have side effects that are not good for you.
