5 Things You DON'T Want to Do When Eating SUSHI in Japan
• 5 Things You DON'T Wan...
Sushi has a long history in Japan and because of it, there are actually many rules on how to eat them properly. I personally think that you don’t have to follow everything perfectly, but there is one thing that I most certainly recommend you to avoid to simply enjoy the taste of sushi more.
It is… “Putting soy sauce on the rice.” Why?
1. You could accidentally put too much soy sauce
2. The rice will fall apart
3. Some rice might fall into the soy sauce plate and it will look dirty
Putting too much soy sauce on will change the original taste of the sushi. Just a little bit on the tip of the topping is usually recommended. The best way to do so is to first tilt the sushi sideways and then pick it up.
By the way, there are some sushi called 軍艦 Gunkan that has 海苔 nori seaweed wrapped around it. But these kinds are impossible to tilt because the toppings will fall off. In this case, you should use the がり Gari sliced vinegared ginger that always comes together with sushi as a brush to apply soy sauce on the top.
By the way, Gari are originally meant for refreshing your mouth in between eating different kinds of sushi.

I find it important to understand that food is always changing, and that tradition isn't always important. Until the 1500s, tomatoes did not exist at all in Italian cuisine. The word 'sushi' actually refers the the rice, which was originally only used to preserve the fish, and was discarded rather than eaten. And salmon wasn't used in sushi until the 1980s, when Norway, yes, Norway, pushed salmon sushi in order to boost exports.

Wa's somebody looking over your shoulder Making sure you weren't f****** up.Cause that doesn't sound like an enjoyable eating experience to me
The pickled ginger is primarily meant as a palate cleanser to be eaten between different kinds of sushi (basically to 'reset' your taste buds), he is just giving a tip how to apply soy sauce to the gunkan in an elegant way. If you're not getting high end sushi where the chef prepares it in front of you, you can just eat it as you like IMHO. Otherwise it's really very disrespectful or at least it's just a pity if you drown out the more delicate and complex flavors with too much soy sauce. But if you like it that way, you do you.
If someone complains about me not respecting the sushi because I put on too much soy sauce I usually pull an uno reverse card on them by saying that they're disrespecting the soy sauce maker by putting on too little.
you can eat the ginger with the sushi as well
@@tropingreenhorn Pickled Ginger on sushi is amazing I dont get why they only use it as a "Pallette Cleanser"
@@OriginalGamerPr0some ppl like me have sensitive or different palate and ginger have a rather strong flavor so it tend to overpower the taste of meat and the sushi as a whole. I mean u do u but i personally don't enjoy it as much due to too strong taste of it.
@@OriginalGamerPr0
It’s a palette cleanser because it has a pretty strong, yet pleasant flavor that helps to eliminate other flavors in your mouth and replace them with the ginger flavor. It works well when you’re trying many different kinds of Sushi and you don’t want the flavors to mesh together.
I drench my sushi in soy sauce before eating it, it's just a must😂
I love the footage of the sooshi being tilted
Its just a lil "bloop"
Wow, thanks! That was actually really helpful!

I Actually can't stand ginger, I don't care if it cleans his palet.I just don't like the taste and texture I never touch it and if I was offered it I'd be like no thank you give me my next piece of sushi
This is really cool and interesting, thank you!
Ohhhhhh, so that's why I always get loose rice grains all over my soy sauce plate 🤣
Thanks for letting us know!
Best sushi eating tips I got in my entire life 😭😭❤️
Personally, I think regular soy sauce is too salty even to dab on lightly. I really like the taste and mouth feel of the raw fish, especially tuna and salmon. They don't need anything extra
I use the chopstick to dip into the soy sauce, to get some of that salt in
I agree. I like sushi for the delicate balance of flavors, and soy sauce is very overpowering. If I use it, it's all I can taste. I do like soy sauce and I use it frequently when cooking, but never for sushi.
I feel the same about wasabi, too overpowering.
I'm in the pursuit to getting the perfect soy sauce.. idk how they did it but East Asians coming up with soy sauce is a bomb condiment!
Hear hear!
Same but my reason is just that I dont like soy sauce at all
This is amazing. Thank you so much!
This has been blown out of proportion for Americans, the vast majority of Japanese people (in my experience) could care less about how you eat sushi as long as you're not throwing it across the restaurant.
Could they care less or not?
@@drmprod no cos they already dont care probably
I watch NHK world all the time and they show people dipping their sushi in soy sauce all the time.
"could care less" 🤣😂
Yeah. This kind of things, while nice as "Did you know that.." conversation, should really have a disclaimer that says "No one actually gives a cent about any of these rules". In this particular case, this is only ever going to matter if the person is in a super, extremely high end restaurant with really, really important people, like, the CEO of Sony, as an example, and thus they need to behave in their best because thy are about to seal a deal or something. For 99.9% of people, it wont ever matter to them nor anyone around them.
I learned so many new things in less than a minute. Thanks for making this short!
This has made me reassess my whole life.
Sushi is the best thing. It makes me so happy. Every time. Just thinking about it now I smile.
Meanwhile there’s me with my gallon of eel sauce

Sushi in the art of eating it and enjoying it is truly an art.
Pfft last night I was thinking this question and today I saw this, Thank you
This is really great and I will use this next time I eat sushi, the brushing looks quite elegant!
Personally, I like to eat sushi without adding soy sauce, I like to taste the original flavors but if I really think it needs it, I put just a dash on it.
These are very smart tips. Thank you!
I gotta have a little puddle of soy sauce mixed with a ton of wasabi. I love the spice. I remember eating at Sugar fish for my brothers birthday and the chef refused to give us any (respectfully he explained why) and honesty the sushi was amazing and didn’t need it. I think it depends on the quality !
If you like the spicy kick of a lot of wasabi, you can insert some between the fish and rice with your chopsticks in a little sushi surgery, and then dip in unmixed soy sauce. Both flavors will pop more and with more clarity! Watch out for your sinuses though!
i’ve just been eating the ginger slices thats rlly helpful

Huh, cool...

You're blowing my mind with this right now
The ginger is meantto be a brush? I always eat that!
I was told a long time ago that it was meant to cleanse your pallet between eating different types of fish. So, like you just ate some tuna, you eat a sliver of the ginger so you can eat the salmon.
@@sagedill5993 That answers my question!
I don't like leaving food on a plate so knowing it's a cleanser is a relief. Also do they do this with other food, or just ginger?
Because I love the idea of a pallet cleanser, since sometimes certain food tastes overpower the others and ruins the experience.
@@WakoDoodle I agree, more food should include pallet cleansers! Never heard of it being done besides with sushi though

Thank you! I always like to prepare each piece before I start to eat any of it. But you’re right about the rice holding too much soy sauce and the sushi getting overpowered.

Thank you so much! I never knew what the ginger was for!

That ginger soy sauce brush blew my mind
Thank you ❣️
Wow! I had no idea. There’s an Asian restaurant where I live that has a Japanese aesthetic (literally, the name is called Sakura), although the cuisine is more general Asian fare. However, they offer sushi and rolls.
My family usually gets one called the Volcano Roll, which has fried crabmeat and avocado, topped with spicy tuna, and wrapped in some sort of crunch (tempura, I believe, but it could also be panko). On the side of the platter is some wasabi and fresh ginger.
We always have a problem with dipping the pieces into soy sauce or pouring it on, because it falls apart. But now that I know that you can use the ginger to brush the soy sauce on, I’ll make sure to do that next time we go there!
Thanks, Shogo-senpai!
