You can play TS online again when downloading it from C&CNet5. You can't play missions when you did but you can make your own maps. ( if you want to map and you don't know how to get the pack )

After came red alert 2 and those were the last two epic strategy games ive enjoyed (maybe Age of empires as well). I still have tiberian sun and red alert 2 which i play occasionally . Ive downloaded age of aggression last night and ill give that a try.

RainintheBrain I know that feel of dissapointment when I read Ensemble Studios went out of the business. I had the little hope that they would came out with another expansion including aztecs and chinese/japanese (any of them having enough mythology to take units and stuff). Although I love Age of Empires saga as well, I would have put AOM instead of AOE because (and as very personal opinion) AOM had a bigger impact when it came out because 1-Greek, egyptian, nordic and atlantean civilizations 2-Great graphics for those times and 3-Hell yeah legendary monsters and mighty heroes as units!

I am very surprised that no one talks about Command & Conquer: zero hour or Cossacks European Wars. Those two games are by far the best without contest in my opinion. ( and I’ve played a lot of strategy games )

You know I did not even pay attention that it was no more westwood that developed RA3, but I finally found with this video why I bought RA3, played two missions and stopped there to go back to RA1 & 2. RA 1, too good, the RTS of my kid days, too much nostalgia I cannot handle it. and then RA 2, also so damn good. Yuri's revenge was cool too.
I really think the first StarCraft should be #1, It spawned eSports and revolutionized gaming as a whole. The scene wouldn't be what it is today without it.
DUNE II defined the genre. I played it again more than 10 years later, and with its old graphics and one by one unit movements, it was still epic to play. This game became cult. Westwood Studios created RTS. EA bought the genre and fucked it up.
It was fun especially for it being one of the few strategy games on the 360, and what got me into PC gaming. But the E3 trailers for it were far better than what we we're presented with, there would have been alot more freedom to the player.
I never believe the E3 trailers knowing that all they do is try to hype you up into buying the game. I look at game play trailers a few months before the game comes out to see if I still want to buy it.
I actually started playing Supreme Commander and I have to say that such a large map and so many units to take control of is pretty challenging for me. But I'm enjoying it.
AoE II and C&C Red Alert have a special place in my heart. I also had some fun with planetary annihilation titans. I might have to try Starcraft one day..

This list needed: Stronghold (+crusaders expansion), Star Wars Empire at War and World in Conflict I would have replaced Shogun 2 with the original Rome Total War, because that game was the one that got the franchise really popular

I think Command and conquer RA2:Yuri was and is amazing. I wish that they would remaster it. I also think its contribution to later titles, like battlefield, should be mentioned. since if you play the campaign stories of those games.. you find very eerily similar tech being worked on by the bad guys ^.^
I think Warcraft 3 is the greatest real time strategy game of all time it had such a large impact on competitive gaming like WCG, and custom maps like DotA that have become more famous for games like League of Legends, HoN, Dota 2 would not be around if it wasn't for Warcraft 3.
Originally I was going to flip if WC3 wasn't at least #2 (saw SC2 coming from miles away), because I've said for years that it's still the best and most significant RTS ever made, but IMO...strictly as an RTS, it has its flaws. The RPG elements are really the thing that save it and make it such an amazing game, but then you have to ask, where do you draw the line? How much credit can you give the non-RTS elements and still rank it as an RTS? That being said, don't get me wrong, it still deserves to be on this list and high up at that, but I can sort of understand why other things succeeded it.
Turnt SNACO I don't. The hero element in Warcraft 3 including the leveling, creeping, choosing hero abilities, using items.. that's what makes Warcraft 3 stand out above the rest. It's so much more complex and fun than SC2, it just leaves room for so much creativity that SC2 just doesn't. Warcraft 3 to me is one of the best games ever made. period

***** They put Red Alert 2 infront because RA2 and its expansion (Yuri's Revenge) are members of the "Hall of fame" of the gaming industry. It is one of the best games ever made. It was the Westwood's masterpiece then they ware sold to EA (the most sad moment of the industry because they destroyed them) and Generals is EA creation. The only good RTS games that EA made are Generals 1 + Zero Hour and C&C 3 Tiberium wars + KW exp. Then they ruined everything. First was that disgrace Red Alert 3 , then was that sacrilege C&C 4 Tiberium Twilight and the ultimate offence to the series of C&C (Generals 2) - thank God they cancel it because it was major offence to every fan of C&C. Now typical for EA - they killed C&C forever. ;(

yeah, well.. since they say they only consider 1 game as a representative of a series and they used supcom to represent the "TA into supcom"-series, it is kind of on the list. now you could of course still argue 2 things, tho: 1. does this "series" even exist like that? or shouldnt TA be regarded seperately? 2. IF this series exists, shouldnt TA be the one representing it? since then it wouldve easily made #2 on the list. for some other series its debatable which installment is actually the best as well, like C&C, TW, BfME, yet choosing a different title as a representative there wouldnt drastically change the spot the series takes on the list, like it does with TA, imo. i would even argue TA taking the #1 spot together with starcraft if we disregard the eSports factor. but with eSports included SC takes it hands down obviously
erbgorre i agree esport definately boosted SC2 to the top but TA should be either its own entry or the mentioned entry in the TA-Supcom line. tbh Im not even sure how they really conclude that supcom is the same. It had the same guy in charge thats all, and "commander" units. Beyond that they are different entirely. TA has been rocking now with a strong mod base and continued community for almost 2 decades, what other rts community from the mid 90's is still active?
Oh come on... you don't have the greatest classic of them all? Empire Earth 1, which was the first strategy game ever to go from the stone age to the future, all in real time. I still play it, and my pc can handle all the new games, so that says a lot.

100% agree with you, I played K&M first time in 1998 when i have only P-1 with 32mb ram with 1mb buildin graphics. but they forget the Settlers 6 Rise on an Empire and StrongHold Crusader.
Nah, Brood War was great, and for its time might have been more innovative than SC2, but SC2 is a clear improvement. They took Brood War and made it better, and there's no reason to go back at this point.
SC2 made everything too easy, it threw off the balance of macro vs micro. In terms of a competitive esport, brood war was better in my opinion. But then again they did say no expansions were considered, so i think that's why they gave SC2 WoL the spot
ishboh Well LotV put a lot more focus back on micro, and made it harder in my opinion. Even if you're right about BW being more balanced for eSports, SC2 is more fun to play and a lot more fun to watch. I don't want to go back to the old graphics and more limited units.
So SC1 and brood wars were excellent games. The reason that 2 took the spot was because not only were all the old fans coming back but it almost quadrupled in popularity with the newer and younger gamers.
Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour. And the mod for it called Retarted, its a great little mod and I highly recommend everyone play it at least once. I play as laser general and no airforce can get into my base when i have lasers around.
yiss, then chinese tank general has a giant tank, called the gunther. Get a nuke missile silo and buy the tank upgrades, its the fastest tank in the game and the most powerful
Supcom FA on FAF. Is the greatest RTS ever made, everyone else please sit down. Nothing like the #8 supreme commander on this list. Nothing like supcom 2. Too difficult for the average gamer to even begin to comprehend the game.
starcraft is simple game but it takes a lot of concentration which i don'd have most of the time since im not that young and healthy anymore but supreme commander is more like life itself... it's nearly impossible to make a perfect play since there are a lot of variables and the element of imagination and invention plays bigger role than in starcraft.

If you wanted a tactical WW2 RTS without the realism of Combat Mission, it didn't get any better than Blitzkrieg for quite some time since its release in 2003. Not to mention the amount of add-ons and the hardcore Stalingrad built on the same engine. There's also Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, which had amazing graphics and let you directly control any unit (which had its own inventory). Shame all of those great games were mostly unknown west of Poland. Also, not including Stronghold? Repent!
I'd say COH still has the edge on the blitzkrieg and soldiers series. It has a certain elegance in it's design that the latter two lack. COH feels much more streamlined and immersive, while blitzkrieg and MOW/Soldiers always felt a bit too cluncky for me to really get into it.
Well, COH is still built around resources and production, even though it's as close to a tactical RTS as it gets in that format. And I honestly don't see how Blitzkrieg could have been more streamlined, it's basically some units and some supply depots with an aviation support button. As for Soldiers, it's clunkiness was actually part of its charm to me. I mean, come on! You can even siphon fuel from destroyed enemy tanks!
Command and Conquer and StarCraft were the games I grew up with 30 years ago. I played all the originals then, and I still do today. They don't make games like they used to anymore.
i personally loved both of the games. maybe they weren't big competitive attractions like starcraft or age of empires, but they were still really awesome games. on a side note: i was REALLY dissappointed when i wanted to play the multiplayer of the first game last year and realized ea had the servers shut down. :(

It was fun especially for it being one of the few strategy games on the 360, and what got me into PC gaming. But the E3 trailers for it were far better than what we we're presented with, there would have been alot more freedom to the player.
I never believe the E3 trailers knowing that all they do is try to hype you up into buying the game. I look at game play trailers a few months before the game comes out to see if I still want to buy it.

I actually started playing Supreme Commander and I have to say that such a large map and so many units to take control of is pretty challenging for me. But I'm enjoying it.

I think Command and conquer RA2:Yuri was and is amazing. I wish that they would remaster it. I also think its contribution to later titles, like battlefield, should be mentioned. since if you play the campaign stories of those games.. you find very eerily similar tech being worked on by the bad guys ^.^

I think Warcraft 3 is the greatest real time strategy game of all time it had such a large impact on competitive gaming like WCG, and custom maps like DotA that have become more famous for games like League of Legends, HoN, Dota 2 would not be around if it wasn't for Warcraft 3.
Originally I was going to flip if WC3 wasn't at least #2 (saw SC2 coming from miles away), because I've said for years that it's still the best and most significant RTS ever made, but IMO...strictly as an RTS, it has its flaws. The RPG elements are really the thing that save it and make it such an amazing game, but then you have to ask, where do you draw the line? How much credit can you give the non-RTS elements and still rank it as an RTS? That being said, don't get me wrong, it still deserves to be on this list and high up at that, but I can sort of understand why other things succeeded it.
Turnt SNACO I don't. The hero element in Warcraft 3 including the leveling, creeping, choosing hero abilities, using items.. that's what makes Warcraft 3 stand out above the rest. It's so much more complex and fun than SC2, it just leaves room for so much creativity that SC2 just doesn't. Warcraft 3 to me is one of the best games ever made. period

***** They put Red Alert 2 infront because RA2 and its expansion (Yuri's Revenge) are members of the "Hall of fame" of the gaming industry. It is one of the best games ever made. It was the Westwood's masterpiece then they ware sold to EA (the most sad moment of the industry because they destroyed them) and Generals is EA creation. The only good RTS games that EA made are Generals 1 + Zero Hour and C&C 3 Tiberium wars + KW exp. Then they ruined everything. First was that disgrace Red Alert 3 , then was that sacrilege C&C 4 Tiberium Twilight and the ultimate offence to the series of C&C (Generals 2) - thank God they cancel it because it was major offence to every fan of C&C. Now typical for EA - they killed C&C forever. ;(

Well, Supreme Commander is in it which they mentioned is a spiritual succesor to Total Annihilation.
yeah, well.. since they say they only consider 1 game as a representative of a series and they used supcom to represent the "TA into supcom"-series, it is kind of on the list.
now you could of course still argue 2 things, tho:
1. does this "series" even exist like that? or shouldnt TA be regarded seperately?
2. IF this series exists, shouldnt TA be the one representing it? since then it wouldve easily made #2 on the list. for some other series its debatable which installment is actually the best as well, like C&C, TW, BfME, yet choosing a different title as a representative there wouldnt drastically change the spot the series takes on the list, like it does with TA, imo. i would even argue TA taking the #1 spot together with starcraft if we disregard the eSports factor. but with eSports included SC takes it hands down obviously

It had the same guy in charge thats all, and "commander" units. Beyond that they are different entirely.

Nah, Brood War was great, and for its time might have been more innovative than SC2, but SC2 is a clear improvement. They took Brood War and made it better, and there's no reason to go back at this point.
SC2 made everything too easy, it threw off the balance of macro vs micro. In terms of a competitive esport, brood war was better in my opinion.
But then again they did say no expansions were considered, so i think that's why they gave SC2 WoL the spot

Well LotV put a lot more focus back on micro, and made it harder in my opinion. Even if you're right about BW being more balanced for eSports, SC2 is more fun to play and a lot more fun to watch. I don't want to go back to the old graphics and more limited units.

So SC1 and brood wars were excellent games. The reason that 2 took the spot was because not only were all the old fans coming back but it almost quadrupled in popularity with the newer and younger gamers.

I still have it and now it's available for free in Blizzard or you can buy the stupid rematered version.

Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour. And the mod for it called Retarted, its a great little mod and I highly recommend everyone play it at least once. I play as laser general and no airforce can get into my base when i have lasers around.

However the more learning you do, the more freedom you have.
starcraft is simple game but it takes a lot of concentration which i don'd have most of the time since im not that young and healthy anymore but supreme commander is more like life itself... it's nearly impossible to make a perfect play since there are a lot of variables and the element of imagination and invention plays bigger role than in starcraft.
Lol I got into supreme commander at the age of 13 and was able to complete its campaign over and over on hard, however I never played online.
Rise of Nations and Age of Empires are the best with lots of replay values. I must have spend hundred of hours with these two games.

If you wanted a tactical WW2 RTS without the realism of Combat Mission, it didn't get any better than Blitzkrieg for quite some time since its release in 2003. Not to mention the amount of add-ons and the hardcore Stalingrad built on the same engine. There's also Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, which had amazing graphics and let you directly control any unit (which had its own inventory). Shame all of those great games were mostly unknown west of Poland.

Eh, a good WW2 RTS was MoWAS, even tho not best story/campaign, it had very enjoyable gameplay.
MoW was essentially a more arcadey and action-oriented Soldiers game, it's part of the same series.
I'd say COH still has the edge on the blitzkrieg and soldiers series. It has a certain elegance in it's design that the latter two lack. COH feels much more streamlined and immersive, while blitzkrieg and MOW/Soldiers always felt a bit too cluncky for me to really get into it.
Well, COH is still built around resources and production, even though it's as close to a tactical RTS as it gets in that format. And I honestly don't see how Blitzkrieg could have been more streamlined, it's basically some units and some supply depots with an aviation support button. As for Soldiers, it's clunkiness was actually part of its charm to me. I mean, come on! You can even siphon fuel from destroyed enemy tanks!
Command and Conquer and StarCraft were the games I grew up with 30 years ago. I played all the originals then, and I still do today. They don't make games like they used to anymore.
The Lord of the Rings: Battle for middle earth 2 should really be on the list, not just as an honorable mention..
