I come back here every once in a while when one of my normal TH-cam holes leads back to ES... like it so often does. My God, this is an absolute monster version of "Southern Belle". I'm a guitar player and by no means does that make me more qualified than the next person on what is good music and what is not but, it possibly does make me more qualified to speak on the skill required and how incredible the playing is here. To hit every note without a single blunder on a progression that requires so much technical ability is truly astonishing to watch. The tempo and picking attack is ferocious and the interplay of the right and left hand leaves me speechless. There are not words to accurately explain how difficult it is. To know all four of his fingers on his right hand are picking perfectly timed individual notes while his left hand changes chords at what is an almost comical, staged pace ia a marvel of musicianship. The "F" part with the single note slide is just insane to play so cleanly.. every time..... To me, what might be the most amazing part of Elliott's playing is that he has a completely unique style; particularly his nearly impossible to duplicate pickless, right-hand approach that makes many of his songs impossible to accurately reproduce without first learning this highly advanced technique... Then and only then can you "start to properly approximate his playing style". I have seen exceptional players attempt to cover this song overdubbing 4 or 5 guitar parts and they still never get all the nuance, harmonics and overtones Elliott gets here on his single Yamaha acoustic while scrunched up on some weird kitchen chair.. When considering the peak of his musical ability he sincerely might be the most under appreciated and underrated guitar player.. ever. A genius without question..
Talked to my fiance who is a huge Elliot Smith fan and he says this is actually one of the saddest most tragic period for Elliot and this footage is him at one of his lowest points. This was one of his last performances and the heartbreak is clear in his voice. His last performance he did not finish one single song but he did try. He is one worth really paying attention to. RIP ES. We hope the exit has brought you happiness.
Megan Follett Just so ya know. this was recorded in Olympia in 1999. He played plenty of shows after this (on the Figure 8 tour in 2000 anyway, after that they become more sporadic). Low point or not, I'd say it's one of the better concerts I've heard of his.
yeah yer prolly one of those people who thinks he's saying omen not almond in kings crossing. lol jk. i know he says angeles. this came across as dickish but its not supposed to. ah!
If I could play guitar like Mr. Smith, I'd die a happy woman

Elliott at the top of his game right here. Probably my favorite live performance
i love his blunders and messes-up; he's so shy and voleranble
i love that happiness ending acapela
oh elliott dont be so bumedup i love u as is
The end of Happiness...so good ! I love this man!
miss him so much
And we didn't even know him, I miss him too.
tanaya hathen I miss him everyday. I fucking love him. I would die for him, and I never met the guy...
this performance is HUGE
He put his whole heart into Easy way out, outstanding vocal performance
so cool when he messes up the chords at the end of happiness and just ends it a cappella
what seems to elliott a fuck-up in happiness is so moving all his "fuck-ups"(angeles) are actually fantastic
It's amazing how much weight he feels while performing. He has no idea how well he's doing.
miss you
so glad to meet you angel eyes
Sure do miss Elliott Smith.....
R. I. P.
what a bizarre looking chair he's sitting on

schwarzblatt yep you're spot on. Trying to find the full version of the movie released in 2014. Sadly all the ones we found were spam linked.
+Megan Follett itunes
His last show was not one of those messed up ones, he was quite cheery and played well. The train wrecks were in 2002.
Is this Yo Yo A Go from another angle and camera?
Man, what kind of phone did they record this on?
:)
Do you still need to know how to eat a pomegranate?
The fanciest chair for the fanciest guy.
