"Alberto Balsalm" by Aphex Twin Arranged by Ben Wallace for the CCM (College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati) Steel Band directed by Rusty Burge June 2010
This is direct cultular influence of "Mermaid" movie by Disney. "Under the sea" song uses steel drums for lead melody. So it has been footprinted in your memory forever.
Aphex Twin like it :) from his soundcloud page: "love it, i wish i should go there and record it properly, they probably all left school and got jobs and sprogs now"
having seen him a few times live, I'm sad to say he generally just plays drill and nightmarish sounds with the very odd injection of a tune you vaguely recognize.
People say Aphex Twin isn't real music because he makes it with computers and synths. Then you watch people recreate his songs live... and it takes 13 people.
that's the difference between composing\arranging and actually performing. I would guess it's easier for someone to get hold of a pc+some software than 13 trained musicians. such is existance, pros and cons in everything.
I know for a fact that aphex twin is seen in high regard by the classical music comunity! People who say that he does Not make real music don't know sh*t!
I've never seen anyone say that about Aphex Twin. If anything everyone who's talked about him has the highest respect for his craft. And he damn sure deserves it, dude is a prodigy.
Back then he was a prodigy. Not anymore he's too old you're tripping. And btw I like his stuff I don't think you meant to comment at me, but if you did you're even more confused
I can just imagine walking around the desolate halls of high school an hour after a normal gray and dull school day and accidentally stumbling upon the band room and hearing this. Hearing the music produced here just makes me feel nostalgic for some reason. I know im a little late but damn, this is such an amazing performance. I watch this shit like everyday and for some reason, I wish I heard this when it was just uploaded recently
hearing reherasals happen as you wander around the hallways of where this was recorded is trippy, All the reh space and a bunch of practice rooms, jazz studio, recording studio and even a recital hall are all in what used to be a 4 story deep underground parking garage. It's strange, bec. the only noice down there is noise generated inside the facility. Rehearsal sound travels through certain parts of the space so well.
I distinctly remember the first day I felt old. I clicked on this link, and saw a bunch of kids doing Alberto Balsalm on steel drums (+one actual drumset) and realized that since I Care Because You Do was released, one of my ravey mates went on to teach music at a high school, and decided to have his students play a track off that very album -- students who weren't fully conscious when the track was released. On that day I felt old. On that day I felt vindicated, because great music is great.

2019. You downloaded this video 9 years ago. So friends, I watched it so many times. I have thousand questions. Was it your choice what to play? Do you like Aphex? What are you doing? Where are you? What are you listening?
I’ve watched this so many times, it’s brought me a ton of happiness! Hope all you kids are doing great, teacher of the year for sure and wish I went to high school there!
Must have took some dedication to make such an unconventionnal setup, I feel genuiely grateful that this version was ever recorded and uploaded on TH-cam ! Thanks !
Great stuff. Student bands crushing Tool and Aphex Twin now... wish I had a band teacher in high school that had us do this stuff. Probably would have stuck with it more.
this is why youtube is amazing. where else would i ever be able to see\hear this?? and it allows folks (like you) to gather and talk about as well. thats awesome. i can count on two fingers how many people i can have a discussion about aphex with, thank you richard d james, thank you youtube, thank you highschool steel drum band, and thank YOU!

i love aphex twin so much, i like how he inspires other musicians to emulate him whether with ensembles or arranged for solo musical instruments, after listening to him i do not understand how anyone could even like skrillex in the least, skrillex just imitates RDJ but he cannot create the ambient landscapes, emit the "inocence", or create anything original for that matter, there is a difference between manufactured "musicians" and special people like RDJ :)

I love when an electronic song is recreated with acoustic instruments
I love the fact that samplers made people recreate acoustic instruments as electronic music.
It's usually much better than acoustic songs remade with electronic instruments.
There's a great video of Louis cole playing some drum and bass on an acoustic drumkit
And then it ends up taking so many of them too. Edm can be very complicated.
Sounds like the coral reefs and busy ocean scene. I love it.
Lmao probably because of the handpan.
True
but like a coral reef i've seen before, but also not.
The original sounds like a factory with some sinister happening inside of it
