  • So they did not lose both ice machines at the same time, usually one goes down and they aren't that busy so they don't even notice. Than the other goes down and they are in panic mode.

Manager: there's two ice machines, so I wait with calling service until both are down, to save money.

If that's the "thinking" of MY Manager, they'll be my EX-Manager REALLY frigging quick...
If I owned a Restaurant, I'd tell ALL my Manglement Staff that we have redundant equipment (2 Ice Machines, 2 Fryers etc.) for a reason and when one fails, THAT'S THE TIME TO CALL THE REPAIR TECH...
Waiting until both fail before calling the Repair Techs WILL get you Fired FOR CAUSE!!!
Not only would I tell them that during Training, but it'll also be written down in the Policy Manual too...
Another Policy I'd have is Preventative Maintenance is the BEST way to save money/cut costs...keeping the equipment (especially the roof mounted A/C's & Exhaust Fans) clean and in good working order is the best possible way to prevent expensive downtime/repairs due to broken equipment so the first time ANYONE cheeps out on PM to "Save Money" to the last time they work for me...Cheeping out on PM is also a Fireable Offense...and I don't care if you've never had a verbal or written warning before, make either mistake and it's strike one, you're out!

Nothing wrong with talking to yourself - heck it's even encouraged sometimes. Pilots are encouraged or even required to speak out loud the steps they are going through, and it's not just for the sake of verification/communication. There are many studies showing that so called "self-explaining" is very effective.

Agreed. I walk myself through almost everything I do just cause I easily forget what im supposed to be doing. Talkin to myself keeps me from missing something. Very important when you are dealing with equipment that stores cash, ATM, safes, etc, or equipment that has dangerous chemicals in it that could potentially kill someone if you miss a step.

It's not unusual for certain electronics to enter "programming mode" when the touchpad is failing. Probably from false signals e.g. "hold down X button for 30 seconds to enter programming mode". Also makes the other buttons non-responsive when it thinks one is held down 100% of the time.

I've replaced probably 15 of those touch pads in the last year. The buttons simply stop working. Same with those fan cycle switches, they exist primarily to keep the discharge pressure high enough during harvest, but the tiny switch inside it just can't handle the load of the fan. What I normally do is wire the fan through a real relay, and switch the relay with the fan cycle control. There's a brand that starts with H, and they make a far superior ice machine.

The low head pressure on these Manitowocs on harvest is by design. They call it a CVD, or Cool Vapor Defrost. "To make hot gas systems work, the compressor must be as physically close to the ice making evaporator as possible. This also means the noise from the compressor is always concentrated at the ice making part of the system. This is not something you want in a customer environment. Manitowoc CVD ice machines use vapor refrigerant from the receiver tank to harvest the ice." -- from Manitowoc literature

The ice thickness sensor on the Indigo machines isn't really a sensor. It's a microphone, and that's what its showing you on the control board the 'volume' of 100hz, and 120hz noise of the water trickling is what it's picking up. Be careful while running these machines with the covers off, I've had issues trying to troubleshoot something with the front panel off, and they have a radio or bluetooth speaker in the kitchen playing music extremely loud. Very loud music can mess it up. If all the covers are on the machine, it's good enough sound proofing, and doesn't seem to bother anything. Not much of an issue, but if you're working on one of these machines, tell them to keep the music down. Saves you two headaches, one from 'long freeze' and the other from the 90+ dB of loud music.... :D Keep up the good work.

Couple months ago We we’re fixing a manitowic ice machine like that and we needed a new display. We put it in and the some buttons were doing nothing. We maybe thought it was a faulty display or bad Circuit board. Maybe a half hour later we got it. It was off by an 1/16 of an inch from the front facing plastic cover. lmao 🤦‍♂️

What does a "long harvest" actually mean? I'm a trainee restaurant technician, the stores I'd work at all use Manitowoc machines and my knowledge is still very thin.

Fun fact, your standard #2 pencil is the correct spacing for the thickness sensor

the 2 guys we had teaching a Manitowoc class were hesitant when someone suggested this but I believe you are correct.

I did the thermostat in the return on a 50 ton intellipak. Board was or still is months out.

On a manitowoc if the fan cycle isn’t in line the fan will run 100% of the time causing a long harvest. Head pressure drops to low. They will never work bypassed.

i work on ice machines with the fountain beverage company i work for. we have plenty because my boss wants to be one stop shop for people beverage needs, aside from beer kegs.
and when i show up to an ice machine down i do the same thing, i restart it and watch it run. but what i didnt know with the Indigo series is that i could activate the relays and see what happens. some of our units are in areas with terrible water and that will be very useful.
of course we dont do the roof top compressor units. and when the compressors an issue im always out of my league.

Replaced many of those touch pads. No need to replace the display itself; the touch pad itself is always the problem.

Excellent video. Great details. On the Tee that you use, is that a female flare connector or a 1/4 SAE with rubber seals?

04:28 - One reason tangles, kinks and twists and curls, too loose or too tight or too bent wires and hoses, too loose plugs & connectors etc. trigger my OCD. People don't know how bad it is to be careless about those.
