From what I've heard from signal maintainers here in the US, Safetran S-60 gate mechanisms, which were later branded under Invensys Rail and Siemens, were a huge step down from the Safetran S-40 gate mechanisms, and are pretty much shit all the way around. I can definitely agree on them sounding horrible though. There are a few near me and they all sound pretty bad. At least you know when they're in motion though, lol. It might've been due to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) requiring gate mechanisms here to use a "EGM card" (whatever that is), but if that fails, then you pretty much need a new gate mechanism (unles you by-pass it, which is an FRA no-no). Only time will tell how long they last compared to the S-40s, which there are thousands of in use with millions of operating cycles on their history, and most of them have barely had any issues. The ones on this line all appear to be the Invensys Rail S-60s, with the exception of a few Siemens S-60s.
The signalbox must be listed otherwise it would have been taken away/knocked down when they upgraded the crossing. I don't like those barriers at all I'm afraid.
