This video really does show just how much better season 1 was than 2 and while I like Mackie i think in this show Joel truly out acted him. He brought this emotional damage and vulnerability to the character that Mackie just couldn't. For some reason his portrayal just felt kind of stilted and hollow. The world felt bigger in scope in the first season. Not sure if anyone agrees since the second season seems to be getting higher praise

Joel simply did a better job if joel wasn't kovacs first then everyone would be loving mackie over joel
he was a great sucessor to Joel's kovacs he brought his own to the role
it's like the doctor or james bond neither actor is absolutely better than the other all of them bring their own to the role. for example Mackie brought the charm and the sass and Joel brought the cynical nihilism
both brought both sure but on both excelled in either category
look at it this way if Joel or Will ain't available you get mackie.
I totally agree with you. Joel's interpretation was supreme: he is such an amazing actor! What a pity he left: the first season of this show is absolutely stunning, the second season just cannot compare to it.
I don't disagree but I also don't quite agree, in Season 1 Kovac is just coming out of the ice after how many odd centuries? I can't quite remember. 30+ years on the run have happened since between the end of S1 and S2 and the character is not the same. The traits you loved in Joel were fitting but that same edge is unlikely to be there given Poe's influence on him in that 30 years. Maybe Mackie's depiction is not as strong, but the characters to begin with are not the same. I also find the script writers choice of words for Mackie to be less impressive than in Season 1.
Also season 1 had much better storyline. Lot of twists and turns, multiple themes to follow - introducing to the world, detective plotline, rebellion background, smaller stories of Takeshi's companion etc., season 2 felt bit more like generic sci-fi, there were hints of interesting plot point, but some of them were bit too rushed (fake rebellion) and havent had that much of an impact. Season 1 felt quite unique to me, season 2 reminded me too much of other stuff I already knew, for example Tak and Quel storyline and the whole "ancient superweapon control" storyline reminded me of The Fifth Element.
I love this character study, and I love altered carbon season 1.

I'm so happy you watched this show and made this. I watched S1 for the first time a couple of months ago and loved it. Such an interesting premise and Joel is imo just incredible in this role. You have the incredible ability to take the central essence of a show and turn it into a five minute tribute and it never fails to impress me. I love how this video shows the questions of time and memory that plague a world which has an unlimited amount of it and how the past and the future have become essentially the same. Really stunning editing.
Honestly there's so much good material there I was worried 5 minutes wouldn't be enough haha and yes, Joel is amazing in this role! I'm super glad you enjoyed the vid, thank you! ^__^

This was great! I love this show! I haven't watched season 2 yet, but that's because I'm a little sad that Joel Kinnaman wasn't going to be in it (even tho Mackie is awesome too!) but I should probably get on it and watch the new season. Thank you for vidding this show and sharing it!

oml was waiting for it to be made and then missed its upload! Love it and love the show. Watched the first ep when the show first came out but couldn't understand it so didn't continue until a month ago when I watched every ep back to back when i wasn't working xD Also "the truth doesn't set you free, it tears you apart" is so true! The truth we think we need, isn't always going to be what we want to hear

I loved both Season 1 and Season 2. I was so butt hurt when they didn't announce a Season 3.
The storyline of season 2 was weak compared to season 1. I watched season one 3 times already but I only watched 2 once and didn't feel like rewatching it
I don't know why i tried to like season 2 and i just didn't.
I've been ignoring the 2nd season because I'm afraid I won't like it and as much as I LOVE Anthony Mackie, I just can't imagine him in this role
