Fun fact, the American lead supplier broke their machines trying to make the lead do thin. The German supplier decided yes we can make 0.005” lead, but we shall half it. The lead ballon was made from 0.001” lead (1 thousandth of an inch) thick lead. As Adam revealed in a Tested ama video.
One upside of lead though is that it's density means it's very good at keeping in helium. A problem with super light gasses like helium and hydrogen is that their molecules are so tiny they can pass through molecular gaps.

11:20. They were 20 years out with the Montgolfier brothers. It was 1783. I remember this because they flew on what would (179 years later) become my birthday, 21st November.
The way the name of the company was placed prominently during the unboxing, I wonder just what kind of deal they got. Probably got the foil at or even below production cost under the condition that they name drop the company once and unbox the foil on camera.
A wave caused a massive movement of energy, like an explosion, landslide or earthquake, are completely different types of waves than waves caused by the wind and swells. And I wouldn't recommend attempting to surf a tsunami wave.
2:04 That one is kind of a bad example cause the plane was supposed to do that. It was a rubber plane where they were demonstrating how it was crash proof.
That lead foil, it reminds me of organ pipes. Some are wood, like flutes, but I think some are actually lead. These must be strong enough, mind you, the largest ones can be 16 or even 32 feet large. How do they do that? I guess they produce a somewhat thicker foil, roll it to a cylinder or a cone shape and weld the seam. For working with lead, the Mythbusters could have contacted a traditional organ restoration company. Too late, now.
The hands end up in the water acting like brakes. You can actually see it if you look and I suppose that is why it didn't work, but the idea of it alone is apsolutlie insane. As if someone would blow up a bomb just to go surfing.

After covid seeing them touching their faces with their gloves makes me worry. Gloves don't help if you touch yourself with them and lead is really bad for you.
the gloves are likely more for the protection of the lead from the oils, sweat, and such on their hands then their own protection. The amount of exposure from touching the surface of a lead sheet would be far, far below any issue levels unless you were dealing with it day in day out for months
At the end of the day, it's only lead, not arsenic, not curare, just lead. Keen shooters, especially airgun/pellet gun shooters touch huge amounts of lead without dying, or even feeling ill. Millions of people across the world eat animals that have been shot with lead pellets. I grew up in a house with lead pipes for the water supply. It's not that dangerous.

That lead balloon ... I've been looking to watch this as an adult. It may be my favourite episode.
Yeah, much better than the explosive surf wave. That's a very standard explosion for the hell of it.

Yeah, though it's pretty easy to see the video is compiled.
Lead balloon is one of my favorite myths
Same here! This was some neat piece of work.
Sometimes you get paid to learn how to surf. Sometimes you have to ride a bus from Florida to San Francisco. Being a Mythbuster has its ups and downs.
Are you sure they did actually ride it?
It was North-Carolina, not Florida.

Adam told they did it for free. I think it's a good advertisement "no one can do it in America. But this germans show how the things done".
I wish I were that piece of tape right now.
For the wav to be larger, and slower, they need to make it in a shallower body of water. The deeper the water, the smaller the wave.

29:00 wild that Myth Busters script writer doesn't know basic geometry apparently?
If you are in water and the explosion goes up you ain't gonna die, as long as you are on the surf board you are not affected by underwater pressure.

The walls of organ pipes are usually around 4mm thick, thinnest commercial grade is 0.08mm and this is 0.02mm.
