    I bought the SPT99 over three years ago and I couldn’t be happier. Power is what I was looking for and it delivers. I’ve run 3/8” wide by 1/2” deep dados in pressure treated lumber without it bogging down. Love the fence. I really appreciate the big wheels when I have to move it around.

    I own the 99 and can’t imagine owning any other portable table saw. Though I’ve been through 3 other saw before this one, I don’t see myself replacing this saw anytime soon. Great review.

      @@Beachbum001 I was torn between the DeWalt or the Skilllsaw. The features are very similar in adjustments and capabilities. The price at the time was comparable. What helped me make the final decision was the folding stand. It was super stable and easier to use. Plus I live on a good size piece of property and the larger wheels made it much easier to move around. Hope this helped.

    The motors on both are 15 amp but the one on the 99-12 has larger windings and has more torque so it doesn't have to work quite as hard and heats less. I'd go for the 99-12 mostly for stand though the geared fence is a bonus. The stand is well worth the price difference just on it's own. If they sold that separately, I bet a lot of other brands of jobsite saws would end up on them. You didn't mention it, but loading the 99-12 into a truck is also really easy. I don't think it's really that much smaller to store and it's certaintly easier to get to where you want to store it.

    After using the Dewalt saw for a while now, I ‘d say the rack and pinion fence is a must. It really makes for faster, more accurate cuts and is a pleasure to use. So between the two Skils, it’s well worth it to spend the extra 130 for that reason alone.

    I've owned spt99 for a long time and believe me, it's quite powerful and *NOT* quiet than other portable table saws.
    Other than that it's a monster table saw. I'd rather buy spt99 over spt70 and believe me again, the rack and pinion fence is worth spending additional $130. The only question I have is why Skilsaw doesn't release another spt99 lineup without movable stand.

    I bought the smaller one because the larger one was not out yet when I made my purchase.
    I choose this saw over others because I often rip 2x4s on edge which this saw does very well.
    However I would pay the additional $130.00 for the better fence and mobile stand with those monster wheels but I am so satisfied with my saw now that I am not ready to replace it yet. Perhaps #1 son will borrow it some day then I will need buy the bigger saw. Or better yet if I can convince him to buy it then I can just borrow it from him. Hmmm...

    • @bernarddouthit4647
      @bernarddouthit4647 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own a Skilsaw SPT70 as well and had a question about ripping 2x4s. When you say you do it on edge I assume you mean you are ripping through the board the long way - cutting the board into 2 1x4s (actually 3.5"). I am a fairly new table saw user. Ripping a 2x4 the long way means the blade needs to go higher than the fence which is a bit intimidating. I made a wooden push block that can get hit by the blade if need be and this works, but not without having my arm sprayed with sawdust. Do you have any special techniques for ripping tall stock like this? One guy suggests cutting it half way and then flipping it and cutting the other way.

  • @nathangonzlaez2
    @nathangonzlaez2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Good job , like a lot of carpenters framers skilsaw is a must . One hand ripping and durability is a plus so seeing this saw is a must for me. I’ve had Bosch 4000 and Dewalt on rough job sites and both were pushed to the limit with the Bosch being cooked . Seeing you rip that LVL was impressive that’s tough stuff. So thanks on cementing my decision. I’m going for the upper model 👍🏻

    I went with the 70. For 130$ extra, the wheel stand and upgraded fence are nice, but not worth the space it takes up. It would be different if I used it every week, but I only use it once every month or so. Either way, both are great set ups.

    • @bernarddouthit4647

      I bought an SPT 70 used and so far it's done great. However, I had a question since you are a fellow owner. I just put on a ripping blade and I was in a bit of a rush. The blade seems to cut fine, but it clanks around like I haven't heard before. I actually was going to take it off and now I can't get it to loosen. I've changed blades 4-5 times at least but haven't had this problem before. Have you had anything like this happen?

    I bought the wheeled unit and the optional outfeed support. Awesome. Accurate out of the box, and the most powerful job site saw I've used. Plan on upgrading the miter guide. It takes about a half hour to assemble the base. All the included accessories storing right on the unit is helpful.

    I have never owned a table saw. What do I want? A Sawstop contractor. I may settle for the Skillsaw 99, I like the better cutting depth over DeWalt. The Sawtop JSS is so close to the contractor in price that I might as well go for the cast iron. The Skillsaw 99 stand is nice, maybe I can take it to the basement in the winter.

    I have the SPT 99-11. I am very happy with this saw. It even came with a decent blade. One criticism that I have is that the zero clearance inserts are very cheap and thin and not the same quality as the other components. I love the stand, and those big wheels roll over things easily.

  • @JF-mq8tp
    @JF-mq8tp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I own an SPT99-12 and it is terrific, except for two things. First, it doesn't come standard with a good zero clearance throat plate, and second the optional (that means you pay extra for it) zero clearance throat plate is a piece of too thin plastic, poorly engineered, it bends. I can't understand why all table saws don't come standard with a good zero clearance throat plate. I believe it is more useful than a dado throat plate, so why isn't the dado throat plate the optional one? Take heart friends, it's possible to make a decent wooden or clear plastic zero throat plate for the 99. However, it's a pain in the backside to do because it involves using a router. I've had the 99 almost a year and use it several times a week. As yet I've never used the dado throat plate. I'm saving it for when I need some tear-out.

  • @JF-mq8tp

    I just bought an SPT99-12 and in many ways, it is a very usable saw. However, I like using a Zero Clearance Throat Plate and the one made by Skilsaw is a loser. The throat plate that comes with the saw and the optional dado throat plate are both metal and work just fine. However, the optional Skilsaw Zero Clearance Throat Plate is plastic and do to (my guess) money-saving engineering, is not great. I found it impossible to make a 3-inch cube on the saw*. The plastic throat plate bends down and changes the angle the wood meets the blade. Had Skilsaw spent a few extra yuan and put in a fifth throat plate support or made a metal Zero clearance throat plate, this would not be an issue.
    I made my own Zero clearance throat plate out of acrylic. It took me 2 days and it works very well but it was tricky to make. Good Luck.
    *You can make a cube if you don’t mind the sides not being at right angles to one another but then it’s not a cube.

    The SKILLSAW SPT99-11 would be an easier upsell for Skillsaw if they didn't shove the stand down your throat as a requirement. If the stand has to be forced down consumers' throats, a quick-release between saw and stand would have made things MUCH easier or DIYers with cramped garages. Wall hang the stand and sit the saw on a shelf. The current configuration chews up too much floor space in a two-car garage with both bays in use.

    The spt-99 doesn't have a dado insert even though they advertise it as an add-on. I've called skillsaw and Bosch and neither can find a location that actually sells it. And if you want to make your own insert for the throat. They designed the throat to make it very difficult to make one that fits. The left side of the throat has a ridge of metal that is only 1/8th of an inch from the top of the table, so you have to use a chisel or router to cut the insert super thin on that left side.

      That 5/8" gain lets you cut 4x4 though. That's pretty handy.

      Did you expect to gain a couple of inches. The saw will cut through a 4X6 in one pass. Do you know of another saw that will do this? Me thinks not. You're easy to disappoint.

    I cut my own lumber with the Alaskan saw Mill. Can they both really cut a price of 4x4. The stand version cuts a 3 5/8th which my pine will most likely shrink to, the non stand version only cuts 3 1/2 per the man. website. Can you do a video of them both cutting a 4x4 if you can. That'd be great help and I can't imagine that I'm the only one that cares about ripping a 4x4.

    Dumb question but do you “have” to put the 99 on the stand? Can’t it be used as a table top as well?

    • @JasonTaylor1
      @JasonTaylor1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am not sure, but I have look at the one with the rolling stand and it looks like it would work fine off the stand by removing the 4 bolts. I just bought the 70 and the rack style fence and ability to use it without the rolling stand are a plus so i might just return the 70 and get the 99.

    I LIKE this saw, I WANTED to purchase this saw but I can't fricking buy it in the UK 😡 😡 😡
    Only the inferior bosch without rack and pinion fence. Phoned skilsaw uk customer services and they're bosch, they won't honour the warranty on an imported saw.

      Seriously considering it but nearly 700 sterling is a bitter pill to swallow when there's no warranty at all, and I can't help feeling like I'm being fleeced of my hard earned. It's the same story with the Hitachi.

    These saws are straight up junk as all Skil tools are. Wheels melted in the Texas heat, cant lock down the blade height, you have to clean it to go to a 45, blade elevation handle stripped out as its all plastic, they couldn't even put a metal bushing on it at the point of contact, The fence lock down works itself loose, Oh, but "Its got a Hemi, Get Er Dun"... I've used all these jobsite saws to make a living and none of them are perfect, they are what they are. But this is one of the worst ones on the market. I'd buy a Ryobi before I bought another one of these. I'm not a troll, TH-cam just keeps suggesting these videos and I'm tired of the sugar coating put on these turds, lol. I'll move on now.
