    Many designers are guilty of appropriation. Carolina Herrera was called out by the Mexican government for using in their resort wear collection designs inspired by indigenous women with absolutely no credit nor compensation. While some view this as stifling creativity, I disagree. Go ahead, appreciate and be inspired by other’s culture and creativity, but do give them credit, and do COMPENSATE them. It’s called Respect.

    As a Greek now I am scared. The fashion loves Greece. Hermes is the name of a Greek God. Nyx is the Greek word for night. Nike is named by the famous statue of Nike of samothrake (stolen from the French and excibited in louvre). Also Versace used the Greek Medusa as a trademark. Imagine what Kim could do if she wants something Greek :(

    • @jencasey316
      @jencasey316 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So true - at least the other companies used Greek terms to pay respectful homage to Greek people and culture. I read somewhere that Nike specifically chose that name to get people to think their sneakers could help you run as fast as the ancient Greeks because the founders held them as the paragons of physical prowess.

    • @Ersa0431

    • @jencasey316
      @jencasey316 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Ersa0431 Hermès is a high end (aka REALLY expensive) French luxury fashion house, and to be really fair to them - they didnt completely take their name from Greek mythology, it actually has an accent over the second e and is the last name of the founder of the house and its original designer (Thierry Hermès) - the fact that the name is close to the Greek god's name I'm sure has helped them but I cant blame him for wanting his name on his brand and you cant exactly pick your own last name (especially in Europe in the 1800's - he was born in 1801 and died 1878). He founded the brand in 1837 as a saddle maker and then expanded into other luxury leather and then silk products (home and fashion). Nyx is a make up brand that is the same quality and price point (maybe a little more inexpensive) as MAC but geared more towards fun looks and going out/night life. Just from their products they seem to be more inspired by modern Greek resorts and vacations and nightlife than mythology - its more like if a German brand named themselves "Night" and took inspiration from the NYC club and bar scene (or LA or Vegas).

Barring the controversy from Japan (which I completely understand - thank you for your detailed and comprehensive explanation), I find that SKIMS is actually a much better name for that line and what it is. Much more catchy, less generic and more representative of the product. She should almost thank Japan for the controversy - it lead her to a better choice for her brand name!

    Such an interesting blog Justine. I love how you explained things. Sadly, there´s a lot of people in this world who wants to look as unnatural as Kim Kardashian (I am proud that I've never watched that show and don't even know the names and gossips of that family). Also, most of us are puppets of the people that you mention, among others in politics and so on (it sounds like a big conspiracy, but it might well be).
    Love your poise. Great video!

    Thank you for yet another clear and 'well-tempered' video! In response to your open question, I would say that the fashion industry needs to straighten out its use of Native American and First Nations fashion and objects. Both in the case of specific names (such as moccasin), some general fashion elements (leather fringes, jewelry, decorations, feathers), and more importantly in cases where models and fashion photographs include sacred elements of First Nations culture, such as eagle feathers, blended inappropriately with seductive behaviors, etc.

    I think your analysis is absolutely correct. Honestly, I find it really disheartening that the Kardashians are so idolized in my "culture" (ugh). They may be very intelligent in the way they market themselves but they are completely barren of any authenticity or any wider view of life. To me they indicate a larger trend that is really disturbing, but I also know they aren't going anywhere anytime soon, so I do my best to just ignore them.

    In Australia we have 'Ugg boots' which refers to any sheep's wool slippers. They are widely worn here and produced by Australian companies. However the term 'Ugg boot' was copyrighted by an American company and the term now can't be used by any other company that produces them even though it was a generally used term here and not a brand name. They are obviously not as culturally significant as a kimono or saree but it is an example of what can happen when a foreign company copyrights a word used widely in a specific country.

I normally don't follow this gossipy business, but her ex husband Robert Shapiro's next wife sold his diary to an America media source (what was she thinking). It contained a psychological evaluation of Kris that Robert had done when they were divorcing. I did read it b/c it was a factual evaluation done by a doctor. It was chilling. She is a verified narcissist, and I will say, what you see is what you get, there is nothing deeper behind the public face.

      Kimono is clothing worn on the outside, and shapewear is underwear worn on the inside.
      Plus, Kim's shapewear line is clearly targeted at women that want to create a trim and curvy figure, which the vast majority of Japanese women don't want and what a kimono also doesn't create (a kimono creates the coveted slim and small-waisted look).

    Thank you Justine. I agree with all your conclusions. I have never understood this family’s popularity. The kindest comment I can make about the people following this family is that they are naive and easily duped. I have never watched or “followed” their bizarrely public lives, therefore I cannot be an informed dissenter. But I am quite happy to stay above it all! Thank you for your ever thoughtful and educational content.

      Carline Torweihe .....I am not saying the family is naive, they are most definitely not! I’m concerned with all the people that follow AND believe the self-promoting hype coming from this family.....which I think we can all agree is all about money, money, money.

      I think I have watched perhaps 5 minutes of all the Kardashians shows. I did watch the series about Caitlyn's first year as a female which I found more interesting than all the rest of the family combined. The embarrassing public demonstrations, the ridiculous names the babies are given, and all the rest of it are just not of any interest for me. I am with you, Silvia, I don't understand their popularity.

      I agree. As a researcher, creator and founder of an organic skin care company, it has been frustrating, to say the least. As someone in the trenches actually creating a quality product line and working her fingers to the bone to establish a company without the backing that these celebrities have where they throw their name on a quantity of questionable quality products that they then pretend to have created has been chilling. I commented in a longer post on here if you want to see my take on the topic Justine brings up.

      Am I the only one who thinks that the word Kimono would have been genius if it hadn't been a word for a Japanese clothing already? I mean, it's a portmanteau of the words Kim and Mono, and the undergarment that she's launching is a one-piece and also looks MONOchrome when it matches the wearer's skin perfectly. That's what I originally thought when I heard the name. However it's of course weird now that we know the same word is commonly used for another style of clothing, so it's better that she changed it, but I still liked the original idea.

    • @carolynb8816
      @carolynb8816 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      @@siri8748 Honestly, I think you have much more thought to the name than Kim or her team ever did. Kimonos are pretty well known traditional garments and there is no way Kim (or at least her marketing team and lawyers) did not know this...and I believe Justine mentioned this....and the fact that she probably only did this to create controversy and launch her product - that is the genius part.
