I'm a Canadian that grew up in Indonesia for 9 years of my life. My dad worked for CIDA. Lived in Makassar on Lamadukelleng Rd across from the park near the college. Watching your videos is bring me right back to that time in the 80s. Incredible country I hope one day I can go back. Love your videos keep up the good work.
This made me in tears, This village is called Bangkelekila, I actually lived there when I was in junior high school, my uncle once was the pastor for the church that you stopped by and those roads are very familiar to me, watching this brings back so many memories. Now I live and work in Java, thousands of miles from " tondok kadadianku, padang di gente' toraya" (my hometown, a land named Toraja), GOD I miss home so much... I never expect I could see this village again through a random video on my recommendation 😂. Kurre Sumanga' sir for such an amazing vlog, God bless you Jonathan and family, stay safe
Wow! I'm so happy you were able to find our video, and that it brought back fond memories. Bangkelekila, and all of Toraja, is absolutely beautiful! Our family learned so much from this experience!
Awesome family 👍🏻 You are a lucky man, Jonathan. Kelly is very supportive, and a strong woman with positive vibes. Your 2 kids are not spoiled, and they can adjust with new environment easily. Forest is cute ☺️, including when he had tantrums which I actually wanted to see in this video. 😆
Thanks, Dora! For me, this hike was one of my favorite experiences in Toraja. It was so beautiful, and everyone was so friendly. I'm sure I'll have the opportunity to capture one of Forest's tantrums in the future! 😆
@@BagsPackedFamily I thought I was the only one who realized it, by the way I was born and raised in Toraja and was touched by this video. Kurre sumanga sudah mampir di desaku tercinta 🙏 salama'
This was my grandmother village called TORAJA, located in one of the province in Indonesia called SULAWESI SELATAN. The culture there, is still strong. Funeral procession especially, it's the most authentic experience for a tourist. Beautiful traditional house called TONGKONAN would be great for your camera moments.
Thank you for the suggestions! We absolutely loved visiting Toraja, and enjoyed staying in a tongkonan house in rural Toraja! You're welcome to check our that video here: th-cam.com/video/3orP3vWbOAE/w-d-xo.html
Jon and Kelly, there is a historical connection between the Toraja people and the Batak tribe in North Sumatra, which combines cultural traditions with Christianity.🙏
I'm from Pinrang, quite close to Toraja maybe about 3 to 4 hours drive. It's very interesting to see your video in Toraja, the last time I went to Toraja was a long time ago when I was in junior high school 😅
I hope your family is always healthy and comfortable while in Indonesia, especially in South Sulawesi, there are still many beautiful places in South Sulawesi such as Bulukumba with its beautiful beaches.
Bedanya orang Indonesia dan orang asing, kita orang Indonesia menghindari panas matahari dengan memakai topi. Lihat mereka senang berjalan dibawah terik matahari..salut!👍🤗
Wow! You manage to fall in love with Indonesia. I am not as lucky as you are. Sometimes, I feel embarrased when I see foreigners love my country. Honestly, in my mind, I think The Netherlands looks more beautiful than my tropical country does.

Watching this video made me in tears, I'm Indonesian, I never travel like you do. You took us to see Indonesia I never knew until now, so precious thank you
Awesome village with local people, tradisional houses and nature, Toraja is one of best places in our country, as a Java people..i am so proud and respect they always strong hold old tradition ..,thanks Sir and all of your family..terimakasih
This looks so nice and relaxing! I’d love to do this as well. I mean, the people wouldn’t be as excited to see ME, hahaha… But it’d be nice to just take a walk and talk to people along the way!
The spread of Christianity in North Sumatra is quite similar with the one in Toraja, in which the zending mission tried to respect and somehow incorporate ancient Batak (the tribe's name) beliefs and rituals into the church (One of the examples is that they still translate the word God into local word 'Debata'). From what I read, the lead missionary, Nommensen was asked by the mission organization RMG (German Mission) to teach the new converts slowly and turn them into "proper Christian" and "Europeanized", leaving the old beliefs and rituals, but Nommensen believes that would hinder the mission progress, and thus still incorporates ancient belief and allowed some rituals only if it doesn't directly contradicted the core Christian beliefs, or try to change the meaning into Christian beliefs (like "tardidi" which is similar to baptism, so they just change the meaning to suit the Christian belief). So yeah I think Torajan and Batak people are quite similar in terms of Christianity.
This is soo relaxing to watch!! Strolling around deep in the countryside. My fav view is 27:26 onwards. How the clouds shattered above the paddy field is just soo beautiful! Thanks for sharing. And again Kelly is indeed super mom!

His English is superb, articulate, very knowledgeable, but I like most about him is his personality..Helping the kids and he almost like member of your family..Gonna miss him and this six some when you leave Toraja...Beautiful scenery and the sky is so blue towards the end...another great video !!!
