Poor baby poor mother. It's hard watching animals especially babies pass away crying 😭😭😭😢😭
It is interesting to learn how particular rhinos are about a potential mate. And I didn't know they often lock into bloodshed upon meeting! Thank you for teaching me more about the animal kingdom. :-)
For creatures that can't talk, they show more humanity than most of us ever will.

Update, these are clips from secrete life of the zoo, this episode was from years ago, I believe she did have baby rhino's that were healthy!
Of course she's going to keep looking for her little one if they took it away and she's not seen it since. Like any mother she should have been able to grieve over her dead baby. My heart aches for this mumma, I hope she's been able to have another little one in time 💙🇦🇺
The more I watch these the more it becomes obvious how much of "business" is in zoos. Soo sad.
@@DuneDemon8 The baby died from a birth defect, thats not really the fault of the zoo
@@lozpopo I was not commenting on whos fault it is but how everything is done like they are in a factory. And I understand protocols also, i worked in wild animal rescue. But you also have to have some respect that animals have emotions too, can develop traumas etc.

Poor Kitani, no parent should have to experience the loss of a child. Unfortunately there is nothing keepers can do about a birth defect 😢! 🤞For Kitani to heal!💖🦏💖
Would she accept an orphan baby rhino or do they only accept their own offspring??
Where is the next part? I wanna know if the mommy rhino will be fine.

Imagine being a male rhino in captivity. You hang around eating and drinking and then at random intervals you're put in a cage with a woman and expected to have sex.
You should have let her see her deceased baby. You have condemned her to never knowing but always hoping. Look what human parents go through when a child disappears. At some point parents start saying, "I just wish we knew for certain what happened to our child." No matter how many years go by, they just want to and need to know.
I wonder if the keepers let Kitani hold and snuggle the dead calf. I wonder if that would have helped her mourn and grieve (and say goodbye to) her tiny calf.
That was the first thing I thought of too. It's the same with pets, you need to let them see the other one has died so they don't think it's missing somehow and go through the normal grieving process.

Who wouldn't be depressed. Her baby is missing because they took it so that wouldn't give her time to grieve. And now they're trying to mate her so she'd go pregnant again? I'm always baffled by what Humans can do

I really hope this works out for Katani. If she were an animal I was familiar with I would suggest giving her a friend, but Rhinos don't really like that. I hope she is able to have another baby. Have they tested her to see if the heart problem was in her genetics? It would be heart breaking for the same thing to happen to the next baby.
If it's anything like with humans, it was completely random. My son has a congenital heart defect (he is 4 yrs old now) and if the pediatrician hadn't noticed it in form of a murmur when she did his very first checkup, I don't want to think about the consequences. He has to be monitored every couple of months now. He has pulmonary valve stenosis. When he was 2 months old they had to intervene and do something called a balloon valvuloplasty where they went in with a catheter that has a tiny balloon on the end. They fed it up his main artery in the groin all the way into his heart and inflated the balloon to open up his leaflets that were fused and domed and didn't open all the way to let the blood escape the chamber. So the pressure on his heart kept rising. He has been good since. However at his most recent checkup they told me that the "regurgitation" (the backflow from the leaflets not closing up properly) has increased. He will very likely need a heart valve replacement by the time he is 12.
We are very lucky to have evolved as a species, so that we can intervene like that. Animals often don't have that benefit, even when humans are involved. But just thought I'd shed some light as a mom of a boy with a congenital heart defect. (Covid has really destroyed our lives. I can't send him to daycare and therefore can't work because I have nobody to take care of him as I'm a single mom. It's so scary)

I congratulate all the good goverence and best practices the Chester Zoo does. You cannot tell me that rhinos don't have the ability to feel, mourn and think with intelligence
