  • Day 5 saw us back up to a full day itinerary, although we did only visit one more tower than the half-day. Slacking, we are! Whilst much of the country drowned in heavy rain, we basked in glorious sunshine as we set off to the Storrington vicinity - we weren’t going to let a good picnic go to waste, after all!
    0:11 Shipley
    3:35 West Grinstead
    8:00 Picnic Lunch
    8:18 Storrington
    11:27 Henfield
14:45 Friday Night Entertainment at Parkwood
The first tower of the day was the nice little six at Shipley, housed in a large tower that could comfortably accommodate a much larger ring! The bells hang in a substantial wooden frame by George Day of Eye, Suffolk, dating from 1893 - the same year as the treble, so they were presumably augmented from five at this time. More recently, the bells were rehung in the frame and tuned by Whitechapel in 2010; they now handle very smoothly and sound quite pleasant. Ringing here includes Stedman Doubles (inside and in the belfry), and Cambridge Minor (outside).
Next up was the day’s “interesting” tower - the light six at West Grinstead - preceded by an interesting singalong! Cast by Gillett & Johnston of Croydon in 1910, the bells sound very nice, especially inside, where the substantial tower really brings out the G&J “twang”. However, the large tower also gives a long, unguided draught, a complete antithesis to Ringmer (remember them from Day 2?!). Personally, I prefer a longer draught - and these bells certainly barked worse than they bit; the group handled them extremely well, with no missed sallies in our time here (although Aaron and Marc did try!). Grandsire Doubles, Bourne Surprise Minor and the lower are included here - an extended video of these will appear on my channel at a later date, once the final Tour video is up.
Lunch! The sunny weather was still with us, so we broke out a picnic at Storrington, complete with fresh bread from a nearby bakery, and a play park (bringing out the big kids in us all!). Already dazzling in a bright orange polo shirt, I decided to extend the “new-look fashion” further, thanks to Steve’s sunglasses - Gok Wan, eat your heart out!
We held our striking competition at the pretty little six here, cast by Whitechapel in 1978. The test piece here was “jump call changes” (Rounds, Backrounds and Queens) - although, being the judge, I did have the entitlement of grabbing the tower before settling down outside with pen, paper and jelly babies! Some Bob Minor inside, and an extract outside (where the bells were particularly good) from Team 6’s practice piece
Our final tower was also our only eight of the day, at Henfield, although the journey here was made rather more entertaining with a “minibus singalong” (NOT included here, to try and keep Aaron’s pride!). The mid-weight octave were a glaring omission from last year’s itinerary; they were cast by Taylor’s in 1913, and are as good as one might expect, especially outside where they really sing. Bristol Major (outside) and Stedman Triples (inside) are the touches of choice here, where Connor’s hairstyle tried to outdo my earlier showings!
Friday night was Talent Show, and a new winner was produced - Aaron taking the title off of Connor for the first time, in a line-up featuring Les Mis, Disney, Avenue Q and other, “miscellaneous” acts showcasing the wit and talent within the group.
Coming soon - Day 6, did we make it through our final day unscathed, did Harry’s arrangements run to plan, and did the flagship tower of this year’s Tour live up to the hype?

    Great ringing and great bells.
Simon I love that you also capture not only the ringing but the church and surrounds.
Also the human and social side.
    Loved Kate Bush.
    PRICELESS.

Still to this day I don't understand why Henfield aren't talked about. They are one of my all time favourite eights

Yes indeed - very much a hidden gem, more impressive given there aren't all that many "classic" rings in this neck of the woods either

Excellent once again and Aaron's resemblance to Kate Bush is uncanny. In those glasses you look like Verka Seduchka.

Soon I'll be starring in a West End Musical - "Everybody's Talking About Simon" :-)

@@simonbellringer so what are Aaron's (and Connor's) winning talents?

Aaron did a bit of Gilbert & Sullivan this year - a Lilliputters List! Connor and Rachel have won in the past for their duetting.

Great Vid! I have been to all the towers featured apart from Henfield, so mostly familiar towers. You should’ve tried Billingshurst nearby. They are a very fine Mears & Stainbank eight. Unlike Uckfield

Uckfield were quite pleasant! Billingshurst is one in the area we've missed both years, can't do them all (we missed Henfield last year, I'd forgotten how good they are actually).

Who was calling the Stedman at Henfield? The person on the Treble or the 2nd? (Sorry, don't know names)

Oliver on the treble calling shots for that one!
