No team played UConn tougher for a half than Iona in the first half of this game - San Diego State played them tough in the second half of the title game but Iona actually gave them their hardest battle of the entire tournament.
Notes about this matchup: 1. In his final years at Louisville, Pitino had won 5 straight against the Huskies. 2. In 2021, Iona was the 15 seed in the EAST bracket which UConn was also a 7 seed in. 3. During 2021-22, Pitino coached his first game against Bill Self as Kansas coach (Kansas was the top seed in this bracket). While Iona led at halftime, it did take UConn a while to adjust to Saint Mary’s opposite, Virginia-like tempo (Huskies led by 1 at halftime against SMC)
