I was intimidated by the weight score of this game, so I was on the fence about getting it, but now that you've done a tutorial and playthrough, I know I'll be able to manage. Thank you!
You are really the best to explain complex games !! Going though a couple tutorials on Brass Lancashire…and yours stands out as really good to follow and digest ! So well done !
27:09 The shipyards in all three locations can be built in the Canal Era (first half of the game). Two of them just require that you build there using the corresponding location card.
At 29:22, I believe the white canal boat would score one point for the flipped iron works in Manchester. At least that's the way it would work in Brass Birmingham.
Yay I love this game but never go back to it because it’s a little rules heavy and I’d have to relearn it to teach it. Now I have this video to go back to as a refresher!
I picked up a Deluxe copy of this thanks to your glowing impressions and excellent tutorial. Speaking of deluxe, how much joy do those iron clays spark!
Hey Jon! Great video for a great game! Always love watching these even when I've already played the game a bunch! Nevermind about my rules error I mentioned and edited out here! I have been playing wrong! Thanks again for all your superb work!
I enjoy Birmingham as well, but I decided I wanted to own just one Brass and went with Lancashire specifically because it has a much lower rules overhead and it's a smoother experience.
@@dsweet5273 beer is a clunky addition to Birmingham that bogs the game without adding much enjoyability. The variable port locations add more replayability but also add negative randomness in that you can be royally screwed from the start. Plus birmingham also has numerous industries where higher tier buildings are worse than lower tier buildings forcing you to build crap or spend time developing. None of this unnecessary unfun bloat exists in Lancashire.
Shoitaan huh... I have never really had any issue with the things you mentioned. Beer feels fine and in fact I felt an extra dimension to the game that felt interesting. Almost all the industry tiles DO get better in terms of Point value. Yes m. Goods and pottery fluctuate... but that just gives you another opportunity to make efficient use of the develop action. Even some industry tiles which seem bad can be used effectively. Like the m.goods tiles that give sub-par rewards but cost no beer and have no link points. Putting those in a location an opponent has invested a lot of links into can easily deprive them of a lot of points. I love the randomized ports and have never seen anyone screwed by this. I guess agree to disagree? I love both games and will play either one when given the chance.
Wow that's a frustrating mistake to make, thanks for pointing that out. I'm particularly annoyed that this happened in the tutorial where I am teaching vs playing, sorry for the confusion here.
Hi, excellent tutorial!!! Have a pair of questions (sorry for My English) 1.- at the canal era, when the deck tile (Stephenson rocket) appears, can i still making Loan actions? 2.- at the Rail era, it is possible build two of the same industry in one location (i.e. 2 cotton Mills at Stockport owned by just one player) ? Thanks in advance
My question is though if you have to spend iron when buying the locked shipyards? Doesnt the left corner on the player mat indicate that you just have to spend your money on them (edit: waste your action moves to remove them from the mat 26:20)? Thx
So when Developing which is basically Upgrading, what to we do with the tiles we removed from the Player Mat? I assume they can be returned to the box since they are never used but the manual does not say. Also, doesn't Developing a tile mean you will never receive points for it since it will never make it to the board?
When you develop, the tiles are simply removed from the game in any way that makes sense for you. Yes, you have no way to gain the VP for a tile once you develop it away.
Are the Brass games some of your favorites still? I saw your video a while back saying you had gotten bit by the Brass bug (back in 2018 I think) and thought about the games all the time. That still the case? Also, which Brass game do you prefer?
I do still enjoy them, though I'm not thinking about them constantly now :) I think I prefer Birmingham, that is also the version I decided to add to my collection.
Maybe I'm wrong, since I never played the game, but the example You made for scoring, at 29:23 is inconsistent with the example You did at 29:05 where the industry tile is at the other side of the city. For clarity, do You score for every link icon in the city, no matter who owns it and THE PART OF CITY THEY ARE ON , or they must be directly adiacent to where the canal/rail meet the city ? ( then in the example at 29:23, 1 point not zero, is scored ). Thank You
I did indeed show this wrong and I have a correction to explain this in the Klingon subtitles. I do my best to catch mistakes like this before I post the video but I do miss some so it's a good idea to watch with the Klingon subtitles on.
CORRECTIONS:
27:09 - You can build shipyards in these locations if you use that location's card to do so.
By far the best Brass playthrough I have seen. Very clear instructions. The pace is perfect for me. You’re a superb teacher!
Thanks!
I got addicted to this series 'Tutorial & Playthrough'

Good point, I've added a correction. Thanks for pointing that out.
Just found your channel and I'm amazed how cristal clear you explain the rules, and are able to play with 3 yourself players at the same time!
Thanks :) Glad you enjoyed it.

Yep, it looks like I had a goneheaded moment here. I've added a note to the Klingon subtitles about this one now, thanks for pointing it out.
Dang it! Literally just spent 4 hours on Heavy Cardboard's Birmingham teach and play through... Here goes another couple of hours for yours!
Thank you so much! This is THE very best tutorial on Brass: Lancashire I've seen...very comprehensive, detailed and easy to understand!
Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you found this useful :)

It's Old'um, not Old'am ;)

In my version of the game the rules do specify that all market trade icons are a connection to the coal market, including the port tiles.
Ooo, and when you use the port as a connection to markets (coal market or foreign cottonmarket) the port tile doesn't flip.
I believe this is corrected in the Klingon subtitles already.
One of my favourite games! Such a smoother experience compared to Birmingham. I'm glad to see Lancashire getting some love.

Shoitaan how is it smoother?

Excellent tutorial, so glad you made it
Thanks for a very informative video, it’s made this awesome game a whole less daunting 👍🏻
At 29:21, isn't the boat worth 1 due to the yellow iron building's single link icon?
Wow that's a frustrating mistake to make, thanks for pointing that out. I'm particularly annoyed that this happened in the tutorial where I am teaching vs playing, sorry for the confusion here.

Great tutorial. It now feels like you have to do Brass: Birmingham for the comparison. ;)
Hehe, well I don't own that one (have played a few times though).
24:35 You can actually buy (and sell) coal from ports! It is not just for cotton. Page 8, Consuming Coal, point 2 in the rule book.
Oops, dang yeah I got that one quite wrong. I've added a note about this to the Klingon subtitles.

@@pirecrompir Ha, yeah your correct I had a brainfart. I meant Lancashire is my favorite, sorry about that!
Thank you for the tutorial. At the end of the canal era are level 1 ports and shipyards also removed from the board?
Yes, all level 1 buildings are removed.
@@JonGetsGames thank you for the reply
When the Distant Market Marker reaches the "X" at the bottom, how does it reset to back to the top? I don't understand.
It doesn't move again, it says on the X for the rest of the game and players can no longer ship to distant markets.
It's been 6 years and 3 months and you finally played a game worth buying.
Great playthrough as always.
