So glad to listen to this while doing chores! Awakening was my first FE and 3DS game and was the reason why I got into the franchise. Agreed on a lot of fronts (like how the persecution of Plegia was kind of…swept under the rug). I really miss Streetpassing other teams too

I really like the video, I also started from awakening, i end up beating the game without using pair up because i didn't understand how pair up work, I end up loving the game and I continued playing practically all games of the series and Heroes.

    first of all, The Outfit
    ok moving on
started FE on the GBA and loved it despite being awful at it, stan Hector. the dating sim elements of the newer ones have never 100% worked for me (mostly bc a lot of the supports don't write them like people or give them more than one character trait to work with) but I can look past it for the good mechanical stuff
as a result Awakening didn't really click for me back when but it saved FE so I can forgive a lot lol

    • @sylphiemk
      @sylphiemk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

thank youuu I was very happy with the look. I've been wanting to get into some of the older games again, I played like half of both sacred stones and path of radiance and really want to finish them. I don't mind the dating sim elements but I also only really liked them in awakening. In fates it felt forced and choosing Sothis for my first S rank in 3H not knowing the game would fully commit to a romantic angle for them spoiled the whole thing for me lol. In Engage I didn't give the ring to anyone

Being someone that listens to your videos while working or when I'm grinding S-Ranks/Exp/Stats/etc., I appreciate the beefy videos! I typically use youtube like a ghost, but I just wanted to let you know that your videos are awesome and I love your perspective! I don't know what your plans are, but I hope the algorithm sweeps you off your feet so the content keeps coming!
Awakening hit me at the perfect time during a highschool summer with time to kill (got that and SMT IV at the same time, I have never been the same), so I have a huge soft spot for the game. I still get a bit teary every time Matt Mercer tells me to get off the ground. Being my first FE, I was shocked at getting to experience what felt like a whole saga on a handheld, what with the time skip and multiple political shifts. Retrospectively, I do wish the story and factions were more textured, but I can't imagine the difficulty of deciding what makes the cut when working on potentially the last Fire Emblem game, with time travel involved no less! I can't say Fates was a stellar follow-up, and I don't think I'm picking up Engage, but Echoes and Three Houses were excellent, so I have hope for the series. The wait for their next hit just gives me time to figure out how I'll play the Radiant games!

haha I totally get it, on my acct that I actually watch yt on, I'm really a lurker too. Thanks for watching (and/or listening) and I'm so glad you're enjoying my stuff! It was definitely nostalgic to revisit the game, I really haven't touched it at all probably since 2015 at the latest, and I'm very glad that it largely holds up and it still has me longing for more lmao. I also want to play the radiant games so badly. I saw a couple of the gba games at a local retro store and they were both like $300 and I wanted to cry. Being a fan is brutal haha

Ok but I literally saw the thumbnail and my immediate thought was "oh my god *yes* I am absolutely living for the fit today". So glad you took the time out of the video to give it the spotlight it deserved.
Firstly, I'm so glad we can agree that the DS/3DS is one of the greatest things ever, I'm genuinely not convinced that anything will ever beat what a moment in history the reign of those systems was. Secondly, YES. Awakening is certainly not my favourite entry in the series, but ultimately we need to put so much more respect on it's name for literally saving the franchise. It gets so much hate from every side it feels like, and I'm sad that it became the community punching bag.
I'm glad you bought up Robin's skin colour, because that genuinely baffles me to this day. Like, they're Validar's kid, but you have no way of actually being dark skinned?? Full agree on the "funny coincidence" that the good Plegians are light skin, while everyone else in the country is darker than them. Say'ri ABSOLUTELY got robbed of Supports and I will stay salty about this. Also her Supports with Tiki continue the trend of wlw ships having some of the most romantic writing in their canon. Your kid builds were honestly really cool to see because every time I play this game I marry off almost exactly the same pairs. Seeing all the ladies as Dark Fliers was such an Awakening moment, I love it. I wish the Valm arc had been more fleshed-out in the game because it really feels like the red-headed step child of the arcs, just not really fitting in. And agree that the Spotpass characters were really weird, like they were definitely shoehorned in for the sake of fanservice and letting players marry them. Aversa especially disappoints me, because her story really should have been main game material. and i refuse to touch priam with a ten-foot pole.
I think Awakening is a little bit silly, has a few plot holes, and too much missed potential for my liking. But I also think it's a genuinely good game, and deserves recognition for what it achieved for the franchise as a whole. It was also the first FE I ever played, and it was just an absolute rabbit hole from there, so I'll always have a soft spot for it for that reason too. Great video as always! Revisiting one of the first games that defined my modern love for video games was really nice!

    • @sylphiemk
      @sylphiemk  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you, the fit was so gorg haha. And thanks for watching!
Yeah awakening was an attempt to save the franchise, but also kind of a soft reboot in a way? Especially having so many easter egg references to previous games and taking place in the same universe as Marth's story, but centuries later. I think they were really successful in conceptualizing a game that (on paper lol) could appeal to both old and new fans while also introducing a ton of new stuff.
Again, let Robin be dark! Let Say'ri be important! I'm glad the build stuff didn't lose people, I was concerned it would be Boring lol. And yeah a whole select screen full of dark fliers is unbelievably awakening lmao. I also agree that they could have fleshed out the Valm arc more, I think it worked but there's definitely untapped potential. Aversa is so so cool and it's insane that they decided to leave her backstory out of the main arc entirely.

loved the look (lace and baby blue looks very pretty on you) and loved you tackling this game! it's one of my favorites of all time, faults and all, even years later i still find myself replaying, and i honestly believe a lot of its charm (and fates as well) is that it came on the 3ds there's just something about playing on a little handheld typically in the back of the car or in bed that just wedges itself into your heart. i personally enjoy that the game doesn't have a lot going on for story, only simple stepping stones, but you make a lot of excellent points about how these things could have been expanded or talked about with just a bit more care. #LetRobinBeDark

Interesting hearing your perspective on my favorite game. Came here after watching the sumia video. As much as I like the replay-ability that comes with the freedom of choice in pairings as well as permadeath, I do think we got shafted in some aspects with characters' stories and plot relevance. Great videos! I'm interested to see more of your content!

Great video! Awakening was my first fire emblem game and my most replayed game ever, something about it always brings me back. I'm very sad I didn't remember to buy the DLC before the store closed down- I started playing it as a teen with no money or credit card, so I forgot I'd be able to afford it now until it was too late 🥲 emulation is not the same to me.
The 3DS is still my favorite console too. Although the graphics weren't the best, they had so much room for uniqueness, and I loved them very much. I still miss the UI that Awakening and other 3DS FE entries had because it was the easiest for me to digest while also being aesthetically pleasing. I find it hard to differentiate characters on the screen while playing the switch entries.
And I'm also glad to hear someone else say they pronounced falchion as falkeon until corrected LOL. The first time I heard it pronounced I was upset!!

I always get excited seeing the notifications for your videos come up, cause I already know I'm going to be watching some good content and let's just say you did not disappoint once again.
Firstly I just want to say thankyou for making such a long video, ik that they ar much harder and longer to edit, but I really do appreciate them. And also thank you for making another fire emblem video!! I really enjoy hearing ur perspective and opinions on those games.
Awakening wasn't my first fe game, but I hear a lot of praise about it before playing it so my expectations were high. I did enjoy the game, but little things brought it down like enemy reinforcements being unpredictable and moving on the same turn, that really bothered me. However on a second playthrough about a year later I ended up enjoying the game much more and recruited a lot of more the child characters than my first playthrough.
Hearing ur builds and opinions of the cast was actually my favourite bit in the whole video. I loved what you had to say and I also that 'incredibles reference' just came out of nonwhere and had my dying 😂
I myself never even noticed the skin tone with the villains and heroes before, but that's probably because I am a white male myself so I was just completly oblivious to it all. It makes a lot of sense tho and is really weird. Going back I will definitely remember that.
Thankyou for another great video and can't wait for the next one, whatever the topic may be.

Oh yay I'm so glad you enjoyed and appreciated the length! The size of the project was a bit too much for my laptop (the software crashed during my first export attempt) but I have a new PC coming next week so hopefully this isn't an issue as much anymore and longer/bigger videos will be more achievable.
I love awakening so so much, I want to play every game in the series eventually (or at least an iteration of every game, I'm impatiently waiting for FE4 remake) but awakening really opened the SRPG door for me. I'm happy that I didn't cut the build stuff bc I thought it would be boring but obviously it was a hit lmao. Anyways, see you in the next one!

Ahhh the nostalgia for Awakening! I gotta play it another time
Also loved the pairings, and the reclasses made a lot of sense. Idk how that worked but I paired Tharja and Libra since 1.they were recruited in the same chapter so they HAD to be paired together initially and 2. ESPECIALLY for the supports they had, I saw the chemistry and Noire ended up getting the Dark Flier class, so now she's a Warlock and the strongest unit in my roster

i never actually played the dlc so it was interesting to hear what happened.
i was obsessed with the ds and 3ds and awakening was my first fire emblem. i loved it as a little teen but honestly as i get older i find that a lot of fire emblem is for teenagers so the basic storytelling doesn’t bother me too much. i am a fates fangirl for the gameplay and i was surprised just how much different it felt to play awakening again after playing the fates games

Still play it, still love it, flawed as it is. I oscillate between marrying my life long favorite Henry and the not-batman Gerome. I love them both a lot. Recently felt an urge to pick it up again myself strangely so a well timed video! The 3DS did have some real good games. I wish I would have played Rune Factory 4 on it as a kid, I would have loved it, but at least I played it on switch. If you haven't played it, it's amazing, though I would not recommend the 5th game, it gets a lot wrong imo.
Busted male skill: Counter is the one I usually go with. I get way too into it optimizing the first and second gen. It is actually kind of ruining the playthrough I'm trying to start, maybe I should just play the gd game instead of min/maxing right from the start before I can really even reclass lol...
And I really wanted Emmeryn to have supports. And that adult!Tiki had more supports as well. Enjoyed the video!
*Edit, I am also of mixed race parentage and pale pale pale.
**Also the music is very good.
***Given it more thought while playing:
Biggest issue with Awakening world building is in how the army moves. It makes little to no sense most of the time, and some general inserted story contrivances which make the game feel less naturally flowing than it could. Since I've finally played Blazing Blade and watched videos about the others (Awakening was also my first FE game) and how those games pretty seamlessly get from one location to the next with story motivation, I do wish the "we're a war party with a standing army" part of the game would have been taken a little more seriously, as with Ylisse's war crimes. Though this is definitely in part a rendering issue, it's also a tone issue. There is a lot of humor in Awakening, and not all of it is good haha.
And rarely do the royal characters feel royal. Fates actually gets the sense of importance across better imo. And there is not even a comparison to Three Houses, which actually feels like a return to the original tone of FE now that I have a better context of the series at large, though I do wish there were beast races in TH. I do think the game gets a lot better as the stakes raise and generally love every character (except Cordelia, I just can't stand her) but it's certainly not a perfect experience. I forgot how cool the graphics look with the 3D turned on though!

    • @sylphiemk
      @sylphiemk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi fellow pale person, thank you for watching! Maybe there's something in the universe at play that has people revisiting awakening haha. I really struggle with farming sims lmao but I'm glad to know Rune Factory 4 is a good entry point, I always thought the artwork was gorgeous when I saw it on shelves.
Playing without min/maxing skills at all could be a fun challenge for you lol. I used to pair units in school notebooks and make word docs to track the pairs and best skills for each unit, so it was almost odd to just like play the game with no agenda. I originally wasn't going to grind at all this run and then I got to a certain point and wanted to explore the child units more. More for Emm and Tiki would've been awesome.
Now that you say it, narratively, the fact that our army can go pretty much anywhere uninterrupted does create dissonance between the game and the story. Like there are some maps where we definitely should lose access from being able to go anywhere, and the game just pushes us forward, like in path of radiance of engage. I think the ragtag tone of the quirky cast is fun, but it gets hard to separate from all the really brutal stuff that the game just handwaves, especially with an elite force on the move. I'm surprised at how few noble folk are on the cast in awakening, like it really is the prince and princess then, outside of a couple of actually appointed soldiers, it's mostly normie people fighting for peace.
      *The music is fab

@@sylphiemk Thanks for taking the time to respond! I did the same thing with the pairings haha, maybe I was just a little obsessed. Awakening will always remain a life long favorite.
RF 4 has a good deal of combat, and the farming is mostly optional and it can be (mostly) automated with the help of pets. The townsfolk are really the selling point. The cast of characters (if they float your archetype boat of course) are super quirky and cute, and honestly I've never played a game that makes the town feel so alive.

I love, love, loved Awakening. It and FE4 are the FE games I've put the most time into. I think it hasn't aged as well as I thought it would, but it's still good and fun to play to this day.
I think Awakening's strongest asset is it's characters. Even though they're superficially one note, when you actually get some supports you realize that they're way less so than you would expect. The story is objectively eh but the characters are so strong that it feels like a great story.
And then it's just fun to play. Yeah, maybe grinding takes away the challenge of the game but who fucking cares? I would like my little guys who i played matchmaker to get to roundhouse kick the baddies in the face without even breaking a sweat, as God intended.

I need to replay the future past DLC again, but I‘m pretty sure there is a heavy implication that the morgan we get in our TL is actually one of the future past boss morgans who got… either banished by grima or purposefully displaced by a rebelling robin to protect him somewhat.
There were some mentions of a notebook or something, that gets both mentioned in their support with their parent, as well as… I think if you fight Morgan with Robin, or try talking with them? Sorry, my memories are fuzzy, like I said, I gotta freshen up my memories.

baby me was romhacking the gba "Fire Emblem" before I knew the full multiplication table 😭😭. Anyways, for Awakening I've gone back and forth on liking it/enjoying it and just being very meh on it like I think at points it's sort of feels self-aware of its blandness but after my most recent playthrough I've kind of rekindled my love for it a lil'. I really enjoy the character building, fun characters (that toe the line between actually fun chemistry and "are the straights ok" energy) and the DLC is really fun and fanservice-y in both the 😳and the 🤓way (no fun is worth that price but you can bet I just downloaded it all thanks to homebrew). This game is the only time I will side with waifu-fied capitalism in Anna but Stahl is my true bread boy, my sweet cheese, my little guy. This is why I'm subbed to you
24:38 thanks for touching on this. I meant to post this on the day you uploaded but real world events in the Middle East/Western Asia distracted me.
This type of colourism in media including video games is not called out enough for what it is. Its an orientalist trope which demonises those with darker skin and it has real world effects. Not sure if you have kept up with the conflict in Gaza but the president of the country bombing them recently justified the bombings by citing that his country are the "children of light" fighting the "children of darkness".
This is reinforced in media where consumers less critical than yourself form racial biases.
It's a part of games that really tick me off such as Dragon Quest 11 and also Zelda Totk
I've never played awakening as I'm a 3H baby but I'm happy it doesn't continue this racist trope.

I agree that both real-world events and the fiction we consume continue to contribute to these negative biases against Middle Eastern people, and POC by extension. I think it's horrible, and I find it frustrating that these "tropes" are still being perpetuated in many places. I hope I was able to handle the topic well.
Thank you for subbing, means a lot!

The thing is that the rest of the source content is stuck in those audio dramas that never were released in the States alongside the manga where they expand on some of the other characters. So if ya found the bear hat out of place in Lucina's accessory handouts when ya scanned her Amiibo into FE14, all comes from those audio dramas. FE13 takes places 2 millenia after the events of New Mystery of the Emblem for which not a lot makes a lot of sense unless you have played the first 3 games or its remakes.

I really like awakening it saddens me that it gets alot of hate from the Fandom. I also hope someday the child unit system comes back cause i like that supports actually doing something usefull instead of just being stats and stuff

Oh my gosh, you and Pronounce 70% of words/names differently and I’m willing to bet that I’m actually wrong… but I will also never pronounce Tharja with anything but a hard J.
Good video but I would recommend just putting a little music in the background if you’re going to just talk for an hour. I mean if you’re gonna edit visuals and jump cuts to make it easier to watch why not just a little music?

I’m not really sure where you’re getting the idea that the plegians are somehow middle eastern coded, or that “the bad ones” are “brown”. The unique portraited villains are all pretty Caucasian looking. In fact, a vast majority of them are natural redheads. Garrick, Vasto, Orton, Algol, even Gangrel himself. Keep in mind, red hair has for the most part symbolized evil in many games, as opposed to blue hair good characters and green hair dragon characters.
Regardless, idk just seems like a weird narrative to pull with little to no evidence to back it. You can argue that many of the plegians are ugly though, many of them look like stereotypical “trailer trash”, the sort of white men who are typically negatively portrayed as ignorant and uneducated among many other negative things. I think a point should be made that portraying ugliness as strictly an evil trait is pretty surface level in terms of storytelling. Pencil moustaches, receding hairlines, lanky, potbellies, a lot of these plegians are portrayed with traditionally unattractive masculine features.
