Unless you have tried this, photographing small birds moving around quickly in a tree with a long telephoto, you have no idea how difficult this is or how much persistence it requires. Trond, you are to be praised not only for your photographs but your joy in capturing that special shot.
My trick -- tho it's obviously not always the best solution depending on shooting situations -- is to "fill flash" using the ON-Body flash. This can work with subjects up to 15-20ft away. (I shoot very fast & small endemic forest birds too) My on-body flash can sync up to 1/320th. If I notice the bird is comfortable & not so flighty, this is a great solution for contrasty shooting conditions AND you don't need to be super close to the birds. Those were superb images you got! & congrats on 10k!
Yeah sometimes aperture priority can be your best friend. Thank you for all your tips. It’s always a challenge to photograph these small skittish birds but once you get a sharp picture of them it is so gratifying! Congrats on 10k subscribers Trond!
Nice Video Trond, I have the same experience on you taking photos to goldcrest, Small and so active bird, its quiet hard to get good photos and it needs a long patience and commitment..but thank you for sharing your settings and experience...Keep on inspiring us, Thanks...Greetings from Finland
Another great video Trond! I think the huge growth in your number of subscribers is a testament to just how much you inspire people with your photography. And also how much we all identify with your passion for wildlife!!
Nice images of that stunning little Goldcrest Trond. Some sound tips too. I currently use my Nikon D7500 combined with a Sigma 150-600mm C lens on a Manfrotto 055 tripod & Lensmaster Gimbal head which keeps things steady. I shoot in Aperture Priority mode (usually wide open), set my rear command dial to adjust exposure compensation, set ISO manually according to the light levels, Metering Mode set to 'Highlight Priority', Natural Picture Profile, and just keep and eye on the shutter speed to ensure sharp results. Hope this may help some people.
Hi Trond congratulations on 10k plus subscribers well deserved with the awesome videos you produce. Thanks for all the tips and tricks I need all the help I can get, once again your images were just beautiful. Until next time take care my friend.
We get goldcrests in our garden here in the UK - not managed to get such lovely photos of them as yours though! Will keep trying. Still learning how to use my new camera!
Beautiful little Birds they are, great photos and Advice Trond, 10 thousand subscriptions, that's brilliant 👍🏻👍🏻. I think it's only the tip of the iceberg. 👍🏻
I recently took a photo of this bird with my cheap 55-250mm and a Canon 200D and the pictures were actually very decent because the bird was less than two meters away from me. Until now I didn't realize how lucky I was because I didn't even know the bird.
Another great contribution Trond. Idea for a video would be the different camouflage and blinds you have in your collection cause for me its interesting. Love your patience and dedication.
Another superb video! Seamless editing, fantastic music selection, photography education and incredible images of the Goldcrest. I tried getting images of this species in Romania in May but had my D500 set at too fast of a shutter speed as what you say is true, very “flighty”. My images were too dark and could never seem to find one low enough in the branches. Keep the videos coming. Fan for life.
Outstanding work getting the Goldcrests on video and in the beautiful stills! I learned a fair bit from your tips on this one. All the very best, Gordon
Another fantastic video! I just love the part where you play the soundtrack and page through photos, so relaxing. Where I live in central east Florida the most difficult birds to see are tufted titmouse and small finches, they just flit all about so fast in the oaks. I used to worry about my D500 be so careful but I can see by watching you use your gear that the Nikon D500 is a robust and rugged camera. We are getting ready for the hurricane now so thought I'd watch some peaceful content to relax. Congratulations on 10,000 !!!
Trond I want to do first u salute for doing great job . What's a lovely photography , you know your videos inspired me to hang camera and go out anywhere for photohraphy
Ahh, The start of Saturday morning with seeing your video! I always look forward to it! Those little guys are super fast and always a fun challenge even here in the US. The funny thing is I was going to use my chair blind today and here you have a it in todays post.... I noticed you are close to a roadway in some of your videos, and here I thought you hiked in for hours into the deep..... Pine forest. lol Great video.... thanks for sharing your time there. Greg
Beautiful vlog episode, Trond. Over the pond here in Canada we call those Golden-Crowned Kinglets, though I think there is likely a difference between them. Keep up the good work!
Congratulations on 10,000 subscribers Trond, knew you would make it ever since i came across your videos, seeing you put the effort in trying to capture the shore birds lying down in the wet for hours, love the channel and the videos you share keep up the good work
Hi Steve! Thank you so much for your kind compliment. You should...its a great bird to photograph. Find a good pine forest in the UK and you probably gonna find them now in the fall.
Wonderful video Trond, like always ! I have yet to find goldcrests here around Bergen, but next time the weather is a bit more gentle I'll be sure to give it a try :D
Have a look around Munkebotn, Langevatn, Garpetjernet. I haven't seen them lately, apparently they migrate north for breeding in summer, but they used to be there in the other seasons.
Trend, congrats on the 10K subscribers. Always enjoy watching your adventures photographying birds. Especially liked in this video the tips you gave on camera settings. Big shout out from South Australia. 👍🏻
Congratulations on reaching 10K subs Trond! You deserve it for all the hard work and great content in your videos. Wonderful shots of the Goldcrest, by the way. Tricky little things to shoot. 👍
Always a delight watching man! noticed a few of these yellow crest around a couple days now, think ill try et out and capture a few shots :) thanks for the tips
Hi Trond, excellent video on the Goldcrest. Well done! Getting the exposure right in the woodland setting is a challenge. I note that you use Exposure compensation but what Exposure mode do you use- matrix or single point? Did you ever think of using Shutter Priority for such a fast moving bird? I too use AP but if you have enough light, SP can be effective in getting sharp pictures. Ron
Great video, excellent photos. Despite the fact your lens is high pro level you still need to get as close as possible, perfect your technique and be very patient - key takeaway for us novices.
Thanks for another cracking vid Trond. ps: my D500 rarely sees the light of day since I bought the Z6..the silent shutter if first class for wildlife ! Best Wishes from England.
Hi Trond, what a great video did you make!! Also very beautiful pictures, especially the one at 11:43... I have the same combo as you do (Nikon D500 and 500mm F4). Do you also use a tc?? If so, which one do you use?? Which focuspoint do you use?? Single, 3D or group?? Greetings from The Netherlands.
Hi Walter! Thank you so much for the great compliment. I sometimes use TC. I use only the nikon 1,4 II. I change between the singe AF-C and group 25 AF-C. Wish your photography the best.

As always, great advice, Trond! Those Goldcrests and Firecrests are so sneaky haha. Not an easy bird to keep in the viewfinder! Well done!
Thank you so much Stefano. Yes they are sneaky :) But they are great.
