Yay! Thanks for sharing! I'm definitely going to check some of these out :) especially Hearts Blood because it's been on my good reads TBR for ages! Haha
The Lunar Chronicles!!! Amazing. That Sun Moon book the Bear and the girl... when I was little there was a movie I really like called the Polar Bear prince which I think that is bases off of. Loved it! Love fairy tale retellings!
I am in the middle of reading Wildwood Dancing right now. So far, yes, perfect thing to pick up right now. Daughter of the Forest is the Six Swans which is a brothers Grim version of the Wild Swans. Both original and Daughter of the forest is one of my FAVORITES!!!!!
I finally started reading The Lunar Chronicles this month and omg i love it so much!! Great recommendations Casey, there's definitely loads I want to check out :)
OMG! I am so excited that you've made this video because I've been waiting for some more of your retelling recommendations. Out of all the books you've mentioned I've only read Beastly. Juliet Marillier is a must read author for me this year; I really need to get to her soon!
Super helpful! I love fairy tale retellings, the lunar chronicles got me hooked! I've heard a lot about the Juliette Marillier books but haven't tried one yet.
OMG I love The Goose Girl! I read it soooo long ago :O You just reminded me about it ahah! I'll need to check if it's still at my parents' place so I can reread it! Yay for Cinder :p
I LOVE FAIRY TALES!!!!! (Just had to get that fangirl moment out.) Godmother looks super interesting. I'd love to see it from the Godmother's POV, even if it is dark. Sometimes I like dark/weird. I read Beastly FOREVER ago. I mean, it might have been jr. high or high school. It's been forever. But I remember I liked it! Okay, I need Wildwood Dancing too because you don't see the 12 Dancing Princesses much and I love that story and it needs more attention. I feel like I've heard that story for Daughter of the Forest but I can't remember!!!!!! Now I need to go through my book of Grimm's fairy tales and research. I feel like I read it in there... And Cinder - obviously. Have you read Stars Above yet?????? It made my heart so happy.
Great video! I read Beastly so so so so long ago, that I don't even really remember the events in the story, like I remember the characters, the setting, the major events, and the ending. I liked it; I think I hesitated on reading the book because I watched the movie, and wasn't very impressed. I also listened to Cinder on audiobook, but I want to actually read the words because I think it will be much more fun and exciting that way. Oooooh! Ooh! *Mermaid* is a retelling of *The Beauty and the Beast*, DUH!!! The title gives it away!!! XD Thanks for the enjoyable video! When I started watching, I was wondering, "Is she gonna mention The Lunar Chronicles? I bet she is."
Yes! The Lunar Chronicles is amazing!! You should definitely continue. It just keeps getting better! hahaha yeah, Mermaid is a beauty and the beast retelling. LOL.
Daughter of the Forest sounds like it's based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale "Wild Swans" where there's a girl with 11 brothers and there's a spell on them and they all turn into swans.
Yes, Ella Enchanted is amazing! I need to read the Goose Girl!! It's been on my TBR since I started booktube but I haven't read it yet! Daughter of the Forest sounds so good (because swans makes me think of the swan princess even through the story sounds completely different). Actually I want to read all of that author's books! I'm so glad you did this video because it makes me want to get into fairy tales again :)
Love your recommendations! Based on the description you gave for Daughter of the Forest, I am guessing that it is based after a Hans Christian Anderson Fairy tale called The Wild Swans. It tells the story of a princess named Eliza who's twelve brother are turned into swans because of a curse cast upon them by their wicked step mother and it's up to Eliza to break the curse by taking a vow of silence whilst weaving together twelve sweaters made of stinging nettles. If that sounds familiar you probably have a match!
I came here through Samantha from Novels and Nonsense and i am loving what i saw! I have never read any retellings as publishers don't translate them and publish them here. So, before i started on booktube i didn't knew this genre existed but i want to start reading it. The Lunar Chronicles are on my wishlist.
Aww thank you so much! Samantha was so sweet to shout me out. :) The Lunar Chronicles series is great! I hope you're able to check them out! I love them!
Ella Enchanted and Levine's other books were my childhood!!! Great video! I haven't read or heard of many of the books you've mentioned which is weird because I also LOVE fairytale retellings!
Yeah, whenever I hear about a retelling that I'm not familiar with, I'm always surprised because I love them so much, but there are SO MANY out there!!
Awww I loved Beastly! I actually really enjoyed the movie too, I feel like it was one of those movies that kind of got swept under the rug. Also! You should definitely read Bound! It's a Cinderella retelling set in ancient China and it's by Donna Jo Napoli. It is seriously SO GOOD. The best Cinderella retelling I've read so far, even though I do love Cinder.
Oooh Mermaid sounds really good! Adding it to my TBR :) I loved Goose Girl! I just read that a couple weeks ago and it was really good. I really want to try Beastly. I read Cloaked by Alex Flinn and didn't really like it, but I need to try another book from her. You had so many great suggestions, loved this video :)
I love ella so much, it is so cute and gives me warm fuzzies! Godmother sounds like so unique! I really want to check it out! "Mermaid under the water" xD oh my word haha There are so many new books I need to add to my TBR!! Thanks so much for the recommendations! I need all of these haha
Your hair is adorable! I usually "listen" to videos while I am washing dishes or something and I had not noticed before this! Great video! I think the only ones that I have read that you mentioned in this video are the Lunar Chronicles. I definitely want to read Ella Enchanted though. I love the movie! You did not mention any by Robin McKinley. I have a couple of her books on my TBR. Which ones of hers have you read? Are there any that you recommend.
Godmother sounds cool! ❤️BEASTLY❤️ YESYESYES! Going to check out Hearts Blood Surprise surprise Lunar Chronicles 🌚 This is wonderful, going to rewatch and write down all these books! Yes part 2:)
I haven't read one of these.. not even Cinder.. I KNOW, I know. But so far I have just not felt like it. I'm not really into Fairytale retellings anyway, I don't even know why. I liked the ones I read but for some reason I'm not drawn to them as much. But some of these sounded really interesting!
That's totally understandable that you aren't drawn to them. They aren't everyone's thing. I think you should give Cinder a try though if you ever get the chance. I think it can be enjoyed by anyone, even if you aren't really into retellings. It's much more than just a simple retelling. The characters are wonderful!
ABasketCaseyReads yeeeah, I know :D and I have never heard anybody say a bad thing about this book. I really don't know why it doesn't seem as interesting to me, normally I want to pick up every single hyped YA book :D but I'm pretty sure it's gonna happen one day. Definitely has more appeal for me now because it's finished!
You need to check out East by Edith Pattou. It's a East of the Sun, West of the Moon retellings and it's one of my favorites. It's amazing. Also, The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C Wrede. It's not a retelling of any one fairytale but there are dozens of references and retellings in it. And the Daughter of the Forest is a retelling of the Six Swans which is a Grimm fairytale. Also, another one of my favorites is The Princess Tales by Levine. They're so funny. And The Perilous Guard by Elizabeth Marie Pope is a Tam Lin retelling that I absolutely loved when I read it. Also, if you like picture books I recommend you checking out (from your library) the illustrator K Y Craft. She's has an amazing 12 Dancing Princesses book and many others. Her King Midas is one of my favorites. She's actually the illustrator of Wildwood Dancing. (Cover art) Another amazing illustrator is Trina Sthart Hyman. All her illustrations are amazing. But her Sleeping Beauty is my particular favorite.
Now I know that you have Itty Bittys on your shelf LOL. My fiancee got me one for Valentine's Day. I am halfway through Scarlet and no worries Cinder's movie rights have been sold. To whom...Ms. Meyer is keeping that on the down low.
I heard "Cinderella from the godmother's perspective" and went "Oh dear," cuz one of my W.I.P.s is a similar concept. But from what you've said, there do seem to be key differences. I'll have to check it out.
Yay! Thanks for sharing! I'm definitely going to check some of these out :) especially Hearts Blood because it's been on my good reads TBR for ages! Haha
Great! I'm so glad you're going to check some of them out! :) Hearts Blood is great!

Yes, gotta love Lunar!! Aww, I've never heard of that movie but it sounds cute! :)
it's suuuper old though and really cheesey I have never seen it on DVD just VHS I think but yeah it was even kinda old when I saw it
+Coffee&Chapters Aww I used to watch The Polar Bear King when I was little too. Fairy tales rule!
Yes some one knows what I'm talking about! Yes I love fairy tales!
YAY! I can't wait to hear your thoughts! And thanks for clearing that up for me. I knew it had the word Swan in the title.
Yesssss I've wanted to read more fairytale retellings! Thank youuu for all the recommendations!
Yay! I'm so glad this video helped give you more recommendations! I hope you love these if you read them.
I feel sad that I have not subscribed to you sooner.
I love your passion and loved these recommendations so many that I need to place on my TBR!!!
Aww! Thank you so much! That's so sweet of you! I'm glad you liked the recs. I hope you're able to check some of them out soon!

Yay for Cinder :p
I’m a Beauty and the Beast junkie. Love the retellings by K.M. Shea but always looking for more. Thank you.
Have you read Uprooted yet? It's such a wonderful retelling and my absolute favorite book!!!! The way Naomi Novik writes is incredible.
I LOVE FAIRY TALES!!!!! (Just had to get that fangirl moment out.)
Godmother looks super interesting. I'd love to see it from the Godmother's POV, even if it is dark. Sometimes I like dark/weird.

I squealed when I saw you did a video on this for obvious reasons

Yeah, whenever I hear about a retelling that I'm not familiar with, I'm always surprised because I love them so much, but there are SO MANY out there!!
Daughter of the Forest is based on a tale called the Seven Swans, which I highly recommend, if you can find it. I think it might be a Grimm story?
Awww I loved Beastly! I actually really enjoyed the movie too, I feel like it was one of those movies that kind of got swept under the rug. Also! You should definitely read Bound! Love all your figurines! Are you a fan of modern fairy tales as well?
I love fairy tale retelling a too. East of the Sun, West of the Moon is one of my favorites. As an aside? Are you reading notes? How do you do that?

Robin is wonderful! I've never read that though. I'll definitely check it out!
