Check out all the Cuban drummers and especially Horacio El Negro Hernandez, Raul Pineda, Jimmy Branley if you want to hear the ultimnate in drum indipendence! Once uou go down the Cuban drum hole you'll never hear drumming the same.
Always inspirational. Gadd brings a combination of technical skills along with the ability to swing and groove. His discography proves the versatility and adaptability he so tastefully brings. Not many like Mr. Gadd!
The art of building a concept slowly. Gadd always takes his time... builds anticipation and then... surprises always happen. :-) Thank you SG for all the years of inspiration. Blessings, C.
You prolly dont give a damn but does anyone know a method to log back into an Instagram account?? I was dumb lost the password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Gavin Edgar I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Excellent anticipation and awesome energy growth, Steve is a true master of building a really musical solo and you can simply whistle the tune he is drumming, which is incredible
Afro-Cuban is the genre and includes several styles eg Mozambique, Mambo, Guaguanco, Nanigo. "Afro-Cuban Ryhthms for Drum Set" by Frankie Malabe gives a great analysis of all these styles. In Steve's "Up Close" video he describes "Late in the Evening" as being based off a Mozambique. Steve tended to create hybrid rhythms for his albums. Somebody mentioned Samba and Steve uses that too. But these are not authentic rhythms in either style and Steve has never claimed that they are. He remains a fantastic influence as one who has adapted and applied these styles to his work in a very personal way. It was an honour to meet him and discuss his work on this occasion.
It's kind of like watching Yo-Yo Ma play the cello. Whether it's from decades of practice, or natural talent, or both, the end result is such a calm control over the instrument that it is both exciting and soothing to watch and listen to.
This should be shown to every beginning drum set player in the world. No blazing chops or break neck tempos needed. Feel, groove, and musicality win the race
Total TASTE, Total Control. Building something from nothing. It's why the smart drummers know about Steve Gadd and seek him out; clinics, concerts, shows. He's the most complete drummer on the planet. No wonder artists and producers alike want him on their records. Latin / Afro-Cuban grooves are the last frontier for grooves within the groove.
I envy you that day. I was able to be up close and personal in a small Tony Williams clinic in Kansas City many years ago. There was maybe 30 of us and really no more room in Explorers Percussion at the time. And that was educational as well.
I think it's his version of the Mozambique. r rl rrlr lrrl rrlr :! . He breaks it down at his PASIC 95 clinic, also on youtube. As he says there "it's always working".
I heard of this man for years but I don't know if I ever heard him actually play sad I know because I am a drummer also but this was very impressive I now know why he's such a respected name in the drumming world he made that sound like a drum orchestra where eyes closed I might think it's more than one guy playing and he made it look easy
The drummers in the audience are having a moment because they realize they are not as creative as Steve Gadd, lol.Gadd comes from a generation of drummers who were, and still are, much more musical than today.Today is just about complexity of chops and technique for the most part.Steve Gadd made his chops into hit recordings that reached many more people.Think and listen to Gadd's drum parts on "Fifty Ways to Leave your Lover",and "Aja" as an example.Tell me what drummer under 40 is known for their drum parts the same.Don't blame it on the industry, blame it on the collective output of today's artists, vocals included.
Wow! Once of the best 4 minutes of SG I have ever seen!! All the comments have covered my sentiments already, what a groove! My only question is what phone did you use because the audio and video is really quite excellent. Thanks!
I was very fortunate to be able to sit this close to Steve during his clinic. My recording device was a Nikon D7200 camera which has a built in stereo mic and manually adjusted volume control. Steve was very approachable and clearly enjoyed passing on his knowledge. A true master.
@@barryyoungdrums Thanks, Barry! That explains the superior sound and video quality. How lucky you were to be so close to him and how lucky we were to benefit from it! Cheers!
The most musical drummer in history.
Groove has amazing feel.
Steve is one of the best.
Close your eyes, sounds like multiple people playing at the same time.
Check out Enilda Rasua.
He takes it to another level.
Sounds like 1 person playing to me.
Check out all the Cuban drummers and especially Horacio El Negro Hernandez, Raul Pineda, Jimmy Branley if you want to hear the ultimnate in drum indipendence! Once uou go down the Cuban drum hole you'll never hear drumming the same.

Man, I love Gadd’s playing. It’s so smooth with distinct sound and feel. He makes everything look easy, like the virtuoso he is.
He has a amazing groove! I am a 10 years old drummer and i hope to play as him one day🥁🥁🎵🎶
Awesome. Go hard, that's great to hear!!! Keep practicing and growing 🙏
Everybody sees it, his playing is just so modest and understated, it's almost deceiving when you watch him play.
He is so good! One of my all time favorite drummers!
I don't understand how anybody can stay seated while listening to this ❤
Seriously, I’m dancing in my bed horizontally
Such a gold mine of groove and musicianship , I can hear the song so clearly when ever Steve graces us with his genius Thanks so much for posting

@Gavin Edgar it worked and I actually got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my account!
@Edward Bronson happy to help :D
That’s real playing! Feeling the groove and not rigid with time but manipulating it. Could listen to him all day 😀👌
One of few men that can play an extremely musical piece with only drums!
Excellent anticipation and awesome energy growth, Steve is a true master of building a really musical solo and you can simply whistle the tune he is drumming, which is incredible
Genius
True ambidexterity.
Amazing.
Simon Phillips has that.
Steve Gadd definitely has it.
And groove for days.
He's like so able to evolve an audience with his wisdom in few bars. What a fantastic human!
The master. We love you Steve. Keep on rocking.
I love how musical and melodic his accents can be. Legend.

i was listening for the 3
thanks for sharing this information brother
The late great Canadian drummer Chuck Silvermans books on kit Afro Cuban drumming are brilliant.Got me playing the Rhythms on the kit
These are "white afro-latin" rhythms...
Thanks for the Frankie Malabe book plug, going to order one right now 👍
Most relaxed stick grip ever. It’s like they stay in his hands by pure magic alone.
So funky and greasy - not sterile and mechanical like so many drummers in 2019 - catch the magic in that feel!
one more word: groovy
Thank You dear friends for sharing this wonderful performance of a great drummer! Wonderful work👏👏
Good one Barry.👍🥁Steve just gets so 'into' what he's playing.
He plays so loose but perfectly in time - Just so great!
This is what a master drummer/musician playing sounds like when your sitting in the same room. Real…. Feel…. And, beautiful music. Thanks Steve.
Thank you Steve for your music !
incredible drummer :) Truly one of the great masters

I don't know how you could just sit and listen... I would have been dancing in the aisle :)
Amazing he's 74 yo here and still travelling the world playing drums
I never get tired of Mr. Gadd's playing. One of my top very few.
In the presence of greatness
That was exquisite. Bravo!
👏
he is has such control at this relatively slow tempo -> your watching a master
Oh m’y Gadd!
This is amazing.
No one who can play like him. It's just perfect.

I was there that day at first row, amazing time with Steve Gadd ! :-)
I envy you that day.

Holy cow! The title said demo, I didn’t know it was gonna be an amazing Gadd solo! This is awesome!
trademark Gadd 💖unique and unmistakable.
Take it easy, is everything under control
Steve Gadd is to the drums what Jeff Beck is to the guitar: FLAWLESS
WHAT IS THE STICKING IN 2:08??? I can't figure it out!
I think it's his version of the Mozambique. r rl rrlr lrrl rrlr :! .
He breaks it down at his PASIC 95 clinic, also on youtube. As he says there "it's always working".
That's why he is Gadd almighty.
So damn good.
That was some sweet jammz!!!!
gadd is the one. he makes it like you dont need the band here. drums are enough.
This man’s Vic Firthmodel permeates my childhood and my favs to this day!
He is a master of his craft. A metronome in human form.

♥magnifico Steve
Brilliant.
Living lengend....
He's the best..!!
He was a master and an incredible musician but his better days are now behind him.
The master. Drummers will be studying his groves for decades.... at least.
At the very least!!!!!!
Dude is badass and sounds great
The groove king!
He´s playing music not just beatinng the drums.
He's obviously doing both
@@petarpavasovic6333 all wrong. he's playing fortnite
Musical drumming at its highest.
El Bravo...Delux
God dammit, Steve Gadd is the absolute greatest of all time.
やっぱスティーブガッドが最高だっ!😍😍😍
撮影者、ブレてる場合じゃないよ笑
Brilliant
Great rhythm demo of a super drummer and there is no one shaking his feet, are u kidding me 🤨
And the kids watching are like, "He's not playing fast enough!"
He grooves and the audience sleeps!

Bravissimo
Side note: Steve Gadd did the drum part in Steely Dan’s “Aja” in one take!

First Clave After Bell🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🧐
I love so
Mozambique feel into medium Samba
As a kid I bought a 2lp live Ginger Baker Air Force album and that had tribal drumming all over it. Bit different from his Cream tenure ....
Just the vocabulary. Speaks volumes without stuttering.
The groove master!
He understand and playing 4 way coordination independence.
🔥🔥🔥
Wow wow wow cant say any more than WOW
Classic
Gadd's so good, he knows 50 ways to leave your lover ;-)
The man just comes up with the coolest ostinatos, I'm sorry, you can't look away even for a moment.
GOAT.
I wonder why for demos like this, they don't give him a set with quiet heads and quiet cymbals so he can talk and explain things while he plays.
Sooo smooooth
Steve Is Steve.
let's not forget that he's probably the best dancer in the room also
