Partially inspired by your channel, I picked up a cheap F150 to fix up. I've never done anything like this except with my dad as a teenager. I just replaced the alternator and hood struts. Anything beyond my skill level I am outsourcing, but thank you for the boost in confidence that you and your channel have provided.
John Ross, you know you're gonna miss the train going by, especially since you got your own horn salute. Gabe and Josh are always fun to watch when you guy's are on a project. Jake is great to, hope he is getting over being shafted by the ex-wife, that girl will regret doing him so wrong one day, because Jake is a good guy, and i hope that he moves on and finds a girl who is nice, and also likes car's. G-d bless y'all.
She needs a lil more refresh she’s worthy now some touch ups on the paint good cleaning great lil car I basically never heard of before you guys bought it a year or so ago
That was exactly the same thing that happened to mine and why I'm stuck with an alternator now! There was a bad crimp on the fusable link and it failed on the way home from purchasing it.
The most irritating alternator failures are the ones that only fail when hot. They test great when cold but as the vehicle gets hotter the output drops off to nothing.
Impressive video and Gabe you are one Hell of a Veteran. I am a DAV and I understand. My 6.0 is modified has about 550hp and gets 18mpg on the highway and an 80-gallon tank. and Bang somebody give me a Heart. Jr Go get er dun. Love your channel. We watch with Nomad Internet. Make the Sky look Beautiful again. Truck was built in 2011 to the Specs. There are no door handles on the truck all electric that is the only way at a distance you can tell. I got smoke too, oil and drop spikes and a Zombie Hunting Stickers coming in the mail from Amazon with my Soldiers Medal License Plate.
Great Job, can you please provide more information on the 3D printed cup holder. I have the same problem with my cup holder on my redline and I would like to print a replacement. Thank you.
I hope Gabe is going to help you with the move after all the help getting that Sky back together. I also hope Gabe doesn't break any bones in the process 🤣
I used Marvel Oil in break-in lube. Their literature claims it puts a sort of polish on the bearings you don't get without. FWIW: I've done it with all my new cars and never had an oil-related issue, assuming regular maintenance
All new engines/rebuilds require 'dino oil' 7:10 for break-in periods. It allows friction surfaces to mate with one another, specifically: piston rings and bores. After the break-in period, synthetic oil can be used.
Yep he put it on the screen last episode, too. think the spec was first 500 miles. Does make me wonder though, my Subaru runs 0W-20 which is pretty slippery, think it actually came with dino too? Pretty sure it specifies synthetic normally.
had a customer replace his starter on an International 4700 and he couldn't get it started. batteries were super dead. 4 battery jump pack wasn't starting it. had to put it on 24V. got it in the shop. Found he hooked the dedicated alternator to starter stud positive wire bunched in with the grounds on the starter. white cables are a bad deal. always tie together your positives and grounds when replacing starter. otherwise you will mess up the wiring
In 60 years of owning all sorts of cars from the mundane to supercars, I have never had to replace an alternator. Back in the 1960's I did replace the dynamo on an Austin Healey 3000 with a 60 amp alternator, so that I could run 100W Cibié spot lights for rallying but the original dynamo was still working. On the TH-cam motoring channels I watch, US owners seem to have to be constantly replacing alternators. Is there something about US driving conditions that leads to these failures?
In the roughly 55-65 cars that i’ve owned/flipped/etc, the only vehicles that I’ve had consistent alternator failures on are Subarus. I have no idea why, but in the 12 or so I’ve owned, about 7 of them have needed alternators.
Thought maybe Europe was to blame for the wiring, but the car was made in DE. Makes me think of opening machine control cabinets and seeing a sea of wiring that's all the same color. Especially bad when the labels are on the terminal block and not the wires.
I'm pretty sure when replacing or repairing a hot wire it's a cardinal sin to use black for positive. No questions about that, whoever did this is going to Hell. For sure. Saved a couple hundred bucks too, that's a plus!
I agree if you live within 50 km of a wiring store, but my opinions on the "right" way to do things altered when I moved somewhere remote. It depends where the owner lived how forgivable that choice is.
7:11 there's a theory why most modern engines burn so much oil (especially those new DFI turbocharged motors). It's because they come with synthetic oil from the factory which lubricates so well that the rings can't seat properly and ultimately you see that 1 quart per 1000 mile oil burning. Not sure how true it is but I think a motor running conventional or break in oil is the best thing for the first few hundred miles or so.
Which turbo did you wind up going with? Bleeding the coolant circuit on LNF (or LDK as the case may be) can be a chore. There's a TSB that recommends installing a pair of check valves in the small coolant lines to aid in the process. YMMV.
New overflow tank cap? They are basically radiator caps and holding around 16psi until they fail and allow engine coolant boilout. Lots of ecotecs die from that $5 part. From all the break-in smoke, youre might need cataclean.
Many. 😁🍻 The last one was hovering around 350. This one is rated at 10 more due to its construction. With the tune, new turbo and fresh components I wouldn’t be surprised with 370. Obviously a dyno is in its future following the break - in period.
Tell Gabe to just hold on to the new alternator especially if they are that hard to find.He will need it at some point in the future

congrats you both definitely earned your Saturn Merit Badge for this one! Hope it is all the smiles per mile you expect
Congratulations Gabe.
And it's great to have a friend in JR.
🍻😉👍🏼
Can't have enough Gabe!
Sky is looking good. Tear down the old engine, it's always good to see what broke.
I used to work for Herzog! So cool to see on your video! 🚂
Great to see it all finished up, it’s a very cool little car!😎
I was hoping you post this tonight! Love these cars glad to see one back on the road!
Engine teardowns become my new favorite here! Lots of stuff to see and to learn with that! Mr. Ross, tear down this engine!
Dig the President Reagan reference!
Love to finally see the Sky back on the road. I am a proud Solstice guy!
It's so fun to watch and learn from you guys.
Always a fan of the engine tear downs . Interesting seeing what caused the failure
GABE'S SKY IS ON FIRE!
FIYAAAAAAAAA 🔥
Believe it or not I am living with Mr. Gabe Sanchez over in the video!
She needs a lil more refresh she’s worthy now some touch ups on the paint good cleaning great lil car I basically never heard of before you guys bought it a year or so ago
I love manual Saturn Redline Skys. I think the Sky looks way better then the Pontiac Solstice. I'd like to own one.
Congrats, Gabe!
Always entertaining and informative, scuse me while I kiss this Sky ! I think these are criminally underrated and beautiful little roadsters.
That was exactly the same thing that happened to mine and why I'm stuck with an alternator now! There was a bad crimp on the fusable link and it failed on the way home from purchasing it.
An alternator that passed an O'Reilly's test? Inconceivable! I didn't think the pass light worked on those machines.
🍻😂👍🏼
Gabe looking like a Boss!! In the thumbnail…
I do jingle bells in December on UP in LA

Sounds like thermal expansion causing a disconnect. It needs dismantling and checked.
We need more Gabe projects too!
Been a long haul Gabe. Congrats bud! 👍
🍻😉👍🏼
Love the video. Very informative. Maybe I won't ditch my Sky Redline.
Nothing like having to fight stupidity with those cables... Enjoy Gabe!!
Put me down as wanting a teardown video on any and all engines you replace!
That rwd ecotec layout is soooo much better than the transverse!!
I could work on that for days without needing a single beer. 🤣
Thanks!
I love you ❤️
Would love to see that Saturn engine tear down!

Great looking car.
Nice to see Gabe back in his Sky after all this time.
Nice to Gabe back in the channel.
I miss when JR would hop on his board to grab parts from the O'REILLYs. I think that's when he was still working out of his house.
The road at the shop is too rough for the skateboard 😥
@@WatchJRGo What about the scooter?
@@WatchJRGo Get a paramotor then fly it to/from O'Reilly's. Tucker Gott did fast food runs to McDonalds on his.
Gabe is good with the allusions to ancient pop.
I have never seen a train set up like that. That was really neat.
MOW, maintenance of way. They have some of the weirdest looking stuff. One day when the railgrinder goes by, hopefully, JR can get some video of that.
Great Job, can you please provide more information on the 3D printed cup holder. I have the same problem with my cup holder on my redline and I would like to print a replacement. Thank you.
JR posted a video a few years back about this fix. I believe there was a link to the company that made it.
Gabe content is the best content
Another great video from JR. Thanks
Good Evening John Ross
POV: You’re still following JR waiting for him to the John Deere crawler back together.
Might need it at the new place 😂
Facts 🤣
“Let’s make sure the hood lines up” slam! 😂
✌️
Hows gabe going to keep an eye on you at the smaller place?
I'm going to miss the shop, but I think that will all change once I see the new place.
I have a 07 redline auto. Is this a common problem because mine stalled why i was driving and i think its my alternator
I hope Gabe is going to help you with the move after all the help getting that Sky back together. I also hope Gabe doesn't break any bones in the process 🤣
Definitely gonna help.
Whether I stay in one piece remains to be seen!😂
Hey the real question is will you miss the train? Love the content bro
Love us some Gabe with those guns !!💪❤

John Good to see Gabe's Sky running again. Another great video. You didn't do the LS Fest this year?

Tear the engine down!! Always fun to see the insides…
Black positive cable on my VW battery, negative is orange. Crazy
Awesome !

Cool, his toy works and one less car in the warehouse, a win win for everyone. You fix everything with a BFH by the way...
Haha, hammer for the win 💪
If it doesn't work you can break something with it...
Congratulations Gabe, no more biking. See that did not take too long. Shameless O'Reilly's plugs. Still think he needs a Lotus Elise
Randy at AAR just got a Lotus
🍻😉👍🏼
I would love to see Gabe's old Sky engine torn down. It is a neat little car. I been watching since JR picked up that Sky
How did it operate before?
Yes. For the Saturn engine tear down.
That Sky aka Chevy Corvair needs a sweet 3.8 v6 or LS conversion :)
So it was a ground issue?
Yup. Color us surprised!!👍🏼😉
So, did you at least put some red shrink tubing on that wire?
Yup. Did that once I got home. 🍻😉👍🏼
in this episode, Ace and Gary hit the road again in their Duocar
Thought maybe Europe was to blame for the wiring, but the car was made in DE. Makes me think of opening machine control cabinets and seeing a sea of wiring that's all the same color. Especially bad when the labels are on the terminal block and not the wires.
SO of course, once JR sells the shop, the Railways plan to go on strike, which would mean a period of no train distractions :P
Where are you located?
The coolant needs to be filled to the seam of the coolant tank in order to keep the light off the dash...
Engine teardown! Also what did RPM end up claiming?
Yes
I'm pretty sure when replacing or repairing a hot wire it's a cardinal sin to use black for positive. No questions about that, whoever did this is going to Hell. For sure. Saved a couple hundred bucks too, that's a plus!
If you only have black wire, wrap it in red tape.

I went with RPM Motorsport’s K04 upgrade.
You should wrap that wire in red tape.
I always use dino oil during break-in. You want wear for seating.
I have the same laugh as you guys and now I realize why it made people laugh lol
I always thought the Sky was the best looking version of that platform.
Engine teardowns are always welcomed.
I want that car soooo bad!😳
yall stay close after the move - good friends are hard to find
Such a lucky Saturn sky, getting all that tlc
So JR how is it that you failed to convince him that the only solution was to do an LS swap?
Gabe is a HOTTIE 🔥🔥🔥
🍻😂👍🏼
