    I love this series. The magnificent properties make the American real estate shows like Selling Sunset look like cardboard boxes. I enjoy the way this family interacts, so naturally, even though it is scripted.

    Merci, Geraldine! I watch L'agence, and I feel so dumb that after studying French, I still can't understand the FAST, truncated spoken French. You are such a help! :)

    •  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You don't understand it because you didn't listen enough of SPOKEN FRENCH. It just takes a lot of time. I was in the same situation and after 2,5 years i understand almost everything to the point that other "famous french youtubers" like Hugo or Elsa from Piece of French talk too slow for me and i have to speed the videos because it's just too slow. Just stick to listening a lot of spoken French. :)

    I watch a lot of reality and this show really drew me in. It really felt authentic and even if it is scripted you never get that sense. Very difficult without subtitles though. I felt I could understand the grandmother the best :)

    This fast abbreviated French between brothers reminds me of the way we don't always write all the letters when writing in cursive on something like a grocery list, versus the careful way we might print to address an envelope. All about the context. Thanks so much for breaking this down; I've been watching the show on my own at 3/4 speed, and needing multiple repeats to catch even half. Your careful French subtitles are much more helpful than the Netflix auto-generated version!

    • @vahunter752
      @vahunter752 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Me too! I like the show but most of the time, am completely lost!! This was a great, great help but I’d be more comfortable with a slower speed. If you can tell us how, we’d be grateful.

    • @deba4537
      @deba4537 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@deniaridley @vahunter Yes, gladly. It's simple when watching on youtube: while hovering your curser over the icons on the bottom of the screen, you click on the settings icon, which looks like a wheel, which then opens a list of four choices, including "playback speed" and "subtitles". Choose the speed you prefer. The "subtitles" choice opens different things for different videos, but usually a choice of English or French language subtitles for French language videos, and sometimes for bilingual videos. (The "cc" icon just acts like a toggle switch for turning subtitles on and off; going in through settings isn't as quick but gives you more choices.)

    I love this series, and it was a real eye opener as far as our preconception that the French are all super chic. I noticed that when they go to showings their dress is very casual, sometimes to the point of looking a bit “rumpled”, but they are so confident that they carry it off as though they were dressed to the nines. Sandrine has surprised me even more with her choice of clothes, the very short skirts, wow, I could never carry that off!! I’m definitely a mid-calf woman, but I am much older than she. Majo is an absolute gem, she is the kind of grandma any kid would be lucky to have - and what a trooper!!

    I like watching this, as well as Plus Belle La Vie. With PBLV, I found it so difficult in the beginning that I always used to adjust the speed and add the French subtitles. One day I forgot to do this and I didn't even notice until it was almost at the end! Now I always watch it at normal speed but I'm sad that the show is coming to an end soon, as I have found it useful for learning slang and normal French speech.

      En français correct on dirait ”pour ne pas que je parte ”. Mais c'est très courant de supprimer le ne. En fait il est sous-entendu. Et très souvent on dit plutôt : ”pour pas que j’parte” ou encore mieux ”pour pas qu’j’parte” . Pas de panique, faites répéter. C'est tellement habituel, qu’on s'en rend plus compte. On répètera volontiers en parlant plus doucement et mieux :)

On ne s’adresse pas de la même façon à un commerçant (un boulanger par exemple) et à son meilleur ami ou son frère. Et pour autant c’est quand même du langage familier et non du langage soutenu. Correction: The every day life of an average super wealthy french familly. It’s sure much more realistic than Emily in Paris but it still pperpetrates the cliché that french people are all in this fancy rich glamour way of life. This is not at all an average working class parisian familly. Real Paris is like a swan: pretty from the outside, feisty and cacophonic when you face it for real. It’s very multicultural (the main alt background is from north Africa) and busy. There are rich people but also poverty and lots of homeless people. It’s a contrasted city.

    The ONLY reason to watch this show is that it is in French. There are many reality shows about real estate agents in English, but as an English speaker, I have no reason to watch them because they are so tedious and uninteresting, just as this show is. "Authentic" doesn't have to be boring though. I just finished "Standing Up'/"Drole" in French on Netflix. - Funny show with a lot of heart.

    I pretty much understood everything but I did live in Paris as une jeune mariée many years ago. Loved the series because it reminded me of my life there, not the wealth but the accents and the argot. I had the great advantage of being married to a Frenchman which meant acceptance into a friends and family milieu. I thought “Emily…” was heinous although the eye candy was fun. The stereotypes were very predictable and banal. There is so much more to Paris and Parisians that could have been shown. I enjoy your channel very much.

    Hey Geraldine, thanks for your interesting and helpful content. I wanted to contact you via e-mail but couldn't find it on your page. There is one thing in the videos you make that makes me .... I'm so sorry to say that but it almost makes me to quit watching them, when you continuously look to your right, possibly to read the script. It's all fine to have a script and read from it, just if you can put it directly middle of the looking area, top of camera or so, you can make the reading unrecognisable. There are some very useful videos on TH-cam for how to make it unrecognisable and natural. I really like you and your way of telling, I and probably many other people will appreciate if you can solve this

      Immigrants always love their new country more. Otherwise they wouldn't live there.

    thank you for breaking down their incredibly fast conversation. i tried to watch this show last year and had to stop, because this family is incredibly annoying and full of themselves. hopefully, majority of french people are not like that. even if they speak an everyday french, it is hard to imagine anyone would want to be friendly with them.

      Dont worry, this isn't representative of French people at all... Maybe of some rich parisian people, but not all of all French people !

      Really they're annoying? I don't think so, personally. I'm fine with them being themselves. The other brother said, "if only I can afford it I'd buy it. But I don't have enough money"
