ive been taking guitar classes for 2 months now (once a week, 30min class) and the only reason for the class was to learn Purple Rain.. (Bucket List lol) anyway ive been watching your video everyday maybe 4-6 times a day teaching myself this.. Thank You Marty fyi. my only problem is getting my fingers right on the C chord, and of course the strum beat or muted beat, but I will get it.Thanks again your're an excellent teacher

Thanks. It's okay to simplify tunes in order to play and sing with your acoustic guitar. You do a nice honest rendition of the song which is better served since you are not trying to get all fancy. You're just one guy with an acoustic guitar. You're not trying to "axe it up," and you are generously helping others to experience the joy of music without showing off. I have sat around far too many camp fires where some guy gets his hand on an acoustic and then proceeds to stare down at the strings while stumbling through some Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Prince or whom ever's piece of music as though he's got a "strat'" and 5 500 watt Marshall amps. People tend to wander off or simply talk over him. Meanwhile, the woman next to him picks up an old acoustic and plays simple chords while singing her own versions of songs by Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez but also Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and even Prince which draw everyone into the music for she is a songster--not a show off. Not all prince songs are great acoustic around the camp fire songs, but you have shown me that this one is. That's a gift. That's a new song that my tired old arthritic hands can possibly handle playing on my beat up old six string. I especially appreciate watching your fingers. I was able to get that there was a D major hanging on for one more measure than I thought. You taught me and others how to play a song that I otherwise would have never learned. Thanks again--MJK

Marty, I just found your videos and noticed you have been on here for years. Where have I been?! I have been playing guitar since I was 12, I just turned 50, and I have to tell you, after all those years of guitar lessons, trying to memorize notes, theory, and everything that goes along with it, I have learned just about as much from you in 1 month then I have over all those years of plinking and picking. My buddies, one who plays drums, another on bass and myself have been getting together once a week or so for over 20 years just to make noise and have a few beers, and after spending a few hours watching you and your technique, we got together and his jaw dropped when I started playing what I've learned from you. Very easy and concise lessons. Even though my technique may be a little more advanced then some of your followers, I have been making it so much more difficult then what It should have been all these years. And to top it off, we have the same taste in music and same reach in vocals, as I'm also the singer. My buddies and myself may even start playing at some friends parties now. Night and day difference in our sound now. Thanks for your time and effort!Great job!Dave.

Very Well Done. I Like How You Changed The Chords To Make Them More Compatible With Your Voice. The B Flat Sus 2 and The E Flat In Prince's Version Are A Little Cumbersome. You're Very Talented And Altruistic.

hi party marty was a simple way to keep strumming a 4 down stokes wille changing the chords all so if u mis a chord is the most inpointant thing is to keep strumming

This is a great version. I would like to see the order of the chords during the song. For example, certain parts of the song require the chords to go out of order so it isn't a straight progression. I hope i am explaining what I am trying to say so it makes sense. Sometimes, people put the chords over the written lyrics, I guess that is a better way to say it.

that lift-off on the C chord [1:06] "waiting on a friend" - is that how they start off ? - plus the timing is like when Charlie comes in at the start of "indian girl" - elliptical type of rolling that never gets back to the very first intro beat - the first lift-off example [of the three] reminds me of it - dum doo aah - 1 2 an' - it's at 1:04 actually : good lesson - that C lift-off sound - thanks for that - off to U Tube for "indian girl" then "...friend"

I believe Prince plays it in Bbm but it seems to work in G.

Fantastic! I noticed you got away from Em for the last third of the song or so and just stuck with G C D. All other tutorials I've seen kept Em in the rotation the whole way through.
