      I lost about 250 mmr this week because my 3k midlaners and carries are total garbage, 10 losses in a row, 1 win then 6 other losses in a row. Then I watched a carry guide from gameleap and realised that, in order to win in dota, you ACTUALLY have to use your brain. So I went from playing support to playing mid (which was my worst position) and now I regained about half of the mmr I lose simply by being strategic about my game decisions. I honestly have no idea how to get out of the under 4k mmr shithole playing support, so I highly recommend learning how to play carry and carry your own ass until 4k mmr.

    When you talk about the two extremes in play-styles, headstrong vs too passive, I think of an old strategy from the martial art Aikido about the, ever so elusive, equilibrium.
    In Aikido, you can't do much without contact so you often want to close as quickly as possible.
    As you might imagine, this might set you up for getting countered easily when you go in for a technique.
    The way aikido resolves this is by attacking when the opponent attacks and retreating when the opponent retreats.
    Think of acting like a guard dog who owns an area, chases trespassers away but does not chase after them. beyond a certain point.
    There was an an old saying in aikido, "When someone comes to you, embrace them, when they pull away send them on their way."
    Put another way, punish their proximity with aggression and reward them with distance for the distance they give you.
    Obviously when you're going in for a fight you wan to time your attack well so that either they land first or they resolve as a counter to their initiation.
    Any hoo, I've rambled enough. Hopefully I don't sound too derpy. Gl Jenkins!

    • @bonkbonk98
      @bonkbonk98 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      doesn't work in dota 2. People move away from you because they know they're at a disadvantage, it's your job to pressure not play defensive and give them 50/50. Watch the video man

    • @bonkbonk98
      @bonkbonk98 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Likewise a viper or a huskar is gonna be up in your ass because he knows he is stronger than you most of the time. But if you answer by also fighting him back you'll feed and get reported. Cool brag about your aikido knowledge, but totally irrelevant

    • @beansnrice321
      @beansnrice321 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@bonkbonk98 What I described is only if you're on a generally equal lvl with your opponent during the laning stage.
      If your opponent has a power or range advantage on you a lot of the dynamics I describe greatly distort.
      I realize what I described kind sounds like a strategy to just walk in to get beat down but the part about backing off when they do is equally important.
      Think of it like this. So long as you can meet them at a relatively equal level, if you follow what I described earlier, you essentially get free movement.
      For example, if you close when they're trying to close, that's distance you yourself don't have to cover. If you run from them when they run from you that's, again, more distance you don't have to cover.
      Attack range is a huge factor here too and walking in to fight a ranged attacker is no different than a melee in principal but in execution it's greatly different because range allows a combatant to exercise multiple options, simultaneously within the scope of their range advantage. For example, they can attack while disengaging(ie. kiting.)
      So through a range advantage, for either a player or their opponent, the act of engaging and disengaging becomes, lets say, "fuzzier," around the edges.

      @-FermatsletzterSatz- 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just keep in mind that playing the lane in any other way than "normal" is difficult with random pub teammates. Cheesing the lane is primarily an offlane thing and it all depends on if the pos 3&4 are on the same page on how to play the lane. If you have a competent lane partner or play with a friend and both of you know how to cheese a lane, it's virtually impossible to lose an offlane in dota due to creep pulling.

      @@rikiamaru It takes practice, a LOT of practice. I remember a few months back I started playing offlane, picking heroes like Bristleback and Tidehunter and casually forgot to pull enemy creeps away from enemy tier 2 tower until I saw some guide videos like this one. I messed up a lot in the first 3-4 games, sometimes getting ganked by enemy supports because I didn't do the timing right. But now I'm used to it. Every role requires a lot of tricks to master, but eventually you'll get to the point when it becomes your instinct. Just keep playing!

  • @Sammysapphira
    @Sammysapphira 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Biggest thing that skyrocketed my skill is realizing that DotA isn't fricking League of Legends. If a lane is terrible, LEAVE. You're not trapped in your lane until 15 minutes like in LoL, actually just fucking go away, it's 8 minutes and you're getting turned into a skidmark on the ground? If you're a carry, literally just go jungle. It's a hard game, but it's better than a stomp. If you're a support, leave and go try to gank another lane. There's no benefit to sitting under tower wondering when they're going to dive you with their 2 level advantage. Go somewhere else on the map and do something. It's like the house is falling down and you're trying to hold it up, you won't, it will crash down and you will die lmao.
    I've had plenty of games on a carry where we just got banged around in lane, and once I realized it's unrecoverable I go jungle or take the off lane, and we end up having a really solid game despite the horrendous disadvantage.

      he said this because many of the player over pressure the enemy, chase, and feed the enemy because of it, or just got to scared to take the opportunity even if the enemy is running away from you, not taking advantage of the free space, farm, and hero spikes to makes the enemy chance of winning more bleak

    Great video! I like the emphasis on cheesing in the offlane as the concept is insanely broken. We see it in every pro match and yet even in moderately high matches people don't use it.
    I'd add for the other viewer, that you do need good communication with your lane partner for this to work well but if you play with a friend or a competent random teammate you literally don't lose offlanes anymore.
    Which opens up two questions I'd be very interested for you (Jenkins) to answer here or at dota alcehemy:
    1. Do you feel like the concept of creep pulling in the offlane is so broken that it need to be fixed? And if so, how would you do it? That the creeps don't aggro until they pass the outer most tower?
    2. I've been playing Dota for 3 years now and even I noticed huge changes in how the game is played. And I always wonder to what degree it evolved because of changes to the game by Valve and to what degree it's just strictly better ideas that people a few years ago didn't come up with. Like creep pulling from the offlane. Was it possible before and people just didn't think about it? Or the deadlane concept? Or the emphasis on keeping waves pushed to gain map knowledge. Todays elusive carries push waves super aggressive and hiding in the trees to cut an additional wave is common even in average pubs.
    There are countless other examples of how the game changed compared to a few years ago and I think that question is both interesting and open enough to make a nice video about. Like, maybe just write (very) specific changes down compared to old dota, think about whether they are due to changes in the game or truely innovative ideas and discuss it with Donnie. And if you're unsure about the changes in carry/mid maybe you two know someone who is willing to spend 15min talking to you about it.

    i totally agree with this,
    i played in a laning of pudge&rubick (offlane) vs void&techies (safelane), i (as a pudge) cant really kill any of them (void q and techies e get rids of my chance of pressuring them), if you try to pressure them, the techies will just suicide and kill you when the chance come (from overplay/overpressure), and void basically last hit better than pudge and rubick,
    so i just cheese it out, denying all my creep and bodying void when he comes near the creeps (didnt chase him), while rubick just pull creepwave and messing around in their jungle and deleting all of the enemy jungle camps and techies mines, both of us didnt even try to kill them, didnt even hook much till lvl 6 since i know they just ran away after we hook them in,
    when lvl 6 comes, i became able to ult them before they escape, changing from a cheese lane into a neutral/pressure lane, and we won, cuz rubick basically minesweep the jungle and lane, while i just harrased void to fail carry, since i rot and body him when he comes near to farm lane (while our other lane won it hard, giving us 2 fed carry and mid)

    • @nightmareTomek

      I'm at this point to call it the "sit&sap strategy" of Pudge pickers. Sit in the trees and sap xp from your core. And some Pudges at lvl1 even after getting a hook they run awaaaaaaay!!!!!! So incredibly friggin useless!!!
      I'm also counting my lost games due to mids picking Pudge. I'm at 17/20. Yes. 17 games lost! However one of the wins was due to us crushing the sidelanes harder than Pudge losing mid, so there's that. 18/20 games Pudges lost mid and then had no impact.
      Mb Aghs or a talent should increase Pudges hook (projectile?) speed.
