I have the salt and pepper shakers and have kind of a love/hate relationship with them. It's very easy to over salt your food because as soon as you tip it over, a bunch of fine salt plops out from the previous time you used it. Because of that, it's actually still a two-handed operation for me, since I dispense it into my hand before sprinkling it on my food. The measuring spoon seems promising, but I kind of wish you'd tried it with a less viscous liquid before calling it water tight.
@@nevermore0 The advantage is that you can buy Kosher salt with large grains and grind it to the size you need, depending on what you're using it for, without having anti-caking and iodine additives that are in many table salts.
I was wondering this too. In my opinion you cant measure a right amount. With manual turning or ever a button you can stop it in an instant, but here you first need to turn it upright while it keeps dispensing.
A low-high switch would make it more user friendly from table to stove. You don't want to dump a ton of salt or pepper on your food but you don't want to wait forever when prepping the meal.
I inherited one of those push measure cups from my mom who got it from one of those home kitchen items party. It seriously rocks, especially if you bake and need to use sticky things like peanut butter, honey, corn syrup, etc. Barely anything left behind and easy to clean.
I've always wondered about the quality of the adjust a cup & these auto salt n pepper mills. U never know how they're going to hold up with everyday use so I'm looking forward to your 1 year review of them. So grateful to u for doing that by the way, no one else I know of does 1 yr reviews & they're so incredibly helpful!!! Sometimes I can't believe a full year has gone by bc I feel like I just watched the original review...time sure does fly in the product review world, lol.
I've had the adjust-a-cup for over a decade; works really well for peanut butter, solidified fats, tomato paste, and similar. Other than that, I wouldn't use it for liquids.
Sal n pepper suck because they only adjust from course to chunky. Really there’s no fine setting. Disappointed he didn’t report that. I’ve owned those exact ones and they broke quick and batteries also would get low fast and the grind would start to suffer. I’ve bought some others that I love on Amazon. Just stay away from these “gravity” ones..
I remember watching Good Eats with Alton Brown on food Network years ago and he had an adjustable measuring cup as well. He mostly used it for thick liquids like honey.
Pampered chef's been selling them for years also. I've had my set for has to be close to 15 years now. I like those over this because the plunger is actually the cup for liquids. You pour liquids in one way and solids in from the other side (I'm not explaining it well, but go hunt up the aforementioned Good Eats and you should see what I mean.)
Was coming to the comments for this reference. Loved watching him when I was back in highschool. Been over ten years now since I've had my adjust-a-cup. No issues at all.
You should try peanut butter or honey in the adjusta cup. Then you push the honey or pb out by pushing up from the bottom. It is sold as no mess measuring. It should work well
I’ve had two adjust-a-cups for more than a decade and they still look like new. They’re especially good for measuring things like sour cream or brown sugar because you can use it like a plunger to get the ingredients out. Much easier than a regular measuring cup. I put a little bit of olive oil around the seal after I wash it to keep the rubber conditioned.
I have to say thank you for all the work you do with the reviews here. I mentioned this before but I have no doubt that you have saved people a lot of money with the revies you have done on here. I am glad, even with a huge channel membership you have that you give your honest thoughts on products. You seem like a down to earth guy and someone who gets along well with everyone. Accuracy is important in cooking, and those were large margins for error. Personally both the adjust-a-cup and spoon would be a hard pass from me. Also for the water-tight test, maybe using a thin liquid like vanilla extract or water would be more helpful than a thick syrup?
I find my adjustable measuring cup helpful only for sticky ingredients like honey, peanut butter, corn syrup, etc. A lot easier than trying to scrape the sticky stuff out of a regular cup measurer. But otherwise, I totally agree, to easy to mismeasure an important ingredient.
I've been using the pepper grinder for about 3 years now and it's been fantastic the whole time. Sometimes it needs a small shake to get the corns in the right orientation but works great.
Would have been fun and informative to see a battery life test on the salt & pepper shakers. 12 batteries is a lot nowadays! Also the people that said the salt and pepper shakers stopped working after a few months - since the duo requires TWELVE batteries, I bet one of the batteries eventually leaked and corroded the terminals. Something to watch out for long term with anything that uses batteries. (Clean the contacts every so often with isopropyl alcohol)
Adjustable measuring cups have been around forever and IMO, they rock. I just finally had to replace my OXO one, which my mom bought in the 2000s. Naturally the one I just bought isn't as sturdy as my old one, but it seems to work fine so far. They're especially great for measuring thick, hard-to-pour ingredients like honey, molasses, corn syrup, etc.
I have had my stainless battery-operated salt and pepper mills for almost 2 years. I ❤LOVE❤ them and 💯% recommend them to EVERYONE, especially those with arthritis/dexterity issues in their hands. Also, I have been able to let it go on it's own in my salt/pepper box. When it sounds like it needs more product, I give it a shake and it continues. I don't let it go for too long, but it's handy if you need to use your hands for something or if you don't want steam clogging the gears and you want to fill a salt/pepper box faster. I can't say enough praises about these shakers.
I bought those same salt and pepper mills. The pepper worked well however, the salt quit after about 8 months. It seems that the salt corroded the metal shaft and it got stuck thus burning out the motor. I tried to get a replacement but, the company didn't respond. So I went back to the manual one that I used for years. Now, on the manual one, I disassemble it after every "tank full" and rinse the salt out and let it air dry for a day. It seems to work great.
One of my favorite TH-camrs. My favorite product reviewer. Thank you!! Also Ima get the salt and pepper non shakers lol. And can't wait to see the update video of them.
I have had that pepper mill for 3 years now, and I love it and use it daily. I even bought one for my Mother in Law because she liked mine. The batteries last a really long time.
The adjustable measuring cup is one of the few gadgets you've reviewed I actually have. It comes in handy when I'm measuring out the dry milk for my cereal in the morning
I literally just saw that same exact salt & pepper shaker a Goodwill. Still new in box, I didn't buy cause, well 12 batteries is like a whole new pack of batteries. I saw them a week ago.
I bought the salt and pepper grinder for my mom’s birthday. She likes them so far but if they fall onto the ground it will activate causing salt or pepper to to continuously grind
you got me convinced about thinking about eletric grinders. the adjust a scoop is a prized tool, fantastic for sticky stuff like peanut butter dumping everything in one plunge... and the adjustable a table spoon is a hit or miss for you would have to rinse almost each messuring to ensure proper messuring . but all good gadgets to keep in the kitchen
The measuring cup and spoon are very similar to what Pampered Chef sells with the difference in the cup being that the Pampered Chef cup has an open cup for liquids and the push up part for dry items, which I prefer.
I have those. One thing I feel like he missed in testing (unless he goes back, I didn't finish the video) is using the adusta cup for things like peanut butter. It's great to just fill it, then push it out using the base.
I've had the salt and pepper grinders for about 9 months now and still use them daily. I haven't had to change the batteries yet (although i figure it is coming soon). It's a great product, and i highly recommend
The measuring cup and spoon are the same concept that Pampered Chef came out with a long time ago. I always loved them! I don't know if that company is still around, but I'm willing to bet that their prices are still ridiculous 🤷🏼♀️ Thanks for the review!
The measuring cup seems pretty cool. As a note; never scoop flour. You will be using too much flour. Spoon the flour into the cup and tap the cup to level it. :)
The adjust a cup is for things that are hard to get out of a mesuring cup, like peanut better, anything really sticky and thick. Not for water or dry ingredients like oat meal. They are to be pushed up and out, leaving almost nothing in the dispenser. I have one from Pampered Chef and it works great.
I've had both the adjust-a-cup and adjust-a-tablespoon for over a decade and love them both. They work best for solidified items like peanut butter, tomato paste, etc.
I'm having one of those adjustable cups when I was a kid, the only place At the time that was available was pampered chef. It was best for like the sticky stuff because you could push it out, stuff like peanut butter or honey. You push it out from the bottom. Mom still has hers. You don't have to scrape stuff out. You push it and it comes out in one glob.
Have the one button (at the top) salt/pepper mill. Works really well, prefer it over gravity one as you can accurately control the amount to mill and still only use one hand
I have had the same Kitchen Aid adjustable measuring spoons for easily over 10 years (the version in this review and a smaller version.) They are my exclusive measuring spoons and still look brand new.
Can't wait to use the salt and pepper mills that I got for Christmas. 6 batteries I didn't see coming! I know you still love them since they made your 2023 top ten. If you like them I will as well. I've been a fan since the beginning, and I have to say you are a gift. I literally check to see if you have reviewed a product before buying. You have saved me money. Thank you, and Merry Christmas.
I have had the salt and pepper shakers for almost 2 years. They are our everyday salt and pepper shakers and I have not needed to change the batteries yet! Great video! I have been considering the tablespoon for a while, I will give it a try now.
You push the plunger from the bottom to empty contents on adjust a cup, thats the point of it, to get all the sticky ingredients out for you, twist the bottom up and voila, thanks James , you are awesome !❤
I bought the exact shakers a few weeks ago and so far, love them. Turning them upside down is still more intuitive then years of holding upright & pushing a button or twisting plus they don't leak out bottom in the cabinet. We'll see if the coarse natural sea salt I use breaks it or not as it's taken down quite a few grinders.
I never use dry measuring devices but instead, I use a kitchen scale and weigh them, measuring the quantities by weight, not volume. As to the S&P, my money says in three months they will both fail miserably. Reason I say that is both sounded like they were struggling as they ground both the salt and the pepper. Good luck....I think you're going to need it!
i am very bias when it comes to measuring units...i love to bake and you need to be pretty precise when it comes to baking. i dont think i would use anything like those adjust-a-cups for baking, that is for sure. now that i am older, i have actually started using a scale! alot of americans don't really do that, i would have to say, but once you start you will notice a difference and it's pretty cool :D
I thought about getting the salt & pepper grinder you tested but didn't like the battery aspect or the reviews on it over pouring. I instead went with a set that could be recharged and dispenses with the push of a button. It also has the light function, comes with a nice stand where you can set up the recharging and can be found on Amazon. It was more expensive but as I never have to buy batteries for it or worry about adding too much salt or pepper to my food, it is well worth it.
I've had the adjustable measuring cup and spoon for several years, and I do like them. I think I got mine from Pampered Chef in the early 2010s. The numbers are still on the cup, and the spoon has no issues.
So I bought the same salt and pepper grinders about a month ago and so far they have been doing great. I bought a different set 2 years ago and those held up fine until I tried to "clean" them. Those took 6 batteries each also and we only ended up changing them out once in 2 years. I took the batteries out of the old set and put them in the new ones and they are still going strong. Thanks for the video!
0:59 something I usually recommend to people (esp those with dexterity issues) is don’t try to turn the small end of a mill - hold that part and turn the larger up-ended part, where you even have the option to put your hand on (what is now) the very top (almost like a door knob)
I used to have a similar salt & pepper mill, but the battery consumption was ridiculous. I had to replace the batteries probably every three months. I upgraded to a USB rechargeable set, and I LOVE IT! So so so much better! Same other features, gravity, adjustable grind, light, etc. Well worth the switch.
I have the salt and pepper grinders. I love them. I've had them for over 2months. Use at least 3times a day and the original batteries are still going strong. Easy to use and has never clogged for me. It's a winner.
The problem with the Adjust A Cup is that you can't properly level the ingredients for recipes that need more precise measuring. Also is that dry or liquid cup, since there is a difference.
Almost 20 years ago I went to a Chef's something or other party. (Similar to a Tupperware party.) One of the things I purchased was a measuring cup, very similar to what you showed Except, you can use both ends. One is for liquids and the other for dry. That dry end is great for think gooey stuff like honey, because the one section slides down (Like a plunger). You don't have to turn around the outer piece because the markings for dry are upside-down from the liquid. I use it most everyday. I probably paid less than what that one cost. I also have measuring spoons like those..cheap version from WM. I'm not a fan.
I use the adjustable cup thing for shortening and peanut butter, butter or honey. Its great because it get all the the product off the sides. I also have the spoon. I use that a lot also.
Salt and Pepper mills are cool AF. Just bought 2 on ebay. Readily available in my country, the UK. Love your channel, keep up the great work dude 😊😊❤👍👍
the spoon holding the liquid actually surprised me, i have a cheaper but similar thing in one of my kitchen drawers and any liquid you put in it always leaks
The measuring cup and spoon sound clever, but usually when I use one in a recipe, I use multiple cups and spoons. Having to stop mid-recipe to wash my tools sounds frustrating. And I don't think they look accurate enough for baking. The mills would be great for someone with a disability, but I don't see a need for anything that expensive for most people.
That was exactly my thought - I would have to stop & wash that measuring spoon each time, because I don't necessarily want sugar in my salt or dry ingredients stuck to the leftover wet ingredients. Also, I don't see how it saves space - my measuring spoons nest into a stack that's smaller than that device, or I can hang them up. Same with the cup thingy, plus I use different cup sets for dry and wet ingredients so I'd still have to have extras. I'm not sure if the accuracy issue - because there definitely is one - was just him being too quick about it or if there's actually a problem, but I wouldn't trust either device from this video.
I have a pampered chef adjustable cup. The biggest difference is the plunger is hollow and translucent. You turn it upside down and fill the liquid into the plunger, which does have a spout. You use the measurements on the sleeve as the markings for the liquids. For the solids you flip it over and adjust the plunger to your measurement and fill all the way to the top. This way you can use a knife to level it off for exactness. I’ve had it for 10 yrs and it never leaked. I have the pepper mill but a different brand. I’ve had for a year and haven’t changed the batteries.
🎉about 10 years ago, we gifted a Gravity pepper grinder to a friend with hand dexterity issues. Back then, it had some functional issues, but when we finally got a unit that worked well it was a joy.. and fun to use. Got one for myself, and when cooking, I don't have to drop what I'm holding in one hand to add pepper. Battery life is good.
I had the same salt and pepper mills. I loved them at first, but the salt mill broke after 3 months of use. It was unusable and unfixable because the grinding gear is what broke.
That last item, the single measuring spoon is genius. Anyone who cooks or bakes knows the annoyance of using multiple spoons, and then storing them, which I have magnetic ones so it helps, but this is a great idea! Solves a problem you may not know you needed. A+ 😁
IDK I have had that spoon for a few years and I don't really use it, I normally just grab for my normal metal measuring spoons as I don't like the extra step having to take it apart and clean it (fishing around my sink for the paddle) than letting it dry and reassembling. Also the wide mouth doesn't fit into spice jars so the small measurements are essentially useless so I need the other set of spoons anyways.
@@Snofuz68 Good points. My wife also said the same thing about spice jars. I'm more of a pourer, so it wouldn't bother me as much, but you do make some good points. Maybe it still needs a bit tweeking... 😁👍
6 batteries is kinda crazy. they better last a really long time in there. i'm from europe so i don't have much use for measuring cups/spoons but maybe one day you can do a kitchen scale test for us 😅
@@Ea-Nasir_Copper_Co having a bad day? not sure why my comment upset you. i never said using a scale is superior to using volumetric measurements or anything like that!? just our recipes always call for weights instead of cups, so we don't have a use for measuring cups and utilize scales instead. different way to achieve the same result. (btw most kitchen scales are around 15€ and about the size of this adjustable cup)
The mills are quite impressive, but it seems like hard to control the speed or volume of the salt/pepper. A hand-turned mill is easier to control. And 6 AAA batteries each could get expensive depending on how long they last. I do like the Adjust-a-cup.
I posted above that I've had the mills over a year and only recently changed the batteries. Only con I've found is you need to shake the pepper mill occasionally to settle the corns to get an even dispersal.
I used to have one of those measuring spoons and it’s okay as long as your recipe needs only dry, wet or granulated ingredients. If you need say honey, salt, cinnamon and syrup you have to wash it every time you measure an ingredient but with regular measuring spoons, if you need different quantities, you only wash the whole set at the end.
We have been using the gravity salt and pepper mills for years now with no complaints. We love them and have even gifted some to family members who raved about ours
Yes I agree, but rechargeables are an option. Cool factor over rules anything though, so maybe just break them out for special occasions like a family gathering.
I have used that measuring spoon before. Over time the numbers come off from sliding the adjuster and it rubbing the black numbers off. It feels so chunky and takes up more space (longer) than my regular stacking measuring spoons.
I bought the adjustable measuring cup when I saw it on Alton Brown's Good Eats show. I use mine for thick ingredients like shortening, honey, sour cream, and the like, and I love it. I bought a push-button pepper mill, but these look and seem to work better than mine.
I have the gravity pepper & salt set, It take 6 AAA batteries for each one and I've noticed they get hung up at times with trying to use and sometimes nothing works you have to untwist it and move the batteries around for it work work again. The lighting is fine and it has several different settings by twisting the cap to set the desired grinding amount. Overall I do like them had them for about 2yrs now.
I have those exact salt and pepper mills and have had them for a little over 2 years now. They have held up fine and i use them every day multiple times a day as I am the primary cook in my household and make all 3 meals for multiple people. That being said the 6 triple A batteries is quite annoying but I find myself only having to change them every 4-6 months which isn’t terrible with how frequently I feel like I use them. The only salt I have ever used in them is Kirkland Pink Himalayan salt from Costco and it grinds fine just make sure you don’t loose the little brush that comes with the grinders because salt dust with accumulate and clog the grinder if not cleaned out once every few weeks or so. Similarly the only pepper I have ever used are the Kirkland whole black pepper corns from Costco and they grind fine and I have had no problems with the pepper clogging. My only complaint would be the adjustment knob for adjusting the fineness of the salt/pepper dispensed as it feels almost random the result you will get no matter which direction you turn the adjustment. Maybe that it just a problem with my units but that would be my only real complaint
As far as the electric salt and pepper mills are concerned, they're brilliant for people who have arthritis. I hope your lovely Bailey is well ❤️ Oops, I definitely missed this one!! Either I watched it and I've forgotten (which is a distinct possibility) or I didn't catch it when it was released!
I have those salt and pepper grinders. I love them. I've had them for a couple of years and they work great still. I've only had to replace the batteries maybe twice
Have had a pampered chef “adjust-a-cup”. It works great for viscous materials like peanut butter, Mayo, cream cheese, etc. use it like a plunger to get everything out.
I have the pepper grinder and have been using it regularly for I think about a year. I love it. Sometimes the blue light bothers me. I don’t think it really helps at all with seeing how much has come out.
I can see how the adjust a cup would be great for thick things like honey. You can push the bottom up when you're pouring it in and it will scrape the sides of the container and get out easier.
The adjust a cup is designed for messy ingreditents like Mayo, Honey, Pnut Butter, Corn Syrup. Had mine for almost 15 years. Used occasionaly, but mainly for viscous ingredients. Alton Brown mentions it his gadget review book. I think that's where I came across it.
I may have been watching this channel too long when I get excited about how there's going to be a video in a year about how well these items held up.

I’ve had those salt and pepper shakers for a little over 4 years and they are still working strong. Great devices!
I bought mine around the same time you did & I love them!! Also still going strong!! 💯
I don't know if that company is still around, but I'm willing to bet that their prices are still ridiculous 🤷🏼♀️
Thanks for the review!
They're an MLM so their prices have to be high so that the rep's upline also gets a share of their sales.
@@BewareTheLilyOfTheValley yeah I know. My bestie used to sell for them, so I got all my stuff at her cost. 😊
My pampered chef version is 20 years ears old. I had another brand before that
@@jenniefelix2283 mine too 🙂
6 batteries?!! That's enough to power a Sega Game Gear for almost 30 mins!
The measuring cup seems pretty cool. As a note; never scoop flour. You will be using too much flour. Spoon the flour into the cup and tap the cup to level it. :)
easier to use a kitchen scale once you convert recipes to one bowl measurements
Tapping the cup, settles, and compresses the flour. Just overfilled the cup and use straight edged knife to scrape off the excess
I also have an adjustable measuring cup from a Pampered Chef party I had 30 years ago. I use it almost every day. It's still clear and easy to read!
pampered chef has had these for a long time. love it
i’ve had mine since last christmas and the work great, love them
I've had both the adjust-a-cup and adjust-a-tablespoon for over a decade and love them both. They work best for solidified items like peanut butter, tomato paste, etc.
I never thought I would watch someone geek out on salt and pepper mills! Lol
I’ve had adjust a cup for over 10 yrs. I have always put it in the dish washer! Numbers look like new. No problems at all! A fav!
The salt and pepper grinders are really cool, but man that is a lot of batteries for them. That's my one hangup with them.
I actually have been using the gravity mills for over a year and love them. Have only changed the batteries in the last month.
That salt and pepper mill lost me at 6 batteries. 12 batteries for both. That’s just crazy.
We’ve had the pepper mill for years and love it. Batteries last for long time.
OXO 11 lb kitchen scale for the win. Best $55 I ever spent for my kitchen, use it multiple times a day.
i am very bias when it comes to measuring units...i love to bake and you need to be pretty precise when it comes to baking. i dont think i would use anything like those adjust-a-cups for baking, that is for sure. now that i am older, i have actually started using a scale! alot of americans don't really do that, i would have to say, but once you start you will notice a difference and it's pretty cool :D
I have those salt and pepper shakers for two years now love them!
we bought these awhile back and love them.
I like the adjust-a-cup....that's a buy.
I'm pretty sure it was Pampered Chef because my mom had the same thing!
3:32 love the humor 😂
I use the adjustable cup thing for shortening and peanut butter, butter or honey. Its great because it get all the the product off the sides. I also have the spoon. I use that a lot also.
I think I would like all of them, but what will I do with all the stuff in my junk drawer?
Thanks, James for another awesome video. 👏👏
Looking forward to the one year review with these ones.
That salt and pepper shaker set lost me at 12 fucking batteries
Salt and Pepper mills are cool AF. Just bought 2 on ebay. Readily available in my country, the UK. Love your channel, keep up the great work dude 😊😊❤👍👍
Don’t wash them in the dishwasher.
Sand blasting them would also be very bad.@@HeadRealThin
@@covidsnotrag3973 why would you sand blast them?
@@HeadRealThinWhy would you put them in a dish washer ?
Thank you for this nice review on the Kitchen Gadgets. I like the Salt & Pepper Shaker. I would have to use rechargeable batteries.
the spoon holding the liquid actually surprised me, i have a cheaper but similar thing in one of my kitchen drawers and any liquid you put in it always leaks
6 batteries is kinda crazy. they better last a really long time in there.
i'm from europe so i don't have much use for measuring cups/spoons but maybe one day you can do a kitchen scale test for us 😅
Yeah, an $80 scale that takes up half the kitchen is much better than a little measuring cup that costs $1.
We’ve had the salt and pepper mills for about a year and have no serious complaints!
Sold! I went to Amazon and bought the Auto pepper/salt mills before the video was over. I've been looking for something just like this.
Can you say how long batteries last in this thing?
Of course it depends on how much you use them, but ours last month with moderate use. We also use rechargeable batteries@@hemulek
Shocked! Didn't see a battery lifetime test for the salt & pepper mills. Would've been an easy test 😮
Would it have been that much more expensive to use a small lithium cell for those shakers? 6 AAA batteries per unit is kinda ridiculous.
Yes I agree, but rechargeables are an option. Cool factor over rules anything though, so maybe just break them out for special occasions like a family gathering.
@@covidsnotrag3973 Yeah I meant a lithium rechargeable.
Removeable rechargeable batteries is what I meant. Deffo, throw away batteries are nasty waste, and expensive.@@mercster
It’s cheaper
I got rechargeable grinders and they were half the price of those ones
I have used that measuring spoon before. Over time the numbers come off from sliding the adjuster and it rubbing the black numbers off. It feels so chunky and takes up more space (longer) than my regular stacking measuring spoons.
I bought the adjustable measuring cup when I saw it on Alton Brown's Good Eats show. I use mine for thick ingredients like shortening, honey, sour cream, and the like, and I love it. I bought a push-button pepper mill, but these look and seem to work better than mine.
my grandfather had the adjustable measuring cup in the 90's, was the best for baking
6 Batts per is insane
I hope your lovely Bailey is well ❤️
Oops, I definitely missed this one!! Either I watched it and I've forgotten (which is a distinct possibility) or I didn't catch it when it was released!
I have those salt and pepper grinders. I love them. I've had them for a couple of years and they work great still. I've only had to replace the batteries maybe twice
But the twist is satisfying
Have had a pampered chef “adjust-a-cup”. It works great for viscous materials like peanut butter, Mayo, cream cheese, etc. use it like a plunger to get everything out.
I have the OXO version of the Adjust-A-Cup and I love it.
I have the pepper grinder and have been using it regularly for I think about a year. I love it. Sometimes the blue light bothers me. I don’t think it really helps at all with seeing how much has come out.
I've had those adjustable type measuring cups now for 20 years. Usually one side is for dry ingredients and you turn upside down for the wet
