    WARNING: This video has currently been given a takedown notice, because TH-cam is really just a bot that allows other bots to make copyright claims/strikes unchecked. Anyone with eyes can see that I am correct in claiming Fair Use, and that this is a transformative piece that does not hinder the ability of the copyright holder to earn money on the movie Coraline. This has happened before and the threat disappeared without any notice given to me, but, if this strike continues to appear, this video will be mildly edited and uploaded again (although, then the bots just choose a different sections of the video to claim).
    Please be aware, this is a constant nightmare that content creators face. We are given a timestamp and a copyright claim and no real way to defend ourselves. In the case of this video, the first ~10 seconds of their 30 second claim are of images that I drew myself (ie this companies does NOT own the copyright for what they're claiming, yet they are allowed to claim whatever without any proof that they own it). TH-cam is an utter nightmare to create for and they only protect their mega stars while throwing the rest of us to the side. I'm incredibly frustrated right now, if you can't tell!

    If I recall there is a turtle shell in Coraline's real room, which makes me think it is a keep sake from a pet that passed away recently. So the turtle skeleton in the other bedroom would be like the Beldam being like look nothing dies here it's perfectly safe here. Maybe I'm wrong but that's just my take on the turtle

    You mentioned the story of Persephone eating the food of the underworld, and I wanted to mention that, according to legend, if one eats the food of the fairies, you shall be bound to their realm, or alternatively, you'll never crave human food again because it would taste awfull in comparison. As for wether the food is real or not... I suspect that the beldam placed an illusion over... less apetizing food, hence why she has the exact drink that Coraline was craving, it's probably just water or something, and the other mother is just making it look and taste like what Coraline wanted.

    As a Michigander by birth the friends aren’t talking nonsense. Swappers are knee high water proof boots, a tuke is a type of winter hat. Also, being referred to as “trolls” is an expression of those living in the lower (not Upper Peninsula) of the state. Those who live under the bridge like trolls in folklore.

    I have two answers as to why the Bell Dam didn't eat at the dinner table.
    First theory: Letting the other father eat the food helps Coroline feel comfortable around the dinner table. If they both weren't eating, it would look too susipcious.
    Second theory: I knew my mom often wouldn't want to eat what she put on the dinner table, because she often lost her appitate after laboring over the food. The Bell dam could just be disgusted by her own creation, which happens to a lot of artists in general.

  • @denisejeffries2675
    @denisejeffries2675 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

    Just to add a bit of real life examples to the dinner scene…
    My Grandmother rang a hand bell just like that at dinner after giving thanks to signify that it is time to begin the meal. The head of the table would always take the first bite of their meal before anyone else started eating. (As Coraline does) This person being the eldest male who provided the finances to purchase the food. Being either the grandfather or father. Further, my Grandmothers would be the last to begin eating. This being because she was always passing dishes around the table, asking if everyone liked it/needed anything, perhaps cutting up food on the plates of the younger children, and starting to engage in conversations. At large holiday meals I had even seen Grandmothers/Mothers not eat at the table. They served/talked/cleaned. Then when all was done they kicked up their feet in the kitchen and ate a plate of food in the peace and quiet. This isn’t every family, I know this. But there are families like this, I experienced several. Though I do not follow all this, some things I still do. The mango milkshake dispenser was very fantastical though lol!

      Yeah whenever I cook I kinda "fill up" before the foods even done. Partly from exposure to the smell for so long, but also taste testing. After hours on your feet and tasting it throughout the whole cooking process, you're usually no where near as excited to eat when it's finally done 😂 I always make my plate, put it away, and eat after everyone else has already finished theirs

  • @dominiknovosel883
    @dominiknovosel883 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +18

    I think I have a theory as to how Coraline's request for a mango milkshake could've been fulfilled on the spot, and how the Beldam prepared a multi-course meal in a matter of minutes. I'm a little rusty as to how the Beldam creates things in general, but I vaguely remember that the Other World kind of bends to her will. That being said, looking at the "drinkalier", we can see that the liquids it contains cover a good range of common "beverage colors", so when Coraline requests a mango milkshake, the Beldam could've simply altered the flavor and consistency of the orange liquid to match, without this change being visually perceptible. Had Coraline requested a strawberry, raspberry, blackcurrant or similar milkshake, the Beldam could've done the same with the pink liquid, or if Coraline was a hipster and requested an avocado-spinach-lime-artichoke detox smoothie or some other ungodly 💩, the Beldam could've altered the green liquid.
    Also, there is a not-insignificant disparity between the amount of food on the dining table and the amount of food we see the Beldam preparing in the kitchen. Since we've confirmed that the meal actually took place and satiated Coraline, and since we're trying to avoid assuming that the Beldam just wills everything into existence, we can instead posit that she has a supply of generic nutrient-rich material that she then transforms into various foods, much like she does with the drinks. However, she would also have had to alter the food visually, and shooed Coraline upstairs to meet the Other Father so she could finish haphazardly magicking the meal together. For all we know, the food she was cooking when Coraline first came into the kitchen could've been fake, as the Beldam just needed to put on a charade so that Coraline wouldn't question where all this food suddenly came from.

    Great video. I agree with other commenters that the Other Father most likely doesn't NEED to eat. However, with the Other Father eating, it might also be to reassure Coraline that the food is good/safe. It's one thing for the mom not to eat when she's making sure the kid has everything she wants first, but if both parents aren't eating and at just 'watching' their daughter eat, that might make Coraline second guess if she should.
    At 7:43 at the dinner table from Coraline's pov, we see the father's plate, but the Other mother's is kind of hidden behind the massive turkey so don't think Caroline always has a clear shot of what the other mother is doing vs the dad she can see clearly. Just a thought and I agree the mud most likely had some sedative or something otherwise I could see Coraline getting up and trying to return to the tunnel.
    Again great job on the video and looking forward to more.

      Absolutely. It was a tactical decision to have the Other Father eat to normalize the scene. Not only then, but throughout the film I see the Other Father as the one Coraline is more comfortable with. She laughs/smiles with him in other scenes.

    Something I don’t think anyone has talked about yet is how about 300ish years ago Native Americans came up with something called “The Three Sisters” technique which is essentially where corn, beans and pumpkins (or squash) grow and compliment each other. Corn is what the other father was eating which may be because he doesn’t yet know the other mother’s true intentions - potentially foreshadowing for later about him being a pumpkin - corn provides climbing support for the beans, then according to an article by FoodQuests interviewing Neil Gaiman (the author of Coraline) “Coraline simply refuses to ingest those oval, bright green legumes.” This could suggest she hasn’t quite grow up yet, not only in her tastes but her child-like point of view, beans also helps the growth of the other two crops and fix nitrogen for them too. However, as she isn’t “grown up” yet, she refuses to allow them to “grow” at this moment in time. Pumpkin - aka the other father, shade the soil (maybe to protect Coraline?) then eventually help with bean pollination - like the other father tries to help Coraline towards the end, they also establish large leaves to block out weed growth. The weeds could be the other mother trying to kill them off but is unsuccessful due to the other father “blocking her” by going his own way.
    I really don’t know if any of that makes any sense but hopefully it’s something that someone can word better than me.
    Absolutely loving this series Megan! Always makes my Saturdays watching this. Lots of love Beth. 🥰

    I thought that the other father eating was to make the dinner scene seem more normal. Like, the other mother doesnt eat, she just watches Coraline, but the other father is eating. If i were Coraline (who is already suspicious) I would feel uncomfortable and paranoid if people were watching me eat, and if im the only one eating, hence the other father is eating. Thats how i thought of it. He might not need food to survive, it might just be part of their facade.

    Could the fact that Coraline is from a new age, where children are encuraged to speak their mind, be the reason why the other mother is at a loss for answers? If the other childres simply saw the other mother as an adult and were taught not to question adults, the other mother might not have had the need to prepare for answers about the other world to this degree

    Something I noticed during the transitioning back to the 'real world' bedroom, is that, there's an object on the box where the Other Father was sitting, I can't tell what it is, but its round in shape with a warmish color that almost reminds me of a pumpkin, and since the Other Father is later revealed to have been a pumpkin, I feel like its another foreshadowing moment of his true nature! Just thought you'd want to know!

    I dont think other mother is usually kind. to only to the children. And since the other father is just a creation and her servant, i dont think he usually has the opportunity to be happy. And delicious food gives you serotonin. So he wants to eat for the joy of eating delicious food. Not because he needs it for nutrition. Later on he stacks his plate as well because this is a very rare, blessed treat he gets to have.

    I tho the other father doesn’t NEED to eat but he does because it’s the whim of the bedlam. In some ways, coralline seeing the other father actually eat food that the other mother made kinda contradicts what happens in real world. “ why don’t you ever cook mum?” “ coralline we’ve been over this before; your father cooks, I clean & you stay out of the way “. It also helps that seeing coralline reject the food real dad makes yet eats food from other mother because other dad eats it. This is also some foreshadowing as to when other wybie enters” oh, the wybie that talks”, she dislikes wybie so other mother fixed him.

    I too got the vibe of once Coraline ate the food, you’re stuck there much like how in the greek myth for Persephone she ate 6 pomegranate seeds. An interesting detail from that myth is if you eat any food from the underworld you can not leave. Hades specifically allowed Persephone to stay with her mother for the amount of months correlating to the amount of pomegranate seeds she ate (which was six) which is the Greek’s myth of the changing seasons. But because of that myth, combining that with the theory that Coraline never actually left the other world, I’m wondering if she had trapped her self there from the start because she ate the food. Now yes we do see her wake up in her world twice however, another theory is she never went back, and it was actually her just going into a pocket dimension. Again this is just a theory but an interesting detail I just thought of while watching this video.

    Hey megane, i was thinking and there's no way the food in the other world can be real. We saw when Coraline was walking in the other world that the world is incredibly small and there were no animals walking around other than the cat and the jumping mice. We also see that the cheese is real because Coraline left the cheese for the mice and they took it to the other mother. I think the only way food can make it's way to the other world is through the door. So unless a turkey and all of those other food items were taken through the tunnel (highly doubtful) the food must be something else that has some sort of magical spell cast over it to make the food look appealing when it in fact, isn't.

    4:50 So two things and a story here. 1 I am religous but tbh I find praying before the meal and being thankful for the food honest to goodness makes the food taste better. Something I've said to people who aren't religious/atheist is still say thx to the farmers etc who made the food (including the parent/child who cooked it) as I promise it makes the food taste better. Anyway on to the bell question. That tiny dinner bell is probably a servant bell. I think in the book the Beldam uses the bell to call the rats who act as her servants but in the movie I think they forgot the rats. Traditionally in rich families the Matoron (the woman of the house ie the master's wife) would ring the tiny dinner bell to tell the servants that the family is ready for the next course when dinners would often be multi coursed. Since the beldam has a dinner bell this would suggest that she is implying she's rich which is interesting since Coraline quite clearly comes from a poor family given the food situation which imo would raise my suspcions. ANd a fun little dinner prayer story. When I was a kid my dad was a pastor so we said grace before every dinner and whenever we had an important lunch or breakfast such as Christmas brunch or on weekeneds we said grace before eating lunch. Anyway so I was eating at a restaurant with my friend who was a Christian but his parents leaned toward agnostic/atheism but liked me because I was well mannered. So as the food comes I immediately start saying grace just out of habit and they have that "wait were we suppose to wait" look of food halfway to their mouth and I said "sorry I forgot u guys don't typically say grace" my friend's mom says "Oh its fine I should've sasked if u would like to say the grace." Every time after when I was at their house over dinner she would ask me to say grace.

    About the food coraline eats. It may be a case of the other mother taking what she has, and making it look and feel like something else. Like with the mice who are really rats, this 'food' may be something barely eateble, simply dressed up as mango milkshakes and turkey. That also explains why the mango milkshake is already there for Coraline, since the other mother did not have to make it, but rather decide it should be there in the moment.

      I think most things in the Other World are created to look a bit fantastical. Thus the elaborate meal and big bird. Though to be fair, years ago we agreed to raise/rescue (not eat) a few Langshan roosters for a neighbor who was moving. Those birds are HUGE. Gentle giants. People often came to ask about them because they were so impressive.

    I never really questioned why coraline has to physically go through a tunnel to get to the other world, but here we are seeing her transport to the real world when she falls asleep. If that were the case then why didn't she transport back to the real world right after the beldam offered her to sew buttons into her eyes? Something is not quite right here because she did fall asleep that time as well but somehow didn't go back to her real room! The fact that the beldam has intense control over everything is so unsettling because it means she created many versions of the real world to fool coraline and let her believe she could ever get back to the real world after her first visit.

The Theoriser made a point about this. Also, the beldam wants children to trust and love her- so maybe the teleportation was real and back to the real world. Maybe the movie takes place over several months, explaining the seasonal and room changes. Coraline's hair isn't necessarily dyed, it could just be a wig. • @soulight6091
      @soulight6091 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think she's too young of a protagonist to be given a Mary Sue lable, as more developed flaws happen later in life. In addition it's a film that targets a younger audiance with a focus more so on the adventure and less about what makes Coraline a human being, so I can forgive the film for not expanding on her character. Sometimes you have to sacrifice character in favor of world building, otherwise the story becomes too bloated.

    • @PancakeRights
      @PancakeRights 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@denisejeffries2675 Mary Sue has four indicators
      1) Tragic backstory
      Coraline has moved, left her home, seems to have neglectful and strict parents and is a lonely, rebellious child- signalling she had a strict upbringing.
      2) Make other characters look like trash in comparison.
      Coraline insults and to the naked eye, looks smarter than characters like Wybie, even fooling the Beldam at the end of the movie. But the cat helps her get out of her state of loving the other world and she realises Wybie isn't dumb at the end of the movie. So 50/50.
      3) Always right and make the correct decision
      Coraline is the first of the kidnapped children to not allow the button eyes and to successfully escape and trick the Beldam. She makes the right decisions towards the end of the film, with her initial wrong decisions being mistreating Wybie, taking her parents for granted and trusting the other parents. But she is the most clever of the kidnapped children at just 11 and seeing as she doesn't have good parents this is unlikely. So it is 50/50 when it comes to make her a Mary Sue.
      4) Essentially perfect.
      Coraline does not at all meet this final category for Mary Sue. She's not perfect. She has her flaws towards the start of the movie and has a sad life, no friends, no school, doesn't live in a nice place, bad parents. So 0% on this one.
      CONCLUSION: Mary Sue is a character that is unrealistically perfect and doesn't face permenant consequences, always being right. For an 11 year old girl, Coraline seems to be handling this move better than a lot of other children. Even though she's stressed, her level of stress is very low compared to her parent's neglect, attitude and disgusting food at home. She also doesn't agree to buttons and fools the Beldam, freeing the ghost children single handedly. At the end, she didn't face consequences as she escaped and ended the Beldam, freeing the ghost children, didn't even get fooled and now has loving parents, loving neighbours and made a new friend so easily- who just happened to save her at coincidentally the right time and instantly forgive her- major Mary Sue moment.
      In conclusion: Yes. Coraline is a Mary Sue overall as her character is unrealistic for her age and she doesn't get fooled easily or have permenant consequences, which doesn't make sense for her age and backstory. She's always saved in one way or the other, either by Wybie or the cat which are major Mary Sue moments.

      @PancakeRights 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@denisejeffries2675 The other mother isn't a Mary Sue at all, we don't see a tragic backstory. In fact, she has a positive backstory (in her perspective) having successfully kidnapped and ripped the souls of three children. She has clear flaws and is portrayed as bad, her character being realistic. She is very clever when manipulating Coraline. She also faces permenant consequences as she doesn't fool her victim, her hand is cut off and she eventually dies. The theoriser has a lot of videos, check them out for sure. But in conclusion, the other mother isn't essentially perfect, had a tragic backstory, nor does she do everything right or not face consequences, she faces the most severe consequences, so not a Mary Sue at all.

    About the other father eating. Could it maybe be because he wants fo feel and taste, not because he needs it. In spirited away there is a moment where a creature with its mouth sewn shut gets to open it for a while, and it eats like crazy for the moments it has, before its mouth shuts again, but more so in the way that i craves the tasting sensations and so on. My point is that the other father knows he might turn back into a pumpkin or something inanimate, so he is just taking his chances while he can and eats while he has an actual mouth.

    of note, regarding the other-mother being [at least seemingly] ill prepared for cautious!coraline; it's been quite some time since her last child acquisition, the last one was potentially fairly easy [or at least was able to pick the easier of the two options], and kids are getting more and more snarky/paranoid as time goes on so it's not that weird to not expect to have to argue that yes there are just other sets of parents waiting to dote on children or whatever. even with children of old being warned from a young age to distrust magical beings professing adoration or whatever they'd not be told to look out for the same signs coraline would be viewing as red flags. Food for thought

The more i think about it sure shes fattening up her like any animal to the slaughter just like them spiders with them rodents from the future is wild animated TV series from discovery kids and yes there was an animated series to that beloved speculating nature documentary...
    Unfortunately again wonder were i got the idea if you seen the episode of teen titans go with the multiple ravens and after pink raven was captured cyborg and beast boy had a hallucinations of happy world and after pink ravens capture they were seen eating garbage...
    Now again idk if the food was actual food or not in the film im just a fan of this film speculating...
    Now of course you can believe alot like Hansel and Gretel story the beldam aka the other mother is a witch of some kind and like the the 2 kids in that story eating candy shes just fattening her up...
    But then again alot like in blade trinity or if you want to get more recent resident evil 8 im sure you know which scenes i mean... maybe with the food its adding flavor to her so she dont taste bland...

    If you look at the direction the cameo's are facing around 15:37... it looks more like to me that a male and female figure are looking at the reflected (reverse-side facing) image of a child (rather than three potential previous-victims). I'd think maybe this is alluding to the fact that the two worlds are paralleled (the other-mothers' world and the "real world")-- which still works even if there are levels to the the 'other world'.
