I think this was a great opportunity to LISTEN. When you're talking/interviewing someone who went through what they did, it comes off really insensitive when you redirect the conversation to yourself after they discuss something that wasn't a great expirence. People make the mistake of trying to relate to an expirence, which you can't relate to trauma if you've never expirenced that form of it with one experience which may have not been great for you. You're comparing being exploited with an expirence that is not related though was also unpleasant. If you're not educated on how to approach conversations with people who have experienced those types of things, It's always great to do research as to how you can approach them without coming off as insensitive. Sometimes the worst thing you can do is try to compare something to an experience that you've never had before rather than just listening and learning.
Ex: " My financial awareness stems from so and so which was traumatic..." (Didn't say that exactly but it's for example purposes)
Instead of following with " I loved to play with this and this at that age" which seems extremely dismissive and appears you aren't actively listening, you could've addressed what she said like " That's horrible ... Blah blah... I think at that age I was only concerned with childhood things"
Also the tone throughout the whole video seems like She's being interviewed to prove what she went through rather than for y'all to listen and use your platform for her to voice what she went through.

Presently my husband is lame and unable to work more than a few hours a week until he has a major operation. The healthcare system is lagging badly. I'm not trying to offend anyone with this explanation, but it still happens and how quick people are to change the subject to something light and jovial... without even acknowledging what I've shared. I think the problem is they didn't have a frame of reference or understanding of the financial insecurity or trauma Jennette experienced. At least the host acknowledged his piano story wasn't a great comparison. I became aware when I was around 4, believe it or not. My sister died, so it was a traumatic, confusing time for me which is why I think I have some really vivid memories from that time. But, my parents would feed me and not eat themselves because we couldn’t afford the food. I also remember these very nice ladies showing up at Christmas with a garbage bag full of gifts for me because my parents couldn’t afford anything. My dad worked, but he worked steel mills in the late 70’s. The mill closed right as my sister died. We lived in Michigan. Because of our financial situation we moved back to PA. On the way back the muffler kept falling off the car every other mile. I never asked for toys growing up, or money. Never asked them for anything and was always extremely grateful for anything I got.

It doesn’t feel like the hosts did their homework in researching about Jeannate’s background. This is my first time watching the show, and I enjoyed the overall interview with Jennette. It was, however, pretty strange to hear that Graham regularly gives Jack critique on different facets of his appearance... like enough to apparently full-on have Jack agree to change into Graham's shirt/jacket/watch combo before the show. Just wanted to share that I felt pretty bummed for Jack in his position as it was presented in the show. He has every right to the comfort of developing his own sense of professional style and/or wearing clothes he likes and feels good/totally himself in. Everyone develops and matures at their own pace, and you can still support someone on their own sartorial journey without trying to be forceful about it or impose your taste onto them... which is just not a healthy thing for either professional relationships or friendships.

I loved this interview because she seemed comfortable around Graham and Jack and felt like friends catching up.
The portion where they start talking about Jack’s clothes and style made me a little mad because of the way it was addressed.
Probably Graham meant well but it was completely unnecessary and speaks volumes about his character the fact that he felt comfortable enough to bring it up in the episode.

While I don't think she was forced, I do think there may have been an expectation. When I started working at 12 I then bought my own clothes and personal things as the alternative was to be treated worse than before. When I was 16 and started driving, and working more, I then was just somehow expected to buy groceries, I suppose because I did the majority of the cooking. My parents were not poor. I have paid so many of my parents expenses over the years while they have given my siblings millions of dollars in land, and in my brother's case actual blank checks. Parents exploiting children is just the tip of the iceberg and points to narcissism. Grr.

Then he brought up his parents bribing him to go to piano lessons like-i get it, I had hockey as a kid and was accidentally put on the boys team by my dad...and since we didn't have much money and couldn't get a refund I HAD to go even though I hated it. But a little after that I also begged for guitar lessons, and was told I could get them, went to a free first lesson and everything. I was so upset I couldn't go after begging and begging but found out later it was because we couldn't afford it at the time.
Ik I'm kind of rambling here but my point is being able to go to piano lessons, and getting allowance money to save up for toys and reptiles, is such a privilege. And parents forcing their kids into music lessons is pretty common...it's normal. I know he acknowledged it wasn't the same but him bringing up totally normal childhood scenarios in response to actual abuse is weird to me.

When Jennette said "I was excited to talk about that" when they finally brought up her book, (at the last thirty minutes of the podcast) was so heartbreaking to hear. That's what I kept waiting for/expecting too. I was disappointed with this video tbh, there weren't very many questions on learning more about her experience, and at first when they were talking about money and the guy putting so much emphasis on how her management team "lawyered" her and went on about it when it was a thing that happened years ago, and it lead to a decision that she had already stated she felt so much better about. Whenever she answered the questions in the beginning with the house maintenance stuff and there was just silence, I would feel like " oh no, did i just say the wrong thing? These guys think I made a mistake" and then to proceed on with HOW she made the mistake, I just wish they didn't make comments like "this is what they were doing" or "they for sure disclosed that you" like, dude that's not what important, if the person said they don't remember or they don't know- just let it go and move on the next topic - which is her story, not explaining why things happened that aren't important.

Nah I totallyyyyy feel Jennette on the home ownership thing. Ownership is just not for some people, houses are a pain in the ass and if you're not given a warning for how MUCH of a pain in the ass they are, and you aren't handy yourself (which she said she wasn't, and I personally am not myself either, so I feel), it can be SO costly and annoying. The only real way to deal with the constant issues that come with long-term home ownership are like........learn how to be handy yourself, which takes time investment and costs money, hope that you have friends/family nearby that are handy AND willing to help, or pay someone to fix it and hope they're not ripping you off. With that stuff in mind, you can start to see the appeal of being able to delegate any broken shit to being your landlord's problem.

I literally have nine siblings- Four Sisters, five brothers- and while we obviously have issues that go along with A fairly crowded household and shared bedrooms, my mother is incredibly in-tune with all of our emotions and needs, from mine (I'm the oldest) all the way down to my toddler brother. Lets not make blanket statements like that when there's some genuinely amazing parents out there who are able to manage that many kids, and whose kids are super close to them. Do not have more kids than you can handle. Period. If you struggle with two, adding a third won't make it any easier. If you thrive with seven kids and they are healthy, financially secure, and functioning well in their home environment, then go on and have that eighth kid. 🤷
I'm genuinely sorry for whatever bad experiences you've had. But that doesn't reflect on other people's families and home lives. Everyone is different, everyone can handle different things, and every parent deals with their children differently. What some could not manage, others Thrive in.

Jeanette seems like such a lovely grounded person. I look forward to reading her book. Getting past bitterness to forgiveness is critical in moving forward in life-good to hear that is very present in Jeanette’s mind. It sounds like she had a lot on her shoulders as a child…she had to work and manage her life like an adult. I can understand why she doesn’t want to ‘manage’ a home right now. Love how she seems happy with a more minimal life…which I see as a very rich life. In contrast, listening to Graham talk about his anxiety taking off more than two days because of the algorithms.🙁 I’m with Jack…take off the goofy jacket. I had my one and only child at 40. If I was younger I may have had another. My son, now 25, tells me that he misses not having a sibling even though he had a rich life with family and friends. People should make the parenting decision based on their ability and willingness to give love and time. Don’t change who you are one bit Jack. Why are they shaming her selling a money pit of a house? She explained so eloquently why renting is easier for her, maybe homeownership is for some people, but I also watched my parents struggle with the burdens of owning a home that flooded twice, and I don't ever want to buy a house and be stuck somewhere the rest of my life.

i suppose it depends. if i had 900 thousand I would probably buy atleast something. since I don't have that much I am not sure to buy. i would if it was free but to pay and then still need to do it up. It just ridiculous walking around there is just so much abandoned land and then they want you to pay so much for it. as far as the land is concerned, it would be extremely lucky to have me. it is abandoned and basically worth nothing without someone to do something with it but they want to charge thousands and thousands. i looked at one house and it was like this should have been sold 30 years ago and it just sat there empty coz they thought it would go up in value. you actually want to charge me money to do this shit up?

Schools need to teach way more about how to handle money, make a bank account, handle credit & learn how not to get screwed over, etc. Especially if the kids have parents that will take advantage of them financially and guide their financial decisions because they don't know what they're getting into. Some kids are lucky to have successful/ happy or supportive parents but some will struggle for a long time after they make the move.

I was t taught to “worry” about money per se, but my parents taught me to be aware. I bought all my own toys (with the exception of birthdays and Christmas) with allowance money and deposited/withdrew my own birthday/Christmas/grad money from a joint bank account owned by me and my parents. It REALLY helped me understand finances at a younger age for the better.

Honestly, I didn't realise for part of it that she wasn't the interviewer because I was organising my house and that can be distracting.
I loved her questions to Jack about the dating and questions to both about emotions and how she just asks "really?" as an ending so if they want to think more they can or it can end there. You can feel the writer and listener in her the whole time. I hope I can find more interviews with her that delve more into her book. Recently listened to her narration of her book and was blown away with her humour and grace in delving into her journey into a healthy existence.
