- The area around Taiping developed rapidly in the 19th century when tin was discovered. The tin mines attracted a large number of settlers, particularly Chinese immigrants. These settlers organized themselves into different groups, leading to feuds between them.
The feuds among the Chinese immigrants became so bitter that in the early 1870s, the British stepped in and assumed control of the town. Taiping then became the capital for the districts of Larut, Matang, and Selama in Perak.
From 1876 to 1937, Taiping took over Kuala Kangsar’s role as the state capital. However, it was later replaced by Ipoh.
Taiping is known for its abundant rainfall. It receives the most rainfall in Peninsular Malaysia, with an average annual rainfall of about 4,000 mm. This high rainfall has led to lush flora and rain trees in the beautiful Taiping Lake Gardens.
Taiping was even ranked as one of the top three sustainable cities in the world!
