We live on the top of a hill in Warwickshire. We are putting Meshtastic on a 10m pole outside and line of sight coverage will be huge. Also putting them in the cars with antennas on the roof or inside top of windscreen.
Looking at that Heltec video, with all those remote places to go hiking in .. looks like we better get cracking putting solar powered repeaters everywhere!
I saw you got name dropped in hrcc's recent live stream interview with the meshtastic devs. Making international waves now. Probably get a firmware named in your honor soon 😊
I got my Heltec devices about 20 minutes ago. Getting ready to flash them and get on to see who is local. Thanks for the great info!
Nice one! Good luck meshing.
Which supplier as the links on the videos are always sold out.
That battery is going to last 40 seconds
It's IP65 though, probably the better spec.
Dont be silly... 45 seconds ;-)
@@JaseEtheridge ever the optimist
I came straight to the comments to say this.
With power saving it could last a while we'll see.
Looks great but shame about the 50 USD shipping fee 😢
Thanks Andy, you have really sparked my interest in Meshtastic. I just got some devices in my hands to start working on and have more on the way. This is some fascinating technology and it is moving fast so it is great to have your insights.
Can you explain the difference between LoraP2P (Meshtastic), and LoraWAN (Helium)?
Can the 2 cross communicate? Range differences? Power? Data bitrates? Etc?
I never had or ever will have a CB radio, yeah, I am compelled to watch your videos………..👍🏻
Remember the 35mm Film canisters? Boom! 😮
My favorite newcomer channel 😊
Looks like pogo pins on the endcap to get power from the charging port, around the gps, to the board.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I've wanted an open source turnkey(ish) solution for hiking similar to a well-known popular brand. This looks like it'll fit the bill!
That tiny battery life gives me an idea, it'd be neat if someone made a battery-less version of this kind of meshtastic dongle that is powered via tether to your mobile device.
with a usb-c to c you can power the Heltec V3
What about one that scavenges energy from solar, piezo ect and moisture and has enough juice for about 10 texts but already has pre built texts in it and can be used in an emergency.. like help I'm stuck I'm these coordinates... ect ect
@@bigmouthstrikesagain4056 Meshtastic has a "canned" message feature that could be setup for emergency messages, the Wisblocks are better for low power and solar setups.
There are solar panel setups that power a battery in a Meshtastic device.
You would be able to rig something up fairly easily.
Even 18650 battery shields have charging ports & you can buy a small solar panel that plugs into that.
I am sure there would be a market for a solar/thermal/wind/earth battery pack that would keep one or two 18650's topped up to power all kinds of remote projects (keep everything USB compatible) I have tried to make many for lora, rasberry and other projects, it would be so much easier if the chinese just released one.
I'd love one of those 'Personal Attack alarms'...Where do I sign.....?
Thanks for the videos. Do you have any more info on the HELTEC CAPSULE SENSOR V3, like battery life range ect.? I was waiting to get more info before I order one. Thanks...
Very interesting. I look forward to seeing it.
So if you set it on a table, the GPS antenna faces down?
As always great music Andy !
there's also the LILYGO watch t s3.. also works apparently with mesh.. not sure if that would work as a router or node?. probably either.
I just checked $50 to deliver, double the price of the unit 😢
Yeah thats terrible! 🤣 I'm sure they'll sort that.
How long will a 250mAh battery run an ESP32-based Meshtastic node? About 4 hours?
something tells me this is the kind of thing you would ONLY turn on when trying to send, as opposed to using to receive as well. I'd give this thing 2 hours before the battery is shot. That said, maybe it's something one plugs in when using for any more than a few minutes.
I get exactly 96 hours from 10000mAh, so the battery life of this would be roughly two hours.
@@innercityprepper And this device is not a PLB or beacon or satellite communicator. If there are no nodes within range, this thing is a paperweight.
@@suzyamerica4679I expect it's quite light, so not much of a paperweight. I'm thinking I might set up a home system with a yagi which covers the local walking area.
mmmm a tracking beacon, I think a solar unit all in one is the go so you can just stick it on any roof and happy joy joy -mesh !
My main question, before pre-ordering, will be to find out if the supplied interior antenna will do the job.
Seems to me that the antenna could have been incorporated into the lanyard design...?
Should I purchase a meshtastic device that does not have the 1262? Differences?
This looks a much more consumer focused product, very interesting
Most of the stuff on the Heltec company pages seems to indicate that they're into supplying commercial IoT solutions. Agree, this is super interesting. Looking forward to seeing where this tech goes over the next few years.
Hi andy kirby, a question ¿do you can put a vibration sensor with this module, then deep sleep for battery and when shaked send a message automaticly to the others Meshtastics device?
Maybe the capsule don´t have the enough space but this is not a problem
Great for SAR waterproof and simple
Would be great if they made a version of this but made the case capable of holding a standard 18650 lithium battery by basically making the same case but longer, at least 65mm longer to be exact. Then you get a much longer life and can swap with a freshly charged battery with seconds of downtime
Nice one Andy
Just bought my mesh device. Arrived 30 mins ago.
What's the range on a device like this?
I got really exited to purchase one at $25 then when I hit buy it was $50 postage 😢 so abandoned cart for the time being, I'm sure this is just the start of awesome Meshtastic devices coming to market.
Quick question, as I am a very new to this....Does this item serve the basically same purpose as the Lilygo T-Echo devices which are always out of stock? *Thanks*
Yes
Thank You! @@mimetype
Is there anywhere that has ANY mesh /1262 devices available in the USA that you know of?
This looks like a really neat little device, but I'm a little bit disappointed that they used an esp32 instead of a nrf52 chip
Looks like the 'Wireless Boot' initially creates a WiiFi hotspot that you connect to from a device and then input your credentials, so it can join your local wifi network or Bluetooth device (like how you first set up some types of Wifi cameras) Also from what I took from the video, this thing lacks a USB port entirely
That is a cool device. A larger battery would be helpful.
Battery is 1/3rd the size of the T-Echo battery (850mAh) with an ESP32 that's way more power hungry. I can't imagine the battery life is going to last more than about 30 minutes. I've never been on an off-grid adventure that short, wouldn't even get out of the car park 😂
The esp32-s3 was released in 2020. It's one of their newer models.
Yep but still high power consumption compared to others now.
@@andykirby Rak is absolutely killing it with the low-power stuff.
@@andykirbywhat are the alternatives?
reminds me of an old film canister for 35mm film for those that remember that lol.
Can you do a video on setting up a secondary private channel Andy
I am waiting for the eink one to come back into stock
Watchout for the delivery cost from Heltec. It will make your eyes bleed.
Is it cheaper than a normal lora communicator? Cos if it is it could be a affordable alternative for working class and those who are poorer that can't afford a normal meshtastic there's quite a few people I know in the uk who would t be able to afford a normal meshtastic
A normal meshtastic at about £13 delivered from China? I think that's what I paid last weekend for a Heltec. Of course there's no battery or GPS with that.
I know that nrf radionmodules were £5 at one time.. I'm not sure if they are now.. but I've wondered whether a nrf mesh could be built for cheaper..... I'm looking into trying to build the cheapest meshtsatic alternative for my community.. because I've heard that meshtastics been cancelled and also my area is poor working class and economically deprived... so this nrf nesh would probably involve a lot of diy-ing , a lot of recycled materials, mutual aid and direct action to build this up
People who build mesh networks have called me crazy for trying this btw... I also want ro create a commons capital pool setup... example: if 10 people wanted to build a 2 nrf meshes at about £12 each they could split the cost equally (it must be equally or its not a commons capital pool) and then they could build base repeaters from those for everyone in the community to use. Also the workshop barter model is also interesting
Right... FedEx shipping to Germany's £52-I'm out if the shipping costs as much as a full-blown T-Echo ordered from China 😳
I live on a hill and have line of sight to Winter Hill and over the North West and Wales, I can't even find a supplier that has one or two of these devices that is genuine or not vastly overpriced. People are just buying them up to inflate prices as they did with radio programming leads a few months ago.
Check the description, I added an eBay UK seller with some stock
Can I buy that music track somewhere? Since you are the creator?
I accidentally swallowed mine. What do?
Call kinder.
😂😂
Vindaloo
Turn on telemetry, follow its progress through the system, put out a video about it.
Like an accountant, you need to work it out with a pencil.
They need to design a tube the goes on the bottom of it to install an 18650 or 21700 battery. :o)
I just tried ordering (pre-order, ships march 8)...4.45 US handling fee plus 53.00 US for shipping!
Just no stock anywhere :-( Worried I might buy the wrong item for Meshtastic as Amazon sell similar looking boards.
Ordered - yes very expensive shipping and conversion to Aus dollars wow
Shipping cost are outrageous
50 bucks please!
I quite like the idea of it, as a hiking safety device. But the practicality of it is not great. I guess carrying a small foldable solar pad and this as a backup, short life device?
Is there another video coming of what you would actually use this for in the real world?
Yeah, or just look at the last 10 or so vids on this channel to get an idea.
Sneak it into prison? 😂
Seriously though, it has a small battery so I guess unless you're carrying a power bank with you, you're not going to be using it much. Maybe to check in if you have climbed a mountain?
The postage is twice the price of the module!
That shipping is expensive. Holy cow. lol.
The battery will last a minimum of 2.5 hours and a maximum of 8 hours.
An ESP³² with a tiny battery? Oh. 😮 Even worse with GNSS module.
SWEEET!!!!!!
Ugh.... $38 shipping to the UK! Seriously... Such a turn off when shipping costs are more than the cost of the product
250 mAh battery?!? So…20 minutes? Maybe there will be an extended battery with the magnetic charging on the bottom?
I need your help please 🙏
what u need ?
It needs a solar charger, wrapped around it.
Shipping costs twice as much as the product 25+50 and 4.39 handling fee -- $80.29 -- In pounds at current exchange rate, that will be £63.73 -- NO THANKS!
Leave it a while, they shouldl add a non courier option.
@@andykirby 👍
250mAh battery? That is a deal breaker.
Unless there's a mountain or big heel it will be useless in the forest
gps or bust
Are my comments getting removed?
looks like becaus eit had a link:
search Meshtastic Heltec Wireless Stick Pendant in printables if anyone is looking for a case similar to this idea! uses a Heltec wireless stick module :) peace!
Shipping is $999.00 or $53.00 Fedex. This might be a scam.
More likely web error.
@@andykirby Nope. I took your link, added one to the cart, went to check out and it shows $999.00 shipping costs.
ah another cable to not lose. Nah will pass. usbc or nothing
that ending music is super obnoxious
So a device with wifi, bluetooth , with 250mAh battery for search and rescue?
Lets be realistic this have 1 hour battery?
So the advertising is inducing the people in wrong way😢😢
wack
This guy sold out to Meshtastic... All his recent videos have been about this Mesh... Sponsored by Meshtastic it should say...
