  • A special video from 'down below' in the engine room of Paddle Steamer Waverley.
With a trainee alongside, a rare opportunity to hear the Chief Engineer calling out the bridge commands as he executes them, as well as a chance to see the Rankin & Blackmore triple-expansion steam engines operating backwards.
You hear the bridge telegraph bell sounds first, then listen carefully (volume up!) to the Chief Engineer calling out what those commands mean, as he then executes the commands by using the engine contrrol levers on the starting platform.
Watch closely and listen up to two sequences here for you!
First, coming in to Clacton Pier, we commence with the engines at 'slow ahead', the first command being to 'dead slow' (at 0:55)some astern movement to help berth the ship alongside the Pier, the a series of movements until the peel of bells is rung for 'finished with engines' (5:25).
The video then resumes with the Chief Engineer ready in position (after a nice tub of ice cream) to re-start the engines after a period at rest, starting them after the period at standby (8:07) and manoeuvring out of Clacton again with a whole series of commands and a great demonstration for you to enjoy.
After 11:38, the engines are set to 'full ahead' and the steamer slowly picks up speed.
Usually, you just hear the bell telegraph sounds and watch what goes on - here, it's explained for us too.
