Ok ok ok ok ok OK. Listen, I was a huuuuge gleek back in my day. Think I jumped on the wagon at season 2 and nose dived off at what I thought was season 6. Just got towards the end of the video and quickly realized I actually stopped after S5 because WHAT THE FUCK? THEY HAD COACH BEISTE TRANSITIOOONNN??? What was the point of “never been kissed” if she was trans? It was so refreshing to me to have a masculine presenting woman that wasn’t a lesbian or trans (and I say that as a stud lesbian) dealing with her masculine and feminine sides. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised but it seems so damn pandering. Trans visibility matters but not when it’s shoehorned in there as an afterthought.
They ruined Quinn's character, because ryan murphy dont like the actress (dianna). Bcs Quinn supposed to be the mean girl but turned out to be the well developed character and everyone loves Quinn. But ryan hates her for that, so after season 1 ryan started to sabotage her character, the feud continued until Dianna couldn't take it anymore, She left the show after season 3 and came back only as guest stars
Well i absolutely loved Kurt in the first two seasons, but S3 and onwards he was tolerable 15% of the time to me, with his voice being responsable for a large percentage of the time where i find him intolerable. Overral tho, Kurt's a great character especially the first two seasons, but not immune to any of the flaws of the writing more than anyone else
@@ivyeorii I think he'd probably attempt "Guns and Ships", give up, then do the *entirety* of "My Shot" while everyone looks at him like a fucking idiot
Except when he reprimanded Tina when she spoke up and said she was tired of Rachel getting all of the attention. Otherwise he didn’t really do anything wrong
Remember when MARLEY had to apologise for fainting from her eating disorder. She Had to be The one to apologise because everyone was mad at her for fainting. SHE HAD TO APOLOGISE FOR HER EATING DISORDER
Plus everyone immediately forgave and forgot about Kitty being the actual damn reason why Marley developed an eating disorder. Yet Marley costing the win for sectionals kept being brought up as a joke.
Glee has one flawless point: Burt Hummel! Kurt's father is the most loving character ever. He doesn't care for Kurt's sexuality, he only cared for his son's happiness and safety! When Finn made a homophobic comment about Kurt, he was willing to break up with his beloved girlfriend (aka Finn's mother) to protect his son! Burt is the best by far!
@@AleciaFluffyPresents but what about Unique texting with Ryder using other girl photo? it was weird besides Burt was in all 6 seasons and Unique didn't have much screen time but I like her too so I understand 😊
@@emilynichol1191 lmao I used to think it was such a great show but at the same time I had to skip lots of parts because I couldn't stand cringing at it
Remember when Ryder had enough trust in the glee club to share that he had been molested and Artie and Sam acted like Ryder should BE GRATEFUL that a "hot teenage girl had played with his junk" and it was never brought up again and they faced ZERO CONSEQUENCES for it??? It still makes me angry to this day
Unfortunate reflection of reality. There are even women who think that men cannot refuse sex from a woman, and if he does he's either gay or she's going to force herself on him anyway.
Not many people talk about how after Cory's death, Sam was basically made to be a discount Finn. They deadass even put him in the same clothes that Cory wore as Finn, and had him take the same path that Finn would have. This was so apparent to me and still disgusts me to this day.
I admire what they were trying to do with Sam (the show needed a strong ‘everyman’ lead with Finn gone and Sam seemed like a good fit). I actually think Chord stepped up to the plate pretty well but by Season Six... when he become the coach of New Directions at the end, yeah it was blatantly apparent they just gave him Finn’s storyline. Hell, they even had time for a brief romance with him and Rachel!
Yeah I find it really bad when Sam kissed Rachel in season 6 or 5 ( can't remember which one ). And it also sucked because since we never got a conclusion of what happens to Cory/Fun, as to Rachel just moving passed it without really going back to her roots but goes bad as the seasons continue
Just checked, the price of a two bedroom in Bushwick for rent while season 4 was airing was roughly 1900$ on average. That doesn't seem like that much of a stretch, especially since they said that the building had a lot of broken amenities and it was a really bad neighbourhood in Bushwick?
That scene made me sob and made me so mad, as someone who’s been through something like that, it was really hard for me to see the glee members (mainly Artie and Sam) make a joke out of it. And it was never brought up again, which was actually so sad cause Ryder could’ve had a much more amazing storyline. Ryder’s voice was amazing and that scene and the song, Everybody Hurts, makes me sob my eyes out everytime I watch it!
I know I really thought he would be super homophobic but was way more accepting than I thought he’d be,like way more than most people are in the early 2000s one of the best character hands down he’d be way better if he had more plot and more screen time than 10 mins max
Well, I was drunk when I wrote this. I meant "*Bad on* and off the show". Thank you person who liked it for making me aware of my mistake and being able to correct it.
Honestly the editing in the first season is top tier! That’s the best example, but there were so many other times they used the editing for humor, but it was funny because it was more subtle. After season one they started beating you over the head with the editing gags and it got exhausting.
@@bisexial_disaster2795 Oh, I haven't noticed it in the first season, or forgot, it has been a few years, over a decade now lol, damn I feel old. Anyways, thank you for clearing that up!
It also annoys me that people point out that 'this was so fucked up' as if that was not already part of the text. The show is already pointing out its a bad idea and using it as a joke.
You forgot one of the worst parts of the school shooting episode: Ryder: Hey I just wanted to tell everyone I got molested when I was 11 by my babysitter. Artie and Sam: Wow that’s so cool man. Getting abused by an older woman is hot. We are going to completely ignore how bad that sounds, never apologize, and suffer no consequences for this other than Will saying “hey that’s not cool man.” Kitty: I am a survivor as well, Ryder. I haven’t been able to share this and it’s hard coming forward. Ryder: Lol I just told you all that because I’m trying to figure out who’s catfishing me. Nothing else about this is important. Just figuring out who my catfisher is so I can have a mini arc in the finale.
THIS ANGERED ME SO MUCH OMGG Like WUT? You can't bring something like molestation up, and not talk about it again. And the fact that Artie and Sam thought it was cool/hot? It angered me so much, it dishonours real victims and gives the idea that molestation is something 'good' ( i say that as the way that Sam and Artie were talking, it was almost like they were jealous of Ryder).
Yea they didn’t do it properly ✨at all✨ , but they were trying to show how people brush off men’s assault. Even Ryder didn’t take his experience seriously. It would’ve been more impactful it we saw how that experience affected him long term over the show, but then it wouldn’t be glee.
@@ashleighdean6943 it was a valid plotline since many do undermine the experiences of male victims... but the fact that they never learnt what they did wrong makes it so so bad
That had so much potential for a strong relationship between Ryder and Kitty as well as a new understanding on why Kitty is such an awful character in the beginning but they literally ignored it like what??
This is one of the most complete analysis of the Glee phenomenon I have ever seen. Too many people nowadays simply label is as dated and cringeworthy, it's nice that someone tries to understand why people liked it instead.
The most heartbreaking moments of audio in glee are in season 3, when the teachers are talking about Karofsky’s suicide attempt and sue says “i keep imagining how his father must have felt finding him” and it cuts to these awful wails and screams from his dad, and in Quarterback when the music cuts out and Santana is sobbing and then screaming. Glee didn’t have very many moments of serious emotion being shown without making it a joke, but those two parts… man. i almost cry every time i hear them.
I kinda stopped in around season 4 but you're so right about the Karofsky scene. This show is so stupid but that scene will absolutely make me sob every time.
Glee is basically told from Rachel's point of view. Rachel's point of view is self-centered, cyclical, melodramatic, and mostly self-fulfilling fantasy. Exactly like a spoiled, egotistical teenager who doesn't understand why they can't do whatever they want. I knew so many theatre geeks who thought they were Rachel and also thought they could act like her.... and probably still do.
You're completely right! It also explains why so much time was spent on Rachel's silly "problems" but when other characters went through real trauma it was forgotten about within an episode because it either had nothing to do with Rachel or she wasn't there (e.g. the school shooting and Marley's eating disorder)
Like I literally remember girls who acted just like Rachel they were self-centered egotistical theater kids whi thought the world was revolved around white Broadway actors. I literally remember getting into an argument with a few theater kids in this ultimately broke my love of theater arguing about how Hamilton who is a white man shouldn’t be played by Hispanic or Latino actor because Hamilton was white even though Hamilton racepassed and could technically in today’s modern times be described as multi racial
@@aviparmy-lthatblinkedoncew774 The only reason Hamilton shouldn't be played by a white actor is because that would mean he wouldn't have been played by Lin
I find it really funny that Gorillaz actively and publicly denied Glee, cause their song Clint Eastwood (banger) is in the first Trolls movie. It has "MCR refusing to let Twilight use their music but personally recorded Welcome to the Black Parade in simlish for the Sims" energy
Twilight portrayed an abusive relationship as romantic, had a main character pretending to be native american when the actor wasn’t, and was written by someone who based one of the love interests on her own brother. Sims is a good, pretty unproblematic series of games with multiple iconic gothic and alt characters that tons of people remember by name even 22 years later. i see why they didn’t want to be associated with Twilight and i think there’s nothing weird or hypocritical about them then going on to put a song into Sims 3.
@@gothboithick tbh i just think at the time it felt weird for their frontman because, althought it was not as well know at the time as today, the concept of a vampire boyfriend and all that was based on mcr's concept and main vocalist. maybe today that would be another thing but at the time maybe he felt weird about it
can we agree that they did tina so dirty giving her an unnecessary fake stutter, her rude attitude and backwards character development. Really doing the asian representation dirty. Mike Chang's character development was amazing why couldn't they do that with Tina's?
I KNOW. Kurts voice was made for broadway and they instead had to make everything about Rachel and made Kurt Pursue fashion. Idk it just felt undeserved
Not to mention that with a voice as unique as his he'd get into almost every stage art centric school there is my brother for example has a very wide vocal range (baritone up to Altus) and got a scholarship because of it
@@fruitysoupy YES EXACTLY even NYADA is not a real school he should've gotten in the first time instead of Rachel, and that may be just my hatred towards Rachel but I think Kurt should have gotten in first.
On the point of how Glee handled its LGBT characters, the one standout memory I have from the show is the Teen Drinking episode where, when Blaine was questioning whether he might be Bisexual, Kurt's immediate response was, "Bisexual is term gay people use to tiptoe back into the closet", and every once in a while that sneaks up on me like being smacked in the back of the head with a rotting Mackerel.
Idk if it's just me but it feels like something that Kurt as a character wouldn't say, like it feels out of character for him specifically. Like yeah ok maybe he's just saying it bc he's jealous or whatever, but even then that just felt like a bizarre and overly mean line coming from him.
That was the general attitude about bisexuality until recently, think Sex and the City when Carrie said “I'm not even sure bisexuality exists. I think it's just a layover on the way to Gaytown.” Men who were bi were seen as “easing into” being gay, and women who were bi were seen as performing their sexuality for male attention. It wasn’t really until the mid-2010s that bisexuality and pansexuality were more broadly accepted.
Santana was reprimanded by Will for the way she reacted to being outed, but Finn was never chastized for outing her. It sucked because I loved her storyline but she definitely wasn't treated like Kurt.
because ryan murphy has sympathy for kurt, being a gay man himself. that’s why it was written with such care. santana got none of that because he doesn’t care about lesbians/wlw. it’s clear too with how brittany being bi is treated mostly as a result of her hyper sexuality
Remember the dodgeball thing the way Finn the one started it and yet will and Burt make a whole video about Santana being gay and made sue release it. the slap from Santana to Finn always worth it to me.
Omg I just started Glee for the first time and I thought I was the only one that felt that there was favouritism with Kurt's homosexuality vs Santana's like?? Glad I'm not the only one
this reminds me of one of my favorite Tumblr quotes of all time: just because a television show doesn't actively address a specific issue doesn't mean they're actively avoiding it either. you know what happens when you try to stuff every possible social debate under the sun into one show? you get glee. that's what happens.
OMG THIS!! This is brilliant and should be copied and pasted as a reply to every Twitter rant of people overreacting to something being “problematic” because it didn’t explicit address every single social issue.
It reminds me when, after a particularly bad wave of school shootings, people were asking if Abbott Elementary was going to do a SS episode. Like... What's that gonna do to solve the issue??
My favourite plot point that was introduced and forgotten - Kurt finds out his dad has cancer in Season 4 Episode 10, and it isn't mentioned again until EPISODE 21
As a ex-show choir kid, you could TELL who the Glee kids were. The ones who joined because they liked the show and quit at the end of the semester. Some of the Glee kids stayed though, and they were incredible
For the end of the school year I was still online so I just pretended to do my work for the last month and never turned anything in Alt east I was the only one to actually do that cursive book
oh god I just remembered that they had originally written him in to be a love interest for Kurt, but then Darren Criss was a thing so they...????/f//f/fdsfdfshsd what WAS that character. also Tonight Tonight??????? became popular because his brother? glee? glee fans? whatthe
Yeah this is so true. I also was thinking about season 3 when Sam was a STRIPPER??? HE WAS LIKE 17 WTF. They literally changed Sam’s character each season.
MicTheSnare: craps all over glee as a show Me, a glee fan: understandable, can’t argue with you Mic: implies Glee’s rendition of “smooth criminal” is bad Me: now here’s what we ain’t gonna do
Smooth Criminal was ONE of the few Several BEST covers in the whole show, it’s different, and the number was great, also because Grant Gustin’s a hottie...
It’s amazing and the cellos are actually a band and they made amazing covers of rock pop classical and a lot more Musik 2cellos if anyone wants to look them up
I hate how Kurt had a flipping amazing audition and blows everyone away, and Rachel chokes, but Rachel is the one to get in. Rachel is always succeeding, regardless of what she does, and Kurt is always failing, no matter how good he is. It's incredibly frustrating for me, both as someone who loves Kurt and from an unbiased POV.
for real! It’s so unfair on kurt. let’s not forget he only got into NYADA because he was a friend of Rachel’s. And let’s not forget how the writers made him throw the diva off in season 1. like seriously. CMON!!! We needed a strong actor like Chris to break the male stereotype of having a deep voice and being masculine, and hitting that high note!!! (plus a really dark fact about this: when Chris was in high school he asked to sing this song in choir, and his teachers said no because he’s a boy. Ryan Murphy found out about this and decided to make this episode about this. Ryan Murphy is known for bullying Chris by bringing up things like this via Kurt.)
@@evetaylor7704 I knew about that! Like, maybe he doesn't want to think of that again, Ryan? I don't know Chris's true thoughts on that matter, but I don't think I'd be very happy. If Chris was okay with that, then like, okay. But I don't understand why Chris was not fully appreciated by people. He was such a talented actor, and writer, and he had many other talents that weren't even shown on the show. The writers were just unfair to both Chris, and Kurt. I wanted to see him win, and not on other people's conditions. Kurt's character had a huge amount of potential for a legendary triumph and I think the set up just led us to a very unfortunate disappointment. I still adore Kurt, but why'd they do him dirty like that?
@@lillyfaulkner7325 precisely! many people believe it’s because Ryan Murphy is notorious for having bullied Chris through the character of Kurt (sourced from Naya Rivera’s tweets and news articles) so i believe Ryan did him dirty like this because he bullied Chris so didn’t give his character anything to cherish like the others. One example of Ryan’s bullying (i think most people know this but still) was when Naya was forced to stand there after the Britanna proposal and insult kurt/chris for roughly 4 minutes straight. Naya said in tweets and chris mentioned in some interviews that after every take of that scene, chris had to leave the set and cry :( before coming back on. Naya said she felt so uncomfortable and unhappy filming this scene and felt obliged to apologise to Chris when this was Ryan’s doing! Naya has stated that Ryan bullied Chris in ways like this throughout the entire show, some less obvious than others (like the defying gravity incident) but i believe that Ryan’s bullying of Chris meant that he took stuff away from this character, such as killer solos and character credit. I think Ryan was out of order for doing this, and personally i do not understand why he even wrote Chris into glee if all he was going to do was A) bully him through the character of Kurt. B) Take away everything Kurt came close to achieving, such as a Klaine wedding that Klaine shippers waited a whole season and year for (ik the Britanna-Klaine wedding happened and yes it’s my fav glee scene, but i mean an individual Klaine wedding, rather than a shared wedding with another couple) and C) Just sideline him all the time in the first three seasons! I think it was really unfair for Ryan to do this to such a sweet person who had gone through so much, but what irks me more is that Ryan used his weird hatred towards Chris and reflected it in Kurt, adding in snarky little remarks and lines that were, in fact, meant to hurt Chris and make him feel upset and reminded that he is different to most people. :(
@@evetaylor7704 OMG! I knew about both Chris and Naya being uncomfortable about that scene but somehow I missed that Chris had to cry. That makes me really sad. That scene was really gross. Like I get as an actor insults based on your looks, voice, and habits are naturally going to come your way, but that scene was deliberately making fun of his real insecurities, for example his smile. I don't pretend to know who Chris is but that's nasty! Yuck. And Chris was bullied so like, double ew. Also, I, as a Klaine shipper, was also disappointed in the double wedding. Like, I wanted a wedding focused on my favorite couple, and while I really like Brittana, it just took away focus. I was very mad about how they ruined Klaine, they had a pretty good romance going and then Blaine goes OOC and decides to cheat? They were definitely the most serious couple in Glee! It's not believable and it's honestly frustrating. And yes, why would you write someone into a show, LITERALLY write a whole new character in for someone, and then trash it like that? It makes no sense. Who deserved the bashing? Lea/Rachel. Who got it? Chris/Kurt. I can still appreciate some of Kurt's arch and all, but like... Another thing was that in interviews now, Chris does not seem like he's happy he was in Glee, which is just sad. I think one time, he (albeit indirectly) apologized for his role on Glee? He is one of the cast members that would refuse to do a reboot, not that I blame him, and one time he quoted Dolly Parton and basically said though he does not regret his memories, he would not relive them. Referring to Glee. It just makes me sad as one of his fans that he was so mistreated. And I hate that that sounds like me pretending to know him and know what happened because I don't, but from what I see, it was not fair. (Whew! Sorry about these long replies, I'm just a fangirl.)
I wish the story line of Brittany and Santana's love was mentioned. Their character development as a couple was actually beautiful and well-done, unlike maaannnyyy of the other plot lines. I loved the way they went through the motions of being confused and conflicted with their sexuality, and eventually created, in my opinion, the best relationship on the show.
It's a shame they didn't even show them in the last episode. I was hoping to see them maybe forming a family? Or whatever they were doing. It wasn't fair, it was one of the few (or maybe the only😂) non-toxic couple on the show
IM Corona it’s because of the feud between Naya and Lea. Naya asked producers to reduce her role in season 6, I believe because she wanted to focus on her music and other things probably due to how toxic it got. It’s a real shame because it would’ve been amazing to have focused on the original new directions in the last season and yeah, seen where Brittnay and Santana were at in life post-wedding.
Yeah but his own son was sexually harassing Finn and made him uncomfortable and Burt was just screaming at Finn when he said few bad words? The words were bad, don't get me wrong. However they were about THINGS and not about Kurt himself. Go and watch the episode if you want. Kurt didn't suffer ANY circumstances. I always found that unfair.
The worst thing about Glee (IMO) is how new characters would be hyped up, then forgotten 3 episodes later. SJP's Vogue editor, the British guy that Kurt dated, Demi Lovato and Adam Lambert's characters....gone after 3 episodes with little to no explanation.
@@alexestrada5239 Rory like the other Glee Project cast people where only casted for specific amount of episodes. Which kinda sucks, cause for example Unique not even winning it, became a long running member of the series.
We know why the love interests were gone. Fandom outrage. They were good characters but the damn fandom was all teenage girls (I know, I was one), and teenage girls want every story to be fanfiction. The things I'd see on tumblr every time Kurt or Santana kissed someone else, I can't speak of.
Alexander Maxpower exactly! Joe’s fling with Quinn was so cute and they had so much chemistry, then the writers forgot about it 🤷🏻♀️ I feel like the writers forget everything Quinn, like her friendship with Mercedes
The most egregious “no consequences of their actions” part of Glee for me is Kurt attending approximately 4 days of his Vogue internship and then basically never going back again, with a little insert by Sarah Jessica Parker saying yeah it’s chill you’re so talented you don’t even have to come to work
I just know Mr. Schuester would be rapping Young Thug's verse in Havana by Camila Cabello and do it directly towards an underage girl in that stupid Glee room
This really just reminds me of Normani's tweet from 2013 where she called Camila "[her] Lea Michele" - which, given the controversy Camila's gotten into as of late, might've been more accurate than intended.
They gave her Down syndrome bc of course they had to ruin Sues character after season 3 like most of the character arcs and make everyone she cares about have Down syndrome bc....? They even make fun of it later on it’s so ridiculous 😂
yes, but the new swim coach had me belly laughing with her snarky comments about that bronze damn olympic medal in Beijing China and all the shade she threw at Sue for how old she was and the adult vampire baby. ooooo lawdy that was funny
Glee was a moment in time where should be appreciated. In general 2009 was a BIG moment for culture and everything for that matter although it's best off not getting a reboot I just can't imagine hearing will singing despacito infront Santana.
Tell me more about 2009 being such a big moment for culture. I was too busy that year with...well...family emergency explosions. Is that when Glee first premiered??
@@callmeswivelhips8229 Yes. Glee premiered in 2009, which was also the year where pop superstars like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, the Black Eyed Peas, etc. were all scoring massive smash hits that paved the way for a new shiny, bombastic era in pop music. That kind of style fits perfectly for a show about a bunch of campy choir kids. Also, the massive success of music-oriented properties like American Idol and the High School Musical franchise paved the way for a comeback of sorts for musicals around this time because producers realized they could make a lot of money exploiting profits in film/TV and music at the same time. These properties were particularly aimed at young girls, and with the concurring cultural juggernauts of Twilight and Hannah Montana happening at this time, Glee was like a perfect storm of the trends of its time all combined into one, which explains why it was such a pop culture phenomenon when it premiered
Glee and Tumblr go arm in arm in the fact that they both are items of their time that really make a person cringe when looking back, but are so connected to our formative years that a lot of us would fight to death to protect it
I cannot believe you would say "this exists there's nothing we can do about it" about smooth criminal like it isn't one of the most legendary things this show has given us
DO NOT every imply that the glee cover of Smooth Cover with 2cellos doesn’t hold up because that is the best of their songs I will defend this on my deathbed that number is AMAZING
I have to totally disagree about Santana. Her storyline hit me more than Kurt. I love Kurt. But not everyone has a Burt in their life. Santana's outing is a far more likely scenerio.
i agree. santana's story is so much relatable. Being forced to come out and the scene with her abuela not accepting her is so close to the heart of many lgbt. whats sucks so bad is how they handle the aftermath of her forcibly coming out. its basically just about "redeeming" finn. plus the freaking i kissed the girl cover like dafuq?!?
the thing about santana's storyline (which i think is what he is talking about in this video) is that she's outed not only once but twice and they deal with this REALLY poorly in comparison to kurt's coming out in season 1. fr, you can't come to me and say you'd forgive the person who outed you bc they sang a horrific version of girls just wanna have fun, you just can't
Yes! As a gay man of color, I felt her coming out and her grandmother reject her (which actually happened to me), was very touching. And I don't know. I never felt she was a stereotype of a Latina. I just thought her character was, per her own admission, a bitch. But she was so beautifully flawed!
2 things from Glee i will forever be salty about 1: Tike wasn't endgame and they split them up in season 4 after they were the most solid and mature and least problematic pairing FOR TWO WHOLE SEASONS!!!!! 2: Rachel got into NYADA after choking on her audition but Kurt didn't after he slays his and gives arguably he strongest ever performance in terms of vocals and choreography.
I will forever be salty about Miss Mercedes Jones not getting so much more in the show. Everything that was going to be hers was given to Rachel. From Sam to solos to the part of Maria, she lost so much and only got a semi-decent ending.
I am so salty about the Kurt/Rachel NYADA thing but honestly, the Kurt being alive moment and the journey of "you need to get in touch with a side of your performance that isn't just camp" was pretty good. I just wish that something like that happened to Rachel (something that she needed to fix or do differently in order to be better) because she literally just sails through the singing part of NYADA just fine and no one gives her any substantial critiques. I know Lea has an amazing voice but it still would've been great character development to see her grow and humble herself earlier on in the show.
I will say this for Glee: the Bohemian Rhapsody sequence is top tier editing, and probably one of the all-time best visual spectacles ever seen on TV in the 21st century. To. This. Day. I still, even when watching it out of context on TH-cam, get goosebumps every single time I watch it. It definitively shows how the rival show choir beat the New Directions simultaneously with the very reasons as to why ND is a better group of people by having them all show up for Beth's birth, all while _some-fuckin-how_ breathing new life into the greatest pop song ever written. Ryan Murphy's greatest achievement. Bar none.
@@kickflipindi i liked Rachel in season 1-2 because she was actually hardworking while being very very obnoxious but also kind of entertaining Then yknow
okay, i went from crying over finn/cory's episode to laughing and going 'what the fuuuuuuuuuuuck' in less than 10 minutes. this video truly does encapsulate glee.
Remember when they tried to suspend Santana for slapping Finn even though he had it coming and there is so much violence at that school that no one else ever gets in trouble for
Well, actually the meltdown was scripted, but for later in the episode, so when Naya couldn't get through the number without crying, she just decided she would add the meltdown in there. Saved her, and made for a really good acting showcase.

Foxxayy fans have flashbacks to Ryan completely ignoring Sarah& Lily's chemistry in AHS: Coven n Apocalypse. Seriously. He teased that relationship nearly as much as Pitch Perfect did Bechloe. tragic.
There's a new Glee podcast hosted by Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina) and Kevin McHale (Artie). They interviewed Ryan Murphy in the first two episodes, and he said that if he could go back and do it again, he probably would have cancelled the show after Cory's death. He admitted that they filmed The Quarterback way too soon and that it wasn't good for any of them to go back to set so quickly. Kevin said that he and other cast members would occasionally just walk off set during takes to cry. I haven't watched that episode since it aired but I remember absolutely hating it. Glee was my happy place, and to see the characters and cast grieve so openly was not something that I (or they) needed. Also the last two seasons were just awful. They completely ruined so many beloved side characters by giving them horrible storylines (namely Blaine and Tina). They also spent four seasons using Coach Beiste's character to show us that being a woman could look however you wanted it to look, only to totally turn their backs on that and say 'a masculine woman must actually be a trans man.' Seriously, by the end of the show my fanfictions were better than what came out of that writers' room.
I'd agree with almost all of this, but I would gently push back on what you say about Bieste. I am a masculine woman myself, with a number of friends who are trans guys! A lot of them did think they were butch lesbians at first- it's a pretty natural assumption. It doesn't mean all butches are secret trans men, of course (I'm not) but it's certainly not not unrealistic! I also think it's a little unfair to pit masc women and trans guys "against" each other in this way, as if representation for trans men is a "loss" for Butch women in some way. I'm a "rising waters raise all ships" type. More acceptance of trans people will mean more acceptance of gender nonconformity; which is a win for masc women! Of course it would have been nice if Glee (or any show lol) had more masc women or trans characters on it, so they could all stand alone as characters rather than having to represent whole demographics, but I don't have any problem with the storyline itself!
Agreed about Beiste. It's probably the most Glee thing in Glee: Totally sacrificing canon and character development in the name of drama and agenda. It reminds me of Ally McBeal where Ling tells Fish that she doesn't like sex because it gets her too sweaty. Then, maybe an episode or two later, she tells him that she actually REALLY likes sex, as long as she gets REALLY sweaty. This is supposed to be a funny, character-building surprise, but it comes off as the writers just regretting and changing their mind about something and not respecting the audience enough to write within the limitations that they themselves set. Which, again, was Glee's defining characteristic since episode two. And, as for the politics of it, if Glee cared about the struggles of butch women, it would have made a different character into a trans man. And there's no way the money train of Glee would stop just because someone died, no matter what Murphy says now that there are no consequences for him saying so. It may sound callous, but, hey, that's Glee. I find it a total non-coincidence that a show that cared more about drama, agenda, quantity, and tokenism than characters, people, quality, non-toxicity, and compassion, had so many cast members who died young. You can tell the ALFs of the world - dated and cringe on the outside, chaotic and traumatic on the inside - from shows that are timeless and launch tremendous careers, like that other McKinley High show, Freaks and Geeks. To the detriment of its members, its longevity, and society, Glee was an ALF.
honestly i get why bc the death of a major actor obviously screwed w production but glee just gets so. weird during and after the quarterback if that makes sense lmao. and also why tf wasnt dianna agron there???
The best thing about when Glee ended is that if it had had one more season there would have been a Hamilton episode, and that means Will rapping again.
Yeah fun fact about the shooting star episode: Brittany was originally supposed to be killed off in the episode because Heather Morris got pregnant and they didnt know if she was gonna stay on the show or not. So take that as you will
I mean... It's pretty realistic bc those things are horrible and you don't know who could die on those situations but that would have been a big NO for me.
There's a group musical number where KJ Apa dances and does this weird shoulder shimmy that I will never be able to unsee. For ease of access, I'm adding the link here: th-cam.com/video/lUyelSTKRME/w-d-xo.html
This really makes you appreciate teen dramas like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where consequences are the backbone of the entire series where everything that happens is such a huge part of the characters and their growth.
You know, Glee is a terribly written series and I would never legitimately recommend one to watch it, but it also holds such a special place in my heart. It's such a feel-good show and despite the undeniable cringe, it has helped me in so many ways, and I will forever be thankful for that. Out of all the bad that came out of Glee, there was also some really good stuff that people tend to overlook.
It’s like the show changed me bc I can relate to most of the characters but at the same time I hate bc how they handled some topics like Marleys Ed it’s absolutely terrible
@@barbiexan4378 oh I completely agree. They handled every single topic in the worst way possible. Glee writers had the opportunity to tackle real issues very well but decided it was too difficult
WHY DOES NO ONE TALK ABOUT WHEN MARLEY GOT ANOREXIA. everyone in glee club blamed HER for the loss at regionals and not kitty for actually giving her the ed. i didnt even notice how messed up this was til three months ago.
but Marley could choose not to vomit or stop eating. Yes it's partly Kitty's fault, she didn't use a gun and say 'marley I'm forcing u to not eat for these few months'.
@@chungleanne2690 yes, but she knew marley was vulnerable, and even if she didn't, she intentionally played with marley's mind with the intention of messing with her self image. kitty is massively at fault in the ed situation, and glee glossing over it was frustrating to watch
The biggest thing about Glee that always cracks me up, especially in the last seasons, is how people just fuckin come into the school unannounced to sing or some shit
My high school had a pretty substantial drama department and budget. I can say from personal experience that we had alumni appear in the blackbox at random. You know, just before school shootings basically mandated visitor passes and on-site police officers at all times. They’d show up to sing or dance or act or waste time. Some of ‘em even tried to help us technicians and absolutely destroy our welds or test our platforms and flats for idiot proofing.
I really hate what the writers did to Tina in seasons 4 and 5. I can understand why in season 3 she gave up on the goth/emo look, she's growing up and is a teenager and became more confident, but in starting in season 4, she started to act like a child, always whining and complaining and the screaming. She became really mean after that. I will never forgive the writers. They ruined so many characters. The show really put Rachel in the center, and she's the most annoying person ever.
@Mr. Perezident They basically wrote her as a joke... She was Rachel 2.0 but Asian and with less talent. Despite the fact that the character was also written to be smart enough to get into Brown. Such a joke and I can see why the actress doesn't look super pleased about the show when she's asked about it.
Tina's character disolvement from the end of season 3 is a symptom of Ryan Murphy being totally unable to write a shy/introverted character or a character with lower confidence and self esteem
I said it since the beginning and ESPECIALLY after Rachel got into the college and Kurt didn't: Rachel and Schue are the worst characters in the show. It feels like the whole show was created specifically to buff up Lea Michelle's ego, and after the fights between the cast on twitter we can see that that was pretty much the exact case lmao
The main problem was that Ryan Murphy basically fell in love with Lea Michele. From season two and on it became Rachel's show and her side characters, everything she aked for she got. I think Naya Rivera spoke about it on her book about how Santana went from becoming a main character to being shoved to the back again because they didn't get along in real life and you can even see it in the fact that Lea's friends Darren, Chris and Jonathan started to get a lot more screentime as the show progressed while the rest faded in the background.
Just did a rewatch of Glee, and Santana was never a main character. Even in the first season she was just Sue’s crony. I don’t mean to speak ill of dead, but I never understood Naya’s side of this. It sucks that Ryan played favorites with Lea, but Rachel was the female lead of the show, so to cut back on her screentime for Santana wouldn’t have made sense. Especially when Rachel’s part had already been reduced later in the show.
@@nikig2382 Santana was just Quinn's sidekick in season one. After season one, Naya and Heather Morris wanted Brittana relationship be a thing so they could get more screentime. Also Naya's covers are become more popular ( River Deep, Mountain High, Smooth Criminal or Adele mash-up) and Santana and Brittany become the fan favorite characters ( Thanks to Naya and Heather's talents, their chemistry and Brittana relationship) even Naya stealing spots from the chosen one aka Rachel. During season 5, Naya and Lea had a real life beef and writers want to make it on-screen beef. Rachel always was the chosen one. Not Mercedes, Quinn, Brittany or Tina. They was just the side characters in Rachel's shadow. I don't get that. Rachel isn't a likable character or shows no development just like Mic the Snare pointed. Lea Michele is a talented actress and singer, i give her that but she wasn't the only talented one in the cast. Other female characters just deserved better than Rachel's shadow. Santana kinda rid of that but the others aren't.
I think what most fans don't know is that Ryan and Lea knew each other before this show was created, and he wrote the part of Rachel basically FOR her. She and Matthew Morrison -- another Broadway star Ryan knew -- were always meant to be the stars. As the show found a big teen audience and not an adult one, the show gradually became more about only the teen characters, which meant that Rachel became the sole main character, to the detriment of the show. I don't think Lea Michele personally is responsible for the screentime of any of the other characters. It's quite obvious that Ryan Murphy plays favorites -- just look at ANY OF HIS OTHER SHOWS. He reuses the actors he loves over and over again. When Darren Criss came along, Ryan clearly found his "type" and gave Darren tonnnnss of songs (plus continues to use him in multiple shows, and now seems to cast exclusively leading men who look like Darren, to a fairly creepy point). Meanwhile, the people Ryan didn't seem to personally like just got shit all over on the show repeatedly (Chris Colfer post-S2, Jenna Ushkowitz most of the time but especially post-S3, etc.) and were never chosen to act in Ryan's shows again.
"When it was good, there was nothing like it" sums it up very well. I was in my mid 20s when i watched glee and the teen drama and ridiculous story lines were grating at that point. BUT. Having been in some form of choir/chorus or musical theater group all through my time at school, when they were on stage and they hit those big notes, and you could see the emotion on the faces and hear the harmonies welling up like tsunamis - i cried. A LOT. If performing is your thing, then there is NOTHING like it. And glee reminded me of "my time in the spotlight" (if you can call it that lol). Yeah, it's ridiculous, over the top, silly, insane, exaggerated, just straight up DUMB sometimes. And viewed from today, the tokenism is just... oof. But the core of the show - people being passionate about music and performing - is something i will always be able to come back to and hysterically cry over. (Because i did not make it as a singer, like, at all. Singing makes me sad now. But glee reminds me of when i was still able yo dream, like the characters.)
I'm not a performer but I fully agree with you!! I cry when I hear someone singing from the bottom of their hearts. Ughh just watch Death Note Kwang Ho Hong singing.... jeeeshhhh.
“Stopped around season 4.” ME and just about every Glee fan I personally know. The first 3 seasons were magical, problematic sure, but it was magical. The writing, the acting, the Rachel we got from the pilot, Sue and Santana’s insults and one-liners, Brittany etc. I wish it never lost its magic.
@@idek7438 same. I am watching the rest of the series now because I honestly never finished it, not that I can remember, and I like that they decided not to fully act like Finn never died and dedicated their Nationals episode to him, plus some throwback scenes of him when Rachel auditioned for Funny Girl and when she performed the first night. I love The Quarterback and that’s the only reason I watched season 5 but stopped after that terrible “school shooting” episode that aired not even a year after Sandy Hook (which occurred in my hometown) which means they filmed it after the shooting. I was like 7-8 but I remember there was a school shooting episode of Buffy which was set to air one week after Columbine. They obviously cancelled it and another episode after another school shooting occurred and aired them later on. Buffy’s episode was much different though and the shooter was talked out of it and it dealt with bullying and feelings and was much different than the flippant way Glee handled things. I could write a novel about all of it because I just read a few articles but just an example of two very popular teen shows that made very different decisions. Two different eras obviously but I still hate that stupid episode.
there was an old saying in the glee fandom in 2012: "nobody hates glee more than glee fans" we tuned in every week and took it way too seriously and the brainworms will never truly leave me
@@amityislandchum really? everyone I've seen who watches Riverdale are like, Way more self aware than we used to be. might be just the people i follow tho..
I feel like he should have mentioned the fact that glee took on several really big issues, such as the whole Unique situation and Quinn being in a wheelchair, but doing them terribly. Like I can't be the only person who remembers when Will refused to give Unique a key to the staff bathroom because it meant that glee club would have to stop twerking. It was a very problematic show
I always hated that they had unique refer to herself in the third person. It made it seem like being transgender was just a stage performance, or a mask that you can put on, when in reality it’s who you are.
Lukas Asinger and also that the only black main characters they had on the show were like super divas. Glee tried to break stereotypes but only ended up making them worse
Lukas Asinger I feel like Unique’s character was so confused. Like the writers did not know how to represent her identity. It seemed at first she was a drag queen, Unique was just her performance persona. Then, as she becomes a series regular in Season 4, they begin to show that she is actually a trans woman. Then she goes back to dressing as Wade and becoming Unique to sing. Then she goes back to being a trans woman. It’s like the writers didn’t understand that a drag queen and a trans woman are two completely different things.
One Small Correction: Drake actually beat the Glee Cast's Hot 100 record in March 2020, not February.
thats even crazier holy shit
Ok make more gleee videos and I’ll subscribe glee is my life I’ve watched it since season 2 aired on fox and it’s the best show ever

CaptainJacFrost It totally ruined the storyline for Sam and Mercedes. ☹️
Artie and Sam: Wow that’s so cool man. Getting abused by an older woman is hot. We are going to completely ignore how bad that sounds, never apologize, and suffer no consequences for this other than Will saying “hey that’s not cool man.”
Kitty: I am a survivor as well, Ryder. I haven’t been able to share this and it’s hard coming forward.
Ryder: Lol I just told you all that because I’m trying to figure out who’s catfishing me. Nothing else about this is important. Just figuring out who my catfisher is so I can have a mini arc in the finale.

Like WUT? You can't bring something like molestation up, and not talk about it again. And the fact that Artie and Sam thought it was cool/hot?
Every time I see the karofsky scene, karofskys dads screams sound so real. The actor put everything into that
Glee is basically told from Rachel's point of view.
It wasn’t really until the mid-2010s that bisexuality and pansexuality were more broadly accepted.
tbf i loved the ‘i’d say bye but i didn’t want to scare you’ line from that episode
I genuinely blame this line for slamming me into a closet where i didn’t realize i was bisexual until after high school.
You have such a way with words
Santana was reprimanded by Will for the way she reacted to being outed, but Finn was never chastized for outing her. It sucked because I loved her storyline but she definitely wasn't treated like Kurt.
Exactly! I was so angry when it happened 😠
because ryan murphy has sympathy for kurt, being a gay man himself. that’s why it was written with such care. santana got none of that because he doesn’t care about lesbians/wlw. it’s clear too with how brittany being bi is treated mostly as a result of her hyper sexuality
Remember the dodgeball thing the way Finn the one started it and yet will and Burt make a whole video about Santana being gay and made sue release it. the slap from Santana to Finn always worth it to me.
It's fucking awful.
Omg I just started Glee for the first time and I thought I was the only one that felt that there was favouritism with Kurt's homosexuality vs Santana's like?? Glad I'm not the only one

What happened there ?
@Craig Simpson why did you copy a comment ?
For me, it's after season 4
(Whew! Sorry about these long replies, I'm just a fangirl.)
this whole thread expressed my thoughts well enough. thank you, i couldn't have said it better myself! justice for chris :')

Exactly
yeah he literally didn’t give a fuck about santana and brittany. naya rivera CARRIED that show, but he completely dismissed that.
It's a shame they didn't even show them in the last episode. I was hoping to see them maybe forming a family? Or whatever they were doing. It wasn't fair, it was one of the few (or maybe the only😂) non-toxic couple on the show
ryan murphy sucks tbh
IM Corona it’s because of the feud between Naya and Lea. Naya asked producers to reduce her role in season 6, I believe because she wanted to focus on her music and other things probably due to how toxic it got. It’s a real shame because it would’ve been amazing to have focused on the original new directions in the last season and yeah, seen where Brittnay and Santana were at in life post-wedding.

The worst thing about Glee (IMO) is how new characters would be hyped up, then forgotten 3 episodes later. SJP's Vogue editor, the British guy that Kurt dated, Demi Lovato and Adam Lambert's characters....gone after 3 episodes with little to no explanation.

Alexander Maxpower exactly! Joe’s fling with Quinn was so cute and they had so much chemistry, then the writers forgot about it 🤷🏻♀️
I feel like the writers forget everything Quinn, like her friendship with Mercedes
The most egregious “no consequences of their actions” part of Glee for me is Kurt attending approximately 4 days of his Vogue internship and then basically never going back again, with a little insert by Sarah Jessica Parker saying yeah it’s chill you’re so talented you don’t even have to come to work
I literally forgot about that until you mentioned it lol

I have to totally disagree about Santana. Her storyline hit me more than Kurt.
I love Kurt. But not everyone has a Burt in their life. Santana's outing is a far more likely scenerio.
i also liked santana's storyline more than kurt's. it could be bc wlw are less positively represented or not represented at all than mlm.
Yes and santana wasnt a steortypical angelic but sassy gay. She was a latina steotype however but thats another thing
i agree. santana's story is so much relatable.
Are we not going to talk about Unique's "If I Were a Boy"??? Like, the sheer perfection of Alex Newell in that moment....
Definitely one of my faves, that performance gave me chills
2 things from Glee i will forever be salty about
1: Tike wasn't endgame and they split them up in season 4 after they were the most solid and mature and least problematic pairing FOR TWO WHOLE SEASONS!!!!!
2: Rachel got into NYADA after choking on her audition but Kurt didn't after he slays his and gives arguably he strongest ever performance in terms of vocals and choreography.
i like tike more than tartie but i’m happy jenna and kevin where together
Im legit still mad about tike not being endgame
BURT HUMMEL IS THE BEST CHARACTER AND I STAND BY THAT
I will forever be salty about Miss Mercedes Jones not getting so much more in the show.

Glee season 3: also known as “Ryan Murphy Continues to Hate Sapphics”.
They teased FaBerry so f*cking hard that season only to say NOPE.
Foxxayy fans have flashbacks to Ryan completely ignoring Sarah& Lily's chemistry in AHS: Coven n Apocalypse. Seriously. He teased that relationship nearly as much as Pitch Perfect did Bechloe. tragic.
He hated sapphics and disabled people, but like REALLY REALLY hated them
There's a new Glee podcast hosted by Jenna Ushkowitz (Tina) and Kevin McHale (Artie).
Agreed with everything there
honestly i get why bc the death of a major actor obviously screwed w production but glee just gets so. weird during and after the quarterback if that makes sense lmao. and also why tf wasnt dianna agron there???
The best thing about when Glee ended is that if it had had one more season there would have been a Hamilton episode, and that means Will rapping again.
That would be horrific
NO
Yeah fun fact about the shooting star episode: Brittany was originally supposed to be killed off in the episode because Heather Morris got pregnant and they didnt know if she was gonna stay on the show or not. So take that as you will
That somehow makes it worse!
That’s... literally worse than making Brittany the smartest person alive
Oof.. they were really going to kill her off in a school shooting? So very tasteless eek
I mean... It's pretty realistic bc those things are horrible and you don't know who could die on those situations but that would have been a big NO for me.
what????
It’s hilarious that Riverdale tries to be the bad, cringey version of Glee, when Glee is already the bad, cringey version of Glee.
Yet somehow Glee did that better
I fucking wheezed at this comment, that should honestly be the tagline for Glee
Glee: the cringey version of Glee
That makes Riverdale cringe².
@@thrownstair lmao yes

This really makes you appreciate teen dramas like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, where consequences are the backbone of the entire series where everything that happens is such a huge part of the characters and their growth.
An hour commentary and analysis on Glee is something I never knew I needed. It's like watching a perfectly made thesis, which is awesome
*Gleesis
@@TenisJr oh damn, missed that 😂
I didn't know I needed this and yet I had to watch every second of it.
DoudouCow Happy belated birthday my dude
I know a few people that I could recommend it to since they’re fine with bad writing as long as it can still be enjoyable
Oh thanks Zoe..you must be a writer then...
Yes!!! It's my favorite show, and although they handled nearly every serious topic badly, they still had some wins and I appreciate that 😂
WHY DOES NO ONE TALK ABOUT WHEN MARLEY GOT ANOREXIA. everyone in glee club blamed HER for the loss at regionals and not kitty for actually giving her the ed. i didnt even notice how messed up this was til three months ago.
Sectionals. Although the fact that i know enough to correct you is kinda sad
Adrian Kesten ahahhaha good one 😂👍🏼
but Marley could choose not to vomit or stop eating. Yes it's partly Kitty's fault, she didn't use a gun and say 'marley I'm forcing u to not eat for these few months'.
AbbyBirthday as someone who has had an eating disorder i can tell you that, at least in my case, it’s not that simple.
@@chungleanne2690 yes, but she knew marley was vulnerable, and even if she didn't, she intentionally played with marley's mind with the intention of messing with her self image. kitty is massively at fault in the ed situation, and glee glossing over it was frustrating to watch
sue sylvester bring a hardcore barb is the most in character thing i’ve ever witnessed
just a small correction: artie actually wheeled /himself/ into the water. a moment that will live rent free in my head until i die
Yeah, cause same, i would too.
The biggest thing about Glee that always cracks me up, especially in the last seasons, is how people just fuckin come into the school unannounced to sing or some shit
Lol right
My high school had a pretty substantial drama department and budget. I can say from personal experience that we had alumni appear in the blackbox at random. You know, just before school shootings basically mandated visitor passes and on-site police officers at all times. They’d show up to sing or dance or act or waste time. Some of ‘em even tried to help us technicians and absolutely destroy our welds or test our platforms and flats for idiot proofing.
like, doesn't any of them have jobs?
Also her crush on Blaine was just weird and unnecessary in my opinion
thebloodfiend Jenna Ushkowitz deserves better
Tina's character disolvement from the end of season 3 is a symptom of Ryan Murphy being totally unable to write a shy/introverted character or a character with lower confidence and self esteem
nothing upsets me like rachel berry saying hunty, it still haunts me right up to this day
I said it since the beginning and ESPECIALLY after Rachel got into the college and Kurt didn't: Rachel and Schue are the worst characters in the show. It feels like the whole show was created specifically to buff up Lea Michelle's ego, and after the fights between the cast on twitter we can see that that was pretty much the exact case lmao
You seen her audition? That shit is ENTITLED
@@caitlinwheeler7915 omg I haven't. I need to look for that shit immediately
"You're trapped in an elevator...with a bathroom."
Gotta admit, that was actually pretty funny.
Not only does Frozen bring up Idina Menzel and that parallel universe, it also brings up Jonathan Groff and all of those parallel universe questions!
I thought of this too! Glad I wasn’t the only one.
@@amityislandchum So it's basically fuck Ryan Murphy again. Lea Michele might be talented but she exposed for bad behaviour last year.
more on ryan murphy reusing actors he likes- a lot of ahs, emma robert went from ahs to scream queens much like lea

Everything I needed tbh
Patrick Benson once he gets big, we can say that we were here first, and that's worth watching videos about terrible shows that we don't care about.
This makes me want to watch the show, just because of how insane it looks
Damn this comment just made me realize that I watched an hour long video analysis for a show I never watched
Ughh just watch Death Note Kwang Ho Hong singing.... jeeeshhhh.
i fully agree
“Stopped around season 4.” ME and just about every Glee fan I personally know. The first 3 seasons were magical, problematic sure, but it was magical. The writing, the acting, the Rachel we got from the pilot, Sue and Santana’s insults and one-liners, Brittany etc. I wish it never lost its magic.
And the new characters in season 4 were so unmemorable and unconsequential. I literally skipped the Lima scenes everytime I watched season 4 and 5.
Two different eras obviously but I still hate that stupid episode.
nononono not the writing...
@@bennyanderssonfanfic5952 I think they meant the writing was entertaining, after that it just became a drag

thats why its so funny now to me to see glee discourse cuz like.... we went thru it all years ago 😭it really was wild
You just unlocked the memory of me complaining all over LiveJournal whenever a new episode came out all season 3, don't think I finished Season 4
It was a very problematic show
Yesss they did Unique so dirty omggg
@@caitlinwheeler7915 the whole "new cast" from season 4 was screwed over big time
I always hated that they had unique refer to herself in the third person.
