It is one of the major national reserves in India. In 1974, when Project Tiger was launched in India, the Northern part of Jim Corbett was named Kalagarh Tiger Reserve (KTR). The reserve is administered from its headquarters in Nainital District. However, the forest Government of Uttarakhand has registered it under the Lansdowne division. Kalagarh (KTR) is spread over an area of 301.18 sq km, including Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary and Jim Corbett Park. Approximately 70 percent of Corbett falls in the Pauri Garhwal district, and the rest comes under Nainital and Almora districts.
Kalagarh is an abode for many wildlife species in the Shivalik Mountain Range of Pauri, Garhwal. As the name confirms, it has a high density of tigers, leopards, and others from the cats’ family. It carries a lustrous breed of deer -chital, barking deer, goral, sambar, and hog deer. The herd of elephants can be spotted anywhere in the area while on an excursion. Among others are porcupines, yellow-throated martens, and langurs. The park has more than 580 species of birds, which include kingfishers, wagtails, forktails, pheasants, hornbills, eagles, vultures; and about 50 species of mammals along with 25 species of reptiles like crocodiles, king cobras, rock pythons and monitor lizards; as well as hundreds of species of plants and insects. The place is home to several species of trees such as sal, Sheesham, semal, bakli, haladu, tun, sain, fig, bamboo, etc along with medicinal plants.
t is 3 hours safari by Jeep, in which you can experience the Jungle of Sonanadi. The region is mainly famous for the Tigers, Elephant, Leopard and many more wild animals. The main transport options around the reserve are jeeps safaris. Private vehicles are not allowed inside the Reserve forest, and this is one point to note while taking up a trip to Tiger Reserve. At Sonanadi, you can view Spotted Deer, Sambhar, Wild Boar, tiger, leopard, Barking deer, Goral, Two kinds of Bears, Himalayan Black and Sloth, and over 400 bird species, making Kalagarh Tiger Reserve a perfect wildlife safari and bird-watching destination. We arrange a safari from Vatanvasa Gate for Sonanadi Corbett Tiger Reserve near Kotdwar and Lansdowne city.
The nearest stations are Kotdwar and Lansdowne.
Road and Train: Kotdwar is well connected by road and trains.
Sonanadi Entry Gate (Vatanvasa Gate) is located 50 km from Kotdwara and 56 km from Lansedowne, it takes a 1:40 hours drive from both destinations. All is a hill drive with wonderful scenery views. Your jungle feel starts as you move further from Dugadda Town.

I stayed in Ramisera wilds in August last year and we found a cow was killed inside the property secretly hidden in the bushes near the entrance just below the area where your vehicle is standing. They used to keep the entrance open at night that time and there is no fencing. Saw the pugmarks too. Old memories revisited 😂
Jackal groups were roaming freely near the rooms inside the property mostly during night and early morning. Never seen such wild ambience in any resort before. Night views are awesome and you can hear many alarm calls. Private access to the Palain river is an added advantage and you can take a dip in the pristine waters. However, as they told Tigers and leopards are usually sighted near the river usually in the summers.
Do visit once if you get a chance
