I have a 2015 VW Scirocco in white, great car, really great to drive, who cares about boot space and back seats, buy a van if that's an issue, it's a great car, looks great drives really well, and it will last because it is a VW
VW have always been too scared of cannibalising Golf sales to promote their coupe's. For example they never called the mk2 Scirocco a GTI. Instead they called it a GTX and then Scala despite having the same 1.8i engine in the mk2 Golf GTI. They let the amazing Corrado wither on the vine. Then they relaunch the mk3 Scirocco and kept it in the shade of the Golf by refusing to promote it as much and not allowing it to have Haldex.
@@tnetroP i was only really in the market for a hothatch in the first place. i think that might be part of why vw didn't put as much effort into the scirocco
Even without this video I would take the Scirocco but this just cements it. Such a good looking modern car and not that far behind in terms of specs, shame they're discontinuing this gen of the Scirocco
You can still get corrado vr6 for fairly cheap in the UK. Had one for over 20 years and it's still here putting modern gti's to shame. The sound from that engine too is incredible .
Great video! Got a 17 plate Scirocco R - awesome car. The Golf R is good, very good but is too refined and too composed on the road. The Scirocco is a much more engaging drive and with 280BHP you're right on the limit of what a FWD can handle. Giving the Scirocco 4WD would ruin it. Still can't believe VW has discontinued the Scirocco!
Very good honest review, thank you. I've had my scirocco R for 6 years now and I still love it the same as when I bought it new. Awesome to drive all the time.
Glad you enjoyed it! I can see why you love your Scirocco R. I'd recommend the 280 model highly if you do fancy a change to something similar but different.
The Golf exterior/body is getting so boring. The Scirocco has a wide stance, nice hips and the chassi overall looks so much more sporty and stylish 😍 I loooove the Scirocco body. The Golf R DSG performance and interior does take the lead though, plus the quad exhaust (even though it’s a bit exaggerated), they’re fully functional and look sportier 😁
Very good review! I've had my Scirocco for about 5.5 years now. I'm still happy and enjoying driving it! I had a great opportunity to drive it in a proper race tracker. It did behaved much better than expected!
I actually own both these cars (both modified Scirocco 360BHP, Golf R 475BHP) and can confirm the Golf R is definitely the quicker point to point car, BUT the Scirocco is the more fun car to drive and looks way better than the Golf. You feel exposed in the Golf while driving, in The Scirocco with the smaller windows you feel more enclosed and safer, if that makes sense? Love both cars though. If you want a mindless hoon the Golf R is the more capable :)
I had a white Scirocco TSI 160 bhp DSG and loved it. Actually I had two. The first had the dynamic chassis and was much nicer to drive than the second one which didn’t. It has good rear passenger space for a coupe and I got a 55” tv in the back. It wasn’t an R but was really enjoyable to drive. I now have a MK7 Golf R and it’s also really nice to drive. The thing about the Golf is it’s MUCH nicer inside...and the facelift is even nicer. It’s just got lots of little things that make it a nice place to sit, nicer than the Scirocco. It’s also a DSG and is quick. Ive not driven a Scirocco R but I’m guessing it would be great fun to drive apart from perhaps a bit of wheelspin in certain conditions. ....I’m not sure it would be that much nicer if at all to drive than the Golf R which has incredible traction with the 4 Motion. In my opinion there’s no question that the Rocco looks better from outside....but you sit inside...so it’s a balance. It’s a really difficult choice and I suppose it depends whether you want the exterior look or the interior experience with gadgets. I think maybe need to have a go in a Rocco R.
The Scirocco looks a lot more amazing, than the Golf, but the Golf has 4motion, you can only get the big Nav for the Golf and, because the Golf is quite bigger, it is much more practical! So I would prefer the Golf over the Scirocco, though the Scirocco is the better looking car ;)
Belive me! Iv driven BOTH! The Scirocco R may look better on front at first sights. But not until you sit in it & then walk over to a Golf, you realize the differance. I felt i should become one head shorter to fit comfortably in the Scirocco! Also its very tight on the sides & feels like the glass is creeping in on you. Iv been an owner of both a 2012 Golf GT R-Line MK6, and are now the proud owner of a Legendary 2017 Golf GTI Clubsport MK7 (40 Year Anniversary GTI). - Check my channel for videos! 👍
Scirocco still looks so fresh. We had a black 2010 plate from new (265 bhp) and loved it. Also had Scirocco R line 184 in ultra violet that I regret selling. Your reviews are great Andrew hope you're well
This guy gets it. Scirroco R is such a fun car to drive. Keeps you on the edge and also has enough torque to keep up with the rest in a superior class. I've had a custom tune since and it just keeps it that little bit more exciting. bought my 2012 model in 2014 with 9k kms. now at over 140kms. Hasn't missed a beat and still get randoms coming up to me telling me how sexy my beast is. A car to enjoy....
I own a mark 7 Golf R & a Scirocco R- I love both but they are different driving experiences. I agree with your verdict- I believe the golf to be more capable, the Scirocco more involving.
WOW! Can't be many people who own both and can drive them back to back. Pleased you agree with my verdict as you probably know these cars better than I do. Thanks for commenting.
Own a 2012 VW Scirocco GT TDI 170 myself and still in love with it after owning it for 2 years, never owned a golf though. Not sure about the R but my TDI (170 only i think) has a soundaktor to make it sound more sporty and i guess more like a petrol car. I believe the chassis is a passat one, but this i could be wrong. Another thing is in the glove box is a tire pressure sensor reset button. Anyway, awesome video, liked + subbed :)
Went from a 122ps 1.4 Scirocco to a Scirocco R (viper, manual) and it's just been an amazing car. People look at it unlike the golf R, its practical, makes a great noise with no drone, comfortable. The economy is poor my absolute BEST momentary MPG has been 33mpg. Average in town anywhere from 20-25mpg. Going to test drive an M2 in a couple of hours and am interested to see what it offers over my car, I know they're in a completely different league however I am tempted to keep my car put on an ATB LSD, uprated clutch and stage one map it, maybe short shifter and leave the car stock.
So the M2 has heavier steering but on centre response is pretty much on par with the Scirocco. It feels a heck of a lotore planted and heavy, alas it is a heavier car by at least 150kg. Noise no comparison starting that inline six from cold gives you shivers almost. Power feels more than the 100hp on paper difference between the two, the Scirocco is fast, the M2 'properly fast'. At the end I wanted to stay in the M2 , to drive it more and came close to ordering one on PCP. Then I had another good drive down a B road in the R and couldn't have used any more power or handling in the M2. I can afford to modify my car, to affordably replace pretty much any issue short of engine explosion. Again aside from an M2 nothing out there tempts me away from my car and I don't get the endless four star reviews it received. My main gripe is the steering rack is geared far too low.
@@peterwood2633 what are your driving now? Did the VR Yaris ever take your fancy. Always wanted a Scirocco and since the GRY reveal it's profile always reminded me of a stubbier smaller segment Scirocco. Story is different elsewhere. I love both designs although the Sciroccos is more mature and understated as you move to different angles.
@@confounded_feline got into a 2016 M2 i love it but I still think of the Scirocco R amazing car for the money on the used market. I'd love a GR Yaris too hehe!
@@peterwood2633 Interesting timeline of events haha, so after the B Road ride where you concluded you couldn't use that extra power from the M2, what made you get it in the end?
Had my Scirocco Tdi 170 for 4 years- here’s the rub….. it’s beautiful and defo a future classic. Had it stage 1 mapped, dynos @ 205 at the wheels - K&N panel filter, 20 mm spacers - 40 mm Lwr H&R springs (keeps the adaptive) Handling mod have just added to the stance tbh, but was always solid and tracks so well being fwd, 0-60 in 6.5 and Roll on’s between 70-120 are joyous and addictive, best thing is It’ll return 61 mpg with cruise set at 85, and 40 if I’m ragging the life out of it, PS4s are a must to experience liberty taken wet weather fun!!! All in all definitely a keeper, might treat it to a bigger front mount and delete the Dpf and egr and stage 2 it for another 25+ ponies 🤔 then again I’m being drawn to (the) Darkside Developments ability to go get close to 300 hp! Keep it VaG folks (soz Audi😂)
volkswizard thanks Volks' I'm very lucky I got to choose it through the company I worked for and was unsure what model To go but your video and face when driving it sealed it for me !keep up the great work your doing a great job for us all!
Scirocco R, a proper one with the panoramic roof and Wingback bucket seats though. The wingbacks and pan roof also werent options on the original Mk7 R I just got one a few months ago with every single option on it and it turns so much more heads than a common golf R does. Great video though!
Awesome video, you know your stuff! I'm about to pick up my Scirocco tomorrow, after driving little petrols for most my 20's to live below my means, I feel like a kid at christmas.. I haven't been this excited for any purchase, ever!!
Personally the Rocco R is fast enough. I don't need 4 wheel drive and more BHP to drive about getting smashed by speed bumps and snapped by speed cameras. Golf R's perform better but Scirocco looks faster and more exciting. I step out my house and see my Rocco R and smile EVERY time...the girls like it too lol
Great video! I had the mixed feeling years between these 2 Volksy beast but I went for the Sheer thrill driving excitement of Scirocco R, my opinion better than the TT/RCZ (these are good carts but is a bit of squeezy) ps - 4WD(4x4) and AWD are different thing.
Good thorough review. I had scirocco r 265 and friend mk7 r, both dsg. There was nothing it performance wise. Yes, he was quicker around tight turns and off the line. Scirocco r was then remapped to Apr stage 1 where it sounds and goes even better. Both great cars. Hope VW make a new scirocco soon!
Hi Jay. Thanks for commenting. Due to the popularity of SUVs, sadly a new Scirocco isn't likely but there might be some hybrid type sports car in the pipeline if we are lucky.
Hi Keyser, Thanks for commenting. I can go into a lot of detail here explaining why FWD is 'sportier' than AWD but just look at sport (motorsport). There are a lot more FWD cars than AWD cars in motorsport because lightness is everything and the chassis can be tuned to provide a lively rear end. Just look at the Golf GTI Clubsport S, the 'sportiest' Golf of all time which is FWD. Andrew
volkswizard I would genuinely be interested in that....my dream car, from a practical stance (financial & usability) is the Golf R or Focus RS. Manual is a must for me....such a shame that it's a dying option for newer cars. I'm leaning more & more towards the RS...the AWD system that Ford created just seems to surpass the Haldex system fitted to the Golf, in every way.
I have a 2012 R 6 speed manual with stage 1 upgrade. That's more than enough for a daily drive. The manual is fun and is a real drivers car. I plan on keeping this long term. It seems like it will be a collectors item down the track.
You're knowledge of the details and differences is insane! All off the cuff as well not voice over post editing. Brilliant video. Thoughts on electronic handbrakes out on newer cars these days? I always prefer the manual handbrake.
Thanks Ryan! I live with these cars through work so it's no different to the knowledge most people have in their jobs. I can't believe that video is still getting views after 2 years, it's proving very hard for me to beat which is annoying as my style has improved over the years a lot. I always hope it will be the next video that eclipses it but it never does!
For me the scirocco is a better place to be and it’s got more presence on the road. The car feels like my old edition 30 brought up to date the golf r has the better traction in general and as such covers ground faster. On track the scirocco is more than a match for the golf and more expensive cars but it’s the nicer place to be and more fun than the golf probably because it’s a bit of a change from the familiarity of the golf. I would like to try the scirocco with a quaife lsd cos it transformed my ed30 and I think it would do the same for the R
Scirocco R 4 sure... got mine 2 months ago and like you said.. makes you happy / alive and thrill... tried the TT and the golf... cannot say anything against them... really good.. but.. no excitement...
Only had mine for 2 months. Lovely looking car but flops around on anything other than bone dry roads. Just chopped mine in for a MK5 R32 and haven't looked back. Each to their own i guess :)
its not about performance.. if I wanted performance in similar category I would go for tts or something like that.. similar power... better handling.. awd ... etc... its about loving something or not... for me its not just a piece of metal... its piece of metal with soul :)
Couldn't agree more. I buy cars for the way they make me feel. Scirocco to me felt artificial and the engine had no character. Why I much prefer my R32. 3.2 Litres of throaty soul!
Belive me! Iv driven BOTH! The Scirocco R may look better on front at first sights. But not until you sit in it & then walk over to a Golf, you realize the differance. The Scirocco is a MKV chassis still... so it's now 12yrs old. No wonder VW can give away so many options in the car cabin as it's all old stock to clear out inventory. The Golf R is 2 chassis revisions newer and MQB based which is lighter and stiffer.
Brilliant review and video I did really enjoy watching it. Both amazing cars and I agree I would go for the scirocco. I drive 66 plate seat Leon fr 186 2lr tdi dsg and I love it to bits .
Had the choice of them both, Scirocco won much heart. So much better looking, lower, sportier, wider, better interior and doesn't blend in with all the the other Golfs on the road. Really nippy, great sounding engine. Best of all the resale value will hold much better given its discontinued.
An excellent review. Nicely balanced and described in such an honest and fair way. I already have the Scurocco R identical to this one, although mine is one of the last batch made in 2017. I’m not sure the internal sound is actually fake like found in the golf but if I’m wrong I’d be surprised .
Hi Marshalls Music. Thanks for commenting. Be good to know re internal sound, it's way louder than in the pre-facelift cars which are basically the same mechanically as yours/the car in video hence why I can only conclude it's fake. I think it's less fake than Golf R as it's noise channeled into the cabin rather than using an electronic device. Hence why you can't switch it off. Great cars, enjoy!
volkswizard thanks for the reply and letting me in on the internal sound setup. I wasn’t aware of this. So it’s purely natural sound so to speak than electronically produced ? Cheers
Later additions of the Scirocco had loads of kit added options to it ,so as to attract more buyers, as sales figure for them had taken a dive over recent years until finally end of production Jan 2018. So run down stock give away. Sorry for me ,round my Wiltshire A,B&C roads it's Golf R mk7 and now my mk 7.5 all day long. Oh and mine has 5drs makes even better and for me it thrills.
I have a 65 plate Scirocco R. It's epic. Only draw back is the lack of AWD. But it's such a beautiful car, it turns heads and in my experience the other shortcomings reviewers have with it are fairly overstated. And I say that having driven both.
Hi TuffGnarl, thanks for commenting. There is something about the Scirocco and R in particular. Sadly it already feels like days gone by when it comes to VW quality and durability, even if it has a crappy bonnet stay :)
@ 7:20 WHAT? Golf R dosen't get DCC? Even my GTI Clubsport was equipped with DCC from factory! Which im using every time i drive! Top Option! Awesome Review! 👍
No, it's an option here in the UK, even with our crumbling roads! And by all accounts VW salesmen are telling people not to bother and many demo cars are not equipped with it because they don't think they will get the £895 back on resale yet they will fit 19" wheels that will ruin the ride - such is life in the UK :)
@@volkswizard Allright im from Sweden so.. Its sad the amount of unfairness when it comes to the country you belong to. But i wonder if it isn't even worse for Americans though, option wise? Heard many americans complain here on TH-cam. Well at least you got the Clubsport, heck even Clubsport S man! We got only 4 of the S models to Sweden - And they were sold on auktion for good cause... 👍
Ive had my Edition 30 for 4 years now. its stage 1 so 300bhp. I test drove the mk7R and as you say its quick but where is the smiles? I had more fun in an Audi S1,much more cheeky and playful. The CS/S looks more edition 30 in terms of excitement. Trouble is for the financial outlay i dont know if its worth changing? Damn the Edition 30 is good!!
I am not sure the Edition 40 is worth the outlay. An Edition 35 though is only slightly more than an Edition 30 at 40k miles. It's very similar but that's no bad thing and a lot newer so there are still some perfect cars out there.
I sold an Editon 35 to get the 30 and free up funds for my mk2. Id really like the newer platform as the mk6 didnt really move things on significantly. Id love a CSS but even though the wife has the family car id like the option of taking my wife/daughter out. The mk2 3.2 has been sold now and i need an exciting daily car. i test drove a 2016 RS3 and loved it and its an all rounder albeit a bit less dynamically sharp than than the CS/S. If im honest i am in a right ol pickle deciding which way to go. Love the Ed 30 but its 10 years old now!
I found the RS3 a bit too fast and a bit boring at sane speeds, it is too capable for the UK. If you have that sort of budget, buy a CS Edition 40 and make it how you want it. Noisier for a start, not necessarily faster and get the spec you want as they vary massively. Highly recommend the bucket seats. Leon Cupra looking mega value at the moment.
I know what you mean about the RS3. You look at the speedo at 100mph and wonder how you got there! The 2.5 is intoxicating though. I need to test drive the CS in DSG. I would want to go stage 1 and manual clutch not renowned for its durability. Ive always driven manual. I saw the comparison video of CS and CSS. You seemed impressed with the DSG in the CS?
I test drove the Cupra R which i believe is pretty much the same set up as the Rocco chassis wise the Cupra is probably better fettled, for me the Golf was just better far more stable and would give you more on the drive, that's not to say the Cupra was a bad car it wasn't. For me the only thing that lets the Golf down is the exhaust note, its pretty feeble and should be much better not the piped in rubbish but a BCS exhaust will be sorting that for me as it adds to the whole experience, another good vid Andrew
Thanks David. I was reading in VW Driver mag about the £3k Akrapovic exhaust for Golf R - 10% of the value just to make it sound how it should have done from the start - not heard the Akrapovic yet though but when I do I will make a video for sure!
volkswizard for 3k tho you can get the BCS including downpipe and thermal wrap and probably fitted with the right forum connections by Nige. But your right it should have sounded much better from the factory and a big error by VW
I would personally pick the golf over the scirocco too, sure the scirocco looks nicely, probably handles nicely too. but being able to put the power down, if you were to tune both cars past 400bhp would be significantly easier in the golf

I have recently bought mu first car,i was in doubt between the golf gti mk5 and scirocco 2.0 tsi, finally i took the scirocco, greetings from Spain, great video
Funny old world is it not I had a new Scirocco GT Tdi 170 in 2012, a Golf GTD 3 door in 2015 and 2017 a new Gti Clubsport all with DSG. My favourite out of all although not the quickest was the Scirocco, the Golfs are brilliant cars but a Golf you sit in it, a Scirocco, you actually wear it, you can play with it. I think a lot of modern cars have to much power for there own good to be honest and in all honesty to quick for a drivers enjoyment and I have a few years track experience and rallying .
I have both cars.: 2017 uk spec scirocco and 2014 golf R. Although the ‘roc is a good car, the lack of grip, the exhaust drone and the poor comfort levels are the main issues. The golf can be driven at 70.% of it’s limit and still destroy the ‘roc. If the reviewer really wants a car that thrills at sensible limits, buy an old mini cooper or MX5. I prefer my thrills at the limit of the car, which is at a much higher performance point in the golf. The ‘roc is good, but not even close to the golf.
When I was looking at my first car I was deciding between a 3-door Golf GTI or a Beetle Turbo. I ended up buying the Beetle, but if they sold the Scirocco in the States it might have been a different story...
Hi Chandler, thanks for commenting. It's odd that VW didn't export the Scirocco the States as I bet it would have sold quite well, maybe they felt it was too much competition for the sporty versions of the Golf or maybe even the TT? Beetle Turbo is a great car though, one of the few with an independent rear suspension I believe?
volkswizard From what I heard, it was said that the Scirocco would cannibalize GTI sales. Then again, VW's North American division has been notorious for making poor business decisions, like not exporting the T-Roc to the states for example. Also yes, my Bug does have an independent rear suspension, and I've been having a blast with it since I got it about 3 years ago. What an excellent little car!
I would take any of them because I'm driving a 75 hp Seat Ibiza 6L right now... I kinda like the scirocco better but you gotta be a little mad to buy one now as it uses a really old plattform and engine... It's a lot more dated than the Golf R and still I understand what you tried to explain about the thrill... With those gauges and the lower roofline it clearly says "I'm a fast and aggressive car, go and push the pedal some more" While the Golf is harder to separate from its family car equivalents... Technically the Golf is a better car no question but If money wasn't an issue at all I think I'd take the Scirocco... If I was opting for a sports car rather than a hot hatch I'd go for the TT RS... But In reality in most cases money plays a role and the Golf seems like better value because its much more modern and I think It holds up its value better and still is easier to sell in 10 years... I would have to make test drives on my own to come to a final decision... :D
Got a 2011 scirocco R. It puts out 330 hp and 550 nm 👌 I wish it had 4wd because the launch control is useless with fwd for me now. Every drive is still good and I can easily kick some ass on the highway 😎
Nice vid, enjoyed it. Can see your fond of the rocc. In my opinion it would be better compared with the Gti, mainly due to the fwd, of course. I've always admired the look of the rocc, but would never buy one, as it's really not practical. 3 door bodyshell with a small boot, mk 5/6 tech and running gear, it's old hat I'm afraid, and now has limited appeal. The 7 Gti, is the popular choice, r for enthusiasts.
7 GTI is 50/60 PS behind the Scirocco R 280 as tested, I'd say this has a greater effect on performance than whether it has AWD or not. Scirocco boot is 312 litres, AWD Golf 7 boot is 343 litres so bigger but not massively so. All great cars!
volkswizard Agreed all very good cars. Just bought a 2015 r, part exed my 2011 mk 6 gti. Not easy decision for me as i loved the ģti. Lured by the 4 motion and dsg gearbox, and the sound the r makes. Cant wait till the spring. Your clubsport is fantasic, by the way.
Scirocco R was a lovely car but it is a question of taste there was no way it could compete with the Golf R it’s their fastest flagship car with far far more notoriety than any other VW it is STILL their biggest selling model it doesn’t need a smattering of R badges the engine does that job to prove its worth !!!!. One thing I can say about the MK7 R despite the 4WD and it’s power capacity it doesn’t have the thrill of the less powered R32 which was quicker in acceleration altogether despite not being as quick on the road and that V6 growl is impossible to compete with !!!!. No matter what VW bring to the table the Golf is it’s primary money making machine it has for over 40 years The Scirocco is sadly no more but was a definite competitor to its rival but overall ......it’s the Golf that wins it every time
Golf R, with that power 4x4 is more useful, safer, and also Golf is more spacious. But the credit for Scirocco for the exterior design. Interior looks terrible, I love Golf's interior way more.
I be happy with any of these car. I think personally the Scirocco looks just a little bit better. The Golf R has the edge over the Scirocco cos of the 4WD system.
Should of tried the 310ps 7.5. Dsg. The manuals pointless. Had two R’s now. One full spec. One half. The golfs a way better car than the scirocco. Mapped to 400 it’s a great car and the chassis takes all of it.
you have to notice that the scirocco is technical a golf 6.5, its the engine of the golf 6 with a bit more horsepower and some new things inside from the golf 7 like the steering wheel. had an scirocco r on order but there i had to order the park distance controll and the arm rest as an extra for 500$ each, so i decided to go also for an golf 7.5 which had a lot of these extras as astandart.
Should of just picked the golf with a dsg for more fair comparison, seems the test drive he enjoyed the thrill more from the dsg rather than the alleged 'more engaging' manual Interior on sirocco looks disappointing aswell, all the surrounding buttons and gear selection on the gearbox look dated along with the mk6 air vents Bit golf biased as I'm in the market for 2015/16 dsg 5 door but I'm struggling to find anything else that fits the all rounder the golf offers within my budget
If you need to carry 4 six foot plus adults, then the Golf works better. If room isn’t a premium then the Scirocco maybe wins. From VW s point of view any variation is very very expensive.
Hey Ari, thanks for commenting all the way from Canada. Shame about the Scirocco R not making it over there but the Golf R isn't a bad substitute then!

The Mk7.5 R doesn't seem to be a lot more appealing with standard nav, heated seats, better standard trim and 10 hp more. Digital dash and better lights front and rear are nice too though not sure about the new 19" wheels myself.

Hi karl, I think history will prove you right regarding Mk5. Andrew Frankel (top journo) said Mk5 was best GTI as things haven't really improved much since. Bear in mind an Edition 30 was 230 PS in 2006, a base 7.5 GTI was 230 PS before it was deleted from the range - neither have the VAQ diff of the Performance models, both have independent rear suspension so handle well. Only significant improvement is that the new TSI engines are a lot better on fuel (but then again, they won't be as reliable as that old cambelt driven 2.0 TFSI)
@@volkswizard I've got a Scirocco and previously had the mk5 gti. Was looking to swap my roc for a mk7 gti but the test drive left me cold. The edge has been taken off with that car, even the cool turbo sound of the mk5 is gone! It's just a fast composed car whilst the mk5 was an event every time I drove it! Used to go out for no reason just to drive it, and for me the honeycomb grill and 18 monza alloys still look better on this generation. I had to test drive another mk7 as I though I might have got a dud but it was exactly the same. VW needs to up its game for mk8!
@@volkswizard test drove a performance edition. Found it firmer than my mk5 but not as fun. No fun in chucking it around. Boring sounding engine note too.
@@DannyD1912 Exactly - different headlights, bumpers, interior tweaks. The Cadiz wheels are the clue and 19" was standard. Also the LEDs went from bumper to within the headlights. I think power went from 265 PS to 280 PS but the engine remained the cambelt driven EA113 TFSI not the chain driven EA888 TSI from Cupra
I think we must be on a similar wavelength..as mentioned still got my 07 Ed30..(from new) as to me it feels special to be in and it still goes well. When trying mk7R I just found it really dull myself. So from this pair I think the Rocco would be my preference. Nice video BTW. Good work.
Thanks Mark, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for commenting. If you do the miles than the R is best but then again so are plenty of other cars you could choose.
I would take the Golf R. I own a mk6 GTi and can't put all the power down because it is front wheel drive, in the wet it is even worse. Putting 300hp through only the front wheel is ridiculously stupid. What makes hot hatches fun is the handling and the power but if you can't use all the power then it isn't so hot anymore.
I experienced the VW Scirocco R, light on its feet, hell of an engine, and cannot beat that amazing look! great review
Scirroco wins in looks for me
I never liked the new scirocco. It is a slammed golf for me. Corrado was special for me. It had it 's own looks.

I have a 2015 VW Scirocco in white, great car, really great to drive, who cares about boot space and back seats, buy a van if that's an issue, it's a great car, looks great drives really well, and it will last because it is a VW
they said it has some problems with the DSG mate ? is it true ? because i'm really into this car as of now.
amen 😂
The golf is faster but scirocco looks loads better
I promise you I'd run rings around the Golf R in higher gears. Off the line yes, Golf would get ya.
Faster four door over a slower two door. Golf R wins on multiple fronts.
Volkswagen never cared about scirocco :(
yes and if they care and developed Scirocco will become a Sport Hatchback car
Scirocco. Too many golf's =boring. Plus scirocco more stylish. Wish i could have one. I've always loved scirocco. As a kid always wanted a corrado.
Nevermind same here loved corrado and got my scirocco 4months ago 😁
Get one bud their not dear at all , I’ve got a R , and it’s fantastic !!!
I'd love one and nearly did. And still maybe will. Lovely looking car.

I have a 67 plate Scirocco R and I totally agree.
it wasn't selling good enough
If only they made it faster and in four door.

Scirocco for me please, in blue with the recaro buckets!

Got me a Scirocco in white, brilliant car, love the Golf had a Mark V GT , but i love the Scirocco more
Own a 2012 VW Scirocco GT TDI 170 myself and still in love with it after owning it for 2 years, never owned a golf though.
Have since gone stage one (R-tech) car just wants to GO now it's so fast need the ps4s though that I have on to put power down!

Had my Scirocco Tdi 170 for 4 years- here’s the rub….. it’s beautiful and defo a future classic.
Had it stage 1 mapped, dynos @ 205 at the wheels - K&N panel filter,
20 mm spacers - 40 mm Lwr H&R springs (keeps the adaptive)
Handling mod have just added to the stance tbh, but was always solid and tracks so well being fwd,
0-60 in 6.5 and
Roll on’s between 70-120 are joyous and addictive, best thing is
It’ll return 61 mpg with cruise set at 85, and 40 if I’m ragging the life out of it, PS4s are a must to experience liberty taken wet weather fun!!!
All in all definitely a keeper, might treat it to a bigger front mount and delete the Dpf and egr and stage 2 it for another 25+ ponies 🤔 then again I’m being drawn to (the) Darkside Developments ability to go get close to 300 hp!

Scirocco R, a proper one with the panoramic roof and Wingback bucket seats though. The wingbacks and pan roof also werent options on the original Mk7 R
I just got one a few months ago with every single option on it and it turns so much more heads than a common golf R does.

Scirocco R looks great but id have to pick the golf R. Love a true hot hatch.
Due to the popularity of SUVs, sadly a new Scirocco isn't likely but there might be some hybrid type sports car in the pipeline if we are lucky.
finally a good comparison between the 2 cars that actually acknowledges the magic of the scirocco.
Bizarre that the Scirocco has FWD.
Yet it is meant to be more 'sporty' than a Golf.
Hi Keyser,
Thanks for commenting.

I would genuinely be interested in that....my dream car, from a practical stance (financial & usability) is the Golf R or Focus RS.
Manual is a must for me....such a shame that it's a dying option for newer cars.
I'm leaning more & more towards the RS...the AWD system that Ford created just seems to surpass the Haldex system fitted to the Golf, in every way.

Drove both, bought Scirocco. Easily the more fun car to throw about. Golf was mundane by comparison.

I always prefer the manual handbrake.
Thanks Ryan! I live with these cars through work so it's no different to the knowledge most people have in their jobs. I always hope it will be the next video that eclipses it but it never does!
The electronic handbrake is better. Uses less space. And it's more intuitive. One just has to move on with the times.

Nice video. I just bought a Scirocco GTS, basically the GTI version with 220hp & a sportier interior - this review helped me make the decision!
Cheers

VW should have made it 4WD like the golf!
Later additions of the Scirocco had loads of kit added options to it ,so as to attract more buyers, as sales figure for them had taken a dive over recent years until finally end of production Jan 2018. So run down stock give away.

Few TH-cam vids on the Akrapovic exhaust on the Golf
Ofcorse Golf R.because 4 wd.All day all weather using.500/600 hp using no problem.
its not just about the power, its also about the looking. And the scirocco def looks more sporty...
I would personally pick the golf over the scirocco too, sure the scirocco looks nicely, probably handles nicely too.
but being able to put the power down, if you were to tune both cars past 400bhp would be significantly easier in the golf

Scirocco r looks better than the golf r IMO but the golf r has more toys :(
When I was looking at my first car I was deciding between a 3-door Golf GTI or a Beetle Turbo.

I like that get out of the way Scirocco look....
Almost bought a GTI a few months back, went another direction. But out of the 2 of these I would go with scirocco. Wish we could get them in the U.S.
on paper pound for pound? golf R. however, sciroccos just win on rad factor unfortunately.
I be happy with any of these car. I think personally the Scirocco looks just a little bit better. The Golf R has the edge over the Scirocco cos of the 4WD system.
I own a scirocco R and I will never even consider a golf. Great power look sexy and sporty I’m 100 happy with it
Should of tried the 310ps 7.5.
Should of just picked the golf with a dsg for more fair comparison, seems the test drive he enjoyed the thrill more from the dsg rather than the alleged 'more engaging' manual
Interior on sirocco looks disappointing aswell, all the surrounding buttons and gear selection on the gearbox look dated along with the mk6 air vents
Bit golf biased as I'm in the market for 2015/16 dsg 5 door but I'm struggling to find anything else that fits the all rounder the golf offers within my budget
Gaz Nelson have a look for the Hyundai i30N
Sick review, I think a mk5 R32 could smash both of them on "thril" though 😎
Sirocco!!! The golf R is ez to drive (4 motion) but to drive the sirocco you have to b a good pilot.
Hey Fabrice, that's is exactly it! Thanks for commenting.
If you need to carry 4 six foot plus adults, then the Golf works better. If room isn’t a premium then the Scirocco maybe wins. From VW s point of view any variation is very very expensive.
Its a shame they didnt update it, the scirocco. I had the R and it was a great looking car. If they had a newer one now, i would buy it again
Design and sex appeal= Rocco
Practicality and a family hatchback = Golf R
thanks , unfortunately wecant get the Scirocco R in Canada, but it was great to see.
Hey Ari, thanks for commenting all the way from Canada. Shame about the Scirocco R not making it over there but the Golf R isn't a bad substitute then!
I'd have the Scirocco. Always liked something less 'mainstream'. Must be able to get some gas struts for the bonnet?
You can indeed, they're like £20 on ebay, Literally used the bolts for the wings and bonet. No cutting or welded needed
I love the golf but if vw added the golfs engine and drive train to the scirocco then i have that.
Does anyone know if the Scirocco R with a APR tune stage 1 is it multiple programming? Or single programming? Cheers
I agree, Scirocco is a more exciting tool, looks great too. Now, a Scirocco VR6.....
I’ve seen a mint green scirocco R with the bucket seats for sale in Swansea at £21k
I think I’d take it over the Golf R to be honest
Viper green? Buy it!
It might be in your back catalogue, but a very enjoyable and well presented video!
Blimey, thanks 🙌🏻
Golf all day, I've had the scirocco but the golf's far better although mines the facelift.
The Mk7.5 R doesn't seem to be a lot more appealing with standard nav, heated seats, better standard trim and 10 hp more. Digital dash and better lights front and rear are nice too though not sure about the new 19" wheels myself.

Love the cars, love the music, love the reviews!
I am dreaming of an "R"....😍😍
Scirocco being based on the mk5 golf gti it's no surprise. The Golf's since have been too refined and lost the fun factor. Mk5 was the peak.
Was that a Performance or base GTI? TBH they are pretty similar. Edition 40 might be a better call?
@@volkswizard test drove a performance edition. Found it firmer than my mk5 but not as fun. No fun in chucking it around. Boring sounding engine note too.
The mk6 and the mk5 golfs are the same car. There's almost no difference aside from the different lights and the better interior.
Get my facelift scirocco r next week cant wait!
Enjoy it sir!👍
It's had a facelift?
EinkOLED the one in the video is the facelift, think it was in production 2014-2018
@@DannyD1912 Exactly - different headlights, bumpers, interior tweaks. The Cadiz wheels are the clue and 19" was standard. Also the LEDs went from bumper to within the headlights. I think power went from 265 PS to 280 PS but the engine remained the cambelt driven EA113 TFSI not the chain driven EA888 TSI from Cupra
ive got a scirocco R and absolutly love it 🚘
I've owned both a mk7 R and mk7 GTI and I'd choose the R anyday
The awd is making all the difference aswel as the engine and throttle mapping. Mk7 golf R is the Goat
I have a scirocco which I think looks better , but the golf would be the better car I think
