I wanted to thank everyone for the feedback on this video. For those of you wondering I will be doing an analysis video on Monster Hunter Portable 3rd for my next retrospective video.
Please as long as this one, I finally decided to give sunbreak a try after having bought the expansion on release (amazing expansion btw) and this was the pefect background video for my endgame grind. Loved all the detail, great video man.
the frick dude autotracker was in mhfu how you gonna start off a 7 hour retrospective with false information. Followed up by contradicting yourself by mentioning it 2 mins later i guess is in some way an improvement.
Never forget how I need ANCIENT POTIONS to beat congalala the first time when I was a kid. Still Carted twice. I'm going through Freedom Unite after 11 years and I'm shocked at how good it feels to play. Old monster hunter was just different. You almost go into a trance when playing
Right? People call it clunky all the time, but whenever I play old MH, it always feels good. Even the PS2 games, once you get used to it. Really, the only problem would be the camera.
I haven't finished the video yet, but I wanted to add to your "why do we get rarity 1 bone weapons from the former village hunter?" - point at 30:00. If you read the Monster Hunter manga you'll see that most hunter's jobs are exactly what you're describing, they're merely fighting off Giadrome or Bullfangos. In Monster Hunter Orage, one of the Monsters they have to fight very early on is a Rathian and one of the main characters, who's described as the best hunter in the village, wants to flee immediately as she reckons they don't stand a chance against The Queen of the Skies. This is a low rank Rathian by the way. Lore wise most hunters barely stand a chance against Yian Kut-Ku and we as the player are just super duper overpowered in every game.
With this context the ace hunters surviving agians the gore magala in 4U makes them look more capable than I saw them as… so i refuse to acknowledge this since i really dont like 4/4U XD
The reason monsters are already on the map is because your cohoot is scouting the map for you, same reason why you can search for specific item gather points as well as spirbirds and endemic life
One thing I REALLY miss with this era of Monster Hunter is the way they mix up monster part requirements for each piece of armor or weapon. This naturally makes the player hunt different targets when making their set. Unlike today, where you pretty much just need to hunt one monster (in most cases) when making a non-mixed armor set.
@@kurosan0079 YES your so right. I love is so much when weapons are made out of the mats of multiple monsters like the Gaelic Flame being made out of Rathalos and Kushala Daora. by far my favorite Longsword in the game
Old MH games surely hits different man. Although I started on MH Portable, but most of my early MH hours were on this game (MHP2/P2G). Good time back then.
2:06 just want to say here that there were 3 alternative ways to track a monster aside from paintballs in MFHU. First being the Phsychoserum a consumable that is available at the start of the game from the wyverian trader, 2nd being a particular skill obtained from your Felyne (can't find the name for it rn) and the last being the guild balloon that is present for most quests. Not to mention that after the first hunt of a monster most would be able to predict where it was going to go/be.
I was already a fan of Monster Hunter before Freedom Unite came out, but Freedom Unite was the first one that I got my friends into. By the time we moved on from it, all 4 members of our group had over 1000 hours on our main saves.
I spent so many hours in this game and had a lot of fun. It's nice to watch this video during dinner and feel the nostalgia. I loved Monster Hunter World but MHFU has a special place in my heart. Thanks for your work man.
I had a hardcore gamer friend who was totally into monster hunter. I bought unite and holy damn was it hard. I remember struggling. Nothing felt worse than carting 3 times after spending 30+ minutes getting bodied. I remember checking so many tutorials (which back then were not nearly as detailed as we have now). Switching to GS to kill the damn plesioth. I got through most G-rank but never ended up killing ukanlos/fatalis. I should go back and prove myself!
I really feel that starting comment about the MH series going backwards, and I fully agree. The monsters are getting more and more insane and 'anime' feeling; they're getting further and further away from anything remotely believable. The whole game is missing out on mechanics that were 'annoying' on the surface, but weirdly fun, like having to keep up paint-balls on a monster to track it, or having to gather things and it actually being a thing you had to put time and effort into. I feel like they're streamlining everything with each new Monster Hunter game. It's just getting simpler, and simpler, and focused more on just boss fights with pretty atmosphere, instead of actually 'hunting' a monster. The whole 'hunt' part of monster hunter is slowly becoming 'battle a monster' because anything akin to hunting an actual creature is slipping further and further away. It's why MHFU will always be my favourite MH game. It's truly a perfect example of what MH was, and should continue to be within reason.
@@Terrordacturne I also feel like they just give away rare items in the new games where in the older games it would take hours of farming to get that 1% drop making it feel so much more rewarding
This Video is a treat :) As someone with 900-1000 h in this game a couple of tips for newcomers to MHFU: - Make a habit to collect honey at the farm after each quest! - The movement speed buff from the hunting horn makes it one of if not the easiest (melee) weapon because it makes it way easier to reposition yourself without sheathing your weapon!
Thanks for the video. It's also refreshing to see fellow hunter who also started with freedom/portable. Way to much content creators started with Tri and don't appreciate strongest instalments in MH series (Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd).
There's something insanely satisfying with old MH when you try to squeeze as much out of it's clunky mechanics as much as possible, especially the weapons.
I remember playing MHFU on a busted up used PSP as a 20-something year old. Village Lunastra was the last thing I faced with that darn drifting thumb pad. I'm really contemplating retrying MHFU on PPSSPP because the control issues were really the only thing keeping me from playing further. It got me into Monster Hunter as a whole alongside Tri.
So, this is exactly the video I had been waiting for! I've just started going down this rabbit hole with my PSP, and this is my first Monster Hunter Game, I've ever played. So I lack even the most basic knowledge about this series, and the amount of information I received from this video is invaluable. This retrospective finally gave me the confidence to accept my love for Bowguns. I always felt a little guilty for playing Bowgun because people feel like playing Gunner isn't actually playing MonHun but seeing how you nonchalantly talk about it gives me hope. My most used weapons are still HH and GL but the Bowguns hold a special place in my heart that I wasn't comfortable expressing.
very well done on this. seriously, good work. I listen while I fall asleep, so it's gonna last me days. thanks for the effort, man. you're appreciated.
FU is such a good game, I remember being stuck on giadrome and bulldrome and not knowing how to even mine or gather stuff because it has no button prompts lmao. I didn't even know how to climb ledges, but after getting to know the game I was hooked like no other game has managed to.
This was my first MH and man this vid brings back some memories. The village, the farm, the kitchen, the room ahhh the introduction to plesioth hip check. I wouldn’t have sold my psp if my mh mem card stick didn’t got corrupted.
40:00 oh i remember well the treasure hunting quests once i carved a daimyo hermitaur jewel and while i carried it back to base i got staggered by a melynx and the jewel shattered so -full of hellish fiery rage- i hunted down like 30 more daimyos until i carved a jewel again, genociding melynx along the way and finally i was able to take home my price unite was wild
Impressive video! As clunky and old as the first 2 gens of Monster Hunter are, there's still a great deal of content to analyze, and you, the Madman himself, did it, and still took the time to record, organize and showcase your experience alongside your own thoughts. That really does require a lot of praise. So, congratulations, and thank you for giving us 7+ hours of good time. To remember the memories and to celebrate the franchise we all know and love.
Oops, I found the video I'll be coming back for the next days. I started with MHP3rd due to an acquaintance who wanted to play it. Those hunts together and hardships made us friends. And after p3rd we went to Freedom Unite. Both were amazing experiences and I remember them fondly :)

at 2:35:00 the cool thing about the veggie elder in the orignal PS2 title is he is actually very useful for getting certain materials that are harder to obtain than the ones you trade him. For instance you can trade him piscine jaws for medium monster bones which are rather annoying to get a lot of compared to piscine jaws which are payed out in droves by the desert cephalos quest.
I shall enjoy watching this video over the next couple of weeks. Mighty thanks for such an epic video on this. We second fleet hunters, we never forget to look back to where we began our hunts.
Loved the video. Great content, very informative and great to listen to while I farmed Thunder Sacs from Red Khezus in Freedom 1 lol. Still got 7 to go for my Kirin Bolt Indora and I'm 5 hours into the video lmao.
I have been playing the hell out of Unite lately on my vita. Such a good game. I started off playing through Monster Hunter Freedom on the PSP. Freedom was a phenomenal game and it's amazing how they could fit such a well-rounded gaming experience into such a small, handheld package. But Unite tops it and makes so many quality of life changes from Freedom. You're a legend for making such a comprehensive video on Unite. I consider it to be THEE definitive early gen Monster Hunter game.
MHFU was my first foray into the series and I was in love from the start. The game loop was what really drew me in, fighting monsters and crafting better gear from them. So simple but effective. I've played every entry since! Thanks for this hit of nostalgia
Well done man! MHFU was also my first deep dive into the MH universe. I had a blast reliving it in its entirety through your video! Keep up the great work!
I love these old retrospectives of games I'll never play, seeing the nostalgia y'all have for old titles is great and i much prefer to watch others go through it in detail. I'm out of town and had a sudden tug to start a new save in world and this is just enough to carry me through bed time until i get home lol
What you brough up about chameleos is correct, but i'll say, when he goes invisible in rise he still disappears on the minimap, he just doesn't go invisible when idle like he used to, but him going invisible still plays quite the part in the fight as you need to pay attention to the particle effects and sounds since it likes going invisible when moving around quickly.
Thank you for making this, crazy amount of effort. I still remember how I celebrated back then when I solo beat the 2 black diablos quest on G rank after failing many times, such a difficult game back then.
Man I miss the old ecology videos. It was such a rewarding experience to defeat a monster and unlock their ecology video, giving you a really cool glimpse of what the monster were like in the wild. I wish they would bring these back!!
I remember playing half translated japanese ROM hacks of Monster Hunter Freedom back in 2005. I'll never forget the satisfaction I had when I first beat Yian Kut Ku 😅 Oldschool Bulldrome headache and Plessi hitbox were a thing back then.
Is it really that much better? Some people say it's the best monster hunter! I never played it. I want to emulate it on my switch, but it seems the switch is too weak for that y😿
@@DieEineMieze 4U to this day is unmatched for me. Its the last game with the old school simplistic fighting system that I adore, but with just enough time to iron out the kinks of MHF2 and MH3U. (3U is still great too)
As a Monster Hunter fan who never played the first or second generations I must say this this video really inspires me to play them. It was a blast to watch!
Super quick and simple damage formula explanation; Each weapons attack combo has a Motion Value (MV) that represents a percentage of the true raw damage of the weapon. For instance, if a weapons attack has a MV of 30 it will do 30 percent of its true raw max damage with that attack. You just subtract the MV from each monsters parts HV (hit value, because yes each monsters individual part takes a different fucking percentage of damage) and bam you get your damage.
Pretty sure I was about 14 when I gave the original MHF a try, initially hated it, still have teeth marks in my screen over a Khezu. Now it's easily one of my favorite franchises of all time, only franchise I can pre-order and be confident about the results
I remember getting so good at killing Kut-Ku to the point when I fought Yian-Garuga I managed to hunt it without carting. Old MH rewards relentless diligence.
An almost seven and half long analysis video about MH Feedom unite? SIGN ME THE FRICK IN! MH:FU was the very first MH game i ever played,it made me fall in love with the series,i still play it on my PSVita to this day,and is one of my top 3 MH games ever!
Playing Bow/Bowgun back in the older games when ranged classes took more damage is crazy. Playing HBG without shield mod is even crazier, though I guess its different when playing in a group where you arent constantly drawing aggro.
One piece of information is that Tri on the Wii actually had an optional configuration with the original MH1-2 control scheme with the silly right analog stick controls. I used it evvery once in a while back in the day, just to goof off.
Pronounciation and ecology need some work but damn am I enjoying this video a lot 3.5h in!!! To clarify, elder dragon is a classification based on power and uniqueness, not any heritage. Tigrex is more primitive because it’s like something between a sugar glider and a fully flying bat. Implying that wyverns evolved from a land dwelling ancestor. [edit] ok so after like 4 days I have finally finished this video, and it was amazing!!! I would have liked to see at least a small section gushing over the INCREDIBLE use of Proof of a Hero when fighting Lao, the only thing that makes that fight fun and all the amazing moments that can bring. This got me to power up my PSP again, sadly stick drift makes it unplayable so I had to resort to an emulator. All the memories that flooded into my mind was like interacting with an object that triggers a cutscene, it was amazing.
Miss this game, played it and cleared almost every mission outside and in with non g rank gear, one of which you get as a new quest for outside when you complete the game and unlock the new 3 high tier quests outside you gain a special quest called Monster Hunter which for the life of me never had a chance to complete as its a true test of your skills
Hello good sir. I don't know who you are, but when I see a 7h video on MHFU and a Malzeno on your profile picture, I tend to believe I'm in good company.
I find it odd people are upset about the length of the video, you literally say in the beginning you can watch it by chapter if you choose; you could also yknow... not watch the video? Give the guy a break it's clearly a passion project.
I’ve watched all 7 hours and 19 minutes and I’m glad to say I’m a subscriber now. hope there’s gunna be more in the future for old and new monster hunter games I would love to see them. And you made me wanna replay my first monster hunter game which is this game mhfu I have it on my psvita I just need to get a new charger for it lmao
i think the reason you can see where the monster is at all times in rise is because of your Cohoot (the owl pet) that you throw into the air before every hunt
Thank you for this video. You had to repeat yourself quite a few times on similar subjects, which can easily happen with a video of this length. I started Monster Hunter in Gen1 on the first PSP game (though I also played the Demo on a modded PS2). My overall assessment is that new is better - I could never go back to the simplistic movesets of the monsters and the binary grinding of Oldhunt. But that isn't to say these games no longer have value, quite the opposite. They stand as the monument of inspiration and quality we as Monster Hunters have to expect.
I think the thing I liked the most about mhfu and earlier monster hunter games was that they felt a little more grounded and real, I almost like how mundane they felt in comparison to newer titles
It's definitely way harder to be a gunner in the older games, but man, an HBG with spread shot can demolish most low and high rank hunts as easy, or just easier than top tiers like DB, GS, or Hammer
@@allhandsondik7803 are you joking? Gun was literally a free win card It changed the win requirement from skill to money spend on ammo Everything dies to piercing thunder eventually
It may be harder for someone new to gunning especially if you don't know what ammo is best to use. With the right set, gun and ammo as well as knowledge of monsters weaknesses/weak points yes gun is def a free win card
Small correction: I remember when in mutliplayer as a duo your comrades can come too to make a party of 4. If you are doing multiplayer with 3 hunters or more no comrades will come only as duo. At least that's how I remember playing with my brother
Not sure if many people know this, but in the first 10-15 min of a hunt in the old games, if you waved at the airship, it would locate the monster for you.
I have the next 5 days to myself and I am SO excited to drink in these 8 hours of long form content to be honest. MHFU is easily my favorite MH to date- after starting in MHF2- so i'm very excited to see where your video leads

Always love seeing Retrospective of MHFU ❤! I'm glad u made one Samurai 😃! Great coverage!! GG 👍 😊
Hopefully, in Wilds, the monsters can display more dynamic behaviors. If they won't give us ecology videos back, they could at least give us that.
Can you imagine that this game was so unpopular back then due to its difficulty, specially the absence of auto-lock feature?
Hay una habilidad que bloquea automatico en MHF y MHFU.
I remember playing half translated japanese ROM hacks of Monster Hunter Freedom back in 2005. I'll never forget the satisfaction I had when I first beat Yian Kut Ku 😅 Oldschool Bulldrome headache and Plessi hitbox were a thing back then.
Play Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Now. You NEED to. That retrospective will be 14 hours instead of 7💀
Is it really that much better? Some people say it's the best monster hunter! I never played it. I want to emulate it on my switch, but it seems the switch is too weak for that y😿
It is trust me, Ive played every monster hunter and 4 ultimate just has this feeling to it that you have to play to understand. @@DieEineMieze
@@DieEineMieze 4U to this day is unmatched for me. Its the last game with the old school simplistic fighting system that I adore, but with just enough time to iron out the kinks of MHF2 and MH3U. (3U is still great too)
Leaving my comment for the algorithm 👍🔥 excited to watch these 7 hours!
BIG Love. Loved the whole Journey with u. Thx for Ur Effort ♥️🔥
As someone who had their "I finally get it" moment in rise. Mhfu is my absolute favorite game in the franchise.
Ok insane video very brutal effort i respect you
As a Monster Hunter fan who never played the first or second generations I must say this this video really inspires me to play them. It was a blast to watch!
Good vid wish it was longer
Awesome video my man!!!
i can tell your very passionate about monster hunter ! cant wait for WILDS to come out
Super quick and simple damage formula explanation; Each weapons attack combo has a Motion Value (MV) that represents a percentage of the true raw damage of the weapon.
Yoooooo my fav Mon Hun in an analysis. Hope they will make a remake/remaster
Fantastic video, cannot wait for the next retrospective.
An almost seven and half long analysis video about MH Feedom unite? SIGN ME THE FRICK IN!
MH:FU was the very first MH game i ever played,it made me fall in love with the series,i still play it on my PSVita to this day,and is one of my top 3 MH games ever!
TIGEREX AND NARCUGA ARE NEW MONSTERS FOR ME
nah but for real, insanely well done video
Can't wait to watch this video over the course of a week
Fantastic video on essentially my fav game of all time mhf2
Miss this game, played it and cleared almost every mission outside and in with non g rank gear, one of which you get as a new quest for outside when you complete the game and unlock the new 3 high tier quests outside you gain a special quest called Monster Hunter which for the life of me never had a chance to complete as its a true test of your skills
Hello good sir.
I don't know who you are, but when I see a 7h video on MHFU and a Malzeno on your profile picture, I tend to believe I'm in good company.
this video is truly a masterpiece
I remember this game from when i was a pre-teen, creating my purfect huntress. One of the best games on the PSP in the late 2000s
Really well made video, thanks for this
My strongest memory about MHFU ist the hand cramp I would get from the prolonged claw grip around the psp.
I find it odd people are upset about the length of the video, you literally say in the beginning you can watch it by chapter if you choose; you could also yknow... not watch the video? Give the guy a break it's clearly a passion project.
Sometimes the yt recommendations really hit the spot omg
Went to sleep and had a really nice elaborate dream with this playing in the background so thanks for that 🫂🤝🏽
I love this game to death, the essence of monster hunter
I’ve watched all 7 hours and 19 minutes and I’m glad to say I’m a subscriber now. hope there’s gunna be more in the future for old and new monster hunter games I would love to see them. And you made me wanna replay my first monster hunter game which is this game mhfu I have it on my psvita I just need to get a new charger for it lmao
I remember little Cris spending 1 week to beat Tigrex 😅, it will always be my favorite monster
i think the reason you can see where the monster is at all times in rise is because of your Cohoot (the owl pet) that you throw into the air before every hunt
in freedom unite you can wave at the blimp and it will marks the monster momentarily
Bro usin guns as solo on old gen mh... Bro is built different💀
Its quite literally the easiest weapon what are you talking about
It's definitely way harder to be a gunner in the older games, but man, an HBG with spread shot can demolish most low and high rank hunts as easy, or just easier than top tiers like DB, GS, or Hammer
@@allhandsondik7803 are you joking?
Gun was literally a free win card
It changed the win requirement from skill to money spend on ammo
Everything dies to piercing thunder eventually
It may be harder for someone new to gunning especially if you don't know what ammo is best to use. With the right set, gun and ammo as well as knowledge of monsters weaknesses/weak points yes gun is def a free win card
@@SAMURAI_3001it's almost like the game rewards you for preparation and comprehension huh? 😆 Ignore them, you're doing it right. 👍
Tiger Rex?!? Im seriously doubting my memory now
Yeah the carapecean being called a Capricorn threw me for a loop
Still better than the pronunciation World gave it…
Best way to end the argument between Ti-rex and Tee-rex
It’s TEE-GREX
@@Flameandfireclan not anymore
Small correction: I remember when in mutliplayer as a duo your comrades can come too to make a party of 4. If you are doing multiplayer with 3 hunters or more no comrades will come only as duo. At least that's how I remember playing with my brother
I don't believe so my friend
Not sure if many people know this, but in the first 10-15 min of a hunt in the old games, if you waved at the airship, it would locate the monster for you.
Only OG's knew it.
@@DieEineMieze lol don't forget about the Claw.
I have the next 5 days to myself and I am SO excited to drink in these 8 hours of long form content to be honest. MHFU is easily my favorite MH to date- after starting in MHF2- so i'm very excited to see where your video leads
watched the whole video.
really couldn't have done it in one sitting, but loved it all the same.
PatricianTV mention, hellll yea
Awesome 7.5 hours, thank you
First it was the 3 hour Dos review, now it’s the 7 hour Freedom Unite review.
Next is a 24h retrospect on the franchise
Finna make a 12 hour monster hunter 4 ultimate video @@corndogsalami
@@corndogsalaminah, we need the 48 hours monster hunter 1 retrospective
And now we get to re-experience it all in VR!
I'll forever remember the day I figured out I could wave to the wyverian in the balloon
