My question is: How is any of this relevant at all? Why do people need to do archaeology just to have the right to continue living in their home? It seems to rest on an essentialist and heavily nationalist understanding of human rights. Even if the Palestinians did not show up until after the First World War (which I know is not true, but for the sake of argument), that's still plenty of time to establish a home and a community, which should be respected.
@@Historyun Oh, yeah, 100%. It's historiographic apartheid. I'm right with you there. It's disgusting and does need to be fought. But I think there's an unfortunate tension in it. Because at the end of the day, EVERYONE, regardless of how much history they have in a place, should have a right to their home, their community, their freedom of movement, political representation, etc. And I worry that by engaging with Israel's defenders on this point, we are implicitly accepting their assertion that the right to live with dignity in a place is determined by archaeology rather than by everyone's fundamental human rights. There's also the risk that these historical debates are so complex and prone to disinformation that we are at a disadvantage fighting apartheid apologists on this terrain, while it would be much simpler to just assert Palestinian rights regardless of any historical status But then, we also should not let them get away with this kind of historical revisionism and dehumanization. So I don't know what the answer is.

Historical context is important here, he did what he did AFTER the Arab nations were defeated and humiliated in the Arab-israeli conflict resulting in the mass expulsion of Arabs (the Nakba) from their homeland. What he did was not because he hated Jews but a retaliatory act. If you expel our brothers, then we will return the favour. However, by that time - most of the Jewish community had already left for the new state in Jerusalem and David Ben Gurion was more than happy to have them. For he claims that there was a pogrom in middle eastern countries while you say they were actually in europe/east europe. Both can be true at the same time. Unless I've misunderstood your video, but it doesn't seem to deny that everything was relatively safe for jewish people after the 1940s in MENA countries.

We are not justifying a single instance of persecution however when citing examples one should not isolate minor instances while omitting the major and consistent ones. It's deception by omission. Arguably, one may go as far as to say that had Israel not been established in 1948 that the Arabs would have had no basis or reason to persecute the Jewish communities in their midsts (the history simply doesnt support this, unlike the situation in Europe). My question is: How is any of this relevant at all? Why do people need to do archaeology just to have the right to continue living in their home? It seems to rest on an essentialist and heavily nationalist understanding of human rights.
Even if the Palestinians did not show up until after the First World War (which I know is not true, but for the sake of argument), that's still plenty of time to establish a home and a community, which should be respected.

But I think there's an unfortunate tension in it. Because at the end of the day, EVERYONE, regardless of how much history they have in a place, should have a right to their home, their community, their freedom of movement, political representation, etc. And I worry that by engaging with Israel's defenders on this point, we are implicitly accepting their assertion that the right to live with dignity in a place is determined by archaeology rather than by everyone's fundamental human rights.
There's also the risk that these historical debates are so complex and prone to disinformation that we are at a disadvantage fighting apartheid apologists on this terrain, while it would be much simpler to just assert Palestinian rights regardless of any historical status
But then, we also should not let them get away with this kind of historical revisionism and dehumanization. So I don't know what the answer is.

I want to push you to do better, so I'm going to criticize some holes in your video:
In Chapter 12, you don't actually refute his claim. For he claims that there was a pogrom in middle eastern countries while you say they were actually in europe/east europe. Both can be true at the same time. Unless I've misunderstood your video, but it doesn't seem to deny that everything was relatively safe for jewish people after the 1940s in MENA countries.

Chapter 12 illustrates the exceptionalism and disingenuous manner in which he presents his information - it makes little sense complaining about the two or three Pogroms that happened in Arab nations during the Arab-israeli conflict (something that is not unusual during wartime, anywhere) while completely failing to mention that the greatest number of Jews fleeing from Pogroms were coming from Europe and not MENA, furthermore - the Pogroms of Europe have been taking place for well over a century before 1948, as outlined in the example cited.
We are not justifying a single instance of persecution however when citing examples one should not isolate minor instances while omitting the major and consistent ones. It's deception by omission.
Arguably, one may go as far as to say that had Israel not been established in 1948 that the Arabs would have had no basis or reason to persecute the Jewish communities in their midsts (the history simply doesnt support this, unlike the situation in Europe).
