SpaceX Falcon 9 Twilight Launch - 22 December 2017

  • Video and time lapse of the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from the top of Mount Elden. It was even better than I thought it would be.
    Full set of photos and description can be found here:
    perezmedia.net/beltofvenus/201...
    My first twilight launch was a Minotaur launch on 22 September 2005. I got hooked on that one. The Vandenberg/White Sands launches I've viewed since then have not been with perfect sun position like this. So, 12 years later...wow!
    I had two cameras running time lapse and another shooting video. The exhaust plume was a lot brighter than I expected and have a lot of clipped highlights from the f/2 lens. But still had a lot to work with. If there's another one anytime soon, at least I know the exact landmark that points to Vandenberg from Flagstaff, so I can frame more exactly.
    The first stage booster shows up as a bright streak behind the second stage. In the time lapse sequences, it winds up as an orange streak dropping below the main exhaust plume.
    Thanks to Brian Webb and the Launch Alert newsletter for the heads-up on this! ( www.spacearchive.info/newslett... )

    Re: Flat Earth comments. To the very small minority of people who I'd guess actually believe this: If you’re going to believe in a vast conspiracy, please consider the much more plausible conspiracy-that bored internet trolls and/or aggressive foreign state campaigns are responsible for the groundswell of Flat Earth support. As conspiracies go, THAT's the stuff that actually exists. Not a somehow rock-solid conspiracy vs. simple geometry, testable physics, and decades of observable space flight. I will not argue it beyond this statement, because the strong odds I’m debating vs. a bot/troll/social-media-information-warfare account (whatever you want to call it) makes it a fool's errand.

      Thanks Saxon! I love watching that first stage booster arcing back down. So cool how visible all that was in the launch. Also looks like it's firing off RCS pulses in the tight views I think.

      I love astronomy and cosmology. This stuff is so cool too. However, I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to knowledge of aeronautics, so could you tell me what RCS means? Btw Have you seen "Third Phase of the Moon" video UFO rally cry of the event on their channel? Lol!

    • @BeltOfVenus
      @BeltOfVenus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry, 'Reaction Control System'. The smaller jets that control attitude...maybe rotating it and slowing it a bit more to fall where they want it (sounds like SpaceX wasn't planning on recovering the first stage this time, so maybe just wanted it to drop in the right spot?). And...I've been kind of avoiding the conspiracy sites so far...it's depressing. Morbid curiosity will probably get me to look though. :)

      It flew south over the Pacific, just off the California coast. It's probably the same thing you're seeing in other videos from California. It was high enough and bright enough that we could see it 500 miles away in Arizona.

    • @peter4210
      @peter4210 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well over LA at about 100km of altitude, with the winds, the exhaust which is mostly water vapper mixed with co2, it will mostly not fall in LA. All modern rocket launch do this by the way, it's just normally you cannot see it clearly because the sun is not illuminating it on a dark sky.
      If you fear for pollution, Space X as one of the cleanest exhaust since it does not use solid rocket boosters which burn more heavy elements. the fuel that space X uses mostly does Water vapor, the rest is CO2 and other Carbon molecules. The concentration is not enough to produce rain clouds but it as been known due to NASA test that it is possible to create rain clouds like this. They have a facility where they test exhausts, and usually they use Hydrogen and Oxygen as fuel which creates water when burned. the rising clouds from the test usually delivers rain a couple of minutes later.
      Maybe the larger space X rockets which will be launched next years may create small rain clouds

      @@peter4210 but The Falcon 9 doesn't use hydrogen. It uses RP1(refined kerosene) for fuel and LOx for oxidizer. I know it's clean burning but does that combo still produce just water vapor?

    • @peter4210
      @peter4210 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      RP1 is not as clean burning as Methane and some other Hydrocarbures but water is still produced. Any reaction where the fuel has Hydrogen can result in water being formed. The BFR which will use Methane will produce way more water vapor, I dont know the chemistry of RP1 but Methan is 1 carbon surrounded by 4 hydrogen. the oxidizer is simple liquid O2, meaning 2 atoms of oxygen. we breathe oxygen in that form. Theoretical speaking, you suround 1 methane with 3 o2, you will get 2 H2O and 1 CO2.
      Of course the Atmosphere will interfere with the burn and the surrounding atmosphere may also react to the heat generated, causing other chemistry, or the methane can not be fully oxidized resulting in other things forming.

      Briana Coctecon, se separó Stage 1 y luego SpaceX recupera el rocket. SpaceX controlo el Stage 1 hasta que llegó a un barco. La segunda luz que baja actualmente es el primer rocket terminando su parte de la misión.

    Could anyone look at videos of this rocket taken from the various places of the US, as you can see the moon behind the trail, and figure out (triangulate?) the distance between them (and moon's distance from earth), to prove existing calculations by such obvious experiment? You can see moon appears in different place between the two trails at the end of each found video due to being shot from a different spot on the globe.

    • @stinkyfungus
      @stinkyfungus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1 No
      2. Yes
      3. The second stage of a falcon 9 is fueled with liquid oxygen and RP1 (highly refined kerosene) so - Water vapor mainly, some carbon dioxide. The plume expands out and becomes diffuse at high altitude, since this was a twilight launch - on the ground it was dark, but at high altitude where the rocket was, it was still daylight so the exhaust plume was lit by the sun.

      Jeremy Perez ohhhhhh, pero entonces, ¿Explotó?, ¿No funcionó?...

    • @BeltOfVenus
      @BeltOfVenus  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      La primera etapa todavía funcionaba correctamente. No explotó. SpaceX usó esta misma primera etapa en otro lanzamiento de cohete. Lo trajeron de manera segura y lo usaron nuevamente para este lanzamiento. Sin embargo, decidieron maniobrarlo a un lugar seguro y dejarlo caer al océano. Decidieron no usarlo de nuevo.
      Las luces intermitentes que ves son los pequeños cohetes que están ajustando su posición. Son muy interesantes de ver.

      Once the rocket clears our atmosphere, the exhaust expands outward very quickly and if the sun is in the right position, it illuminates all that exhaust for places far away that are still in deep twilight like this spot.
