I'm just starting to crochet, but this looks like a treble not a double per my workbook. What am I missing?

There is a stand-alone treble between the 'shells' as well as at the end of the 4th row.
This is a double in the USA

In European crochet, a double crochet is referred to as a single, and a treble as a double.
This isn’t the first time I have seen this called a double crochet Any of the how to books call it triple crochet!
She is not yarning over the hook twice as far as I can see. Isn’t a triple done by yarning over twice? I haven’t ever seen this either. I like the pattern.
It would have been easier to see 1 colour instead of variegated but quite effective nevertheless

I haven't seen this design either but wow!! Is it ever beautiful. Can you plz tell me the name of and brand name of your yarn? It's absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I have such bad arthritis in my right hand (and of course, I am right handed lol) so my being able to use that small of a hook and thread also, is just about impossible for me anymore. I made a table cloth for my mom over 20 years ago. You made one square at a time, and crocheting them together square by square. It REALLY was BEAUTIFUL. At the time, I was a night worker in a motel. I balanced the budget, mailed out bills... That sort of stuff. It was the smallest thread I could find with the smallest crochet hook I could find. It took me a year and two weeks to get it done. 8 foot long by 4 foot wide. She "did" have a BIG table like that. The last two weeks because the dry cleaners WASHED it instead of dry cleaned it. It shrunk a foot all the way around. I was simply crusted.
I sent it to my mom and she said it was beautiful but could I please make it SQUARE!!! I haven't worked with thread or crochet hook that size ever again. I have THOUGHT about it, for my daughter, but she doesn't seem very interested. Grrrrrrrrrrrr
It can be a bit hard to work out the differences in our stitches ... its not too bad to get the pattern while watching, i slow it down and write, but when following a written pattern, unless they write in brackets "UK what it is" can be a bit tricky .. im 🦘🇦🇺 and i need to follow UK stitches ..

I have never seen anyone hold their crochet hook with just the thumb and index finger. I usually hold mine the same way I hold a pencil, and sometimes end up with hand fatigue and soreness. Do you find holding it the way you do here is easier and less fatiguing?

I had to go back & review that with a magnifying glass because that was NOT a normal dc stitch!
