You make the most wonderful ... bee, Astrid. My God, this is Orchid Heaven. And it was soooo nice of Mr Clarke for letting you film this to share it with some poor Europeans like me who have no opportunity to visit California in the near future. Thank you both so so so much!
There are a few more videos from my visit to Fred's Greenhouse coming! :) I am so happy you enjoyed this, and thanks for your very sweet comments! I actually have a bee tattoo because I love them so much.
***** Yeah, bees are cute little bugs, and aww, that tattoo sure is cute - I want one, too ... just not enough money currently. And oh, you are going to make me even more jealous with even more SVO greenhouse tour shenanigans? How very inconsiderate! :O Just kidding, I am looking forward to it! And to your next Catasetum update, I am sooooooooo excited to see how they do and how many spikes you already have :D
That is wonderful to hear. I just discovered a nubbin (that just can't be a growth, it can't D: ) on my Ten Dragons cross and I am just all over the place right now. And I mean all over my 60 squaremeters :D
Omg that is awesomeeeeeeeee. Also, do they measure apartments in m^2? That's odd! Though what else would you use... dm? cm? I suppose it makes sense after all. Yet we measure in ft^2 rather than yards...
What a cool video!! Catasetinae are already the strangest orchids, having both boy and girl flowers, but seeing the pollination process was super interesting. Thanks for filming the very knowledgeable Fred Clarke. He will be in town in the next few months to give a talk at the orchid society meeting.
Take the time to pick his brain! And be sure to pre-order from his website so he can bring some plants for you without you needing to pay shipping! He's a really friendly guy and you'll love his talk. :)
Hey Astrid!!! Miss seeing your videos. However, it's such a treat seeing you hang out with Fred. I have 10 catasetinae of Fred Clarks in my house ...thanks to you and your videos. I hope to try semi-hydroponics with some next year. In the meantime, I'm Looking forward to more updates. I hope all is well.
I'm going to make a video reviewing my feelings of growing catasetums in moss vs semi-hydro. There are a number of pros and cons for each and I like both for different reasons. I think they do well in semi-hydro!
Good luck! Keep the humidity sufficiently high or the new roots will not feel motivated to emerge. I'm trying to rescue a half-dead catt that I got from SVO and it was so so beautiful... and I nearly killed it. We'll see how the rescue mission goes for both of us. Report back to me in three months, Cheryl! :D
Thanks for sharing this, Astrid! It was so interesting to watch. I had no idea pollinea could be stored for later use. Probably catasetums are among the most satisfying orchids to pollinate, just because of the way they shoot the pollen, which looks like so much fun. :)) I got my first catasetum type orchid, by the way. A Cycnodes Wine Delight. Hopefully I will be able to get it to bloom, but we will see. The plant is kind of late, as the previous owner kept it outdoors at his greenhouse in the beginning of the summer when the weather was too cool, so by now the new bulb is still smaller than it could have been. BUt it's already bigger than the old one, so fingers crossed. :)
I wait until the last day the flowers look nice, then I shoot off the pollinia! It's so much fun! However the last catasetum I had in flower I waited too long and the pollinia auto-ejected on me, so no fun for me. I haven't seen a cycnodes wine delight bloom in person yet, even though it was my very first catasetum!! Mine just started a spike and I am very excited about it, I finally get another chance after last year's failure. Good luck with yours!
Thanks a lot for sharing. I have some bur only a few bloom. Not easy to get male and female flowers at the same time. How you keep and store the pollens? Would like to get some seeds for flasking. Daniel Jheelan from France
It just means that the male and female of a species look different or take different forms. In the case of catasetums, they are special because they have both male and female flowers, rather than combining both male and female parts into one flower! Neat!

I have filmed the update, just need to edit and post it! :)
I have two in spike right now!

HAHA! My face will return rather soon, don't fret! :D

Hi Astrid, I have a Cattleya with one tiny root, 😥. Praying she'll make it. She has a new growth and two new leaves. Have a good weekend.
Good luck! Keep the humidity sufficiently high or the new roots will not feel motivated to emerge. that was great! I had never seen it done... for orchids. have you filmed more? please do share
This was so awesome, Astrid, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Astrid. Very interesting video. When r we going to see your orchids?
Sometime soon. I have already filmed a catasetum update but it will come in a few days or maybe a week. :)
Sweet video!
Thanks!!

cool!
Hot! It was so warm in that room, ha ha
Well that was very... enlightening. :Wipes blood from nose: Playing hide the Pollen is always fun.
Haaaaaa
Well that was stimulating. I think?
I mean, my pollinia was triggered!
I'm going to have to look that up "sexually dimorphic." Thanks for the video, Astrid.

Too hot for TV! But seriously I've learned a lot about orchids from your channel.
Well, we are observing a form of sexual reproduction! SCANDALOUS, yet 100% natural, haha!
I'm glad you feel like I have been educational. :)
