    The City 🎼
This City is about the trials and tribulations of young love, yet it is so much more than this. The City is a rant against betrayal and deception, themes Grace VanderWaal first visited in Gossip Girl. The music is personal, and laced throughout with a growing anger and sarcasm. Grace takes the negative energy and seamlessly weaves it into her music. The result is a song which, when performed by the artist, transcends the pop music genre. ~ The song tells the story of a young woman, not unlike the artist herself, waiting for a call which never comes. “one of the boys... i’ll be chill... i’ll keep my cool... but don’t play me for the fool ... don’t be so cruel... ‘cause i can fake it that i’m happy... but this time you can see... you try to make a good memory... ‘cause you like my jealousy... but you’re out in the city... with your friends... oh so pretty... plastic little hard shells... in their gucci shoes and wigs and noses... i know i’m being dramatic...” so go and build your reality with images from your house of mirrors... she is waiting for you... in the shards of glass...
“just blow out the candle... oh little boy... when will you learn... you don’t play with fire... unless you wanna get burned....” gv
“you don’t tug on superman’s cape... you don’t spit into the wind... you don’t pull the masks off the ol’ lone ranger... and your don’t mess around with slim...” jc

I won't ask you to react to another Grace song because The City is so powerful and emotive, it brings goose bumps. This is my favorite Grace Vanderwaal song. My heart yields to the pain she expresses in her face and her voice at the end. She totally had me mesmerized. This is my favorite reaction.

Right from the beginning, in the songs she's written she's favored two signature techniques. She likes tempo changes and The Big Finish, and often combines them. Good reaction! Thanks! Can't wait to experience what she's doing in ten years, but I'm in no hurry to get that much older. Did you notice in the end just how far off the Mic she was singing? That's real vocal power.

She has this talent of making us hang on those pauses almost breathless, as if we need her to resume so we can procede to the next breath too...thats the only way i can explain that with words, i mean, since i stumbled upon her music in 2017 i must have hone throught all my known vocabulary and its never enough to explain how amazing this young woman is, she will sure leave her mark in the music, the way she creates and interprets her thoughts, even everyones life things like this song of a relationship one knows wont ever work as the other one is just selfish and all he/she cares is their friends and to have fun but not with the person they claim to love and how we one day just have to accept the fact it wont work and just let it go...yet the way she interprets it just makes it so soulfull, heart and soul piercing even id dare to say.
She allways loves to take us on these musical rollercoasters that are her songs, never flat as she allways loves these pace changes and has an affection to culminate them on those high notes that simply give you chills and then she drops it and you land right back on your chair and cant help to wonder what just happened? What have i jist witnessed?...and she is still just 16...now give her a few more years and you sure will see a music icon, one of those that stick in your memory and that you cant talk music without bringing out her name. "This girl is special"...oh Simon was so right on that! She has this gift to make us feel the music...very few artists can do this.
But ok here i am talking way too much again lol...awesome on point reaction as allways man! Thanks for it. Stay cool, stay safe and have an amaeing weekend!

Armando Ribeiro - Beautiful insights. And there’s also a dark streak in her music, starting with Moonlight and running through Darkness Chases Me, Clearly and Stray. There’s even a bit of it in this song. Her struggles with her personal demons allows her to add texture and dimension to her work, without which her music would be incomplete. The most important singer-songwriter of her generation.

@@BobbyU808 and the best of it is she grasps all those deep feelings and struggles without necessarely having lived throught all of that (only she knows the real answer to that) but she renders it in such a soulfull way that it sure pierces our soul and leaves us wondering how can she get it so deeply at her young age? Also, some like Darkness Keeps Chasing Me, as you so well pointed out, have a kinda dark theme to it, that permanent struggle with our inner fears, emotions and anxiety that we all gone throught in a way or another and can relate to it, but its a healing anthem...try to listen to it when you're down and you'll see what i mean...its like she understands what you go throught in that precise time and that has sure an healing effect, she can grasp so much of all that in a "simple" song, imo thats for sure a Grammy worth one (shame she didnt had the exposure for that when the song was eligible for it and that the academy is rotten from within as is most of the industry)

    • @armandoribeiro1181
      @armandoribeiro1181 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@BobbyU808 talking about River, her cover of Leon Bridges's "River" is a really good example of her talent as a singer...so much so that it even shaddows the original (with all due respect to Leon, he is an awesome artist for sure) but to render such a deep gospel in her unique way and making us feel every single word of it its a feat not many can.

    • @BobbyU808
      @BobbyU808 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Armando Ribeiro - I’ve heard her cover of River many times. An impossible performance for a 13-year-old girl. Grace’s covers are often better than the originals, as you know. Have you heard her rendition of Moon River at the Beanrunner Cafe? I would have never thought anyone could top Audrey Hepburn’s iconic rendition of it but imo Grace did. ~ How ru holding up? If not for music in general and Grace’s music in particular, I’d be “crawling in my skin.” Another great cover! 😀

One other thing to mention. Have you noticed how amazing Grace is at creating vocal hooks? When I first discovered Grace (AGT), I found myself singing her choruses - specifically the “hooks” for days after - even after one listen. Typically I don’t get a song stuck in my head until I have more exposure to them. There is just a quirkiness about them that immediately hook in your ear.

Pure and perfect reaction ! Grace quotes tempo and melody chances as in well-known epic songs about this sad issue ("... here comes my baby ... with another guy ..."), but in her own poetic way, switching to speech melody and piano, backwards to high notes and forte, it's always on point ... "Wenn meine Liebste Hochzeit hat, ist für mich ein Trauertag" is 200 y.o. german version of this "born for bad luck" theme ... and there are similar french and spanish a-capella songs also switching to minor in every second part of the sentence ... but Grace and "City" is truely a class of her own.

Outstanding Reaction! IMO Grace's EP Letters Vol 1 is an artistic masterpiece. She crosses moods while exploring the aspects of relationships. With each song she seems to pinpoint the right mood with the stage she's talking about in the song. She said in an interview in the last year or so, that she starts a song sometimes from something that occurred or an emotion she felt, but by the end of writing it it has morphed into "almost a lie." You are right about her creativity, but she has another very prominent quality, Empathy. Somehow, even though she hasn't experienced something herself, she knows how it feels, what it's like, and writes the song. Then she leaves the lyrics open ended enough that we all say "Exactly! What she said!" She is simply brilliant.
BTW It's all good man, keep doin' what you hafta do.

She is universal; the young folks are old and the old folks are young in the enigmatic world of Grace Vanderwaal. She is as lovely as her voice. Fable, you wonderfully unraveled are mystery girl. Good job man, God bless. OLD PETER U S A thanks!

Fable, Fable, Fable. You have become my favorite reactor. I'm a fan of Grace's, but I'd not heard this song yet. I really enjoyed experiencing it with your reaction, your ear catches little nuances that mine would have missed on the first listening. Your pointing them out and sharing your perspective really adds to the experience.
Grace really is a special person, she has that 'something' that most of us mere mortals just weren't born with. Her ability to convey complex and powerful thoughts and emotions with such raw elegance is the genius that is her signature style.
Once you've heard her voice and vocal uniqueness you will always be able to recognize it, even if you're hearing something for the first time. It is the mark of a truly great performer, to speak or sing just a word or phrase and you know exactly who it is. Think Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Leonard Cohen, David Bowie, Freddie Mercury. (I just realized two things; First, four of those five are dead, and second, Grace is the only female artist I can think of that has this ability.)
I just hope I'm still here in 20 years to see and hear what Grace will grace us with. Her parents really could not have chosen a more perfect name for her.
BTW, I like the new look. Just hang in there, keep doing what you're doing. So long as we keep moving ahead, this will eventually be behind us.
    Cheers and thank you.

You're so right that everyone can relate to this situation. Who hasn't felt that anxiety of wanting more than what you're getting from a relationship, even leading to anger or anguish (which comes across in the buildup to her final cries at the end). You could call it the needy, or "getting weird" stage of a relationship, but it's hard to avoid, and it's often a make-or-break moment.

I loaded the audio of this performance into Audacity along with the studio version so I could play them simultaneously. There is very little difference between the vocals on the two. At a couple of points you can hear they are slightly different, but mostly they are exactly the same down to a millisecond. It's freakish. I don't know how a person could have that much control over their voice.

I wish all reactors had your ear. She always pokes fun of her inner self and when she trivialized her vocal coaches lessons in the past, it's because it's the same fault she has with learning piano. It takes great effort and concentration but Grace is the type that wants to draw it but she isn't interested in learning the color scale to paint it. Where Harrison and McCartney use a uke to write songs then take it to a studio Grace just wants to sing her songs whether there's instruments involved or not. I really believe Grace could go a whole career as an acapella singer. The other day a guy told Grace there were other things you can do on a recording computer program she was using while she was live, Grace said she wasn't interested. With Grace I think there is a time to learn and then there's a time to do and Grace was in the middle of doing. Another good example I think is when everyone learns to ride a bike then graduates to motorcycles and cars Grace keeps riding her bike and wins the Tour de France.
I think she talked to her then boyfriend and told him to not worry, it's just a song, they are still friends

There's a hint of the backstory Grace was imagining in the lyric:
"Have a ball at the Whitney
With your friends, all so pretty"
Go to www.whitney.org and imagine Grace tripping out on all that creativity, but also noticing the people so impressed with how pretty they are! That gives context for her fear, and anger, about being called boring. All with one word. Poetry.
    And your new look? Fableous!!

About her pauses... she was 12 on AGT. Her second song was "beautiful thing" that we all know she wrote for her sister. She starts the song with a statement "you think that you know my heart"... then pauses and starts with a whole new tempo. No one does that at any age. That is completely new. Then she sprinkles dramatic pauses throughout. She has an almost magical way with pauses and dynamics and in this early video you can really see her without production th-cam.com/video/IfciQKQBT0s/w-d-xo.html. Then a year later at 13, she transformed "look what you made me do" th-cam.com/video/LmVJfPggUzk/w-d-xo.html. around 2:30 in that video she is singing to silence and just a few notes... She can pull a room into her by singing softly with almost no music behind her... Her use of dynamics, pauses, changes of tempo and emotional vocal effects is so natural and so amazing ... one just need sit back and go on the journey.

This song, from what Grace has told in her posts, is the first in which she completed the instrumental scoring before it went into production. She has recently posted several examples of works that she was producing at home with Garage Band software. This may be her first published work from those efforts; An historical footnote. You may find it interesting to react to the studio release for those very reasons. The instrumentation is brilliant, complex, and has so well a concordance with the story as Grace herself. It is also the first production that has her band members playing on the tracks: Melissa Dougherty on guitar, and Nolan Franks on trumpet. Been enjoying the analysis in all your reactions. Haven't hit any clams.

Regarding Grace “hanging in the air” during her pauses. This is spot on. It is the uniqueness of her voice that has the ability to carry an emotional charge that is rarely found in a singer - especially one so young. This is why her best live recordings are her “unplugged” versions or just her with her uke. The recent three song “concert” she did from her bedroom for the Billboard fundraiser is incredible because it is just Grace, her uke, and her voice. She is hilarious in her rambling between songs and then she sends chills down your spine with her vocals.
There is something interesting to point out about Mellisa’s background vocals as well. Mellisa has a sweet refined tone. The polish of it in contrast to Grace’s blunt-object-wrapped-in-satin tone (which I originally described way back in 2016 as “the ripping of angel wings 😬) creates yet another very cool aspect. You can really see this on Grace’s NPR’s Tiny Desk performance when it is just Grace and Mellisa. (By the way, that has her best version of Darkness on the Internet.)

First of all, congratulations on your "new" intro !!
Of course you are right, if you want to "hear" and "lead" Grace Vanderwaal, you can only do this in a "relaxed atmosphere" !!
I hope that it's not just me
BUT when I see your "enthusiasm" "amazement" and honest "admiration" for Grace, I feel like a "proud father" who realizes how far his "little girl" has gone !!!
I'm not sure you understand that, but I've seen Grace grow up (if you will) and it has become an "important" part of my life !!
    (Gosh ... I hope Dave doesn't read this!) 😰😬
Anyway, in any case you did a great job "again" and please, please don't let us wait that long again !! 🙏😅😂
One more thing, I got your video of "House of Gold"
    Seen Twenty One Pilots !!
You may be interested to know that Grace "covered" this song when she was 12 years old !!
Check it out, it will blow your mind !! 🤯😂
Stay safe, stay at home! James T 🇩🇪

Or "is it ok if I go out with the guys even though it's our anniversary?" and we answer "go on, I don't care" and we care.. a lot.. and you better not go... lol

All the songs on Letters vol. 1 seem to be about the same relationship. Grace totally enamoured of a guy who is so beautiful but whom she'll gladly waste time with even if the relationship has no future, who takes her for granted and only dates her to show her off to his friends(Poser), and spends more time with his friends than he does with her in the city. And now she can't stand being with him even though she irrationally still loves him. (I Don't Like You) Well, at least Grace got some inspiration for brilliant songs out of it. Love your reactions; passionate--like Grace.

Grace has a problem. Years from now, someone will ask her to put together an album called "The Best of Grace VanderWaal". That's all she has ever done. Their are no flip side songs or "b" side of a 45. I love this live performance of "the City. The "letters Vol 2" will be 180 degrees from the Vol 1. Be ready for a big change, very soon.
Hey you got rid of the echo, and nice background too. Almost clinical.
