Lessons learned and other musings ... 🔶This was my response to a #walkingstick challenge put forth by Rob of th-cam.com/video/dTTRGgH9xEI/w-d-xo.html ... not quite big enough (overall length is 18 inches or 45cm) for me or my wife to use ... but would work well with an 18 inch doll ... not sure if she will offer it on her Etsy store ... shameless plug: www.etsy.com/shop/DollyAttire 🔶I had a lot of fun making it ... and really am proud too ... I'm 3D challenged if you haven't realized by now ... I cheated by drawing one in Autocad ... took me many tries over the months but this time it worked ... It ended up being exactly what I designed ... so many possibilities beyond Xmas ornaments but I will be doing those too 🔶Mistake: with the In/Out ... I should have faced off the ends to make the alignment best possible ... you can see the problem on the inside bottom joint which I evened up w/ a Dremel ... I had planned to lop off the top to leave only 4 arms(?) pointing skyward but chickened out on my original intent ... maybe finishing the insides would have been better but I wasn't sure of the finish 🔶You may not be able to see the off-center results ... the bottom 3 shaft segments are off-center turned ... about 1/16" (1mm) or so ... I was able to reposition each one as needed easily enough ... predictably, there was chatter in the middle ... I need some sort of steady rest ... $$$ ... the chatter did have a nice pattern I wish I could have used but it got sanded away 🔶The koa is bare wood with no finish ... just sanded to 320 and burnished with a popsicle stick (ice lollies?) ... the rings on the staff were waxed with Art Deco Metallic Gold wax ... apparently I like that stuff ... and each band has a friction burn from the same popsicle stick ... unfortunately the masking tape used for the gold wax left some discoloration and reburnishing left some tool marks ... but all is good since this was a proof of concept - perfection was not as important as usual ... there were a few other blemishes too 🔶Tail stock tip on spindles ... when I put enough force to get the live center to spin is tends to bend the spindle making any chatter worse so I eased off but then then it squeaked ... I used a bit of wax on the tip just like the way we used an older-fashioned dead cup center 🔶Not sure I'd do one from a solid block again ... a PITA to cut and some flaws at the matching joints ... one more glue up sounds OK in retrospect. 🔶The finish on the handle was just the clear shellac slightly buffed by hand with a green pad ... Gaak, I'm so lazy sometimes 🔶The is a tick-tock clock coming through on the audio ... sorry 'bout that ... I guess the camera's mic is better than I thought ... I need an electric shop clock ... or a fancier mic 🔶As usual, leave a comment if the video quality has some areas you don't care for or are annoying or you would want ... things like out of focus; volume is not consistent; screechy or annoying sounds; no music; jarring transitions; jumpy storyboard; too wordy; not enough talking ... please, it can only help us all, especially you viewers 💛❤💗💜 A big *Thank You* to all my subscribers and to everyone who watched. 🙏Please, stay safe. -Mike
Superbly thought out and made Mike , it looks not unlike the mace or ceremonial one like we have in our parliament and yes I believe it would make a very unique looking walking stick and there are possiblities of putting something inside the "mace " head or even filling with a resin . Brilliant job mate and perfectly executed 👌 Cheers, Bram
I've been watching inside out wood turning and those projects amazes me including yours. For me it looks like a scepter especially if you put a jewel on the top 💖
I was always amazed too and didn't think I'd ever figure it out - did you see the drawing I used to set it up ? Funny about the jewel part ... the first idea I had a long while back was to make an I/O with a crystal inside for a New Age friend I have. Well now I can do it. If I can find a decent sized crystal. Thanks for watching and the comment Jojo 🙏 Take care. -Mike
Hi Mike... I really liked this one... I know that it's not long enough to use but the concept stands... I must have a go at that inside out turning... Great video as always... Take care...All the best.....Andy
Thanks for the nice words Andy ! Yes, inside out has so many possibilities and really is not too difficult - give it a go ! Thanks again🙏 Take care. -Mike
hello friends greetings healthy and successful always. Thank you for sharing knowledge and always faithfully watching your latest stuff.ilike mpart good idea
Woohoo! Mike and in-side-out project 😀 Well done Brother. No matter there were some mistakes. The most important is to start it and finish it 💪 Offcentered work was good too. Your walking stick is to short for walking but would be great helper to get up from the throne 😁 Have a great day my friend 👍 Rav P.S. I was surprised with Your couragges entry 👌😀
I am go glad you gave me a "Woohoo!" Rav - it feels so good my friend. So good !!! No actual planning or design mistakes, just execution ones so that is a win for me (it's not a bowl that I *must* do perfectly. hehe). I wanted to do inside-outs for so long but I could never understand when everyone says "Be careful with XXX" or "Watch out for YYY" - I just can't 'see' what is important. Now I do !! It finally came together. Woohoo! What was courageous was not trying to repurpose one of my wife's plant stands made of pine branches which would've been perfect. Or trying to turn a 3 or 4 piece stick 'cause I couldn't see a good way to fasten them all together. So I built a doll sized one. The off center idea came to me as a way to simulate a bent or imperfect branch of a real walking stick - it was easy enough. 2 new tools would help next time - a small steady rest and a better way to hold the off center end - my live centers have such a big point it sort of messes up the re-positioning as needed. Oh well. BTW, I wanted to use my Xmas gift skew but it arrived as dull as a butter knife. It looks like a fun tool to use. Thanks again Brother💪💪 🙏Take care. -Mike p.s. My wife has been taking lately about an aid to help her stand up (old knees. ugh). Nearby towel bars help me to get off the 'throne'😋🤤🤣😂
Thanks Leo, I think so too - all went to plan !! And your remark about the Intro goes a long way - I'm finding the vids are 10x harder than the turning so words help immensely !! Thanks again🙏 Take care. -Mike
Very nice! I was wondering why you were doing the off center turning, but when I saw the finished product it all came together! I’m sure your wife will have no problem selling that!
Thank you bunches Drew ! Sounds like I got the storyboard to work. Finally ! (the coming together towards the end part. hehe.) Did I do the Koa justice ? Thanks again🙏 Take care. -Mike
Hi Mike, That is fantastic. Superb job on hand cutting the inside out handle. Love it Mike. Take care my friend and a Happy New Year to you and your family. Cheers, Huw
Thanks so much Huw, much appreciated ! A good, sharp saw really helps; made me look good ! Here's wishing a pleasant 2022 to you and yours ! Take care yourself. -Mike
Thank you so much friend, glad you like it ! My idea for the head has been in my head for a long time - I was thinking of a Stargate Jaffa energy staff when I started 🤓 Take care bro🤜🤛 -Mike
Thanks John, glad you like it ! Not super hard just ordinary hard. I did have fun with the inside out piece - it actually came out like I envisioned 😁 Take care. -Mike
Yah, my daughter 'donated' that pink pencil ... we gave it to her many years ago when she was in grade school. I like having something from her to have her near in my shop. These days we give her furniture and stuff - she won't settle for a pencil anymore. Lol !!

Nice work Mike, Good job with the inside out piece. The Koa sounded very hard. All turned out great in the end, take care my friend, John
Thanks John, glad you like it ! Not super hard just ordinary hard. I did have fun with the inside out piece - it actually came out like I envisioned 😁 Take care. -Mike
Ok aside from the wood that you turn it into a beautiful walking stick... I just find it cute on your pink pencil 📝 😉
Yah, my daughter 'donated' that pink pencil ... we gave it to her many years ago when she was in grade school. I like having something from her to have her near in my shop. These days we give her furniture and stuff - she won't settle for a pencil anymore. Lol !!
