Filmed and edited by James Bryans between January 2010 and July 2011, on the Mornington Peninsula, VIC, Australia
A shining example of someone who does it for for the love of music. Called it a wrap after putting out 2 stellar albums and was on top of the music scene. This man is a musical legend in my eyes.
What if I told you... there was a third? 👀
Look up Boardface, if you haven't already
Most people don't understand that this man is truly a genius. I mean, he seriously is out of this world talented. listen to State of the Art if you think I'm joking or lying.
oml state of the art is so gooodddd
Nobody cares
@@StuffAndMemes at the time of writing, 44 did, yourself included.
@@StuffAndMemesApparently you care since you're here
State of the art is the song I always refer people two if they doubt this man. Lol
Doesn't this make the album a lot better?
The album cover will be now even more respected.
Gotye, you're a genius !
I always come back
To this video to Inspire Me
You and me both!
SpaceGuruu You both and me three!
Same here!
SpaceGuruu and Me ❤💙
I've come back to watch this every single year since it's been out, it's become a bit of a ritual for me.
The production on this album is absolutely amazing, seriously impressive these sounds came from a home studio!
Gotye is like the Avatar. When the world needed him most, he vanished.
My thought exactly
@ To be fair he seems pretty comfortable in his parent's barn.
because the world is stupid this days
Pretty sure he’s practicing on that organ
You probably dont care at all but does anybody know a tool to log back into an instagram account??
I somehow lost my account password. I would love any help you can give me!
I would pay $8 to see this documentary in a movie theater. It has more substance than a $300 million budgeted movie. So amazing to see how the music is made. Very inspirational.
i desperately want to find more youtube content like this lol
yeah totally
Kountkoal on instagram
Susan says you must watch cat videos. And clips from major networks.
Same same same
I have "state of the art" tattoed on my wrist, this is how much I love this song.
It's my favourite too, such an amazing song!
model D575 ?
hahaha @@shanehagan
I would kill for a Lowrey D575... had a genie88 once.. sadly it had dead keys so it got scrapped for components and the wood turned in to an electronics bench ;)
that's awesome! it's seriously his magnum opus.
Wouter, if you're reading this, I want you to know that you've inspired me so much, helped me so much, and connected with my soul so so much. I always cry when I listen to your music. I make music on my own as well. Your sincerity, honesty, passion for music and creativity are basically changing my world. I really want you to know how deeply emotional the words I say are right now. Thank YOU! :) huge fan.
"Save Me" is BEYOND WORDS the record is a masterpiece! thankyou GOTYE
for enlightening us with this powerfull music and art!
I'm in awe of his talent. I love seeing behind the scenes stuff like this.
Always come back to watch it. This album was such a huge important part of my teenage years. Its nostalgic, its fascinating, its art!
Gotye has that way of pulling together some of the most organic sounds - and whether synth is the direction or simplicity the goal, he's a master.
I watch this video every year or so. This guy is a genius. So so so inspiring. Thanks for sharing your talent.
i'm just impressed by his interest for forgotten music and how he gets inspiration from it
COME BACK, WOUTER!!!!!
Probably the most slept on piece of media he's ever made. Making mirrors contained his world hit song, and the rest of the album is so carefully crafted; only a piece of which is shown here. It's brilliant. I hope he finds the inspiration to write again someday.
I can't believe someone this artistic, creative, and genius really walks on this planet..unbelievable.
i cant believe ive never seen this or bothered to investigate your work beyond having your songs in my playlists for years, thank you for your work
"Today, we're here to bring you Gotye: the one man band. And his side-kick, guitar man..."
Most pop stars just sing, some play a instrument or two and a few write their own music and handle the arrangement of it. You are a true musician and musical artist. I was fascinated by how you create the sounds that make up your music and loved how you used your dad's art to create your album cover. What a wonderful tribute! I look forward to seeing where you go from here and hearing how you evolve. May you have a long and successful career in music!
This is the most humble, generous, and original piece of art I have ever seen.
This could be four hours long and I'd still watch every second.
This man put so much time, thought, effort, and creativity into his work and society had the audacity to classify him as a one hit wonder. Its not fair that the artists that don’t sell out always fall into obscurity for not doing so. Wally will always be considered a hero and a legend in my eyes and has made such an impact on my life.
Making Mirrors may be the most singularly listened to album of my teens and this is the first time I've seen this. It's a great shame in a way because that album was a huge part of me youth. I carried it in the back of my mind the whole time as I discovered my own desire to make music and I wish I had the opportunity to witness an abstraction of the creative process that lead to something I admire so much. I understand that this project is mostly over as it's been years but I really hope to see and most importantly hear more. Thank you for your immense creativity and how much you've shared it with us. I'm getting to a point where I may not be able to reach my creative goals but seeing this now has considerably inspired me to try so much harder. Thank you Wally.
Wow. Just wow. He's an absolute musical genius. I love how he uses so many diferrent instruments & sounds to create his musical masterpieces, & the fact that he takes inspiration from things like the organ to write his music.
I hadn't heard of Gotye till I saw an advert for Making Mirrors. Then I bought it, listened to it, and got myself the prior 2 albums and the mix album. I have massive respect for you and your talent, I wish more of your work receives the recognition it deserves.
2:20 love this melody so much.
I just love watching him sing out "State of the Art" and seeing his sheer excitement at his results. 8:04 - 8:11, it's so cute!
you brilliant brilliant man
11 years and I'm back again. Love this
i'm still watching this amazingly inspiring "making of" every year!
I frikkin love him, He is a musical prodigy....genius....
That's
That's
That's
I don't even know what to say except its beautiful
This was awesome. Also one of my favorite records of all time. So glad I googled to see if there was something like this.
We need more Gotye music, this album is a masterpiece
And here I am, revisiting or more like rewatching it after 12 years. Making Mirrors will always have a special place in my heart.
Absolutely amazing all the process, MY IDOL!
I admire this guy a lot. It's not only his music, but the feel and love he has. Such an inspiration.
I love his work ethic and his voice, it’s so f* beautiful.
It's amazing how he does this all by himself... finally an artist that truly appreciates music!!
I love this album, the greatest sounds in each song and the fabolous videos. Gotye, thanks for the magic. Best (:
ive never seen someone be so honest about themselves and their music. if i was a musician i would be glad to know this guy was around to inspire me and others
This guy is a true musical genius. The world was just too ignorant to recognize that.
As a DIY recording artist I truly look up to this guy. He revolutionized the way we think about DIY and its possibilities through the making of this album.
Omg! you have an incredible talent and i love your music ❤❤💙💛💛 I think is because you transmit your passion through the music .. greetings from Costa Rica !
This guy has so much talent it's crazy. A true musician and genius.
Gotye...you are a musical genius.
This is so so inspiring 🙌🏻 I'm glad I found this video. Thank you so so much gotye 🙌🏻😌
when he started putting save me together i was screaming "I WANT MORE" in my head
His music is like a collage of old records, paintings, so many different instruments, his own creativity, skill, hard work and time, his gorgeous voice, friends help, and it amounts to such picturesque and overwhelming masterpieces of eargasm after eargasm n.n!!! Gotye lives in my
I admire this musician for such amazing creative ability and talent. Definitely an inspiration as a musician
The bit about using a piece of art from his dad made me smile. How very sweet.
This was quite fascinating to watch. I'm always amazed when I watch things like this and see the effort and time put in, figuring out how to make everything sound good. Gives me a whole new level of appreciation for what he's doing.
Also, that Op Shop looks COOL and I want to go there. His passion and love for music (and art!) is something I can easily relate to and is one of the things I like most about him.
You're my favorite musician by far.
god, I would love to hear the multitracks for the entire album, the insane amount of detail is astounding
4:00 As someone who records by myself in a home studio, I can confirm this as extremely true.
This is one of the most amazing videos i have ever watched !!! You are such an inspiration to me. I love how you make everything yourself or make it your own and don't rely on other people too do all the work for you! You are so different to anybody else out there and your music is so unique! every time i listen to a piece of your music its as if i am listening to a story not a song! keep making amazing music...PLEASE!
I wonder if his parents knew he would be extraordinary.
I would imagine his parents are quite extraordinary, as well, to have fostered such a gift in him while remaining so humble.
This documentary made me chuckle and feel nostalgic for the days when my husband ran a recording studio out of a big barn much like yours. I've missed witnessing the creative process; the beginning experimentation that makes you wonder what the hell the artist is thinking of, to the end when the madness turns into magic. I loved it all, and the memories made me enjoy this documentary so much more.
He's so artistic. If all music was this deep and meaningful, there's no telling how peaceful we would all be. Screw pop.
I'm totally in awe of your ability to make sound into new music. I'm old, also a musician and composer. My son had an expertise in creating sound into music and he was sooo talented. He died in 2014 at the age of 25 in his prime of creativity. He inspired me greatly and definitely so do you inspire me even still now at my age of 70. Keep up your vast talents and never doubt your love of music. Thankyou Gotye, Rosy
Some day I'm gonna be musician just like you
You can make music!
Wally- I know you won't see this, but I just have to tell you how inspiring and comforting Making Mirrors is to me. I started listening to it a week ago and haven't been able to stop since. I literally enjoy and appreciate every single song. Down to the beautiful vocals, the relatable lyrics, to the many layers of unique and hypnotic melodies. I am so glad that I stumbled upon this documentary and the other one on Eyes Wide Open. Thank you for sharing your process and talent with the world.
Crap, this video won't load for me. Can anyone link me to any Making Making Mirrors mirrors?
high iq joke
So less people got it
Thank you Gotye. I am totally moved by your music and the real authentic persona you bring in even just this brief vid. With gratitude I thank you.
6:21 those little car record player things. can anyone tell me what there called? ive been looking for something like that for a long time.
Seriously, it's amazing how confident and proactive you are to do this. You make me feel like a mess. I'm envious.
your a genius.
you're
Fascinating insight, and what a clever multi-talented lad. It's lovely to see someone that is so in tune with and has such affection for their family too.
Bjork should record with him.
that’s such a great match . they bounce off each other so well in my head !
I watch these documentary shorts over and over again for inspiration and I get more and more out of them each time.
I would love to hang out with like just for 5 minutes or something.
This is a very beautiful, charming little documentary. It's like... I experience a lot of minimalism when watching and listening to your sound bytes. It's like... everything is stripped back to its individual element as sparse as can be and then stuck like bits of scrap paper into a collage again of very great tiny bits of beauty. I love your father's design which resonates of both the golden mean and fractals. You're such an artist... so much more than a musician. Beautiful. Thank you G.
Next vid: making making making mirrors
Fantastic insight to how creative a musician Wally is. I love this album and its stuck with me over the years and thanks to this documentary I can see what went into the making of Making Mirrors.
Ugh! Why can't the first minute be a song!
+Jacob Crow It's a song. It's the first Track on "Making Mirrors" =)
+DrNEMOTv sorry yeah I meant the second part at 00:45 when he's messin around on the keyboard.
As an electronic musician and aspiring sound designer, I have so much respect for everything Gotye is doing here and that it's essentially exactly the way us bedroom musicians work. Just us sitting in our rooms, sampling away, making something very personal to us, occasionally involving others for human interaction. Much respect to you and your craft Gotye.
Always awesome to find an artist that still makes music out of pure emotion and for the love of music...being as someone who grew up in love with hip hop, it is extremely refreshing to find good music, such as Gotye's and break away from the mainstream, generic sound of today...one word to describe his process of making great music, in my opinion, would be "pure".
I really appreciate how Gotye was organizing his sounds and recording the beautiful sounds of the autoharp and then programming the tones onto his keyboard. I too am a muzik producer and I just love watching other sound artists getting lost in their music. Like truly getting "INTO IT."
This is so unbelievably fascinating. And beautiful. And it feels like you can put everything together now...like a puzzle. Thanks for this!
this beautiful and personal record with us. I always thought you had a very clear and communicative idea when it comes to translating your music into visual language. Listening to your narration, I now can see that you naturally have a great sense of literal language itself; it was a pleasure just to get to hear your explanation along with the film. Also, State of the Art is one of my favorite tracks and I didn't know the story behind the song! Really, really inspiring.
Officially sold. Buying everything on iTunes now, this man brings passion to music and life, I'm a massive fan now.
Genius. Really. They don't come along very often, but this guy is the real deal.
Love your music ! Thanks for expressing yourself.
I like the way you share all this personal details about how you've managed to achieve this wonderful music. It makes me apreciate more your music.
Thank you - this is SUCH an inspiring documentary. I've always loved playing with sounds and now have fun with my 10 year old son introducing him to soundplay and making music. Thanks for doing what you do and sharing it with us.
This is a tutorial to how to make music to hold on to. Thank you wally Andre for all the songs that made me rise up and smile again. Please don't
stop making music!
This guy is a genuine artist. Hope money doesnt change him and most important his style of music making.
It has been 7 years I come back to your making videos every time I feel stuck and try to get out of there. This is such a masterpiece video. I seriously appreciate for releasing your wonderful works! (I found a stuffed animal from the Japanese TV "MEZAMASHI TV" at the back of the room)
I like the way how Gotye basically sings about his thoughts ans whatever he feels like. It gives his music its own edge, unlike most music these days. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for not just existing, but living & creating the art you do. Truly hope you are doing well.
You sir , are a genius. Real musician. This day and age its hard to find an artist with the talent that you have.very impressed!
You're seriously my inspiration. You put so much passion into your work and it turns out great! I did not regret buying your album at all. I listen to it daily. And I especially love the fact that your songs have WAY different meanings then any songs you hear on the radio. Thank you so much for making these fantastic songs. KEEP IT UP :D
I LOVE THIS DOC. Love authentic genuine creative people like this man!. Lovely video.
What an inspiring documentary! Now THIS is how you make music, people!
I definitely will always be a fan of your work, Gotye! Keep up the great job! :)
There is something beautiful and inspiring about everything he does
his hands....artistic
What happens in his head to produce this music - I hope never ends
i wish he'd do more documentaries. fascinating to see someone so creative at work, and how he puts it all together.
Yep... 2:56 my brain exploded. That song makes me weep with joy. To see how he built it - in a room - alone... This man deserves every tiny ounce of success he receives.
From watching this video, along with all your other videos, it's clear to me that Gotye simply loves what he does. He loves music and loves to create it. He does things his way, follows his dream, doesn't try to sound like anyone else. That is why he is successful now. It was just a matter of time before the rest of the world noticed. Thank you for following your dream Gotye and giving us great music.
