Truly we will look back at Levin's work as the beginning of the modern human era. Ideal fantasies regarding what we expected "genetic engineering" could lead us to, will instead be pioneered by Levin's work. This may even lead us into and beyond the last frontier. His work should be gaining far more traction than it has as of yet. His work with planaria has already blown the doors of biology wide open and I feel like people haven't really integrated the implications of his experimental evidence into their zeitgeist yet.
I have been watching your videos, I think, nearly from the beginning. I appreciate all you are contributing with your unique intelligence and childlike curiosity. I love your open willingness to explore and share.
I’m sure cells have consciousness and intelligence, but I stick by the firm believe that consciousness is fundamental and when all of our cells die, we’re still around as an entire being. So how cells play into the overall big picture of consciousness is probably on regulating the body. This is not to be confused with the survival. of of the being, which is an entire and complete intelligence which survives physical death. So in conclusion while interesting, I have to say that our two guest are scientific materialists in thinking ie “ consciousness comes from matter as opposed to the theory of idealism that matter is a byproduct of consciousness.
Interesting that there are tens of thousands of great science speakers on TH-cam but so many different people reach this conclusion separately. Quite the signal.
Disagree. Materialism is not the way, bach has crazy ideas like ai can become conscious which is an absolute joke. Bernardo kastrup is much more of a giant than Bach will ever be.
@@Myth1n AI can't become conscious? Based on your biological neurons firing in a way that emerges that silly consciousness that thought that absurd assertion? The irony.🤣
Curt - thank you for facilitating this thought-provoking discussion! As someone familiar with Eastern philosophy, I wasn't surprised by the metaphysical conclusions. You might also find it interesting to note that what is refered to as 'third person' in English is actually expressed as 'first person' in in Sanskrit :-)
I would recommend a conversation with Swami Sarvapriyananda to explore eastern metaphysics, epistemology and hard problem of consciousness - which you will find to be axiomatic, principled and evolved. Hopefully, that is an enriching experience for you and your listeners.

Thanks so much Curt, for providing the platform and environment in which these kinds of conversations can take place. You are always well prepared, and I can feel that it is not about you, you just want to be part of some really interesting and in fact extremely important and essential developments, that might prove existential for humankind, as current paradigms are so clearly failing on all kinds of levels. I nearly lost it entirely and started yelling at the screen when Curt said Red Velvet is better than Carrot Cake. That stuff is flavorless garbage. Carrot cake has flavor and texture and is by far the best cake.
Agreed, and very much so. Red velvet cake is just an ungodly amount of icing that sits on top of the thick layer of icing beneath it... with a little plain cake mix thrown in for OH&S safety reasons.
An outstanding conversation. More of these 'two guests from different, yet overlapping fields - with you asking questions' set-ups please, if you will, Curt. Thank you for your hard work.

The intervening 10 minutes as Anna explained that for most of modern history women weren't included in the scientific world discussion is 100 % on the money, and it is something we as humans did to ourselves by not adding their intellectual tool kit to help us reach for the stars. Overall a great exploration of both their work, and really appreciate the work you must have done in order to prepare for this podcast Curt, thank you everyone very much again, peace
One of my core beliefs that is little understood by many, except those in the video and many of the 32k that watched, is that Action and Intent are equivalent. If a stranger to the concept, let it linger a little while as a core, foundational paradigm and I promise you it will take you places you've not been before 🧠
@@brianhershey563 can you elaborate? On a side note, this does remind one of creation myths - "First there was the word" or something like that. The 'word' here could mean intent. Even in Hinduism, I think they say the God Brahma willed the universe into existence.
The key intersection between Michael Levin Anna Ciaunica comes with Michael’s interesting comment on aging. Anna responds with Birth as the necessary juxtaposition that informs Death, and relates to Michael’s question. Of course, Life exists in between. Fundamental to all this is LUCA… Our last universal common ancestor. What is the key driver within LUCA that did not exist before LUCA? This is like Michael’s assertion that intelligence and meaning is everywhere. Equivalently it is like like Anna’s assertion that for there to be one, there must be another
She is impossible to follow. I’m sorry, but you are not addressing your actual audience, you’re stroking your ego with all this academic jargon delivered at breakneck speed. It’s really frustrating, and I promise you the problem isn’t with my comprehension skills, it’s that you need to slow TF down and make sure you’re being understood. No doubt you feel like you’re having a really intelligent discussion, but it takes more intelligence to communicate effectively. That’s what good interviewers do. Sorry, i’m annoyed and unimpressed. Too bad, because this started off being very interesting.
Whether you're a scientist or just a curious individual who wants to know about the world you live in, it is of utmost significance to learn about the "Self" from the first hand experience. No logic or semantics will give you that. To experience the true nature of yourself you would need to explore your inner sensations and mechanism that makes you "you". For this, Vipassana technique as taught by Buddha is a very good one albeit not an easy one. It takes years of practice but once the mechanism of self comes forth or as it's said in the tradition the ignorance and metal delusion subside, the true reality of self is evident. Once you know yourself, you can relate to and understand all that is around you better.
There is a wonderful song by The Talking Heads called Heaven is a Place Where Nothing Ever Happens which I always thought of as Anna'a feeling of continuity and Michael's example of the boringness of a goals free existence. I'm really happy to find out that the sun revolves around not a carrot cake (hell) but a Red Velvet Cake with a butterfly resting on top. One of my favorite interviews yet. Thanks!
So, i wonder if you could reinterview these two, in a year or longer. And interview them on their reflections on this interview. I feel these two have each the other half of the full "key". In both understanding really what the other is saying, they both could really see. Your absolute best episode. The convergence of what you are looking for. 🎉
We cannot be ourselves without others. No man is an island in other words. We are not whole without interaction. As we read others we then become ourselves.
This was so frustrating to listen to. I know she's saying something meaningful and worthwhile just from the glimpses I could understand, but what she said was mostly unintelligible and left me frustrated and thinking profusely about what the hell she's talking about each time she spoke. I was even sighing much more than Michael Levin does 😆 out of frustrated concentration to understand her.
Our comprehension is based upon our personal reflection of our levels of coherency. IDK what's your level of understanding but it's ok, being frustrated is normal. Don't be too hard on yourself. Some things are hard to grasp, If our perspective is based on linear thinking. I'll try to explain as best i can. She speaks of a conscious state. If you take imagination reality and insanity and consider them as superpositions that cannot intersect in ways where each will conflict. Is exactly what Einstein said. Insanity is doing something over and over expecting different results. In this state of insanity he views his thoughts that reflect his reality but his thoughts are lost in the imaginary. If i imagine that my insanity is the cause for my reality then it's plain insanity right? What dina is talking about is the hidden aspect of a 4th dimensional state and its the perceived understanding of Sanity. If applied correctly. Then the state of mind that you are in. Has no foundational ground to stand. Sanity is the observable view of all states converged into one constant state. So sanity can see the objective reality of what causes insanity. I hope you can understand. To best solve our frustrations is to learn and study in multiple subjects. Instead of trying to master one. If you have a vast range of knowledge, the master will always be a student, in a topic they have no clue how to explain. Isn't it insane? 🤯
Consciousness is in a tachyon dimension and can not be used or explained using the current theories... the describe the creation of our visible state ...perfectly
Yeah get good at simultaneously filtering and reinterpreting what she says to something you can unreliable while also digesting the true depth of such complex topics fast enough to not get left behind. Be better.
Curt thank you for giving us this wonderful discussion. It's a good week when a new video with Michael is on your channel. Wonderful to be introduced to Anna and her ideas as well. This is worth watching a few times! All three of you have a gift for presenting complicated information in a clear way.
Memory matters. I don't understand saying we are not tied to the memories of the past. I wake up every day and no matter the situation I understand things that I learned from a very young age and no amount of change changes that. We need memories so not to do stupid things and die within the first hour of the day.
That's right. And yet you regularly re-member the members of your memory. So rather than an unmovable foundation, they are closer to Legos that you can reassemble as you better understand the world.
He didn't say memories don't matter and he didn't say we're not tied to them or that we can't learn from them to not do stupid things. He said we don't have to be loyal to them, it's a choice if you do. You have the freedom to reinterpret your memories however you want and your past isn't an inflatable record that forces you into a perspective. This is why the phenomenon of memories changing happens. Think of it like, memories don't actually change, how our mind interprets them change, even if it only happened five minutes ago or as he said, a second ago, your brain can still have a different interpretation and seem like you have inaccurate memories.
Anna sounds like a rambling philosophical bullshitter that can't get a single simple message across while Michael is obviously a future Nobel laureate that is empathetic and communicative.
It's really cool that Dina Rudick helped you with this production, Curt. What's the story behind that? Every appearance of Michael Levin is worth savouring. Anna is also very interesting.

Another immensely interesting TOE. That the views of Levin and Ciaunica don't represent the scientific consensus in their respective fields is just a sign that much that goes on under the banner of science remains tainted by pre-scientific, extra-scientific or anti-scientific thinking.
Mike covered the difference bw clocks and thermostats. Not really precisely correctly, as clocks can be tuned to be faster or slower. On the other end, can dogs evolve? Growth is the major initial adaptation period. Apparently that part is preprogrammed to also repair itself much better than for later non-adaptation one. There is an Initial influx of something during growth, or a program, that is turned off at the end of it, and a simpler one sets in, one that does not include the kind of regeneration available to the growth part.
I'm interested in the idea of there being no clocks in nature. The solar cycle is a sort of clock (measuring passages of the sun) - it is just the interim quantification is human designed.
Ultimately, there is no answer to that question. Even for people who think the answer is "God", that still leaves the question of what built the God? At some point, you just have to say "it always existed, as the base layer of eternal reality". The concept of God, doesn't answer any fundamental question, it just kicks the can down the road.

I think the lady in confused about why epicircles were dropped... Not because they became ellipces, but because the planets are not moving around the Earth...
Or as Ai puts it.... Yeah, the epicycles were part of Ptolemaic astronomy, where planets were thought to move in complex loops (epicycles) around Earth to explain their irregular motion. It was an attempt to keep the geocentric model (Earth at the center) intact, even though planetary movements didn’t fit neatly into perfect circles. The problem? It was overly complex and ultimately unnecessary. When Copernicus proposed the heliocentric model (Sun at the center), and later when Kepler discovered that orbits are elliptical, it became clear that epicycles were just an artificial fix for a flawed assumption (Earth-centered orbits). The Lesson from Epicycles? 👉 Sometimes, overcomplicated explanations exist only because we’re starting with the wrong assumption. 👉 The real solution often isn’t adding more layers but removing the need for them in the first place. 👉 What seemed necessary and logical was actually a band-aid for a deeper misunderstanding. This applies beyond astronomy-how many things today are like epicycles? Overcomplicated business models, marketing strategies, economic systems, even aspects of AI and consciousness studies might just be patches on a fundamentally flawed premise. Anything you’re thinking of that might be a modern-day epicycle?
The argument for or against free will always seems like it has to be one or the other. We often make decisions based on external forces, and free will is how we choose to deal with any given situation. Free will is not limited by external forces, though.
A flower comes together from many parts - but it isn't a flower until it opens up. Same with the eyeball. It can't be bottom-up but has to be top-down. The stomo deum or 'mouth of god' the hole at the top of the embryo becomes the heart.
Evolution must be understood as the evolution of an individual consciousness within a life form. For this progression to continue, reincarnation is necessary. Consciousness departs from the physical realm into the realm of consciousness and eventually returns. This return shapes the physical form according to the conditions that enable the individual consciousness to evolve further.
but who decides at each moment in time which of all efforts possible to apply directed towards a certain, let's assume constant, goal, will be in fact chosen to determine our future?

What if life is an underlying force that manifests in our reality through persistence of biological objects. It's like when water is just boiling, these bubbles form and those are like all of the living organisms.
If we quote Plato. We can say nothing about formation or experience without understanding the soul. FORM pervades the whole subject matter. and is preceding principle of body.

I think humanity must come to terms with the fact that as a collective or a individual consciousness heaven is attainable on earth through one’s own perspective which hopefully god willing will be forever changing as to keep the universe expanding and the discovery of what we are exciting and more open ended as madame has said. Now heaven is going to be different for every aspect/perspective… one man’s hell is another’s heaven they say… and even concepts of hell I think are off. But I’m a no thing my perspective is my own(or is it?😮)
4:27 "the second person comes first", like parents. Check. The Self comes and goes. For example: When anger starts burning in my mind, my mind becomes Hell and whatever my Self has been, at that very moment it "dies", disappears, if it is not adapted for life in Hell. But a new "me" is "born", appears at the same time: a Demon-me. Because the new mental state - Hell - supports its existence. Everyone around me can witness this death and re-birth, it's a real thing. This Demon-me will live my life for as long as the Hell fires burn in my mind, and in turn the Demon-me will "pour oil on the fire" by its acting. But eventually, the Demon-me will stop "pouring the oil on fire", and the Hell fires will subside having been left without fuel. In turn, as the fires are extinguished, the Demon-me will finally "die". Which of my Selves will be "born" after this, that depends on what I do next with my thoughts, speech, body, and how that acting changes my mental state. So in this interdependence, I can be reborn as an animal - if I act by following my animalistic insticts and start acting like an animal . Or I can be born as a formless being, a being without body if I go into deep meditation or enter into a trance or if I take some drugs... Or I can be a Hungry Ghost, a being with a huge belly and pinhole sized mouth so I can never satisfy my hunger - obviously, in this case I am an addict and my mind is a special kind of Hell.. Or I can be reborn as a normal average human being, if I act like a normal human acts, and if that acting makes my mental state into a normal human world... Options are limitless, potential selves are innumerable, and for exactly this reason, none of them is real. There is no true Self. Whatever we think is "me, mine", it really is not. Check for yourself and see: this is true.
I think I'd have no problems being immortal. I already have more than I can do in a typical human life. And, if at some point in thousands or millions of years I feel different I'll worry about that after I've had those thousands or millions of years to enjoy myself.
Free will = full degrees of freedom in every direction (prone to randomness) Non-free will = limited freedom but linear enough to be useful I think if we had free will, we would be entirely overwhelmed by the experience and self destruct.
Maybe the definition of free will is nonsensical than. I think free will is when you can choose between 2 things. Now, everything seems to be choosing between things... like the river that flows in one direction or the other... but than you see "oh, it is not choosing to do that, is bound to the laws of physics"... and the question is, are we just a river? Or is there something introducing a "will" at all? If yes, then you have a river thet wills things. What is the thing that wills something? Can it be free? I think that is an impossible thing to prove ultimately. We have to asume just like we asume it is true that we are experiencing reality (just cause it feels like we are).. In the same sense, it seems as if we can choose between things. Idk though. Greetings from Germany

I’m so glad you’re enjoying the content!
@@gnostic1955errr, neither of them think/have stated that consciousness emerges from matter 🧐

Great interview!
Thanks!
Thank you Curt!
So, i wonder if you could reinterview these two, in a year or longer. And interview them on their reflections on this interview.
I feel these two have each the other half of the full "key".

this makes sense!
Consciousness is in a tachyon dimension and can not be used or explained using the current theories... the describe the creation of our visible state ...perfectly

Very nice conversation.

Deconstructing the function blocks...or applying function block analogs...at what point does it become important to know what built the hardware.

Now how does all this relate to the field of quantum physics in as much as. interconnected life forms and intelligent systems.
A path diverges in a forest, which path has more value to your self(a bubble floating down stream)? A photon through a double slit?
Evolution must be understood as the evolution of an individual consciousness within a life form. For this progression to continue, reincarnation is necessary. Consciousness departs from the physical realm into the realm of consciousness and eventually returns. This return shapes the physical form according to the conditions that enable the individual consciousness to evolve further.

"If one should desire to live in this world a hundred years, one should live performing Karma. Thus thou mayest live; there is no other way. By doing this, Karma (the fruits of thy actions) will not defile thee. After leaving their bodies, they who have killed the Self go to the worlds of the Asuras, covered with blinding ignorance. That One, though motionless, is swifter than the mind. The senses can never overtake It, for It ever goes before. Though immovable, It travels faster than those who run. By It the all-pervading air sustains all living beings. It moves and It moves not. It is far and also It is near. It is within and also It is without all this. He who sees all beings in the Self and the Self in all beings, he never turns away from It." - Upanishads

Novelty Craving, it's the force that drives life itself to another big bang cycle... WE cause the big bangs, unless a neighbor get to it first. Then what, encode ourselves into photons and transmit to neighboring cycles, that's what I'm gonna do anyway if I reach LEV, my very own ASI will crush it, we will each be a universe 🙏🦾

But I’m a no thing my perspective is my own(or is it?😮)
4:27
"the second person comes first", like parents.
Free will = full degrees of freedom in every direction (prone to randomness)
Non-free will = limited freedom but linear enough to be useful
I think if we had free will, we would be entirely overwhelmed by the experience and self destruct.
Free will = ability to choose (bad things) - we do choose to self destruct
Non-free will = determinism (luveciferian science)
@@TBT.Stories Choice is usually (forced) illusion: Coke or Fanta. There is no choice, just sugar.
you mean like how if you don't have a job and tenure with an agenced platform as a mediated and monetized institutional muppet you're unemployed and homeless and cancelled and erasured and etc...
@v2ike6udik i don't care about what you end up doing or how much you had to pay for it (even your life). If you can consider a realistic choice, you are free. The thing is, what thing is doing the "considering" (ia Consciousness) ... is that thing comprehensible? Is that thing maybe free?
You know?... I mean, I ultimately don't know, but you question is a reductionistic way of thinking about i

Michael’s question of infinity of the heaven of Judeo-Christian heaven notion is so different from the eternal present moment described in most eastern faiths like Buddhism and various schools of Vedic thought.
If Michael Levin wants more people to understand his work, he should consider working with a speech therapist. He speaks too quickly and too often mumbles. It is hard enough to wrestle with his ideas and arguments. But struggling to make out his words leaves me too exhausted to get to those ideas.
