@@lionoffireraw Thank you for pointing these Biblical things out on your channel. Sometimes we just watch, listen to what a Church says and take it as truth. Especially when they read GODS word. Have you ever seen a poor pastor? They are usually rich because they take from the poor. James 5:1-6: 1 Come now, you rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver is rusted; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as if it were fire. You have heaped treasure together for the last days. 4 Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, cries: and the cries of them who have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5 You have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; you have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. 6 You have condemned and killed the just; and he does not resist you.
And at least two other NT verses back this up: "A man should lay aside a sum in keeping with his income," and "the gift is acceptable according to the giver's ability (paraphrased, I don't remember the exact phraseology).
Lord, help us to not give satan a stronghold by willfully continuing to sin. Help us to closely follow You and to be a blessing to many And not let hard times harden our heart, so we stay tenderhearted, comforting, uplifting, patient, honest, generous, being kind. Help us remember that difficult times the Lord uses as good to teach, strengthen, give us patience and to magnify Him by help we receive from others and by how we can endure, still staying close to Him, and suffering becomes eternal treasure so no pain is ever in vain unless we allow it to be.
Except if the original concept is not true and there is no reward, we suffer without reason. Difficult times are only exist by itself, you can learn a lot from it, you can use it to your gain but there is no one up there who can notice you and in the end suffering does not becomes eternal treasure because there is no treasure just suffering.
I remember the first time I heard this take on the widow giving up her last two coins explained exactly the way you just did. Our late pastor, Doug Heck, explained that this was about the religious leaders of the time taking advantage of their positions to extort the most defenseless and vulnerable in society, with neither care nor heart towards their prey. I had just begun to attend my current church (Grace Community Church, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma), which is non-denominational, yet our theology is Reformed/Calvinist. I also heard Pastor John MacArthur give the same exposition on this passage as you have; but it is true that many people, and not just the Health & Wealth (Blab it and grab it) scheister/preachers who take it out of context, but even many of our so-called Main-line denomination pastors as well. Good job on this Matt, well done!
I love how you put this story in context Matt, and reading it in entirety is a must because then it leads to misunderstanding about its meaning. Thank you for sharing with us. God bless you Matt 🙏🕊️💯
Ah, 'Prosperity Gospel'! Our pastor has very strong convictions about this, though he's restrained when preaching, but we all know how he feels about it. Those unscrupulous preachers who urge us to " quickly, go the phone!" to donate to their ministry. The Lord will be their judge.
Thank you Matt‼️ I don’t think I’ve ever heard a preacher put the emphasis on anything OTHER than the poor widow’s faith. She did have tremendous faith, no doubt. But surely that spin has been abused, it seems, for financial gain. Thank you for putting the emphasis where I believe, now, it belongs🙏‼️
I was playing in a worship band some years ago at a megachurch. They played a video of a young girl talking about the widow's mites and she said it was about rich people not giving enough money to the church. I was in the sound booth with the lead sound man at the time, so I told him "that's not what the story is about.". I then told him the correct interpretation. The next week the sound man told me that he passed on my info to church leadership at the Monday morning meeting. The pastor told everyone "it's just a fun video". 😂😂😂
One of the continuing problems of reading the Bible correctly is the somewhat subjective and arbitrary "chapter and versification" of the text. The original written accounts had no such divisions of the text. That was introduced in the seventeenth century, and hinders many people from reading everything in its full context, leading to much misunderstanding. Such a simple thing, but it causes many to stumble, misinterpret Scripture and remain in ignorance.
Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:2-3). Take care
Wow, I had just finished reading Luke 20, then prayed, then stumbled on this video immediately afterwards. Happy to have some correct thoughts on it. Thank you! 🙏 🕊️
Not sure what the "clickbait" person was talking about here. You, Matt delivered a msg and its context. Excellent. Most Pastors, forget context as well as, audience relevance. Too lazy to study with their topical preaching. That’s why I love expository. Good job Matt, as usual.
Thanks for this Matt. I have not seen this chapter of this perspective before. Even as you pointed and started reading the verses that I am seeing the links between what Jesus was saying before you uncover the verse.
Imagine how personal that might have been. She may have just then gotten to the point where in desperation she tossed those coins in there, hoping that God would see… and He did.
@@jaimiemadden590 Did he? He used her as an example of theft by leaders. Did he bless her with providing for her needs? We don't know. Read what God said through the apostles about giving: giving your last farthing was never encouraged in the early church.
Thank you for that revelation and also reading the scriptures before and after for a better understanding of what Jesus was actually teaching. I learned something new. Again, thank you brother.
Finally! It's the only video I've seen that understood it correctly! The last verse in Luke 20 about devouring widows out of their houses should not be the end of the chapter. The first verse in chapter 21 says, "As he looked up." As Jesus looked up, he saw an example happening of exactly what he just said in the last verse of chapter 20. The breaking things up into another chapter that you most likely have to turn the page for is misleading. Another example of this, which misleads people, is Matthew 24:14. Matthew 24:13&14 is a continued thought, but the breaking up and spacing of these two verses is misleading. Read them together and understand the message. Make Christ your teacher, not men, so that you are not deceived by men. It's what the New Covenant for gaining knowledge and forgiveness of sins is all about (Hebrews 8:6-13). It's how to truly be under Christ.
I am familiar with your interpretation but don't find it convincing. First, the immediately preceding section concerns the scribes (essentially, lawyers who interpreted the Mosaic Law) abusing their position to take advantage of widows. The scribes were not, per se, priests or part of the sacrificial system of the Temple. Their position was not directly instituted by God but of human origin. The scribes were likely of the Pharisee party, which was not the same as the priestly party (the Sadducees). The situation was different with the levitical priesthood and the Temple, which were indeed instituted by God and whose support by all classes of Israelites was required by God himself. The widow was not being manipulated by lawyers but freely contributing to the support of the Temple and its priesthood, as faithful Israelites were bound to do, by God himself. The widow wasn't being exploited but being freely generous in supporting the worship that God himself ordained. After all, Jesus was materially poor and had no place to lay his head; yet he willingly paid the Temple tax and revered the Temple itself. He submitted to the Law of Moses and participated in Temple worship. Why would Jesus regard this pious widow's action of supporting the Temple as an example of religious and legal exploitation? Freely and generously supporting the worship of God is not the same as being cheated by lawyers. This is here a twofold contrast: between those who are exploited by Mosaic lawyers in the name of religion, and those who freely give out of faith and love for God. The approval of the widow's generosity is juxtaposed with the prophecy of the destruction of the Temple because, even though the old system of bloody sacrifices was soon to pass away, the faith and love of the "anawim" (the lowly faithful ones in Israel) were not in vain, not wasted. The hope of the "anawim" (like the widow) is fulfilled in Christ, the True and Eternal Temple and High Priest and Sacrifice. So it is entirely fitting to use this account of the Widow's Mite to illustrate the truth that "God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Cor 9.7), of whatever social class or position.
@@SamsonZionist That is possible on the level of practical application but not, I think, in terms of what is being said about the widow and her actions in this context. She's not presented as one who is exploited by the unscrupulous. Devout widows were often vulnerable, but it's too sweeping to assume that that was necessarily the case in every biblical context. Consider this passage: "And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phan′u-el, of the tribe of Asher; she was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years from her virginity, and as a widow till she was eighty-four. She did not depart from the temple, worshiping with fasting and prayer night and day. And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks to God, and spoke of him to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem" (Lk 2.36-39). Ann was not a widow oppressed by the Temple or its priests but rather someone who lived faithfully in the hope of redemption and who loved the Lord's house. The widow who gives generously sounds like another Anna.
Exactly as you said. I also understand that there were three tithes, the third was for widows and orphans. Jesus hooked the Pharisees into supporting this widow for if she was on the street the next day without food or shelter the Pharisees would be under the public eye to provide for her need. That support would be short lived, once the crowds were gone so would their support. Interesting to note that tithing existed before Israel foolishly chose to have a king. Up until then there were no taxes of any kind. The tithes took care of everything, and God was their national defense department.
On a related note, I was a little disappointed to find out that I Timothy 1:7 ("For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.") is really not about generally having no fear, but about boldly preaching the Gospel. That is why some translations render the word for fear as timidity, which makes more sense when it is read in context. It makes me wonder how many other verses and passages are cherry picked to support a favorite doctrine rather than the immediate teaching from which it was taken. Context is key!
In a lifetime of experience, we may learn that poor folks knew the generosity of fellow poor folks. In their challenges the poor people knew what the other person was going thru. Often heard the needy understand that they had to give to others to receive God's blessing. They didn't have much hope without sharing with others in Jesus. Gid bless the truthseekers.
The same as what I have thought about these verses. The priests have conned hypocratically the people like the widow, who had a humble and obedient heart, to having accumulated so many riches in the Temple or in their homes. Jesus gave them more condemantions through the hands of Roman troops. The Temple was destroyed completely by fire. And Most of the priests were killed first by Zealots and maybe then by the soldiers.
Well said! My opinion in spiritual matters; from experience, and from mentors who have passed on verbal traditions, which help us to understand the written Word: is that such teachings are paradoxical, and multi dimensional. In the world which most people exist; we live off the back of profits, but! When our own understanding is aligned with a moment of inspiration, there can be personal revelation. An example of this occurred for me this week; where at a gathering after a funeral, I was listening to a person speak of the merits of multi billionaire philanthropists? And as I breathed in this misnomer; this story took shape in my mind. Multi billion money mad mania frequently picks the pockets of the poor, whilst promoting themselves as saviours. It is difficult for a person in association with hypnotic financial gain, to understand something, when their monetary income depends on not understanding it. Many are called, few are chosen. I enjoyed the video; keep going with Good Works.
You can find the same issue in the "tithing" chapter in Deuteronomy 14. Many pastors will use that to say that you should give a tenth to the church, but the chapter says to take this tithe and enjoy it before the Lord. Then it tells us not to forget those in need. The lesson isn't about giving money to a church, but remembering who gives us our blessings and remembering to be a blessing to others in need.
This verse reminds me of what my Grandfather told me about the Catholic Churches did during the Great Depression. The priests would come around and collect money from their members and they could barely eat. He really hated that and he had ten children and still he helped give food to his neighbors.
The destruction of the temple was not a judgement as you claim at the 2:45 time in your video, it was because we were to become the temple of the living God after his death, burial, and resurrection.
In the Talmud it says after Jesus death, the red thread on the temple door on Yom Kippur did not turn white again for the forgiveness of sins, for the remaining 40 years.
In retrospect, you remind me of me. And how I wish I had followed my first passion, Jesus, rather than performing in 'church' and blindly accepting the word of God as spoken by pastors or preachers I am not specifically condemning pastors, nor congregations Yet I must confess, that my Christian experience or church experience pales in magnitude when compared to reading the bible myself, and being changed by the experience After many moral struggles or conflicts, and no doubt, with many more ahead, I receive a deep peace from knowing even just a little of Word of God as it is written than from any sermon I can recall This is enough for me. I do not need religious orders, or denominations to define the way. I can see in the bible that Jesus is clearly the way, the truth and the life...I follow Him
I have been a member of 3 church councils when I was younger, I saw very little of the funds really reach the poor. Now I do not contribute to any church, but I give to the needy when asked or when I see the need.
It is important to have joy when giving. If you feel you’re giving out of custom or duty, then pray on it. Remember, we are not supposed to feel stressed out when giving. If we are, something is gravely wrong! Jesus clearly tells us to put our worries onto Him. Amen! “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30)
@@lionoffireraw Faith is the point. A faith that you cannot comprehend. Jesus said you cannot serve two masters either you will love the one and hate the other or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. The old widow is a prime example of loving God, and serving him, and not money. For your information, Matt. Go and read the story about Elijah and the widow of Zarephath. And what happened to the widow and her son when she gave the last of what she had to Elijah.
This goes to show how often people preach Scripture out of context. Scripture wasn't originally separated as chapter and verse. So it's always important to remember the context. If you don't keep into account the context, you might be conned by the the text.
God Bless you Matt. You are my Righteous Brother & I am strengthened by your assuredness & clarity. I have a Street Ministry in Wodonga Vic & hope to be Travelling soon around Oz. You are on my Map! 😁 Christs Streangth & Blessings My Friend. 😉

When I became a christian and attended a church I started to give money every month, but I didn't give it to the pastor of my church, I gave to organisations like Open Doors International, who takes care of persecuted Christians, I supported a nice christian camp that needed money, and I can testimony the Lord gave me back all what I have given, the most interesting was to experiment God's empathy . Amazing!
Firstly we must remember that there was no separate chapter and verse numbers in original texts . That way one could read and understand the context of the text better I feel. As is the case here . Also I see a lot of televangelist in the USA use the tactic u mention to get more donations. People actually give money to them thinking they gonna be blessed abundantly by GOD. For example Jimmy Swaggarts ministry.
Ref; chapter and verse numbers: It was after the invention of the printing press, that the chapter and verse numbers were added to the New Testament. in 1551 by Robert Stephanus. Unfortunately, as often pointed out from the pulpit, they are sometimes not at all helpful in following the thought contained in the Greek writings. They sometimes prevent you from easily seeing the flow of thought in the author’s mind, and hinder you from even asking the right questions..
2:20 It's also interesting to note Jesus had just said the Temple would be destroyed completely, yet He went and used it while it stood. This is an example of how we need to keep up the church, spread the Gospel, making believers of all nations, even though we are waiting for the second coming.
In the latter part of Luke 20 and the first part of Luke 21, there is a contrast being shown between the widow who gave two leptons that showed true humility, willing to give "all the means of living she had", and other Jews who put on a "front" of piety, especially the Jewish religious leaders and their scribes, who "put in gifts out of their surplus", with their "gifts" not being a real "sacrifice" to God, whose name is Jehovah.(see Ex 6:3, KJV) Note: A lepton was a Jewish coin, made of copper or bronze, with one lepton equal to 1/128th of a denarius, or a day's wage, 12 hours, paid to laborers then (see Jesus illustration at Matt 20:1-16, whereby each worker was paid a denarius for a day's work, even if it was for just one hour), with one lepton equal to about 5.6 minutes of work. By the time Jesus saw this "poor widow" putting two leptons in the temple treasury chests, the Jewish religious leaders had started influencing the Jews as a nation to have Jesus executed on a stake just three days later.(Matt 21:45, 46; John 19:6, 15) Just before arriving in Jerusalem, and standing on its outskirts, he pronounced judgment against the nation of fleshly Israel for their serpent-like, venomous spirit, murderous spirit or disposition who imitated their "father", the Devil.(John 8:44; Matt 23:33) He said as he wept: "If you, even you, had discerned on this day the things having to do with peace-but now they have been hidden from your eyes. Because the days will come upon you when your enemies (the Roman armies) will build around you a fortification of pointed stakes and will encircle you" "and besiege you from every side (which occurred from April 3-August 30, 70 C.E.). They will dash you and your children within you to the ground, and they will not leave a stone upon a stone in you, because you did not discern the time of your being inspected.”(Luke 19:42-44) At Luke 18, Jesus gives an illustration of a haughty Pharisee, "who trusted in their own righteousness and who considered others as nothing" and a humble tax collector, saying: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector (with both being Jews)." "The Pharisee stood and began to pray these things to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like everyone else-extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers-or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give the tenth of all things I acquire.’ " "But the tax collector, standing at a distance, was not willing even to raise his eyes heavenward but kept beating his chest, saying, ‘O God, be gracious to me, a sinner.’ I tell you, this man went down to his home and was proved more righteous than that Pharisee. Because everyone who exalts himself will be humiliated, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”(Luke 18:9-14) So, the widow at Luke 21 showed the rare quality of humility, which very few have, that contrasted with the haughty state of the nation of fleshly Israel who was judged worthy of destruction by Jehovah God.(see Isa 10:22, 23; Dan 9:26, 27; Joel 2:30-32)
Well in context ofJesus other teachings, i think it means you should give it your all to enter Gods kingdom, with in the abilitys given to by God. "it is better to give than receive" "give your shirt off you back" "render unto caesar" in context its very clear what is meant that you ought even give your last penny to the poor.
The copper coin of that time was the prutah. It wasn't a penny, it's value was set to be the price of a loaf of bread; about $2.00 today. I'm pretty sure there was no smaller coin denomination at that time.
Prosperity preachers will use every trick to get you $. Actually, the word of God is free but the rest cost money. Great interpretation of scriptures. Thanks for posting.
Many have seen that meaning, but did you see an even deeper meaning? Jesus says, "Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God." Did this widow see the corruption of the scribes, but also see God in the picture. All of our churches are corrupt in some manner, simply because we are human beings, who mix faith with great imperfections. We can sit around and criticize the church all day long, or we can also see God using a very imperfect congregation led by very imperfect people. I believe that the widow saw the corruption but also saw God. Her giving went to God whom she saw, not very faulty religious leaders. Her attitude went way beyond the tithe that some churches demand, and is an example of giving way beyond a stingy tithe. Do we give just a tithe or our whole lives to God?
As I have stated before, you do not have to support financially. Volunteering your time to help the poor and those that are vulnerable is an alternative.
I have commented before on your good content. This is another good one. I just think, when you say "NO ONE" understands the true meaning of this story, you are sounding quite proud. You do not usually come across as a proud, no it all, so this seemed out of character for you. I think it would be much better to say, "MANY" do not understand. God bless.🙂
Hi Matt. I have a question maybe you can help me understand. I am very confused about this. So there is a lady that asked me a question about the Holy Spirit. She says that everyone receives the Holy Spirit at salvation, but the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is another experience that gives you power and boldness to serve the Lord, that is what I need and I feel like I am not good enough to receive it! She then says, I have been praying years for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, but have not received the power! I feel I must not be worthy enough to receive it! ....Now I personally did not know there were two separate experiences. When I received the Holy Spirit, I felt filled , transformed, and empowered all at once. So when she asked me this, I didnt know how to answer that. How do you receive the Holy Spirit upon salvation, but then receive something else later on? It didnt make sense to me. If you can give me any clarity, I would appreciate it. Be blessed
I don’t believe that the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a separate thing to salvation. I believe that we all receive the Holy Spirit when we are saved. The Holy Spirit lives in us and is infinitely powerful. We don’t need “more” infilling. We simply need to be more surrendered and obedient to God!
Spot on! The Law of Christ, which Christians follow if they follow their Savior, is Love you neighbor as yourself. Love one another. Do FOR others what you like others to do to you. Caring for the needy and generally bringing Heaven to earth is what we are created for IN CHRIST. Those who live for themselves and especially those who take from the poor to give to the rich can look forward to destruction. Love is the key. Love does no HARM to the other.
This is why we need to renew our mind daily through the scriptures and apply those scriptures to our life. It is the Holy Ghost that guides and leads us to all truth. Therefore we must not just listen to our pastors sermons without checking the scriptures for ourselves to make sure what they are saying is in fact biblically correct. Never just rely on what man is telling you.
What is confusing is god says he loves us but if we do not love him he will send us to hell.If someone says they love you but you most love them that is not love at all. That is totally selfish and heartless
No where in the Bible does it ever say that God sends people to the lake of fire for not loving Him. People are cast into the lake of fire because their names are not found written in the book of Life. They do not have eternal life.
@@rickdavies4801 After examing the evidence I simply believe the testimony of Jesus Christ. I believe that the Bible is true, it is God's Word. Everything I wrote about the Bible is true. Believe it or not but I gave an accurate representation of the Bible.
@@rickdavies4801 I am not trying to convince you of anything. Mostly I am saying that I have been studying the Bible for a long time and just wanted to clarify what the Bible does and does not say.
American churches misunderstand the widow, it does not teach that one should give everything one has to the church, but that one should not demand more than what people have to give and be reasonable and fair instead.
You are correct. And I often feel if the very richest of church leaders, who are so elevated in their possessions and finances, would give away to the poor all that they have these rich and grossly paid church leaders would advance spiritually far about their current position of leadership. What a lesson that would be, if (insert church leader here) gave away everything he or she had with a joyful and loving heart and their follows and non believers could see the true heart of Jesus. Personally, I feel the richest of church leaders are robbing themselves and others of a beautiful spiritual reward and great awakening. These leaders hold hostage an opportunity to advance the spiritual awareness of our Jesus. Not to mention the spiritual growth waiting for them. By staying “stuck” with their money and things they have missed their mark.
According to Jesus, she went home to die. She had nothing left to live on. Regardless of her faith, her offering should not have been encouraged by the religious leaders. Read what God said through the apostles about giving.
@@annep.1905 stating "...she went home to die" is going well beyond the text. She gave the last of her money but that doesn't mean she's going to starve to death.
I also learned it taught by Pastor John MacArthur. How about the story of the Good Samaritan that the world use and abuse totally out of context? A story of a conversation between an arrogant lawyer and our Savior.
Pastors who use the widows mite story to persuade people to give more than they can afford will receive the same condemnation as the pretentious scribes and Pharisees.
Its so crazy that the bible tells me that Im SEALED with the HOLY SPIRIT and that the HOLY SPIRIT WOULD lead me into ALL TRUTH; but YOUR telling me that I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS VERSE.Your ARROGANCE aside I dont believe ur QUALIFIED to make THAT STATEMENT about MY SPIRITUAL maturity.
Correct, the offering was according to the Law. However, they were not following YHVH's instructions and instead were preying on the widows and fatherless. Exodus 30:15 “The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.” Psalms 68:5 “A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.” Jeremiah 5:28 “They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.” Isaiah 1:17 “Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.” Isaiah 1:23 “Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.” Jeremiah 49:11 “Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.” Psalms 82:3 “Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.” Deuteronomy 27:19 “Cursed be he that perverteth the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say, Amen.”
Tithes and offerings was never money in the bible. The tithes of the land and the meat(animals) for offering was so that there were food for the , Levite, the stranger, and the fatherless and the widow. Deut:14 v 28-29.And Malachi 3:10 show the Tithes to be food. The 2 "mites" of the widow in the temple were for the upkeeping of the Temple (Nehemia10:32) Tithes is and never were money acording to the Bible. Thank you for your work Brother. .
Clickbait is when someone puts something in the title that is misrepresentative of the video. This is different to a “clickable” title. Nothing in my title is dishonest. The probability is that the person watching this video would have never heard this interpretation before. To avoid a misrepresentation, I use the word “probably.” We need to be accurate with our definitions! Often times when someone uses the word “clickbait” they use it incorrectly, and simply mean to say that they don’t like the title.
@@lionoffireraw you can wrap it up in any way you want , to me the title is just click bait, this story is for 9 year olds, there are some real difficult passages in the bible, try those with real titles
The widow bypassed the religious leaders and her “two mites” were her offering in worship to the God of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob! Man looks at the money, Jesus knows the heart of the offering!
The widow didn't show great faith. She showed conditioned faith, if she showed great faith she would be like the Roman soldier. I know that Kenneth Copeland didn't get it but real faith isn't his thing, the dollar bill is .

I remembered Pastor John MacArthur gave the same explanation as you and I agree. God will not exploit the poor
Your the real deal ,Jesus is taking notice of your work ,thankyou
Amen.
😅🎉😂🎉😊🎉😂🎉😅🎉
Yahuah bless you friend!
Well, if there is a God yes, if there is not than they just living the american dream. I wonder which one is true.
@Zodroo_Tint no question. He's real
@@rachelm7525 ditto that.
Well said...taking from rather than supporting the vulnerable
Thank you Matt‼️ I don’t think I’ve ever heard a preacher put the emphasis on anything OTHER than the poor widow’s faith. She did have tremendous faith, no doubt. But surely that spin has been abused, it seems, for financial gain. Thank you for putting the emphasis where I believe, now, it belongs🙏‼️
Amen 🙏
Amen
I was playing in a worship band some years ago at a megachurch. They played a video of a young girl talking about the widow's mites and she said it was about rich people not giving enough money to the church.
I was in the sound booth with the lead sound man at the time, so I told him "that's not what the story is about.". I then told him the correct interpretation.
The next week the sound man told me that he passed on my info to church leadership at the Monday morning meeting. The pastor told everyone "it's just a fun video". 😂😂😂
@randyosgood4729- unbelievable! Good for you sharing Godly knowledge with your colleague.
Superb explanation. What other parts are misunderstood because the whole story is not read? Most.
God bless my Church,as a widow they have been there for me. Church and members individually. ❤
Great point, brother 🙏
I've understood it for 50+ years, which negates your contention that "NO ONE understands." As a Christian(?), please stop the 'click' bating.
Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:2-3). Take care
Good job of putting the story in context. Keep preaching it brother
Wow, I had just finished reading Luke 20, then prayed, then stumbled on this video immediately afterwards. Happy to have some correct thoughts on it. Thank you! 🙏 🕊️
That’s so great!!
@lionoffireraw Yes it is. Thank you! 🕊️
John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”
Luke 3:11
Not sure what the "clickbait" person was talking about here. You, Matt delivered a msg and its context. Excellent. Most Pastors, forget context as well as, audience relevance. Too lazy to study with their topical preaching. That’s why I love expository. Good job Matt, as usual.
Thank you so much. I appreciate that 🙏
Thanks for this Matt. I have not seen this chapter of this perspective before. Even as you pointed and started reading the verses that I am seeing the links between what Jesus was saying before you uncover the verse.
Love hearing the birds in the background :)
It’s a peaceful setting 😃
I really appreciate your highlighting the poor widow passage brother. It really helped me to put it together in the outset.
Imagine how personal that might have been. She may have just then gotten to the point where in desperation she tossed those coins in there, hoping that God would see… and He did.
This comment of yours hit my heart when you glorified God .. that he saw her give, and with compassion and gratitude he blessed her to time immemorial
@@jaimiemadden590 Did he? He used her as an example of theft by leaders. Did he bless her with providing for her needs? We don't know. Read what God said through the apostles about giving: giving your last farthing was never encouraged in the early church.
Great Message brother Matt!!👍👍
Glad you liked it!
Thank you for that revelation and also reading the scriptures before and after for a better understanding of what Jesus was actually teaching. I learned something new. Again, thank you brother.
You are very welcome
Thank you Matt for all you do and I continue to pray that the Lord gives you strength. God bless you.
I appreciate that very much. God bless you.
OK, with the inclusion of the former and latter statements, the importance of the story does dramatically change. Thanks.
God bless you. Matt 🙏
Could not both hold true?
This critique marries in perfectly with your other video regarding the critique on Tithe .....again , well done !
I’m glad that you like them!
Philippians 4:13 is another!
The stone temple is the example of what will happen when our Lord returns.
It was a prophecy of the destruction of the second temple in 70 AD by the Romans , which came to pass 🤔
Thank you for the new insight. May God bless you and your family. ❤
John MacArthur was first to correct me on this scripture . So relevant in today’s Church .
In retrospect, you remind me of me. And how I wish I had followed my first passion, Jesus, rather than performing in 'church' and blindly accepting the word of God as spoken by pastors or preachers
I am not specifically condemning pastors, nor congregations
Yet I must confess, that my Christian experience or church experience pales in magnitude when compared to reading the bible myself, and being changed by the experience
After many moral struggles or conflicts, and no doubt, with many more ahead, I receive a deep peace from knowing even just a little of Word of God as it is written than from any sermon I can recall
This is enough for me. I do not need religious orders, or denominations to define the way. I can see in the bible that Jesus is clearly the way, the truth and the life...I follow Him
God bless you 🙏
AMEN! God Bless Brother!
I have been a member of 3 church councils when I was younger, I saw very little of the funds really reach the poor. Now I do not contribute to any church, but I give to the needy when asked or when I see the need.
The Book of the Natsarim tells us Yahusha (Jesus) explained wealth brings responsibility of care to society.
It's a fresh perspective for me. Thank you Matt.
Thank you, brother-in-Christ Matt ✝️
I always thought it was about her faith, because she put in everything she had it’s speaks of her faith and trust in the Lord to provide her needs. ❤
It does also demonstrate that she had great faith, but that’s not the main point.
I just discovered your videos, and I like thedm very much thanks for telling the truth appreciate you borther God bless and keep you!
This goes to show how often people preach Scripture out of context. Scripture wasn't originally separated as chapter and verse. So it's always important to remember the context. If you don't keep into account the context, you might be conned by the the text.
Great video brother
Thought you might like this one 😃

When I became a christian and attended a church I started to give money every month, but I didn't give it to the pastor of my church, I gave to organisations like Open Doors International, who takes care of persecuted Christians, I supported a nice christian camp that needed money, and I can testimony the Lord gave me back all what I have given, the most interesting was to experiment God's empathy . Amazing!
Thank you, Matthew! Well said!
Referencing Luke 20:45- 21:4 I agree. Referencing Luke 21:5-36 is a parallel verse to Mt. 24:2-51
2:20
It's also interesting to note Jesus had just said the Temple would be destroyed completely, yet He went and used it while it stood.
This is an example of how we need to keep up the church, spread the Gospel, making believers of all nations, even though we are waiting for the second coming.
In the latter part of Luke 20 and the first part of Luke 21, there is a contrast being shown between the widow who gave two leptons that showed true humility, willing to give "all the means of living she had", and other Jews who put on a "front" of piety, especially the Jewish religious leaders and their scribes, who "put in gifts out of their surplus", with their "gifts" not being a real "sacrifice" to God, whose name is Jehovah.(see Ex 6:3, KJV)
Note: A lepton was a Jewish coin, made of copper or bronze, with one lepton equal to 1/128th of a denarius, or a day's wage, 12 hours, paid to laborers then (see Jesus illustration at Matt 20:1-16, whereby each worker was paid a denarius for a day's work, even if it was for just one hour), with one lepton equal to about 5.6 minutes of work.
By the time Jesus saw this "poor widow" putting two leptons in the temple treasury chests, the Jewish religious leaders had started influencing the Jews as a nation to have Jesus executed on a stake just three days later.(Matt 21:45, 46; John 19:6, 15)
Just before arriving in Jerusalem, and standing on its outskirts, he pronounced judgment against the nation of fleshly Israel for their serpent-like, venomous spirit, murderous spirit or disposition who imitated their "father", the Devil.(John 8:44; Matt 23:33)
He said as he wept: "If you, even you, had discerned on this day the things having to do with peace-but now they have been hidden from your eyes. Because the days will come upon you when your enemies (the Roman armies) will build around you a fortification of pointed stakes and will encircle you"
"and besiege you from every side (which occurred from April 3-August 30, 70 C.E.). They will dash you and your children within you to the ground, and they will not leave a stone upon a stone in you, because you did not discern the time of your being inspected.”(Luke 19:42-44)
At Luke 18, Jesus gives an illustration of a haughty Pharisee, "who trusted in their own righteousness and who considered others as nothing" and a humble tax collector, saying: "Two men went up into the temple to pray, the one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector (with both being Jews)."
"The Pharisee stood and began to pray these things to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like everyone else-extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers-or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give the tenth of all things I acquire.’ "
"But the tax collector, standing at a distance, was not willing even to raise his eyes heavenward but kept beating his chest, saying, ‘O God, be gracious to me, a sinner.’ I tell you, this man went down to his home and was proved more righteous than that Pharisee. Because everyone who exalts himself will be humiliated, but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”(Luke 18:9-14)
So, the widow at Luke 21 showed the rare quality of humility, which very few have, that contrasted with the haughty state of the nation of fleshly Israel who was judged worthy of destruction by Jehovah God.(see Isa 10:22, 23; Dan 9:26, 27; Joel 2:30-32)
Thank you 🙏
...and it also applies to our "Bodily Temple!"🤗
How about the “Apple”? Is it according to the actual text, that Adam was personally forbidden to bite, but Eve came along afterwards?
Well in context ofJesus other teachings, i think it means you should give it your all to enter Gods kingdom, with in the abilitys given to by God.
"it is better to give than receive" "give your shirt off you back" "render unto caesar" in context its very clear what is meant that you ought even give your last penny to the poor.
When you give, do it quietly and let no one see. Only you and the Father will know.
Thank you. I had not heard this meaning. I am age 83!!
It never occured to me of the leaders taking advantage!
Hmmm
The copper coin of that time was the prutah. It wasn't a penny, it's value was set to be the price of a loaf of bread; about $2.00 today. I'm pretty sure there was no smaller coin denomination at that time.
Hmm.., don’t know about others, but this is quite obvious to me as you read and study the mentioned passages it in context.
Can you please explain the true meaning of ‘resist not evil’ if you have the time? Thank you 🖖👀
It would have been really helpful if you had put the verses under discussion in the title or description.
God bless.🙂
Thanks for your suggestion.
I put NO ONE in inverted commas (“NO ONE”), which essentially means that the vast majority don’t understand this.
I think it's better to give unanimously as Jesus taught; heartfelt and with joy. The Lord sees just as good in the dark as in the light. Amen.
I've often wondered what happened to the widow.
The actual meaning of Malachi 3:8 in context is very similar to this.
God isnt looking for money!!
He's looking at your heart that what he wants!!
Not just the religious leaders but the thieving politicians also. (The shepherds who don't tend the flocks).
Never just rely on what man is telling you.
excellent
What is confusing is god says he loves us but if we do not love him he will send us to hell.If someone says they love you but you most love them that is not love at all. That is totally selfish and heartless
No where in the Bible does it ever say that God sends people to the lake of fire for not loving Him. People are cast into the lake of fire because their names are not found written in the book of Life. They do not have eternal life.
Jesus promised that whoever believes in Him has everlasting life and will never perish.
@grizz4489 All gods and all religions promise all sorts of things. That doesn't mean they're true wake up
@@rickdavies4801 After examing the evidence I simply believe the testimony of Jesus Christ.
I don't think she was conned out giving all she had to the scribes, I think she sacrificed to the God she knows, out her heart.
We don't know about that particular widow, but Jesus is clear that they were stealing widows' houses.
Exactly!!
Pastors who use the widows mite story to persuade people to give more than they can afford will receive the same condemnation as the pretentious scribes and Pharisees.
this is also my understanding
Amen brother
Its so crazy that the bible tells me that Im SEALED with the HOLY SPIRIT and that the HOLY SPIRIT WOULD lead me into ALL TRUTH; but YOUR telling me that I DONT UNDERSTAND THIS VERSE.Your ARROGANCE aside I dont believe ur QUALIFIED to make THAT STATEMENT about MY SPIRITUAL maturity.
Correct, the offering was according to the Law. However, they were not following YHVH's instructions and instead were preying on the widows and fatherless.
Exodus 30:15
“The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls.”
Psalms 68:5
“A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.”
Jeremiah 5:28
“They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.”
Isaiah 1:17
“Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.”
Isaiah 1:23
“Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.”
Jeremiah 49:11
“Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.”
Psalms 82:3
“Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy.”
Deuteronomy 27:19
“Cursed be he that perverteth the judgment of the stranger, fatherless, and widow.
The 2 "mites" of the widow in the temple were for the upkeeping of the Temple (Nehemia10:32)
Tithes is and never were money acording to the Bible. Thank you for your work Brother. .
the judgment on those OC Jews would be the destruction of their temple, city and priesthood. Their judgment came on them in 70 AD.
What. And you don’t find it as even hideously ironic, the fact that so few people have been taught this? The story goes on.
?
there is lots in the bible that go way over my head but this is easy to understand and always has been. this is just click bait
Clickbait is when someone puts something in the title that is misrepresentative of the video.
This is different to a “clickable” title.
Nothing in my title is dishonest.
The probability is that the person watching this video would have never heard this interpretation before. To avoid a misrepresentation, I use the word “probably.”
We need to be accurate with our definitions!
Galatians 5, especially vs 15.
The widow didn't show great faith. She showed conditioned faith, if she showed great faith she would be like the Roman soldier. I know that Kenneth Copeland didn't get it but real faith isn't his thing, the dollar bill is .
