  • Reynolds (who also went by Bob) Marchant was co-director of St. Paul Minnesota Civil Defense - a very important role in the Cold War era. As part of this role, Reynolds was apparently invited to Yucca Flats Nevada - the famous site of many nuclear tests. In particular in this interview he talks about the infamous “Doom Town” or “Survival Town” site where mock buildings, dummies as people stand-ins, and more were set up to evaluate the impact of the a nuclear explosion. I believe he was talking about the Apple-2 “shot” on May 5, 1955 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operati.... The date on the reel is 1955, though I think Marchant may have been mistaken about it being April vs. May. Either way it’s a fascinating description of an important part of the start of the US arsenal, and of course peak Cold War stuff.
The 2nd interview in the video is much more about Civil Defense - how important it is, how the people of St. Paul can get involved, etc.
