I had the same problem, only worse, engine destroyed by sucking sand into the engine, found it in the carb, oil and engine had no compression, pulled the cylinder head and found the cylinder walls all scored from the sand! I just finished writing Firman about this screwed up designed generator!
Drill a hole in the air intake line between the bottom of the generator and the carb. It should reduce the amount of suck coming from the carb and prevent sand and grit flowing to the carb. Common issue with some cars that have air intakes low to the ground that can suck water into the engine if you drive through standing water. Or, just set it on some cardboard or plywood instead of directly on the ground.

Seriously to drain the oil the book says remove fill plug tilt on side drain the oil. Would not recommend this generator.
