Read 'hidden life of trees'. Answer, probably. They grow away from things that damage them, justbas we would move our hands from heat. Likely due to pain receptors.
This tree will probably die from infection. Trunk innards exposed, roots messed with and branches cut all in one. Typically we say only one insult per season!

Thanks for sharing. I began by making blackthorn walking sticks, ten years ago. That’s what got me started in Bonsai. I decided that every tree I took a stick from, I would gather some seeds each November, so I could give back to nature. It’s amazing that I cannot get them to survive in my garden, but they have taken in local wasteland., along with hawthorn. I never make Jin’s or Shari’s but they look so great on the blackthorn. Thanks again for posting.

But what species can one do this on? How long do the literati survive for? Is it best as an outdoor feature or to be in doors? After the split is any additional work needed to protect the core of the trees?

Great fun! I am learning a lot. I am thinking of splitting a big mulberry tree I have. 🌲🌵🌳🍃🍀☘️🌾🌹

Would an evergreen have the same success rate as that of a decidious tree undergoing trunk splitting? Do you use additional safety measures for evergreens?

Peter, have you ever had a tree that you've had to leave for a while and keep looking at until you made a decision as to which way too develop it?

Of course! There are scores of problem trees around the nursery - they are left in prominent places where I can see them, so that every time I pass a problem tree - I try to figure out what might be done to solve that problem.

@@peterchan3100 So glad to hear that! I see you grab a tree and quickly bend it to your will LOL but often wondered if you have the ongoing creative process the same as the rest of us!? thank you for responding. I wish we had a NZ based bonsai person so I could get some insight to our difficult native tree... :)
