  • For the 2023 Wem Vehicles Of Interest classic car show we aimed our Standard 8's stubby nose in the direction of Shropshire - with the MX5 keeping a watching brief from behind - and crossed our fingers for good weather.
The Vehicles Of Interest gathering takes place on the recreation field close to the centre of Wem. As the title suggests, this isn't just a classic car show but rather a show where anything transport-related that is unusual or different in some way is welcome, so this year classic cars rubbed wing mirrors with aged tractors, a number of heavy commercial vehicles, motorcycles and a helicopter.
Mid-way through the day, many of the vehicles then form up to take part in a parade through the town. In readiness for this we headed off to the high street and captured the cars, motorcycles and tractors that took part.
Like the Audlem event, there's a very friendly feel to Vehicles Of Interest and we try and get to it every year whenever possible (in 2022 we took the Anglia).
I'll include a link to the previous year's video at the end of this one. Your comments etc welcomed as always. Did you take part? At least one other OCCer (a member of the site's forum) was in attendance so it was good to put another face to a name. Do you have a favourite from the cars featured?
We get to quite a few classic car shows throughout the year, please see the rest of the channel if you're new here and consider subscribing as there are many more videos like this scheduled to appear on the Old Classic Car channel.
If you've subscribed in the past, please double-check that you're still subscribed as I've been notified that some subscribers are being un-subscribed by TH-cam for some reason or other.

My three take home vehicles are 1, that lush maroon Mercedes convertible , what a stunner, 2, the gorgeous Daimler special sport convertible and 3 the silver Standard Phase 1 such character.
Perhaps I'll pinch one of the bubble cars as well, just for pottering around my country estate 😊 i wish.
Another enjoyable video Richard thank you 👍

The Phase 1 Vanguard, MG YB saloon, Austin Healey 3000 and that gorgeous Riley 9 Monaco were my favourites. Your Standard looked very smart despite you thinking it needed a wash.

You are correct about Watsonian, although they have moved from Albion Street in Greet to Unit 72, Northwick Business Centre,

That was fantastic ! Something for everyone there, and such good weather too - perfect day out. My take home would be either the Daimler Consort, or the Standard Vanguard - my favourite era of motoring. Thanks for this Rick - yet another masterpiece, and YES, a video on Registration Numbers would be great. Take care 🙂

Always look forward to a show walk around. It's such a shame that a threat of a TH-cam copyright strike is always there. My wife and I are known to shout at the TV 'what a bobby dazzler that is' at the appropriate time.
    Keep them coming.

My Grandad was transport manager for a company in Manchester and I remember him telling me that the early Consul Classics and Consul Capris were a nightmare because of rusting doors and sagging doors The sagging doors were due to their length putting excess strain on the hinges.

Hello OCC. As someone born in 1942, the son of a father who literally had a succession of pre-war bangers necessary for his work - some lasting a whole day before being replaced, I remember what happened in 1948, and again in 1953. Motor cars suddenly started to look different. The Morris Minor and it's bigger sister the Oxford stood out from the crowd yet to catch up. And also, along came the Standard Vanguard, even the name spelled the future. Then came 1953, and those who had stumbled along with slightly updated pre-war models such as Ford and Vauxhall, suddenly brought us Americana. Ford with their Consul, Zephyr, and Zodiac, Vauxhall with their Wyvern, Velox, and Cresta. Were these not the absolute envy of most working class 'banger drivers' to whom a 1938 car was considered nearly new, enter the French in 1955 with the outrageous Citroen DS 19. To the car expert little boy I was, getting the Dinky toy versions of these cars was always my Christmas Day dream. Now, if I might backtrack to the Standard Vanguard, which if I'm correct, could be seen as the most important car of the time. The Vanguard proposal was intended to have an engine with unusually high HP (horse power), on which - at that time, Road Tax was based. The then owner of Standard Cars - Lord Black I believe, lobbied the Government to change the Road Tax from the HP based tariff to a 'flat rate' for all passenger cars. It thus remained so for 50+ years until CO2 emissions became the new rateable value. As a boy, the first time I saw a Standard Vanguard on the road, it wasn't exactly on the road. All four wheels were in mid air as it appeared at speed over the crest of a 'humped back' railway bridge. I'd probably be about seven years of age, and it was an exciting and vey memorable sight. None of my Dad's cars could have gone that fast. Now a pure guess on my part regarding the Vanguard engine, maybe it was the first 'over-square' engine in an ordinary road car. There had to be something different about that engine. I should have recalled that 1948 also gave us the Jaguar XK120.

Hi 👋 Terrific car display. The old Vanguard is beautiful. I remember in my childhood in the 1960s , our family out on a Sunday afternoon drive, and there would be an old Vanguard driven by an elderly person just putting along slowly. And it was holding up the traffic and people would be overtaking it to get by. And my father would say it's one of those bloody Vanguards. I thought they were funny looking. There weren't too many of them on the roads back then. I remember in the 1970s going to a car demolition derby at a stockcar track and seeing a Vanguard being smashed up. That Volkswzgon van is cool, i like them. Your Standard 8 looks fine. I like the fog lamps on it . The Ford Consul Capris are neat and sporty. I think i mentioned to Harley in his video , about the BMW Isettas and how tiny they are. And how i would be nervous being in one worried that a large truck might run it over. I like the Fiat 126 , here in NZ we only assembled the 127 model which was similar. Do you know about the Ford Pilot cars ? , I thought they were American , but they are British. They were very large cars with big headlights. I don't think you and Harley have come across one there at a show. Morris Minor vans were popular delivery vechiles back in the 1960s here. That old Daimler is stunning. I hate to think that it could be involved in a car accident and be destroyed. Well excellent car show. Thanks.

Good Video RJ and it is a good thing I didn't have any early plans this morning. I know I am getting old when I see a VW Polo "Bread Van" in a classic car event the same as the one I bought NEW for my then partner when they first were launched. It was stolen never to be seen again about 1 year after I bought it and for the life of me as long as I live I will never understand why anyone would want to steal a red VW Polo with red wheel trims. I do like the "Drive In /Drive Out" sections of both yours and HJ's videos it is always nice to see these cars in motion. I love the Trojans and the blue Capri seems to have had the same problem I had years ago when I had a Consul Classic and that is rotting out around the side lights, that one looks as if they have been repaired. A nice Mini Cooper there for sale would make a good first car for a certain Youthful Assistant when the time comes which isn't to far away, just thinking aloud. One has to forward plan😄.

    • @oldclassiccarUK
      @oldclassiccarUK  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yes I like to catch some of the arrivals and/or departures for variety rather than just seeing them parked up. I'm not sure that a Mini Cooper will be his first car if I'm honest, at least not a proper old one :-)

Great idea, definitely do a video on U.K.car registrations. The history since 1903
My father was a collector of numbers, wrote them into a book when the new ones were issued.
I have these books and they are a rare record of number issues across the country form 1903 when it all started
Your standard UWD Warwickshire number, I have the month in 57 when it first appeared
We had RBW 1 in the family. Oxfordshire reg, got it on a jag the day the original BW 1903 Oxfordshire number wert from OBW to RBW

The Vanguard? They made plenty of them so I assume sales topped up the company's coffers quite well, many were exported too which was a big deal following WW2.
